Other movies are so bad, they kill the franchise. Dragon Ball Evolution is so bad, it went full circle and revived the franchise. It was so bad, the original creator felt the need to come out of retirement to show how it is done.
So in a way, we should give thanks to just that ONE thing. Thanks Dragonball Evolution, for being so shit, we got Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and Dragon Ball Super.
Actually, Battle Of Gods was already in development but after DBE, Toriyama decided to get involved again and that's how we ended up with Beerus and Whis. Beerus is based on his cat actually! During DBE's development Toriyama did try to give notes on how to do the franchise justice. It was ignored. Justin Chadwin actually sat down and read ALL of DB and DBZ in preparation for the role and was sad when the film ended using none of it which is sad because Toriyama is actually a big fan of western sci-fi movies like The Terminator and Star Wars so it must've been crushing. So in a weird way, we kinda owe DBE for jumpstarting the franchise again.
@@xxGamerX-cc2ho Yeah, no it isn't. It's flawed in areas and pointless within its the first, two seasons for poorly adapting movies (BoG & Resurrection: F), but still good overall.

I've heard people call Dragon Ball Evolution bad fanfiction before, but I disagree. That would be an insult to bad fanfiction, because at least bad fanfiction is written by people who actually like Dragon Ball.
Even if bad fanfiction is cringy as fuck. It at least has some semblance of the original source material. It was at least written by someone who has enough love for the series that they want to tell a story with those characters.
@@hannyboop I'm convinced the writer of My Immortal is actually the smartest troll in existence and has managed to fool everyone into thinking it's a honest fanfic and not a social experiment.

Fun fact: When Akira Toriyama offered advice for the script, the execs rebuked him, saying that 'They could do it better'. After the movie came out, Toriyama was so infuriated by it that he started writing Dragon Ball again. And thus, Super was born
*When Akira Toriyama offered advice for the script, the execs rebuked him, saying that 'They could do it better'* ^No wonder the film was utter crap. You don't ever tell the creator you can do it better, the film adaptation is your permission to even take the man's creation and try and adapt it for the big screen. Its no wonder movies with no care or thought put into them flounder and turn out to be a complete waste of time to begin with!
I also heard that when Justin Chatwin was casted as Goku, he read all of the original dragon ball and dragon ball z manga. And he was excited to see those elements be used in the movie. But, like all of us, he was disappointed that none of it was used. Atleast that’s what I heard from a comment in this comment section, is it really true?
"Yeah, but... you make it seem like death has no consequence." "It really doesn't. We're literally waiting to go back. Hell, this is Chiaotzu's second time." "Next time, I get a free sundae!"

