    I have no idea why PLD got that stupid contract on the first place. There was nothing in his body of work to indicate he was worth 8.5x8.
    NHL GMs are like your high school girlfriend: “I can change him!”

      Nah, the Caps' Brian MacLellan, I think, is being pretty smart here. The Caps are on a weird timeline. They're no longer Cup contenders. They're closing out the Ovechkin Era, which they hope to end with Ovechkin toppling Gretzky's goal scoring record. After that, there will be a teardown, and the team will rebuild for 2-3 years. So, basically, if Dubois can find his game, great, he'll help Ovechkin's offense, particularly on the power play, and then he can either be part of the Caps' rebuild or ask to be traded to more enthusiastic teams. If he doesn't find his game, he'll burn another 3-4 years off this contract playing for a rebuilding team, after which it'll be much easier to either trade Dubois or buy out the remainder of his contract. MacLellan ain't dumb.

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CR_240 PLD is lucky to have lasted so long in the NHL considering how many teams in that league for which he's played (3) and how high he was drafted by the Blue Jackets (3rd). That said, of the last 3 seasons, his regular-season average points/game (0.488 [40 {16 goals} over 82 games]) was the worst, with the 2020-21 season (0.457 [21 {9 goals} over 46 games]) having resulted in his worst such average. On average points per playoff game, his 0.2 from this postseason (1 goal scored over 5 games) is arguably his worst as an NHLer. Maybe he'll fit into the Caps' system but only time will tell if he will.

      The Habs avoided in 2012 another bust via having let the Oilers draft winger Nail Yakupov at 1st overall. Habs got Alex Galchenyuk, who they'd trade after his 6th season with the team, as many as Yakupov lasted in the NHL before deciding to try his luck back home in the KHL.

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Daigle I vaguely remember as a bust but more recently Nail Yakupov (Russian Cyrillic: Наиль Раилович [Railovich] Яакупов), the latter a winger drafted by the Oilers. Flames’ winger Andrei Kuzmenko, who during his late-teens and earlier-20s had played for CSKA Moscow, a farm team of that KHL club or SKA Saint Petersburg, fit quite nicely into his newest hockey team’s lineup after a trade from the Canucks’ team that during the 2022 off-season had signed him to a 1-season contract and then 2-season one. Had the Canucks not re-signed him, he would’ve become an unrestricted free agent, but he was unusually old to be given a first NHL contract as in so many other cases, such a contract, upon its end, makes the player who signed it a restricted FA with neither arbitration rights nor 10.2(c) status. It’s remarkable PLD has lasted as long in the NHL as he has given how many teams for which he’s already played and how he’s ended up on each of them.

He never tightened his skates upon arriving in SJ and they sent him back to Russia. The next generation was Mogilny, when a contract was due the following year his numbers were always stellar. Different world as concerned hockey at that time.

      @jon8004 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oshie? Dude, Oshie may have already played his last game. He's being held together with duct tape. At best, he retires at the end of the upcoming season. The Caps aren't Cup contenders anymore and aren't trying to be. They have two more years on Ovechkin's contract, and they'd like to see him beat Gretzky. They're also kind of rebuilding the team, but they can't do that in earnest until Ovechkin retires. At that point, they'll fully commit. If Dubois finds his game, great, he'll be a part of that, or he can even request a trade (provided, again, he rediscovers his game). If he doesn't find his game, by the time the Caps are ready to compete again, Dubois's contract will be easy to trade or buy out. All these fans are like, "The Caps are so dumb." I dunno. Look closer.
