Sam, to answer your question.... this is NOT a bummer episode! As a fellow GenXer who grew-up hanging out at the arcade, the nostalgia hit hard. There was nothing better than entering the cool, dark arcade (after riding your bike there in the hot summer sun) and smelling the stale cig smoke, musty shag carpet, and faint sweaty kid smell. The sounds of the other kids cheering or moaning in despair, layered with the many sounds of the video games. Ah.... good times!
Ye, knowing voice actors sometimes is painfull because it destroys the atmosphere. Like a month ago, i was playing through the Frozen Wilds (first and only dlc of Horizon Zero Dawn) and suddenly i heard this old man, probably a shaman, telling a story to a bunch of kids. I sat down a listened for 5 minutes to this old "familiar" man. At the end i left saying "nice story, thanks Liam".
Exact same thing happened to me lol! Was just walking on my way to find the paint lady and stopped in my tracks going "hey, I know that voice!" I found it a really impressive performance too, Liam has such a way of engaging you with his voice.
Hearing people talk about retro games is something I really like. A streamer I watch a lot of, his whole thing is game collecting and finding different ways to get to playing his entire collection. He even did two streams talking all about the history of SNK because he was so excited about Terry being added to Smash Bros Ultimate and so many people didn't know who that was nor have any reason to care. That was a great set of streams I'll be honest.