Lol "arcs." The people who made this movie have admitted that it was a shameless cash-grab, I don't think most of them watched DBZ or even know what an arc is.
The absence of Krillin was an obvious clue to me that they literally had no idea what even is a Dragon Ball and were just using some kind of Mad Lib template to write it. Later I learned that the guy who apologized for writing the movie only wrote a very early draft, which was not great but a lot better and more interesting than what actually got filmed (I think it did have Krillin).
There is ONE joke in here that Jeff forgot: After Justin says the line "Have you tried looking under Master?" Bulma gives him a dirty look, and Justin goes "M-a-s-t" which got a genuine laugh from me upon first viewing
29:38 "Yamcha doesn't actually....do anything" Well there's the problem! The writers were skipping too far ahead and were looking at Dbz as source material
Well Dragonball still rarely ever did anything in dragonball. Most of the time he'd get his ass kicked early by whoever Goku was going to fight in the finals. He was always there though, so there is that.
You know what's worse than that the screenwriter had to apologise for writing Evolution? That his script was massively better! We've had it leaked online years ago, and while it's true that it's still not the release Dragonball deserved, it actually seemed like a bad adaptation of actual Dragonball, instead of...........this. Krilling was there in Kame house in one scene, the characters were more like themselves, etc. The only reason it got THIS bad is because the executives rewrote his bad script according to their own ideas and marketing 6 F***ing times!
I mean there is a bright side to to dbe, the actor for piccolo actually watched dragon ball, became a fan, and convinced everyone piccolo should be green, and even voiced zamasu in the dbs english dub. Also dbe was so bad, toriyama made bog and eventually dbs
Toriyama also gave advice of how to write the characters, but the executives refused and said “they can do it better.” Toriyama was so infuriated, that he starts to write dragon ball again. That’s right, DBE was so bad that it made Toriyama yeet out of retirement.
@@RandomPerson-cm2wg To be fair, Toriyama is a pretty bad writer himself and if the makers of DBE just needed someone to explain the characters to them, they could have grabbed any nerd off the streets of Brazil to do so.
Stefan I’d say that he’s a decent writer, his stories are written well enough to enjoy. Dragonball even began as a gag manga anyways. But DBE is just plain bad.
I'm so glad that James Marsters got to officially be in the DB universe by voicing Zamasu in the English dub. He loves Dragon Ball and he tried so hard to at least make Piccolo accurate in this pile of shit disguised as a movie.
That is pretty cool, that makes me think of when the actress who was live action Princess Yue in a trash adaption of another beloved series got to voice Asami.
Holy shit, Dresden voices Zamasu? I actually didn't pick up on that, but looking back on it it's obvious. (James Marsters reads the Dresden Files audiobooks)
I think the people who make this movie knew it, and made Goku a lot like adolescent gohan and Chichi more like Videl, even the clothes color. If they wanted a movie with teens and stuff, teen gohan becoming a superhero was there all along waiting to be adapted
Exactly. Dragonball is a LOT like Power Rangers! That's why they treated the characters of Great Saiyaman & the Ginyu Force with such respect! Why doesn't anyone see that?
The screenwriter actually apologized. Apparently he didn't even bother to google DBZ and find out it's actually popular. He thought it was dumb and put minimal effort in for a paycheck.
@@clearspira At least according to Wikipedia it's 16th overall in the list of top-grossing media at $25 billion. That puts it above LotR, the Simpsons, Star Trek....
If the screenwriter apologized, it's also possible the bad script was the producer's fault. Like MB said in the end of the video, the higher ups looking at research and focus testing could have forced some changes. All I'm saying is it takes more than one person to make a movie this bad.
@@GrandArchPriestOfTheAlgorithm but it's also a shotty adaption of that it combines the pilaf and piccolo arc is some weird stupid mishmash and then it just throws in it's own bullshit like changing goku's character to be some typical rebellious teenager who goes to high school and already knows what namekians are and both krillin and tien two major characters from the original dragon ball are completely absent from the movie yeah great adaption of dragon ball
The saddest thing is that DBZ did a better version of the "superhero kid goes to school and gets the girl while teaching his bullies a lesson" plot when Gohan went to high school. Please nobody make a live action Super Saiaman movie. It'll get butchered like this
I can actually see a live-action Super Sajyaman movie doing great. It probably is way easier than trying to do the plot of DB or DBZ. Especially if you ignore 90% of it and the 10% that are left, are the names of the main characters xD The teenage romance highschool plot they went for, is a given for a Sajyaman movie, hence he is a teenager (if we are not taking the adult Gohan who is already married). Okay, they have to write around the Buu arc ... but maybe it is set in an alternative timeline, where Buu does not awaken and there is no abrupt ending of the tournament (for 80% of the main cast). I'd actually like to see that. Vegeta fighting against Goku in the tournament, without he going full rampage and killing hundreds °L° Even though I'm not sure, if a live-action adaptation would be the best for that ... But seriously, if done right, it could be great ... and at least it would be better than DBE, which is not hard xD
yeah he got crushed to death by Goku having gone Giant Ape. meanwhile Goku doesn't realize he was the Monster his grandpa warned him about till he was an adult. and we don't even get to see it happen. it's something Goku mentions off hand when Puar mentions there was full moon out. granted had Goku not looked at the full moon in that moment in that part... yeah they would be dead.
Yeah seriously. This movie had a chance to be somewhat good if angsty goku's spider sense tingled, he left the party, arrived when Piccolo got there and blacks out to find his house destroyed and Gohan dying. He thinks Piccolo is to blame and it isn't until the end he finds out he's Oozaru and he destroyed the house and killed his grandpa. Would drive home the bullshit moral "have faith in who you are" message better too.
I mean the writers didn't fucking care, they would have butchered Frieza either way. They probably would've said "Hey, turns out there's a dude Piccolo worked for and that dude was called Frieza so...fuck it, we're going to fight Frieza now."
The Grey Goblin we would have found out that Piccolo actually worked for Raditz who actually worked for Vegeta who actually worked for Frieza. Never mind that Vegeta, Raditz, and Goku are the same race. Also, Frieza works for Cell, and the Red Ribbon Army has been pulling the strings the whole time
@@jakethornton4125 Seeing how this movie handled Mai, I think that Raditz and Nappa would have been either not there at all or just been goons with Vegeta and/or Frieza the big bad
@@thegreygoblin5165 Then we learn that it's actually Pilaf who send Mai to work for King Piccolo so he could find out the truth about his whole organisation. dragonball in the west may be beloved for its action but in japan the reason the manga you know the story without any animation no color and no acting and very little action since the anime adds a lot more fighting than originally was in the story since fighting in manga form is not fun and should not take too long to stall from the plot of the story, but the reason it sold is because its a simple hero's journey and then became a mans journey into adulthood and his sons hero journey ..thats really dragonball in a nutshell..its luke skwalker in star wars just without much development cause goku from right away is set in his ways and the author says hes right to be the way he is he doesn't need to change others can change around him cause he has figured it all out already ... its thats simple if you want to break it down...we see a hero grow up and learn and we learn and grow with them...thats why people like it..you see this main character grow and form bonds and create lifetime heroes out of enemies changing villains..its really cool..they aren't temporary truces for one arc or issue like in western comics and then a unexpected betrayl no they change for good which is cool...

