    excellent lesson. I think you are the only on line teacher who has tips on using hands/fingers to get nice sounds without brute strength. What a difference it makes to avoid muscle cramps and frustration. About a year ago I found your lesson on gravity with bar chords. I honestly don't know how it worked, but suddenly I could play the dreaded B flat. Have been a "disciple" ever since!

Anyways I love your style of teaching. After watching this video I wrote a cool jazzy tune using this progression and a few barred chords! Thank you! I'm now a follower please pick up a guitarlele and do some tutorials. I'm all in! Thank you! Help me make the guitarlele famous and Funtastic! Thanks Ukulele Zen.😀
    I was frowning working on those chords, until you said SMILE at your hand. It helped. I have no music education and your explanations were spot on. Playing those first chord's together as the video was paused was good. The stuff after....well let's just say it will be a finger stretching weekend, haha. Thanks Stu 🙌
    Happy day all ways.

      Smiling! Yay!! Yes, It’s all about the pause! 😉 Taking the time to notice (and appreciate yourself and your efforts)...the space you bring to your practice is, in my view, more important than the content. Play on!

    Only half way through, but I really need to take a break. Those are some hand acrobatics!

      Revisiting the video. I got to about 9 mins now. But I really feel like my fingers are just not strong enough for some of this.
      Definitely still trying. Doing the easy versions for now, but practicing the more difficult versions.
      Barring chords is very difficult for my pointer to do without buzzing. So many different ways to bar chords. I really want to learn the finger bending though, so I can use my pinky still! Going to have to visit this again in the future.

    Dim7 is my favorite ukulele magic fingershape. 4 chords for the price of 1! And as you say, repeats every 3 frets. It was my motivation for digging into a little theory to find out why.

    Great lesson, many thanks. Wondering what strings your using as the tone is very nice?

    • @UkuleleZen
      @UkuleleZen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Low G fluorocarbons. The tone is partly the strings, but also the smooth surface of my nails (use 1500 grit sandpaper after you shape them), and most importantly - the way one touches the string. I’ll make a video someday about nails and finger style details… sometimes the details are difficult to show it to video it’s the sort of thing that you need to be in the same room for me to really show it. Thanks for watching and play on! -Stu

    I love that little tip you picked up for working the 2nd finger joint. I also have neglected training that very same joint and, like you, was thinking no way I can do it. I thought it was just my biological make up, where some can do it others can't. But there is hope. :) I will trying working that joint. As you say, very useful being able to bar those minor 7th, leaving the pinky free. Great tip thanks.

    Great video! For what its worth... being somewhat lazy, and maybe with a little less finger flexibility/ coordination than others, I've modded the 2nd (?) variation (the one working with Em7) to arrive at slightly different fingerings and chord voiceings, Mostly in the interests of less left hand effort (like I say, lazy!). Probably bad form, but I'm able to make it work. Here's a brief rundown for anyone interested: I play the Em7 chord as suggested (barring bottom two notes with the middle finger; and getting the top string D note with my ring finger). From there I finger the E dim7 chord like you would using a basic G7 chord shape, but sliding that form up two frets. Then I add the Bb on the bottom (G) string with my thumb. For the Am7, (if I'm really lazy!) I use the chord shape like that for a basic G minor (0231), but move that up two frets ( so, 0453). Different voicing and not as good as that used in the video, but still an Am7 I think (7th from the open G string). I complete the riff with the regular D7 / D6 options, but sometimes add my own makeshift approximation of the D7+5 playing 322x, or 3223. In all, to my ear not as good as the video instructions, but minimizes left hand movement and fingering work for us lazy types.

    i realized that the order of the strings are different from the regular string order. Could you share what is your setup? :)

    • @ReddoFreddo
      @ReddoFreddo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your Ukulele is the more common Soprano variety (I think that's what it's called) and its G string is an octave higher. Like a Barbarian I just moved my upper 3 strings to the back, so if I want this Tenor tuning or Low G tuning or whatever it's called, I tune it GCEA, and if I want the soprano tuning, with a twist, I tune it CEAg, because I'm a poor mop who can't afford 2 ukuleles.
