I see the argument of how it's not out of character, but I just can't imagine Wilf shooting at living creatures on purpose. It does feel off.

Bernard Cribbins narrated a kids TV show called The Wombles in the 70's. They were fictional creatures which lived in burrows. I think the moles thing was supposed to be a jokey reference to that. Would have suited both characters more if they'd said he was making friends with the moles or something.

This was my interpretation, too. Just a little inside joke. If Bernard actually used to shoot moles himself - well, I don't have anything against the reference either way. Yes... Perhaps it was a little "odd" despite the context you've suggested... It did take me by surprise... it didn't really fit with him having been wheelchair bound... But - I'll buy it.

I took it as a reference to “shooting” as a metaphor for recording. I didnt really see it as out of character as much as it actually being a tribute to bernard him self

For me I would have liked a mention of wilf passing more than what we got cause it falsely implies wilf can return when he actually can’t due to the actor having passed away that doesn’t mean he has to be forgotten cause he definitely can be referenced in the future

I think they’ll give it some space for now. They didn’t mention Sarah Jane’s passing in media for a few years after Elizabeth Sladen died. If we do get a mention when Rose/Yazmin Finney’s character returns in Season 1/Series 14, they’ll probably address it then with a line like “He passed away in his sleep. It was peaceful.”

@@SonicTimewarp probably cause when the actor who played Kate’s father died they came right out and killed him off

@@kevin10001 I think you’re forgetting in series 6’s finale where the Doctor calls the Brigadier’s nursing home and he’s informed he’s dead and that being the main reason he decides to go through with his death (until making the plan with the shape-shifting robot)

What for? You know the actor is dead. They know we know the actor is dead. No one would go assuming it's setting up a suprise return of Bernard Cribbins. But why give the happy ending for 14 a tragic note like this, if it adds nothing? I think it's kinder to imagine Wilf having a couple more nice years with the space man and Donna, with all her memories back.

Given that Wilf was obviously a keen gardener with his own allotment in Partners In Crime, I don't see his war against moles as out of character at all, and this video is the first time I've actually questioned its appropriateness in The Giggle.

You’ve got a good point. He did spend a lot of his time up at his allotment before the Doctor came into their lives, could be as simple as protecting his crops.
Its been all over my Twitter feed the last few days, since BBC writer page added the scripts, surprised people wasn’t mentioned it when the books released though but I guess everyone has access to the writers page and not everyone will buy the book.

A sprig of holly atop a molehill is a very good way of deterring Moles, they prick their noses on the plant and burrow back
    underground.

I laughed really hard when they were doing the shots. Was the idea that Wilf was firing and had no idea why they weren’t dying so kept shooting.

Wilf would have been far too young to have served in the war. He would only have been in his mid-teens by the time it ended.