Whats crazy is that Justin took his role very seriously compared to the other actors. He read the manga, watched the anime, etc. Could only do so much with a bad script.
@@tahjkuemmerle Uhm you don't need gel... My hair can spike up without gel for being so thick... And that's not even enough of what makes someone look like Goku... I feel like there's a world where Justin could have gotten some ok roles in acting, maybe not becoming an A Tier actor but something, and this movie killed all that instantly
You know, I'd like to believe Bulma's " Maybe I like bad men" comment was a nod to Vegeta wearing that pink "Badman" shirt in the Trunks arc... never mind, definitely not with this script. It was more likely a complete coincidence while they just went with a "women like the bad guys" trope.
Pfff yeah. Seeing how much thought they put into this movie, somehow I highly doubt they were looking that far down the line. Here's the thing though Yamcha is one of the last characters you'd call a bad boy. He may have been introduced that way, but put a pretty girl anywhere near him and he's all weak knees and nosebleeds. Like if you're going to drop millions on making a live action dragonball movie you would think it wouldn't be a big ask for the director to at least crack open the book.
Trying to give this movie credit in any way aside from the actors and original screenwriter is tantamount to eating poison and expecting less than a tummy ache.
goku is a icon..to call justin goku when he is the opposite in most ways is disrespectful ..they literally wrote a angsty spiderman clone without what we like about spiderman and then call him goku and put him in the suit and make him a monkey
I was already so disappointed in this movie that I didn’t think I could be anymore disappointed. Now I realize that the volcano was probably supposed to be Fire Mountain, the hench girl was supposed to by Mai, and learn that they were trying to pander for a trilogy (not just a sequel) and I feel more dead on the inside than the virus could accomplish right now.
Imagine how shitty the second film would of been with Raditz, Napa, and Vegetta. And a third film with Frieza. Basically, Piccolo changing sides because he was Frieza's slave once Vegetta came to Earth...
If you think the volcano being Fire Mountain was bad, I think the weird goofy monsters Piccolo created to fight there were supposed to be King Piccolo's children.
I can't even imagine how that would have gone, like Geoff said they basically made it impossible to do the Saiyan invasion or the war on Namek. I guess they could have just had a villain who says he's Vegeta in the second one, and a villain who says he's Frieza in the third, to quote Jontron the sky's the limit when you don't give a shit.
When I was a little kid, one of my dad and I's main methods of bonding was watching Dragonball together. We went on a father-daughter date to see this movie in THEATERS. My dad was an accountant and when the shop was still relatively new, he did the books for Travelling Man owner Nabil! My mam liked dragons and while we agreed their Shenron was jus plain bad (an Eastern Dragon with a Western Dragon's head... why DOES that one fly under the radar so much!?) he also agreed the film was pretty bad and his main knowledge of the franchise could pretty much be summed up as "his client sold the Manga that his son collected"! You know what's the worst part? If they wanted to build a cheesy movie with high school teenagers, super heroes and love affairs based on Dragon Ball, if they had based the story on Gohan, Videl and the Great Saiyaman the movie wouldn't be as bad as it was! And the Power Rangers parts would be bearable!
Oh no, they had it much easier than that. GT. At that point you have Gohan, Videl and Uub as superhereos each with their own dorky costume. We can take solace in one thing though: Toriyama got so pissed about what they did to his series that he came out of a retirement to make more actual Dragon Ball. Love Super or hate it, DBE is directly responsible for its existence.

