This is the best video on the replacement of ignition collar. I just completed the installation of ignition collar on my 2009 Ford Escape LTD with v6. Follow Chris's advice. Beware there are 4 wiring harnesses that have to be disconnected and reinstall. Also beware the new collar come with the ignition switch so the new unit does not look like the old one. The chisel trick works great on security bolt, I had to chisel it several times to get "hand loose". Trickiest part is getting the 5.5mm bolt in front of the ignition key out and back in the 1/4" ratchet with swivel does the trick (this is the only reason I see to pull the steering wheel). It is better to align the bottom and ignition 5.5mm bolts first on reassembly then the top and finally security bolt. I appreciate this video so much I left him a little $ thanks. This saved me big time!
Your video is dead on fantastic. You covered every single step. I'm a 69 yr old woman and you made it easy to replace the housing on my 2011 Ford Escape. ( My husband was pretty proud of me too!) It saved me probably about $600 at the dealership. I didn't have to remove the airbag either which I absolutely did not want to do! I will look to your videos 1st for any other problems I have with my vehicle and tell others about "NoNonsenseKnowHow" Thanks so much.
I just bought a 2008 Ford escape hybrid for 1500 bucks looking through the receipts in the glove compartment it had been in the shop multiple times for a no start condition. The guy that towed it to my house said he has towed this car at least seven times. After some research and some basic countryman knowledge and old-timer skills. I did the first thing you do when there’s any electronica problem on any vehicle. This is what we did in the good old days boys and this is what everybody should do now. First thing you do is make sure the ground from your battery to the frame is excellent. That means disconnect the bolt that attaches to the frame of the vehicle and make sure it is polished and clean and that ground cable from the 12 V battery is getting an excellent connection. Once I did this all the codes disappeared the mysteriously problem vanished. Can you believe it now I have a beautiful Ford escape hybrid that I got for 1500 bucks that runs like a dream. Do not focus on the mysteriously hybrid battery issues that cost thousands of dollars start with the cheapest easiest thing to do every single timeOn every car. Any electrical problem start with your ground. All these cars just like in the good all days need a good solid ground to start.
Bought part on Amazon for $47... bolt for $5.... saved myself $700 from what the dealer quoted. I'm terrible with car fixes normally but your video was easy to follow and well done. Thank you so much!
You are a KING! For months I've been having to start the car for my wife as she could figure out how to toggle the key. Checked with the shop and they wanted $350 - $500! Followed your instructions exactly, and it's working like new. So great that you are here to help the clueless like me. Thank you!!!!
THIS IS THE ONE. I've watched a few dozen of TH-cam Ford Escape ignition collar replace videos. Had me with the chisel trick. I used a Chinesium Harborfreight screwdriver sharpened on the driveway. Plus no airbag or clock spring removal. I just fixed my 2008 Mazda Tribute. (rebadged Ford Escape) Only suggestion I can add, is go to the hardware store, buy a 8x125 "hex head" bolt rather than use the "security" torque break-off bolt. Just in case ... Ain't nobody gonna go to steal an 14 year old Ford Escape. THANKS for the video.
Out of all the videos I’ve seen this…. This is the one ☝️. Everyone removes the whole steering wheel making it more complicated then it should be just to get to the ignition switch, you are a time/ life saver thanks for the video man !!
My son did this exact repair on my 2010 Escape! Once we received the part from Rock Auto he had it buttoned back up in little under an hour! Great instructional video made the repair easy! Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!!!!
My ford dealer told me this would be a $800 repair. So glad to see that it can be fixed with parts from Amazon and an afternoon of my time! Thank you so much! ❤️🔥
Thank you! Repaired my 2008 Ford Escape in less than 1 hour! Works perfect now. Starts with no effort at all. A lifesaving video! Saved me hundreds of dollars.
Love this video, can't wait to repair this in the spring! I'm that person who has to push the key in, then twist. Tire guy's always call me asking how to start my car and that I should get this fixed. It's been like this for over 5 years, I'm in no rush. Be gentle if you have to push & twist.