Listening to Sam and Liam gush about retro arcade and video games just made a wave of nostalgia wash over me. I still remember fondly playing Ring King and Major League Baseball with my late Grandfather on the NES, and beating Contra for the first time with my Dad. So many crazy times in the local arcade with playing Sea Hunter and Star Wars, and playing Sky Pirates: sitting in a seat and rocketing up and down at a GameWorks.
Fantastic!! It was such a joy to see so much fun nostalgia being shared. I'm blessed enough to see that constantly. I own a classic 80s arcade, "1984" (1984arcade.com), and of the 80+ games we have many were talked about. Our are originals, not mame, but it's so much fun to see people come into my place and lose themselves in the old classics. We even have a Vectrex :). Been doing this thirteen years and seeing people's faces light up like Liam and Sam's is something I live for every night! Awesome awesome episode!!
As someone who was actually born in 1992, the first part of this video got really nostalgic for me. The N64 and the PS1 were the consoles released when I was a kid and I have great memories of them, but due to my family being quite nerdy I also spent hours playing o the Atari 2600, the Sega Megadrive, the NES and the SNES. Playing Super Mario Bros, North and South, and Duck Hunt with my Nan and my cousins on the NES are some of my favourite memories and it really took me back while watching this episode.
I remember when I first played Skyrim 7 years and have the picture of my character in my head photographically still, and the draugar form bleak falls barrow and the old carpet I sat on in the middle of the day in the living room and when ever I play I flash back to that which just brings back so much!!
Felicia Day! SO happy to see you back! Please do more stuff on TH-cam! We missed you (and your brother especially when backseat gaming and arguing with you over a classic videogame)
Enormous shout out to the editors and those in charge of the post-production of this show. Amazing work! Thank you for all of the subtleties you throw in. I just don't want you to think your work is going unnoticed!
13:27 This isn't a bummer Sam :) I was about 11 or so when Arcade Machines and Arcades in general began to disappear. It reminds me of this awesome pizza place in my hometown that we used to go to. My brother and I got good at Tetris for awhile there ;P
To show how mummified I am: I remember arcade games that were pre-video. My favorite was "Night Raid," which was a nighttime landscape with targets, painted on a roll of celluloid, which apparently had some foil patches on the back or something. As it rolled you'd see it in a half-silvered mirror that had lights behind it. The control stick mechanically moved a contact around on the back of the roll. When you pushed the button there was this light effect as if you'd fired missiles from a fighter plane. "Hits" registered when the contact was touching the foil patch when you pushed the button. I loved it because it was always three missiles -- "pew pew pew" and if you hit the target there would be a distant "boom boom boom." It was really hypnotic.
42:20 Doing "Ghost' with Sam Riegel -- be still my heart! I so loved that he was wearing a David Bowie Goblin King t-shirt and won perfectly matching Donatello glasses! It was meant to be!
I bought Dragons Lair for xbox because it was a nostalgia thing for me... I was the first kid to play that game in the local "wizards" video game store in Nelson, New Zealand. It was $2 a game here... Huge cost for a game knowing that most games where only 20c - 50c each back then. I was born in 1972 so a bit older than you. lol
If anyone wants to see or learn more about that game console that Liam was talking about (6:35), the Vectrex, Ashens did a good video on it. Never thought I'd see any crossover between Ashens and Critical Role, but here we are!
I'm in the generation between, where I know what you're talking about and actually played a lot of those games, but I was quite young when I did. To be honest, it's hard for be to believe I'm only 11 years younger than Liam. I look at him and think "adult" yet he's barely any older than I am. I guess in my head I still think of myself as a young'n. Anyway, I never experienced the Atari, but the NES was my jam. I'm glad the old school games are being recognized more lately, with the Nintendo online service and the various "classic" systems being released with collections of some of the best games. Many of them hold up even today as being fun, challenging, and engaging. Good to see you guys reminiscing about it all with such joy.
I have to say, the way this show I set up, having a podcast spliced with vlog style content felt so odd at first, but I'm finding that the format of cutting back and forth is really quite refreshing. I love your creative minds.
Great show guys. I remember the 4 quarter games that was my spot when I was pre- teen I guess and it was called Malibu Grand Prix a race car mini track and game room. I spent days blowing on the cartridge there were no pause buttons or save points. Once you die no respawn and you start all over again.
14:00 And those of my generation remember listening to the Sega Genesis hour after hour while our kid played Sonic. I can still hear the sounds of Sonic going through different landscapes and getting coins.
From an outside perspective, the show's value seems to be in your friendship itself. You invite the audience in to your casual conversation, making us feel included in the experience reminiscing about happy memories of games our generation grew up on. The sit and talk format lends to a comforting atmosphere that assists in escaping the mundane without expectation being set too high. Your conversations don't always have to be profound to have a meaningful impact on your viewers.
So I found a clip of Obscure on youtube, clearly heard Liam as the jock character. Yet wikipedia credits that role to Michael Sinterniklaas, strangely.
As a 25 y.o. who began his adventure with games with gamecube, and then really hard with first playstation I am honestly listening to you two with interest. It's so amazing to hear about those beautiful beginnings
Sound effect ideas: (tie them into the other shows!) Travis: “Yeee-hawww!” Marisha: “Pop-Pop” (obviously) Will: A drum pop or talk show riff Matt: “Is it Thursday yet?” or “HDYWTDT?” ... you get the idea. Just tie them in with the other content. Keep it as a kind of ‘easter egg’ for people who watch the other shows.
I get uncomfortable when people talk about how gorgeous celebrities/content creators are but I would really crawl on my hands and knees over a bed of nails just to hear her fart through a walkie talkie
You know, I always knew I loved Sam Riegel, but I never knew were were childhood best friends separated at birth. Nobunaga's Ambition was the BEST nes game ever made. I've spent many an hour trying to conquer the almost impossible task of taking control of 50 fiefs before dying of old age. And uh, when they talked about Matt setting up shop at the arcade game, I just really wanted to hit up 7-11, grab a few snacks, and slurpies, and join him for the funnest few hours of my life.
My first system was Coleco Vision with loop the loop and pole position. It got stolen when are house got broken into. They got me an Atari as a replacement with a whole mess of games because it was after the video game crash, so the games cost a dollar each.
For those who wonder about "MAME Drop," this episode brought the MAME cabinet to the Critical Role studios, then Talesin did his "Everything is Content: MAME Drop" episode, and THAT was the backdoor pilot for "MAME Drop," which now alternated with "Everything is Content" and "Yee-Haw Game Ranch" for video-game based stuff.
Sound effects-- Ashley: Mickey Mouse "oh boy!" or the "la la la la's" from "Loving You" Brain W Foster: A Mickey Mouse chuckle Marisha: some Didgeridoo Matt: Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma Taliesin: Gregorian monk chanting
14:00 it's NOT a bummer at all! It's nostalgic. I remember going to Incredible Universe growing up in the 90s before they closed. It smelled of caramel popcorn and I played on their rows and rows of SNES systems with my brother while my parents shopped around and my dad doing karaoke.
This was fun! I think I'm about 10-12 years younger than Liam and Sam so I had a Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis (and later an N64) and remember absolutely zero of the games they mentioned playing when they were younger lol. As far as video games go, I mostly have memories of playing various Mario and Sonic games with my dad which was great and definitely some of my fondest childhood memories.