The thing of it is, Superman and Spiderman received their powers/were born powerful without any training needed. While Goku was also born with Saiyan hi levels of ki and strength, it wasn't enough to beat a premier human martial artist if he left it as is. Goku TRAINED to be the powerhouse he is. Sure, it's FUN for him because he loves fighting and is the typical Saiyan in that sense, but he still got to be the strongest being in the universe because he pro-actively trains and picks fights with strong people. If someone is weak, he's really not interested in getting involved beyond swatting them out of the way.
I know this is like from really long ago, but i think that it is mentioned that Goku had actually low levels of ki and strength when being analyzed in his incubation pod when he was still a kid, so i guess he trained more than people think he did.

What they did with Yamcha is insulting. They couldn't even have him be scared of girls :( And Yamcha's presence in the manga had an importance. He was the first to discover that Goku's weakness was his tail. It helped them return Goku to normal after he went Oozaru in Pilaf's castle.
He was also Goku's first oponent to become a direct rival! The other villains of the story that fought Goku did not became rivals with Goku, they either sided with him out of fear (like Oolong) or actively tried to defeat him (like Pilaf). But Yamcha was the first one to fight him and try to surpass him not as an enemy but as a friend. He may have gone soft towards the end of Dragon Ball and became the running joke of being unable to defeat a Saibanman, but he is still way stronger and skilled than any average martial artist in the world of Dragon Ball, he gets a minor role in the fights, but he is still more capable than the average human.
Speaking of cutting off Goku's tail, this adaptation also completely left out Puar, who was Yamcha's sidekick and the one who actually did the tail-cutting.
@@koncentra5767 Well they also left out Pilaf which is the actually true criminal part of the movie. If they wanted to actually do a franchise, why start with King Piccolo who was the biggest threat in the original Dragon Ball? I think a live action Dragon Ball movie series or TV show could really work. Not DBZ, but classic Dragon Ball. Hire a talented martial artist kid, don't try to copy the anime hair and just give him generaly wild hair, lean into the feral mountain boy vibes and his endearing loveable naivety and ignorance and love of fighting. Make him just as strong as in the anime and just as excitable. Make him asexual and motivated by adventure and fighting and let the secondary characters motivate the plot. It could work. Lean into making Goku loveable. Let us explore the wacky and wild world of DB along with him! He's the perfect window character like Harry Potter to discover capsules and dog people and floating cars and insane cities! Towers full of bad guys and color coded armies! It's all new to us, and it's all new to Goku! It WORKS! DO THAT! Hire the choreographers from Into the Badlands and a talented and versatile composer like Bear McCreary, and a few good directors like the crew that made Daredevil and you'll have an amazing show! I think it could be better than Avatar as a live action anime. (Avatar is anime. Fight me.) I think focusing on martial arts and fun world building and less on massive energy beams and mountain destroying punches will work better. Bending works better as animation, a lot of Anime is animated because it works best that way... but Dragon Ball could really work. I honestly believe it. P.S. After seeing a video of Yidyut Jamwal, I'd love to see him portray Nam in live action. I liked Nam a lot and I think the Tournament arc could be a ton of fun in live action! Focusing on all the fun characters and I think it would be fun to have someone like Dave Bautista or Terry Crews play Bacterian for fun. With a ton of makeup and prosthetics like Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder lol those kinds of cameos are always my favorite!
Ben Ramsey apologized for the film, writing: "To have something with my name on it as the writer be so globally reviled is gut-wrenching. To receive hate mail from all over the world is heartbreaking. I went into the project chasing after a big payday, not as a fan of the franchise but as a businessman taking on an assignment. I have learned that when you go into a creative endeavour without passion you come out with sub-optimal results, and sometimes flat out garbage. So I'm not blaming anyone for Dragonball [Evolution] but myself."
The funny thing is that he didn't, later retracted the apology blaming literally everyone else, and tried to promote his more recent work in the same statement. I'm pretty confident that he only ever apologized in a failed attempt to save his career, and his revision of the apology was another attempt at the same - seemingly having realized that hollywood favours the 'stupid but successful' over smart self-aware failures. He essentially said that his script was great and it was everyone else's fault that the film ended up like this - which it partially is, given how badly this all reeks of executives - and even said Disney should try remaking it with his original script. You know, the one that he wrote for cash with virtually no knowledge of the series and which Toriyama both read and thought was shit.
Akira Toriyama - "At the time of the Hollywood movie, the live-action Dragon Ball, the script had too little of a grasp on the world and its characteristics, and on top of that, it had a conventional content that I couldn't find interesting, so I cautioned them, and suggested changes; but in spite of that, they seemed to have a strange confidence, and didn't really listen to me. What came out in the end was a movie I couldn't really call a Dragon Ball that lived up to my expectations."
