shadow of mystara had a game breaking bug in it to trigger it you needed to have a thief, wizard and cleric. the wizard grabbed a specific item on the village level, the thief then grabbed the item the wizard dropped. the thief then became immortal and couldn't die unless it was from dragons breath. this came in handy to unlock the ultimate sword in the game. To unlock it you had to swing it 125 times. no problem right? wellll the problem is the sword caused damage with each swing, so immortal thief vs cursed sword = ultimate sword unlocked waaaay earlier than it was supposed to and the rest of the game was a cinch. But if you had a cleric all he had to do was pick up and drop the sword 15 times. Also since you didn't need to buy any armor, or things like that the thief could save the money to buy a ring that healed, in the game calculations, at least 8d10 points of damage. By the time this ring show up you could buy at least 20 of them with all the money you saved as a thief. so keeping your wizard and cleric alive was easy.
The item swap trick worked for thief and wizard. The immortality does not work against bite/grab attacks, so you could still take damage from them and die (and as you mentioned, red dragon breath still kills you too). Cursed Sword 1 is un-cursed by the cleric attempting to pick it up and IIRC becomes the Holy Avenger. Cursed Sword 2 (which becomes the Sword of Legends) is the one that requires 125 swings. You could un-curse it without damage by interrupting the swing animation before the damage animation could start. You could do this by casting a targeted spell on the sword swinger (like Cure Light Wounds), or in a less resource-intensive way by having the sword swinger jump and time their sword swing to just before they land. If done correctly, you will still hear the sound effect of the swing but take no damage (even though the red damage icon appears). I'm fairly certain there weren't enough Cure Serious Wounds rings for sale that you could buy literally 20 of them.
I LOVE the D&D brawler games! I found them as downloadable titles on the WiiU some years back, despite my (at that time) disdain for tabletop D&D. As a Final Fight/Golden Axe/brawler fan, these were in my wheelhouse, and eventually led to me playing D&D proper. Also, the song "Ambush On the Streel River" from Tower of Doom is one of the coolest arcade songs ever.

Loving this trivia game! I think I'd be so addicted. I recently watched Troll 2 for the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I'd love a cast watch-through.
I have this computer right now, and I'll never forget seeing these in the Arcades when I was growing up. It was SO much more complex than the typical beat-em-up scrollers like TMNT and X-Men, or even simpler ones like Final Fight. I remember picking the Wizard, (green) and getting my butt kicked on my first go, because I thought this game was a fantasy version of the others, which meant I had to go around punching things. But boy, once I finally launched a fireball... well, then I started to realize this was a very DIFFERENT arcade game. Playing this again now, (picked it up on Steam), has been a great experience! It is TRULY a gem of that era, and way more advanced than the games of its time!
I love hearing Matt talk about Lodoss War and D&D in Japan. On a trip there last year I took some time to really explore a lot of RPG shops in Tokyo and was blown away by so much - the huge love for Call of Cthulhu that's going on right now, the giant displays of 5E and Pathfinder stuff (both of which had just come out in Japanese), all the vintage western RPG stuff, and then the giant glut of totally awesome Japanese RPG stuff - both homegrown D&D-inspired TTRPGs and all the super awesome Japanese versions of old D&D books with the awesome art Matt's talking about. It's great to see that history, and it really makes the step between D&D and early JRPG games so much more apparent.
Mame Drop has charmed me completely and I never even played many video games as a kid!!! I was the weird kid among my geeky friends I made later that I just didn't. And yet this brings me back, and fills me with joy, thank you so so much for this!
I have re-watched this little series so often. Though I doubt it will return with the current world situation, I still would love to see a second season at some point. Just watching the crew relax on these old amazing games with Taliesin hosting, its so amazing ;;

not gonna lie, LOVED the Shadows over mysteria *(the other classes have A LOT more moves, they just didnt know how to use them, ie: the Elf has a Bow, the Thief CAN pick locks, the warrior has a shield to block with, the cleric can HEAL!!! which was huge in this game to save money)* ....and skipped right past the quiz game. U guys should check out the AVP side scroller as well as the X-Men one!

Lodoss War and Capcom's side-scrolling DnD games were both my jams in the 90s. Alien Vs Predator still has my heart as the best Capcom side-scrolling beat-em-up of all time but if anyone is into Golden Axe or the Capcom DnDs, they absolutely have to check out Dragon's Crown.
Ok so I relate to everything in this video especially the Vegas comment. I did the same thing and used to hit up all the arcades. Once I found the D&D game I fell in love with it. I lost so many quarters to that game.
Back in the 90's, when I first started playing (ironically by using a printout of the rules from one of the computer games, and reverse engineering the rules out of it, lol... the lengths one goes to...), that summer I worked at the only arcade in town, good times. Looking back, if I'd invested the money spent playing those arcade games, I would've had more than just the Forgotten Realms box set and some hand-me-down 1e books, XD... Wouldn't trade those days for anything though.
Take the Quiz game and replace all the trivia question with stuff from Vox Machina and the Might Nein. Turn it into a complete fan game for Critical Role.

That D&D game was how I found one of my gaming groups. I was playing at the local arcade, and a guy came up and asked to join. His name was Mike. We chatted back and fourth while fighting kobolds and whatnot until we each realized the other was an actual D&D player. Mike had a friend or two, and I had a couple friends, and our group somehow formed a family, like a Brady Bunch made up of under-employed 20-something guys.
Watching this makes me think if they all got together and played a Critical Role trivia game, where they ask facts about Vox Machina :O I would love this so much! This was a thrill to watch.
I think I accidentally played the fighting lumberjack/ woodsman character before by mixing frenzy barb, with hunter ranger and gained levels in paladin oath of ancients, dual wielder human outlander (just Jason Momoa in fur and plate armour)
Funny thing is that D&D with anime art that he mentions? It's now considered a collectors item in Japan so if you want to get it (as one of my friends did) it's going to cost you quite a bit. Also Japan doesn't play a lot of DnD but has their own big name RPG series in Alshard which apparently has overtaken it (so I'm told, not sure if that's true).

I think I accidentally played the fighting lumberjack/ woodsman character before by mixing frenzy barb, with hunter ranger and gained levels in paladin oath of ancients, dual wielder human outlander (just Jason Momoa in fur and plate armour)
I love the plug for Record of Lodoss War! Surprisingly few people get my references to Deedlit, Parn and Woodchuck. That made me smile.

Funny thing is that D&D with anime art that he mentions? It's now considered a collectors item in Japan so if you want to get it (as one of my friends did) it's going to cost you quite a bit.
Also Japan doesn't play a lot of DnD but has their own big name RPG series in Alshard which apparently has overtaken it (so I'm told, not sure if that's true).

Local lore says Paul Bunyan's wife is Lucette-- the only reason I know that is because it was the name of a store I worked in. Because, Bemidji. Never heard of Minnie for that. I am kind of glad I don't know everything Paul Bunyan, because then the town will have won, lol.
