I've had this issue with a University-owned 2008 Ford Explorer. But most days it would start after a few tries. So, we didn't worry about it. Yesterday I was stuck in the hot sun far away from my office for almost an hour. It wouldn't start! Then I found your video and tried jiggling and pushing in the key. It worked!!! Thank you so much!!

My mother-in-laws 2004 sport trac would act completely normal but would not crank or turn over. I was trouble shooting it most of the day. Saw this video and figured I would go back outside one more time and see if this would work and BINGO, It fired right up. Thank you for taking the time to make videos that help out others.

Thank you! I have this problem right now on my 2008 Escape. Watching your videos helps me to understand the problem and what is needed. They also help me to decide to fix it myself or get professional help when I see that it is above my capability.....not to mention that I don't sound so ignorant when I do get professional help. Excellent information.
I do have one question: Which wears out first, the cylinder or the housing? Most videos show that replacing the housing fixes the problem.

I have this issue on my 2008 Focus. As a temp fix I've been periodically using plumber's tape (the white Teflon tape that goes on pipe threads) to wrap around the end of the cylinder that makes contact with the steering column portion. This increases the "bite" and allows the cylinder to engage the starting mechanism in the steering column as it should. This fix lasts for maybe 1-2 months at a time at which point I repeat the process. You may have to play around with how many times you wrap the cylinder with the Teflon tape but you'll find the sweet spot. It's extra sweet too because it's much cheaper and less of a hassle than it is to swap keys and all that jazz. Hope this helps!

YES! FordTechMakuloco, Thank you for the great tip! This is the issue with my 2004 Expedition. I doesn't start when its below freezing. I'm guessing at those temps, the metal has contracted just enough to not touch. It's 27 degrees and I just started the Expo by doing exactly what you did in this video. This is the 3rd video of yours that has helped me greatly. Godspeed, to you.

Have a 09 Mariner with this issue currently at the shop. The Ford Dealer across the street literally had no knowledge of this issue. In the end we ordered a 'lock cylinder housing'. The switch itself is okay can turn manually and car fires right up. Had a similiar issue on a Wrangler where the 'ignition switch actuator' broke and cause a no crank no start also. Can also send 12 volts down the blue/white wire and it should crank over. Via power probe. But super simple to pop cover off column and pull switch and manually turn. 5.5 mm socket/ratchet and flat head is all ya need!

This also applies to the F150 2006 I literally tried everything . I change the starter, checked all the fuses . I could only turn the key forward and jumped the starter to get the truck started but still could not figure out what was not allowing it to start. After this video, I now know what’s wrong with it. This just happened to my motherinlaws car and I just bought the key cylinder from the dealership for almost $160.00 got home and looked to see how to install it an saw your video, I returned the key cylinder and bought the lock housing instead, I installed it and the Escape started up again with no problem at all, it took me about three hours but I am so glad that I didn't waste $160.00 for no reason on the ignition lock cylinder when replacing the lock housing did the trick.

Thank you! This is exactly the issue i have!
I have a 2009 Mercury Milan which is basically the ford fusion/focus.
And it has gotten so bad it takes almost an hour of wiggling and jiggling and pushing to finally get it to start.
Works no problem in the cold, im guessing because the cold weather shrinks the metal which allows it to pop out easier. But after work when its hot it takes forever to find that sweet spot. Again guessing because with the warmer conditions, the metal parts have expanded more which makes it harder for that detent to pop out and engage.
But now, where can i buy and replace that. Have to this weekend.

This video helped and educated me. Question: will this trick stop working soon? I find myself having to try new ways to turn my key.. Jiggle it... Slow motion turn, and they kind of work for a few days in a row. It worries me that the problem is going to get worse. Sometimes it takes minutes or seconds. Sometimes i get weird battery saver messages. It is inconsistent. If I go days without driving it, it REALLY looks like it won't start... But it eventually does. I'm not sure if I should keep on doing special key tricks, or replace it. My current plan is to replace the ignition when the key absolutely fails... But this could be anywhere at any time. So basically will this trick keep working or should I plan to replace the ignition? Thanks so much.