Ashley: An angelic choir
Brain W Foster: A 'womp, womp' sound effect

Critical role: let’s be pirates!
AWNP: let’s be pirates!
I love the Cow Chop arcade cabinet in the background!
The cowchop machine at the background. How worlds collide!!
I have to say, the way this show I set up, having a podcast spliced with vlog style content felt so odd at first, but I'm finding that the format of cutting back and forth is really quite refreshing. I love your creative minds.
Marisha's sound effect should be "We're practically gods!"
Or the sound of a goldfish impacting on stone at terminal velocity
Or the sound of “You are LYING!”
Great show guys. I remember the 4 quarter games that was my spot when I was pre- teen I guess and it was called Malibu Grand Prix a race car mini track and game room. I spent days blowing on the cartridge there were no pause buttons or save points. Once you die no respawn and you start all over again.
This is the best talk show. Keep them coming.
This is by far their best episode yet! Keep them coming!
This episode was awesome! Love this show and then to have the incredible Felicia Day on as well? Win win.
Such fond memories of the mod 90s.
This show makes starting the work week better. Sam and Liam are truly a gift to humanity
Pft, I've been waiting for this since Cowchop broke the news about this forever ago
And you can see the Cowchop one in the shot when they first bring in Felicia :-D
14:00 And those of my generation remember listening to the Sega Genesis hour after hour while our kid played Sonic. I can still hear the sounds of Sonic going through different landscapes and getting coins.
Matt Mercer's sound effect should be his maniacal laughter!
Talisen would have to be the creak of a coffin opening.
51:52 I used to love this game !! :D Recently found it again and have been playing it with my dad
So I found a clip of Obscure on youtube, clearly heard Liam as the jock character. Yet wikipedia credits that role to Michael Sinterniklaas, strangely.
Yeah, when they mentioned it I looked it up too. It's not listed on Liam's IMDB page either.

As a 25 y.o. who began his adventure with games with gamecube, and then really hard with first playstation I am honestly listening to you two with interest. It's so amazing to hear about those beautiful beginnings
wow i love my dads lol
also i keep forgetting that this show exists somehow ??? i saw only the first ep live what a travis-ty (horse sounds)
I'm just imagining Marisha watching as they progressively get more drunk and sentimental.
Sound effect ideas:
(tie them into the other shows!)
Travis: “Yeee-hawww!”
Marisha: “Pop-Pop” (obviously)
Will: A drum pop or talk show riff
Matt: “Is it Thursday yet?” or “HDYWTDT?”
... you get the idea. Just tie them in with the other content. Keep it as a kind of ‘easter egg’ for people who watch the other shows.
If we're going to tie the sound in to other content, I'd want Matt's to be Pumat Swole saying, "I got this." Or Lorenzo saying, "Example it is."
Not a bummer episode - totally brining me back with all the nostalgia (14:06)
Next episode just needs to be an hour of them drunkenly playing games on that machine
lol loved the asnwering of the trivia questions. The final cabinet looks amazing!
If your number 2 is yellow, you need to see a doctor.
- Felicia Day
I get uncomfortable when people talk about how gorgeous celebrities/content creators are but I would really crawl on my hands and knees over a bed of nails just to hear her fart through a walkie talkie

But the other button colors were red, blue or green and I think those would be worse colors for number 2.
You guys are the best! So much love
Sound effects--
Ashley: Mickey Mouse "oh boy!" or the "la la la la's" from "Loving You"
Brain W Foster: A Mickey Mouse chuckle
Marisha: some Didgeridoo
Matt: Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma
Taliesin: Gregorian monk chanting
Taliesin, "His laugh"/ "Deep daemon laugh"
Pentaxer”it’s fine, this is fine”
14:00 it's NOT a bummer at all! It's nostalgic. I remember going to Incredible Universe growing up in the 90s before they closed. It smelled of caramel popcorn and I played on their rows and rows of SNES systems with my brother while my parents shopped around and my dad doing karaoke.
Matt Mercer's sound effect should be a choir singing Halelujah!
thewanderer41 it should be an angelic choir singing, “MAAAAAA-THEW MER-CER!”
This is legit the best episode of this so far.
I'm so excited to see Felicia here! Who else is with me? :D
Glory to the Queen of all Nerds!
That moment when Liam tries to grapple physically with the concept of 40 thousand games and loses.
Found this in 2022 as I shop for arcade cabs, great show guys!