. its nice to see someone parody some of the over reactions to this film while still saying yeah its actually worse than you think or worse than the nerds overeacting to it claim cause of the production alone like studio medling writing acting stunt work and editing not even counting how it totally disrespects the source material on purpose while trying to do something new and failing at it trying to make that Spiderman money and copy it just using goku cause fox sucks ....cause unlike most mother's basement actually knows what hes talking about..hes not just venting for views taking about a series he doesn't know about he actually cares about dragonball clearly with his knowledge unlike most reviewers hes not just reviewing something popular and funny he doesn't care about for views he can review anything anime related and get views... he chose this cause he wanted to period and he broke it down very well why it fails as a movie as a adaptation and just as a story
I mean... It doesnt make it IMPOSSIBLE it would just make it more difficult to do it in a good way. Knowing this movie though it would have just been handwaved something stupid like piccolo finding baby goku and baby napping him mid trip, or give it a couple degrees of separation and just say king piccolo had a different Oozaru and establish that there are multiple ones. Heck, that would even foreshadow Vegita turning into one during said re-written sayan arc.
And then percy Jackson... where they remove the entire thing about kronos using Luke as a temporary host, and defeat kronos, the main villain of the series, during the movie based on the second book...
"Just watch the way he bad-touches the camera with his eyes while imagining her mouth f**king a strawberry in a field full of flowers." That sentence...that sentence is AMAZING.
13:06 This moment makes me so legitimately angry and this is why I hate the movie so much... the fact that Goku straight up ditched his own adopted Grandpa to chase after some bland piece of ass is one of the biggest deviations of his character. In the manga and anime, he was really faithful towards his Grandfather that if this character trait existed, he would've stayed with his Grandfather's side (He might've been killed too and had the Dragon Ball taken, but that's really besides the point....) It's probably even worse that they just used the Dragon Balls with the knowledge to bring anyone back to life, so to just revive one person instead of everyone killed by Piccolo is pretty much an asshole move.
They needed to kill of Gohan without making Goku his murderer so they had to create a situation where he would be out of the house -- they went with "he's a high-schooler so, hormones, I guess" I guess... Of course they could've just started after Gohan's death, not made Goku a high-schooler or engaged in any kind of education (since he never was in the manga) and just have an alternate reality kinda thing where his grandfather died and Bulma didn't come to run him over a few days/weeks afterward and instead only met him a few years after Gohan's death with Goku having had to live alone for the that time... Or I dunno, just anything that wasn't so majestically not-Dragon-Ball. The question of "were they doing it on purpose" when referencing how everything is backward is so hard to answer because on the one hand it doesn't look like it as I think it would be more obvious whereas this just seems incidental but on the other hand... there is not a single thing that is not wrong with the story when compared to the source. Adapting is fine, changing is fine, even completely changing the story as long as some kernel of the original is left in there but... fuck me, this is disastrous. Soulless is about as close to being a compliment as possible; a vacuum of purpose, money and talent is way closer to the truth.
If I remember correctly, in the anime the one who came with the idea of reviving EVERYONE killed by piccolo and not only their friends was Yamcha. He was the most considerate one on that situation.
Fun fact: James Marsters, who played King Piccolo in this movie, actually went on to voice another Dragon Ball villain, this time in Dragon Ball Super, where he voiced the genocidal Kaioshin of Universe 10, Zamasu!!
@thesadistgod its not complete trash, but it isn't very good either. The concept behind it is pretty good, the dark goku trope was played out already by like 3 other characters, but this was the only one that felt like it could actually be a real version of the dark goku character. The villian motives were decent and the main cast had a decent amount of good dialog aswrll throughout the arc, the main problem though is that it's dragon ball super, and in dragon ball super, nothing ever gets fleshed out past the initial concept due to the fact that toriyama literally only gave the anime team basic plot points on what should happen in each arc, so instead of having well though out story arcs, that evolved the characters and made lasting effects on the plot, we got a bunch of hollow story beats that didnt have a chance to gain any kind of depth, all of which were mostly unconnected, and were glued together with weird filler content that had 0 real impact on the story or characters
The only hope for dragon ball right now is the upcoming anime dragon ball diama, I'm hoping that since it seems to be a standalone project that has heavy involvement from toriyama, it can be more similar to how the movies are, and have real story telling with more deep themes and plot points, obviously since it's still just a continuation of dbs, it can't be that much of a step up in quality since the dbs anime basically gutted any chance of dragon ball being a deep and overarching story, but I hope that diama can at least function as a extremely good standalone story, and it forgets about all of the flawed plot points dbs has barried itself 6 feet underneath in