Thank you for the video As a layman I followed your video and successfully changed the housing without removing the steering wheel with limited tools. God bless you
Great video Chris! You just saved me $300 and a lot of unnecessary hassle. The Mercury dealership wanted $125 just to diagnose the problem (which I already knew what it was having replaced the ignition switch to no avail and seeing your video). The local car shop wanted $400 to replace the unit. I purchased one on Amazon for $90 and had this fixed in a little more than an hour. I purchased a swivel adapter set from Harbor Freight for $8 and a small cold chisel at the Depot for $5 and it made the job much easier. Also didn't have to remove the steering wheel as suggested on other videos. Thanks again and bravo!
Ditto , video was an absolute Godsend! Came home playing this video after visiting three good mechanics today .Now my car starts up every time it was my ignition switch!
THANK YOU!! My 2008 Ford Escape has had ignition issues for over a year that have gotten progressively worse. I would push my key in and wiggle it around to start it, but eventually even that stopped working. All the other videos on youtube wanted me to take apart the whole steering wheel, which requires specialized tools, and start with replacing the whole ignition module rather than just the ignition switch. I was about to give up until I saw your video, and replaced the switch for a new one for $45. You saved me $500!
Just wanted to add another thank you... today (1 year later) the new switch failed, and this time it failed within a day. I was stuck in a Target parking lot. I looked up your video again in my history to remember what size socket I need (5.5), walked across the street to Home Depot, got it all open and started my car with a screwdriver. The part is under warranty so I'm getting a free replacement tomorrow. Too bad the part is so prone to breaking, but at least it's an easy fix!
OMG!! I cannot thank you enough!! This video saved me time from having to find something to take the steering wheel off and all that. It took me a little while because I didnt have the swivel head but my landlord helped come up with another solution to get the bolt out in that tiny area. Then I couldnt get it to line up with the wipers/signal. BUT I got it on!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! My mom couldnt get it to start before but I always could. Now she can too!!
This is the video to watch if you have this issue. Very easy fix that I'd been told would cost about $1000. Did it in 30 minutes for the cost of the part. Thanks for the video!
Perfect video to the point and helpful. My issue was the whole housing worn out like you said. And the link to the one on amazon super helpful. Saved me $100! Always a treat seeing your videos. 4 years old and still helping!
Took my 09 Mariner to get a quote on this repair. Was quoted $600.00. Thanks to your video I did the job myself. You sir are a lifesaver. Thanks so much.
This is the best version Ive seen on doing this replacement. Edit: Following his instructions took about an hour and a half. My ignition turns on CRISP now. Not loose at all, the movement is much tighter.
Your video was great! So easy to follow your directions. 2010 mercury mariner , Ordered a new ignition housing which was 75$ from parts geek. It came with a new ignition switch as well. Changed it out with my son in about an hour. Used a dremel to make a cut in that bolt. Easy! Saved me tons of money! ❤🎉 Thankyou so much!
Dude thank you so much!! I had a crank no start in 17 degree weather trying to go to work and found this video. Took me about an hour and a half to replace my ignition switch on my 2010 Ford Focus SE. 10/10 would recommend 💕💕
I do mobile auto repair. I watched this video on the way to the car. Quickest diagnosis I ever did lol Started the car by testing the fuse then popped out the ignition switch and started the car again. 10 minutes later I’m sitting in my truck in the AC. Waiting for AutoZone to deliver the ignition switch here at the customers house
Thx! VERY MUCH!!! Took me a lot longer than it should have. 😳. About three hours. You almost have to be a contortionist to get some of screws back in. One trick I discovered is putting a 5.5 mm on an allen wrench to remove/reinstall the screws especially the one on the right side of the steering wheel if you don't have a wobble.
I just purchased a replacement and was going to pull the airbag etc - luckily for me I saw this. Need to do my daughters car this week-end - thanks again!
This video was an absolute God send. Well done and thank you very much. This turned a whole day event into an hr long pleasure. I had my old unit out in 15min flat after following these steps.