Dealing with a pats1 on a Battery long dead 96 taurus ,didnt have the chipped key so the anti theft system went off .
    Sirens ,flashing marker lights,no crank,no start .
Not sure exactly what worked but after charging battery I took negative cable off battery and let sit overnight.
Unlocked door with unchipped key, opened hood, locked all doors, placed negative cable back on,set alarm off, marker lights flashing, stuffed the siren with a shirt before hand thankfully ,then unlocked driver door with the unchipped key, closed door ,foot on brake ,turned ignition....had dash lights , no crank, behind the interior flashing light by drivers left leg there is a button.
With key in on possion I held the button for a while and eventually the blinking stopped and I heard a click, kept holding button down and other series of blinking and a click, kept hold button, until another blinking and clicking and the alarm turned off and the car started.
Total of 3 blinking and click sequences.
I was apprehensive about turning it off but it hasn't had any issues starting without the chipped key so far.
Eventually going to get a real key made for it but this worked in a pinch.
Again not sure exactly what did the trick but this is what worked for me.

Very informative video! My question is about my friend's 1999 E-150 conversion van with the 5.4. Yesterday it died in traffic and wouldn't re-start. No crank, nothing but a clicking from the starter. He's worried that maybe something really bad happened like a broken timing chain. The van, by the way, has a remote controlled anti theft system installed. Recently he replaced the fuel pump, along with an injector. His check engine light was on and the codes given were for O-2 sensors. He cleaned and re-installed them which caused the check engine light to go out for a few days, then back on.Any ideas? Thanks!

2002 ford focus has a history of factory alarm not disarming when it makes noise. This made me bypass it for years by pressing the valet button all the time. 2 days ago, I was working with the battery cable replacing one of the connectors of the (red) wires. After the job was done, car started w/o any problem. Drove the car to the gas station and when I started the car again, I heard a loud click together with the cranking. I did twice and heard the same thing, but I was able to drive. I continue driving for 20 miles to my destination, then never started again. AAA did a jumpstart and nothing happened. According to AAA test battery is good. Symptoms, No crank, no start, dead dashboard indicators, turning the key all position no response. When opening the door, continuous buzzing sound. Parking light, dome light, radio, hatch back switch and horn all works fine. To make the buzzing stop, I remove the 20 amp fuse right beside the alarm box under the steering wheel. Now without the fuse from the alarm box, insert the key will make the bell sound which you always hear. When you put the fuse back, buzzing again. Still no crank no start. Hope you could help. Also, I wiggled the key many times while turning, nothing happened.

2002 was a real bad year for clusters dying out real bad year. Which fuse number is it exactly. I have changed many clusters for this concern in the past they do all sorts of weird things once they start going bad. Do the head lamps work and shine bright?

    • @pricelessclips

I read many tips online. Most of them concluded that its the ignition switch which is $57. I tried that didn't work. At the engine compartment fuse box, I have the fuse tester for small fuses and all was good. Large fuses was set to be tested when I get a the circuit tester screwdriver light type. I went to o'reilly, auto zone and napa, to get a ignition relay and most of them gave me the $16 small black rectangular relay which The book says "Power hold relay" didn't work. The book say the big square relay is the "ignition relay" $19 which napa later called it starter relay. Still didn't work. I was ready to pull the Starter Motor untill I started checking the large fuses with my new circuit tester and discovered that F1, F2 was dead, but looks good. F8 which I didn't know is the "Ignition fuse"Light up on one side and not in the other which makes a buzz inside the car when touched. That one has a cut in the middle. $5 30amp fuse was the solution. Question? Using circuit tester screwdriver type 50% of the small fuses from the engine compartment fuse box didn't light up. 90% of all the fuses inside the car didn't light up, but all the small fuses say good using the little tester that is tester/puller combo. Thanks

Is there a video on removing the lock module to replace it? I have one on the way to replace the one on my daughters 08 Focus. BTW the part 9L8Z-3511-A does not show in any of the online parts catalogs as correct for the 08 Focus but I was assured before I ordered it is correct for the 08 Focus. Looking forward to getting it in the car she has to start the car using a screwdriver to turn the ignition switch.Brian, Thanks so much for posting these videos we have six Fords at our house and you have been a huge help in me keeping them going. I hope it is as worthwhile for you to make and post them as it is for us to watch.

