Honda HRV (2016) Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Switch Replacement

- If you get an orange parking brake trouble code on your dash with a red flashing P when you drive, I recommend getting the car scanned by A Honda or Acura dealer, or a well-equipped private shop to confirm it’s the EPB switch, then replace the switch as I will show you here. Of course you can gamble and assume it’s the switch, but if the cause is something else, you’re stuck with the part.

I found my HRV stuck in my garage with the parking brake stuck on from the night before. It was showing all the same symptoms you addressed in this video so I ordered the new switch for $20 and was able to get back up and running in no time. Because of this video, you saved me a $100+ tow cost and labor cost from a shop or dealer. Thank you so much for making this.

I owe you a debt of gratitude. Your video saved me untold amounts of money. Reading the internet, it seems dealerships have difficulty diagnosing the problem, sometimes replacing parts that don't need replacing. OBD scanners do nothing to help diagnose the problem. I can see how it misleads dealerships and others in misdiagnosing the problem. I went so far as disassembling the switch. I thought a good cleaning might help, but it was clean. I checked all the switches. All of them operated properly. One switch has a very flimsy actuator. That's the only possible problem I could see. I didn't expect a new switch would fix the problem, but it was a cheap fix to try, and the alternatives were going to be expensive. I gave it a try, and, presto, problem solved! Much appreciated.

Thanks for this video! I went ahead and bought a new switch off of Amazon and it worked! Also, when i took it apart there was all kinds of dry coffee exactly like you had on yours. My wife admitted to spilling coffee on the switch a few times 🤦🏽♂️
Hi there, thx for finding the video and glad it helped. It’s not your wife’s fault honestly, or any of our faults. The cup holders are too big and poorly designed without any flexible grips, but then again, this HRV was designed during Honda and Acura’s malaise era.
Hey William, this is Luis from México, I saw your video and this guided me to change the electronic brake, I ordered by Amazon (USD $16), I replaced the damage one and... Now the issue is fixed!!! Previoulsy I went with a Honda dealer to ask the cost of the part and the cost was more than USD$200, this video really helped to me and to my pocket...Really is appreciated...

Appreciate the video, ordered the part and followed this. Parking brake works now and light is off. My code reader also gave the code that said there was an open circuit and then an internal failure on the switch. All good now!
Glad to hear!! To this day, I still hate our cup holders. But my 2016 HRV otherwise has been great.
@@forevr_8 yea haha. I looked at my broken switch and took it apart a bit but couldn’t see anything obviously wrong with it. No spills, just a little dust but all well!
Mines been good too. I did have to replace the ignition button due to crapping out. Easy swap. Car still worked but had an annoying light in the dash.

Hi guys. I have a 2018 hrv / vezel, and I've got that parking brake flagging also. But I've also got lane departure lights, anti collision lights ets, and I'm getting notices to check my brake system.
I've also got a problem that when I press my brake pedal, my gear lever doesn't release at times, and I may have to wait a bit before the lever is released.
I've also noticed that my radar isn't picking up objects in front of me car. The radar is clean
Could it be the same brake switch also? I've taken my car to a few shops, abs no one has been able to find the problem as yet

Yikes that’s ridiculous! Yes it’s the switch that’s bad. Follow my instructions to replace and buy the part from your Honda dealer. Just give them your VIN to look up. Good luck

Love it. Glad to hear, and wish you a happy 2023! The button is in a bad spot and it malfunctions likely from coffee spilling on it bc the cup holder is too big and poorly designed. Honda and Acura’s malaise era was from the late 2000s to mid 2010s.
Honda told me it would be 600 to fix the back tail light it was electrical
Hi Carolyn, yes I am aware that some LED taillights burn our prematurely and Honda is ditching customers. I haven't had this issue thankfully. If you are a regular at your dealership, ask if they can cover the part under goodwill, and you pay the labour. Good luck.
How much did the replacement switch cost? Honda charge 300 dollars for it

Great video but I have an issue with this entire electric ebrake design by Honda. I have an Hrv with a 6 speed in it. There's been a couple of occasions that my car battery was dead. Just so happens that both times my car was sitting on a hillside and was unable to disengage it since it had no power going to it. If I could have disengaged it, I could've put it in neutral and popped the clurh to get it to crank. But thanks to Honda's shitty design with this, they prevented me from doing so.

What if both the break light and engine light appear? Could that be a more serious issue?
Hi there, the engine light would point to a different issue and is likely not related to the brakes. Have a technician check for both lights to find thé trouble codes.

You mean the e-brake is stuck on and won’t disengage? Try to click in your driver seatbelt first, put it into drive, and feather the gas pedal to see if it will release.

The one for mine was 77230-T7W-A02ZA but I’m in Canada. It might be a different part# in the USA. I recommend you contact your local dealer, give them your VIN and get the part number specific to your VIN

I hear you totally. Sometimes electronics isn’t ideal for all applications. If I had a manual transmission, I too would refer a mechanical e-brake lever