I have a 2008 Ford Focus and I was certain the ignition switch was the culprit but your excellent video educated me and I discovered the mechanism (190K miles on the car) was at fault! I purchased 989-019 from Amazon vendor Yikesai - Vendor claims part is for 2009 Focus and up so its not supposed to be correct for a 2008 Focus but it looked exactly like my cars part. It was priced at $45 WITH bolt and ignition switch attached. It was exactly the part i needed so maybe vendor has to revise the part fitment. Great Video Thank you!
I think I'm in love with you right now!!I love how short sweet and to simple you make things to understand,ALOT of people making these videos should take notes from u!Thank You
Great video! Just replace the housing on our 2010 Ford Focus and ignition works like a charm. I initially followed other videos about replacing the ignition switch but the problem was still there. Your video explained everything in great detail and step-by-step instructions. The entire housing cost me $120 at a local auto parts store. It took me 2 hours to replace. The trickiest part for me was getting that one 5.5 mm bolt out above the key housing (8:24) , had to make a trip to the hardware store to get a swivel adapter. Thanks a bunch, really helpful.
I was going to throw an ignition switch at the problem also. I was watching another channel and he also mentioned that it is not always the ignition switch but he didn't show the symptom of a bad housing like this video showed. Nice tip about the swivel adapter.
I purchased a completed assy just in case, completed the task in approx 1.5 hrs. Thank you for a solid detailed video on what to look for and how for the R&R of the assy. There is no way I would have located those hidden screws, nor had the confidence to push and pull in certain areas. THANK YOU! Terry - Vancouver BC.
Just did this today. Thank you so much for this! All other videos had the steering wheel pulled off and yours saved so much time. To any future people doing this: be sure you either use a swivel adapter or a 1/4” socket wrench for the 3rd screw on the right side. It’s a tight fit with the wheel on. Overall took around an hour and saved about $500 (most places are charging $550-$650 to do this!)
Oh HELL YES thank you for going over pulling it without pulling the steering wheel!!! I thought I could get it but your confirmation makes me feel much better about it.
Watch your video and it was perfect, I ordered replacement part and it went on just as you described. Thx I watch another video from another mechanic and he said to take the steering wheel off. Boy you saved me so much time and headache.
Great video! I liked that I didn't have to pull off the steering wheel like a different video I watched on this said to do. The part for my vehicle only cost me $45 on Amazon compared to the big box store price of $189. I did find that you can simply use a screwdriver and hammer instead of the cold chisel to remove the headless bolt. It took me about an hour and a half to do. Thanks for saving me some money. I enjoy all these do it yourself video's that save me money!
Worked great! It was some key component, pluged the key in and used a flat-heat on the other thing and started right up. Gonna be using a screwdriver for a while, but beats having to use my "special technique" every time! Hardest part about this job was finding the two socket heads to get those three screws out! thanks again
Good stuff man👍 Anyone doubting if this works.. I can tell you 100% this works. I just did it today and only had to play with putting the lock cylinder into the new assembly.. But the whole thing took about 2.5 hrs.. Not bad considering that I'm not a mechanic 😊 For the last few weeks, I was starting my car with a screwdriver and now.. It works better than it did when I bought the car. When I bought it.. the car had 20,000k..Now it has 267k...Solid fix🙌
Still driving my 2010 Escape because I love it. Thank you so much for this video. It saved me. Hubs was able to troubleshoot and fix it with your video.
Great video! My mechanic is telling me he doesn't mess with ignitions because of the PATS system on the key, but you just showed that you don't even need to get a new key! Not sure if I want to mess with replacing the lock cylinder side of it, but I might try to just drop the ignition switch and start my car with a screwdriver from now on :)
Great job on this video. It made it very easy. Thank you. Comments: For those without a 5.5 mm metric socket, 7/32 works. Another comment: turn the "D" connector in the ignition housing to match the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder must go into the new housing the way it came out of the old housing.
Wow! This was extremely helpful! Thank you for posting this. It took about three hours to finish. The part about using the chisel to remove the anti theft bolt was also very good information.