+R Webb Got it done. Part came in the mail and we jumped on it before my daughter had to go back to school. it has been getting tougher and tougher to start she was lucky it went while she was at home and not six hours away. To remove the security screw I used my Dremel oscillating saw and cut a notch in the head of the rounded head of the screw then took it right out with a screw driver. Almost took longer to type it in than to do it.

Just fixed my no crank problem. Turned out to be ground issue on the starter mounting bolts even though they were still tight and torqued down. I think it is because when pulled it two years ago while doing trans work I put anti-sieze on every bolt. This time I added dielectric grease to them.

    • @FordTechMakuloco

Thanks for calling it the lock and not switch. I tell people all the time to throw away their massive key chains which holds the car key. That weight on the lock is too much for it. The key in the lock turns which pushes a rod in the column down to the SWITCH itself. If the ignition lock gets sloppy or starts getting hard to turn simply replace it for a few bucks. If you cannot turn it it a hell to get that cylinder out. Have a spare key too.

Alright first time ever asking , but here goes. Have a 2005 Navigator 6hp trans , has a 90 percent of the time no crank issue. No pcm grounding of starter relay. Ids shows park and neutral as ok in pcm and 4x4 pids list , also shows correct start run and acc positions. However shows open on all four contact plate switches. Since there is no dtr sensor, I wonder whether the transfer case contacts are being used as a secondary input to pcm for starting. Cannot find any decent info that pertains directly to the 6hp setup. Hoping with your experience you may have run into something like this before?

I am currently having the same issues with my 08 Ford Escape. My mechanic finally started it with so much power, but I do not have enough strength to do so. I am going to try this technique after work today. Did anything come out of this, did ford do a recall on i? This is a major problem, I was stuck for hours trying to get the car started, then had it towed to my mechanic. I have a feeling this is going to be a continuous issue.

Great content you have in your channel. I need help with a 2014 focus. Car was at the DMV and just died. They jumped the car off and drove it home, after that the car wouldn't start. New battery, took the starter out and tested good. Starting system fault message displaying and I think BCM code in memory. Can you help me with basic checks or ideas on how try to resolve the issue . Any help will be appreciated . Thank you . God Bless.

Is there something similar with 2008 Explorers? I've got one where it won't start unless you push IN on the ignition lock switch. Figured it was the ignition switch but haven't seen if the Explorers also have the faulty ignition lock modules that so many of the Escapes had problems with.

Have the same issue with a no crank no start on a 2014 transit connect with low miles. had a dealer installed remote start module that we thought was causing the issue... removed the module and removed the splices that had been made.. still has the same issue.. checked the start wire (blue/white) from the ignition switch all the way past the BCM and it has a good clear signal when turning to start position. the PCM is registering as 'crank' in the key position PID, fuse 13 has power (to starter relay) and the starter relay is good. I can jump pins 3&5 under the relay, and the starter will turn over fine.. but of course no start. I am unable to figure out exactly what is keeping this vehicle from starting. Everything i have checked proves to be fine.. but i just cant get it to turn over. Any suggestions?

How long can you get away with that(approx.) before it finally needs to be changed?? What would you charge to change it ? Thanks. I'm not far from your shop and i have a 2010 Escape doing that intermittently.

so can I bug you for a wiring diagram LOL. My ignition switch is good, and my starting diode, fuse, and relay are all good but still will not start using a key. Is there a simple way to bypass the neutral safety switch so I can see if that is the problem?

I dont subscribe to anything and I just subscribed to you (on my wifes account, ha!). Hopefully you monetize your videos because they are great. This tip lead me to avoiding somewhere between $500 and $3000 worth of repair and possibly having to take the airbag out and putting it back in. I cant thank you enough!

I'm having a similar although not the same issue, with my 2009 Ford Focus... It was working fine for the last few weeks since I bought it, and the battery reads on the tester as being over 80% good, as well as everything else working when the car is running, and I have never had a problem starting it before, but yesterday and today when I went to start it, it did a couple of mini cranks I guess you might call them, and then just started clicking... It did that a couple of times, until I put a battery booster on it, after which it fired right up... Any ideas??? I'm from Minnesota by the way if that matters or helps any in the diagnosis

Make sure you do not get the name ignition switch and lock cylinder mixed up. The ignition switch is not where the key is. Its just a lock cylinder.
