John is a class act guy. He made it clear he wants to stay.
It was time. Respect to Johnny T for being a team player and handing over the torch to 34. This is a big moment for the Leafs. Hopefully this is a big step gaining traction in progressing past the 1st round.

in front of the cameras Tavares is on board with this decision but what really happened is management gave him a choice - you can either have a nice warm and fuzzy press conference to hand the C over to Austin OR you can get stripped of it .your choice !!!
Auston wearing running shoes and a Hanes undershirt to this event is an example of how he isn't mature or professional enough to be a team captain in the NHL. Especially one that plays under a pressure-cooker like Toronto. Can anyone see a player like Sidney Crosby ( a true winner and true leader) dressing this way to a press conference like this where he was being named captain?
in a way, the varying dress sense between tavares professional attire compared to Matthews pro-casual fit, really signifies a change not only in captaincy but in generations.

About time, I love John as a player, but I always found it weird to grow a group of guys up together then bring in a complete stranger and make him captain, it set a weird tone from day 1. Nylander for A all day.

About time should have been captain long time ago. Dubas didn’t do anything good for the team. Put this team in a situation that they need to win next 4 years or else. Defense still a problem never got fixed, still goalie issues unless Woll or Dennis be the future. He just took players in and out, in and out. Vet players that will never win Stanley Cup. What the hell moving Marner to Matthews Marner to Tavares Marner to Matthews year after year after year. How are they going to get use to each others play. Dubas and Keefe biggest mistake in Leafs franchise.
Weather Matthews is the captain or not there will be no difference then the last couple of seasons. LOL
at around 17 50 Tree says " not that anything is wrong " THe team has won 1 bloody round in the 6 years Tavares was captain .Yes something is absolutlely wrong !!!!!

great work leafs. Matthews is your most talented player. but making your most selfish, one-dimensional player the team captain makes no sense. he's also immature. The most talented does not necessarily equal leader, captain material. Morgan Rielly would be a much better choice. better role model, more mature. Can anyone remember who the captain of the Oilers was in the 80's? it wasn't the best player of all time -some guy named Wayne Gretzky. There are many other great examples but this one should resonate. And Gretzky was in no way selfish or one-dimensional.
Tavares is twice the player Matthews is. This is a travesty. Toronto never making a splash with these ridiculous decisions.

Nylander seems a bit too juvenile at times.
I think Willy is the 2nd best player on the team for offense. But I think he would just be a bit passive as a leader. He is very cool and chill, but sometimes too much so.
I think Matthew's earned the C when he went nuts after Reaves fight. And when he scored 69 goals. And when he started blocking and hitting. I love willy, but no man other than maybe Reilly could be the captain.
And nobody has worked as hard to be the best as Matthew's, just every year exponentially better across the ice. Man's PR just keeps getting broken.
He also signed a contract almost immediately, as opposed to willy who imo dragged it out annoyingly long.
Again, amazing player. But AM34 is the best on the team, and 2nd or 3rd in the entire league.