U saved my life brother !!! Thank you so much all I had to do was take out and reconnect my ignition switch 🙌🏾🙌🏾 and it was absolutely free ! Thanks again brother
This is the best video about dealing with this on TH-cam. This was my first big job on a car by myself and I killed it 😎. I didn't have all the tools you had, so I had to think outside the box lol. Anyway, thank you so much for this video. You help me save a few hundred bucks. 💯😎✅.
i am so greatful a came across this video. just spent a long time messing with my girlfriends car trying to fix it i felt defeated. i didn't feel smart at all, now im gonna get it fixed im sure its a loose ignition module housing i should be able to start it just like you did to make sure.
Wow! That was much easier than the one I had to replace in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. The key got stuck in the ignition cylinder, and the owner tried getting it out and ended up breaking part of the ignition cylinder housing. Necessitating the removal of the steering wheel etc. What a pain! Nice video!
Ford must be making a fortune off selling these ignition modules. I haven't seen one aftermarket yet. They do so aftermarket parts to rebuild it though
Thank you for this video. The mechanic nearby was hyping up the issue telling me it was gonna be easy $400 fix. Now I see this is apparently a known problem with the model of vehicle I have and I hope others do check this out as well
I would like to say thank you so much for your tutorial. I was able to fix my car by myself just following along. It definitely saved me money, again Thanks
Praise praise praise 100% to your video thank you for your detailed step-by-step instructions on how to replace the ignition lock mechanism on my 2012 Ford escape it seemed very daunting and overwhelming being a novice mechanic but selling parts and service for over 25 years the hardest part for me was getting the lock cylinder out of the housing and lining up the lock cylinder back in the new housing but my application was almost a carbon copy to this video again thank you for posting PS do not be cheap and get one from the junkyard it will burn you as those lock mechanisms could be worn as well I have a friend at Ford and he gave me his employee price at $100 well worth it to have my vehicle start on demand every time cheers
Just wanna say thanks, It was my first time doing this job and watching your video made it so simple and gave me a lot of confidence to do it. I appreciate you and your videos.
Thank you so much! I had only seen videos where they removed the steering wheel and I couldn’t do that. Then i came across your video and I bought the ignition lock housing ($48)off Amazon and cold punch/chose set ($8) and I did it.
This worked great! thank you! I was able to troubleshoot most of it by starting my 2008 ford focus with my remote start, but wouldn't start when inserting the key. And also thanks for showing how to do this without removing the steering wheel!
excellent video one hundred percent accurate right to the point very professional and a life saver I was stranded in a no start situation using this video as a guide I removed the ignition switch using a screwdriver and started the car right up. thanks Chris
Thank you so much for this. I was fighting getting the starter out to take it to get tested. Followed this and was able to check the starter myself. Ignition switch and cylinder engagement was the problem.
Awesome, man. The only issue I had was, the cylinder would not seat in the replacement housing, initially. I had to remove the switch and have a helper turn the shaft counterclockwise a little and then it went into place. Thanks, bud! {subscribed!}
Such a great video! Thank you! I’d already changed out my ignition switch and still had a problem starting my car. This video helped diagnose that it was the housing instead.
Thank you so much for this video. I still can't get mine to work quite right at the moment but with a screwdriver, I can get to and from work until I can fix it properly!..well done sir!
My friend has a 2009 Focus. Thanks to your video I was able to trouble shoot and figure out she had a bad lock housing. I got a new lock housing/ignition switch with bolt from Amazon for $46.00 and installed it in less than a hour. Great video showed me everything I needed to know. Thanks
You're the bomb! Now I know exactly what to do to permanently fix that crappy design. Well, not a bad design, but replace crappy materials. Ty! Love your content!
Thank you very much. Whoever has the same problem, please refer to this video. It took a little less than two hours ( because we had some tool adaptation issues). Thanks again
Thank you , thank you , thank you for this video. I was able to do the replace in less than an hour. now I don't have to use the gorilla tape Mickey Mouse method. Only thing I didn't have was the movable knuckle ratchet piece for that hard to get to screw. So I used a small socket and used a large size Allen wrench to the back of the socket to get the screw out. Other than that it went smooth and fast and now works perfectly and at a fraction of the cost at the mechanic shop. thank you !!!!!!!!
