Whitetails snort loudly when they are startled to reveal to them whatever predator might be nearby. They swish their tails as they run away and glance back to see what might be chasing them. It's a way to foil an ambush.

@@walkwithcarrie she smelled you. The only defense is to sit downwind of the deer. They have a more keen sense of smell than coyotes.
The sound she makes is called "blowing'. They do it to warn other deer of danger. She will also leave a scent that warns other deer. Bucks rarely do this they just get the hell outta Dodge. It's far more common with does.
ETA: They have poor eyesight. If you sit motionless they can't see you. They can see movement.

The exhaling through the nose does two things. One, the sound alerts other deer and two, they are also clearing their nose to then take in fresh scent. Another thing deer do is stomp their feet to get whatever has their attention to move if you are standing still and cannot be readily identified. I have spent many hours in the woods observing these wonderful animals.

    • @wholeass83

I was amazed when I caught on to the stomping. So freaking intelligent. They got me a few times like that. Then one day I seen a buck doing it right it front of me. He would stomp twice look around then take a step and repeat. That was the day I learned to not react to noises

I'm 50 years old, deep south denizen. Lifelong deer hunter. The snort is an alert, not sure about the clearing business. Bucks will also wheeze, which can startle the SHIT OUT OF YOU if close and unexpected. Stomping means you're busted and ya better take your shot quick. Bleating from does, fawns, and bucks have many lengths of duration and vocalization and many different meanings. Keep up peeping Tom on them! They are AMAZING animals, and are like dogs or goats- smart, inquisitive, and fill of personality.

    • @stevebishop1411
      @stevebishop1411 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@homeostasis4me485 I've seen tons of does stomp when they know something isn't quite right or they see you in your stand but can't quite figure it out. It's usually the older, smarter ones. They will be on alert, but 9 times out of 10, they will calm down and go back to browsing or doing what ever they were doing, if they don't wind you or see you move. I really think that when they stomp, they are trying to flush out whatever they think it is that they can't see. They want you to move so that they can verify what's wrong.

My dog was sitting still and quiet looking in the direction of 2 deer in our yard shortly ago. It was completely dark. I shone my flashlight briefly in the direction she was looking confirming 2 deer looking in our direction then turned it off. After 2-3 minutes, I heard this sound about 3-4 times. A minute later, they trotted off into the woods. I am surprised that in nearly 60 years I had never heard deer make this sound. Very cool.

I’ve read multiple comments that could be considered anti-hunting so I would just like to provide some education. First most hunters are not out for blood. Most hunters have a deep respect for the animals they hunt that non-hunters could not understand. Hunting has done more for conservation than any group like green peace. Hunters pump in millions of dollars for conservation efforts. There’s actually a tax on hunting equipment that goes into conservation efforts. Hunters are responsible for millions of acres being protects and conserved. Land that provides 4 season outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone both hunters and none hunters. Hunting is not about the kill for most. It’s about the experience. The kill is just a bonus that provides health organic meat for their families. I guarantee a deer harvested by a hunter has lived a much better life than any animal you’ll buy at a grocery store including meat labeled organic or grass feed.

We live in an area dubbed 'deer land' by the locals because of the huge herds of deer that they can see when driving down our road. We have them come through the yard every day, and they bring their fawns through too. I have lived here for over 30 years, and I've seen thousands of deer. They are really skittish and will bolt if the wind blows. But I have never hear one make that noise. Weird.

We are actually way over populated and the global problems is a people problem not an animal problem, we messed up the ego system the minute we set foot on an enviroment and started changing it, America was never over populated with animals before Americans came over, and the indians didn't mess with the enviroment or the population, they just did what the animals did and survived and thrived along with them, they didn't try to change anything and their was no global problems, their are many areas with no humans and they are doing very well actually.

Something just got eaten (made a real racket for a few minutes, you could hear it from far away) in the woods beside my garden in north-eastern France, trying to figure out what it was, I heard it being brought away by whatever got it, when I first heard it I thought it might be the cats fighting but ince outside you realise it is much bigger and noisier than a cat fight... don't think it was a young wild boar, didn't make pig noises and schreaks... my cat came running looking worried and glad to come in...

People don’t realize that whenever deer look at you and then look away, they are trying to get a better angle to see you so don’t move until they start walking again. Deer don’t have amazing eyesight so they look for movement instead of a silhouette.

I think it's a part of the snort wheeze but I think it's like there warning call the last 2 years I've had deer do this to me walking in the woods in the morning and pushed them out there beds and didn't see anything each time it happened after that

I have heard that at night, but it sounded sharper and i thought it was a large bird being attacked by a predator? Freaked me out, i went into get my handsome man...he said it was a deer.
I have heard the snort or exhale noise but what i had heard last night sounded like a very large teradactal or mongaloid size ancient bird thing.

I was in my ground blind this evening and was getting ready to pack up and leave when I heard this very same sound about 8 times. I've never heard this exact sound and was wondering if it was a gathering call. The deer never showed itself so I guess I got busted.

Doesn't mean your hunt is over. Maybe for that particular deer or even a group of deer with her. However I have had deer in front of me and heard 1 blowing off in the distance and the deer in front of me could not have cared less. I have also killed a big buck no longer than 20 minutes after a doe blew something else around my area.

The vast majority of hunters have a deep respect for deer that none hunters can not understand. Deer hunting pumps millions of dollars into conservative efforts. There is actually a tax on hunting equipment that goes to conservation efforts. Hunters have done more for conservation that groups like green peace could ever dream of. Millions of acres of land have been protected for public use because of hunters. Those public lands are then available for year round use and at the most people are hunting on those lands 2-3 months out of the year. Most hunters aren’t just about the kill it’s about the experience of seeing many different animals interact in a natural environment. Harvesting a deer that provides health organic meat for their families is just a bonus