Glad I found your video! I was going to pull the steering wheel, but followed your video and had the new lock module installed in my wife's '08 Mariner in about an hour. Thank you for the great video!!
Marvelous to hear you found the video informative and happy to hear you got it squared away no problem! Really appreciate you dropping a comment thanks
Thank you for the tutorial! This worked perfectly for my 2008 ford escape. You were right too, you need that 5.5mm socket, it's impossible to get those first 3 screws without it
This is the best video on the replacement of ignition collar.
( My husband was pretty proud of me too!) there are dozens of similar videos - but none are filmed as well and explain as completely as yours ! Thanks a bunch !
I broke the little nobby thing on top of the cylanoid that holds it in. Any suggestions?
I agree great job
I think it was best also
Bought part on Amazon for $47... bolt for $5.... saved myself $700 from what the dealer quoted. I'm terrible with car fixes normally but your video was easy to follow and well done. Thank you so much!
Awesome to hear the video helped you save a bunch of money! Good stuff
What bolt did you buy?
The dealership is always a rip off 😅
You are a KING! For months I've been having to start the car for my wife as she could figure out how to toggle the key. Checked with the shop and they wanted $350 - $500! Followed your instructions exactly, and it's working like new. So great that you are here to help the clueless like me. Thank you!!!!
what did you do to fix it. can i switch the starter relay with any other black fuse? 2:10
Fantastic succinct to the point. No wasted air time. But you also did not skip important steps. This is how every how to video should be filmed.

Awesome to hear you found the video useful and I really appreciate you posting your experience/feedback. Thanks Terry
Thank you. $76 and 30 minutes or so. Saved $500+. Works like new.
No problem. And good to hear
Just wanted you to know this video is still making a difference! Great detailed video that saves both time and money!
Awesome to hear that! Glad it was helpful
just finished the job and your video was invaluable. Thanks, saved me $300 labour.
Great to hear the video was helpful and I appreciate you dropping a comment Doug. Thanks
Best video out there. Watched it twice. Changed ignition switch in under 5 mins 🎉👊🏼
7/32” works if u don’t have a 5.5mm
Just fixed my daughter's 08 Focus. Swapped out the ignition housing. Thanks for the informative and easy to follow video!
Great to hear you were able to take care of it yourself and thanks for dropping a comment!
Thank you so much. Just changed lock Module in my wife's 2012 Escape using your video. So happy I didn't have to remove steering wheel or air bag.
No problem David! Happy the video was helpful and I appreciate the comment
Watch your video and it was perfect, I ordered replacement part and it went on just as you described. Thx
I watch another video from another mechanic and he said to take the steering wheel off.
Spot on video.. This job took less than a hour to complete... Especially not having to remove the steering wheel!!!
I like how you got to the point, and sped it up. If you’re mechanically inclined, your video is good. I don’t need any history of how things work lol
Wow! This was extremely helpful! Thank you for posting this. It took about three hours to finish. The part about using the chisel to remove the anti theft bolt was also very good information.
No problem! Glad you found it helpful
Just did this on my 2010 Focus following your video. Probably took about an hour. Thank you for this video!
Worked like a charm, great video. Now my son can drive his ford with no concerns. Feels like a brand new car.
Great tutorial...Teaching my son how to do this on his ford escape later today. Awesome Vid!!!!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Nice video!
Yeah they are definitely not all this easy, that's for sure!
Thank you a million thanks for making this video. Replaced the housing module today without any issues. Your video is the perfect tutorial for this!
Really happy to hear the video helped you out and I appreciate you leaving some feedback and tips for others! Thank you!
Just wanna say thanks, It was my first time doing this job and watching your video made it so simple and gave me a lot of confidence to do it. I appreciate you and your videos.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much! I had only seen videos where they removed the steering wheel and I couldn’t do that. Then i came across your video and I bought the ignition lock housing ($48)off Amazon and cold punch/chose set ($8) and I did it.
I just did my first ever car fix because of this video Thank You!!!
Awesome to hear that!
This worked great! thank you! I was able to troubleshoot most of it by starting my 2008 ford focus with my remote start, but wouldn't start when inserting the key. And also thanks for showing how to do this without removing the steering wheel!
Thanks for the video!....I used a dremel with a wheel for cutting metal and put a notch in that bolt...worked great!...Thanks again!
No problem! Glad it was useful to you. And yeah good call on the Dremel!
excellent video one hundred percent accurate right to the point very professional and a life saver
I was stranded in a no start situation using this video as a guide I removed the ignition switch using a screwdriver and started the car right up.
thanks Chris
Glad it helped out! And no prob!
You saved my a headache I have a C Max but the principle is the same finally found the fault thanks to your video. Thanks
You're welcome! Glad it helped
Thanks for the comprehensive video. If you didn't show the symptom of a bad housing, I might have only replaced the ignition switch. Excellent video!
Thank you so much for this. I was fighting getting the starter out to take it to get tested. Followed this and was able to check the starter myself. Ignition switch and cylinder engagement was the problem.
Awesome! Glad it helped ya out
Dude you just saved my life!!! Thank you so much for the wire in the relay trick. I'm going to fix it properly when I get paid
Glad I could help
Awesome, man. The only issue I had was, the cylinder would not seat in the replacement housing, initially. I had to remove the switch and have a helper turn the shaft counterclockwise a little and then it went into place. Thanks, bud! {subscribed!}
got you. Glad you were able to figure it out and get everything together. And thanks man I appreciate that
Such a great video! Thank you! I’d already changed out my ignition switch and still had a problem starting my car. This video helped diagnose that it was the housing instead.
Thank you so much for this video. I still can't get mine to work quite right at the moment but with a screwdriver, I can get to and from work until I can fix it properly!..well done sir!
You did it. This issue is not fun, especially being the last thing to check after all the fuses and relays. Very helpful. You saved me a lot of time.
My friend has a 2009 Focus. Thanks to your video I was able to trouble shoot and figure out she had a bad lock housing. I got a new lock housing/ignition switch with bolt from Amazon for $46.00 and installed it in less than a hour. Great video showed me everything I needed to know. Thanks
Perfect! Answered all my questions for 2010 Ford Escape.....no steering wheel removal. Thanks
You're welcome!
exillent brother. i just did that on a 2010 ford escape and your instructions worked perfect. it worked fantastic. thank you
I am completely grateful for this video! You’ve saved me time and money. Thank you so much for your content!
I just fixed my 2008 Mariner thanks to your video. Thank you!
Great job thank you for telling me about not needing to remove the steering wheel none of the other videos mentioned this
Unreal. Amazing and concise. Tyvm for your detail and ability to keep things on point and clear. W/o all the xtra verbiage and bs!!
Thank you so much for making this video! I just fixed my Escape in less than an hour.
Thank You for this great video. My son needs to do this on his Focus. Also, your explanation on the procedure was great.
Glad it was helpful. I appreciate your feedback! Thanks
There was an extra red cable we didn't know where it go. Now I know. Will do it tonight!
Thanks for your video, yes the other videos out there have you take the steering wheel off, air bag, etc. Great job, much appreciated!!
No problem and I appreciate the feedback! Thanks
Great instructional video. Was able to repair my focus with no issues
You're the bomb! Now I know exactly what to do to permanently fix that crappy design. Well, not a bad design, but replace crappy materials. Ty! Love your content!
Chris thank you for awesome video. I just replaced entire assembly and after replacement it starts now... Thank you
No problem! Awesome to hear that it was helpful to you and you were able to knock it out yourself
Thank you very much. Whoever has the same problem, please refer to this video. It took a little less than two hours ( because we had some tool adaptation issues). Thanks again
Next level video 😮 I might have to start following this dude so I can work on all my cars 🧐
Awesome to hear the video was helpful and you took care of it yourself. Good stuff
This is really excellent. Thank you for explaining everything so effectively.
Glad it was helpful!
Just finished this job using this video. Suuuper helpful and right on point. Thank you !
You were right too, you need that 5.5mm socket, it's impossible to get those first 3 screws without it
That Ignition module part helped me BIG time. Thank you so much. I am so glad I came across this video. BIG TIME THANKS MAN!!