Justin Chadwin actually sat down and read ALL of DB and DBZ in preparation for the role and was sad when the film ended using none of it which is sad because Toriyama is actually a big fan of western sci-fi movies like The Terminator and Star Wars so it must've been crushing.

im pretty sure the same appreciation exists without the movie
dragonball in the west may be beloved for its action but in japan the reason the manga you know the story without any animation no color and no acting and very little action since the anime adds a lot more fighting than originally was in the story since fighting in manga form is not fun and should not take too long to stall from the plot of the story, but the reason it sold is because its a simple hero's journey and then became a mans journey into adulthood and his sons hero journey ..thats really dragonball in a nutshell..its luke skwalker in star wars just without much development cause goku from right away is set in his ways and the author says hes right to be the way he is he doesn't need to change others can change around him cause he has figured it all out already ... its thats simple if you want to break it down...we see a hero grow up and learn and we learn and grow with them...thats why people like it..you see this main character grow and form bonds and create lifetime heroes out of enemies changing villains..its really cool..they aren't temporary truces for one arc or issue like in western comics and then a unexpected betrayl no they change for good which is cool...

Whats crazy is that Justin took his role very seriously compared to the other actors. He read the manga, watched the anime, etc. Could only do so much with a bad script.

Afterall Goku is anime character but you gotta just be artistically clever to transform that into real life... That doesn't mean his hair gotta be as big as the anime 😑
Yeah I doubt they would’ve ever done a subtle yet smart reference like that
Trying to give this movie credit in any way aside from the actors and original screenwriter is tantamount to eating poison and expecting less than a tummy ache.
I might buy it if Yamcha wore a pink shirt when he and Bulma hooked up.
I like how Mother's Basement doesn't even refer to Justin as Goku.
If he did, it would be a massive disrespect to Goku and he knows it.
goku is a icon..to call justin goku when he is the opposite in most ways is disrespectful ..they literally wrote a angsty spiderman clone without what we like about spiderman and then call him goku and put him in the suit and make him a monkey
He’s not Goku. He’s Ukog.
He does actually slip up a few times
We all like that
I was already so disappointed in this movie that I didn’t think I could be anymore disappointed. Now I realize that the volcano was probably supposed to be Fire Mountain, the hench girl was supposed to by Mai, and learn that they were trying to pander for a trilogy (not just a sequel) and I feel more dead on the inside than the virus could accomplish right now.
Glad I could help!
I guess they could have just had a villain who says he's Vegeta in the second one, and a villain who says he's Frieza in the third, to quote Jontron the sky's the limit when you don't give a shit.
they were definitely trying for a franchise.

Oh no, they had it much easier than that. GT. At that point you have Gohan, Videl and Uub as superhereos each with their own dorky costume. Gohan and Videl are in college, Goten is either in late high school or early college and exploring dating. They could have had their super hero high school drama on a silver platter.

@@thenightguy8328 Though it's ''non-canon'', Broly: The Legendary Super-Saiyan [at least in the English dub, no idea about the original because I'm not Japanese] states that Goku is born with a power level of... two. Goku: *hires a hitman to kill him so he can fight against someone who has a move that he can’t see*
What they did with Yamcha is insulting. They couldn't even have him be scared of girls :(
And Yamcha's presence in the manga had an importance.
Just start slow with someone like Pilaf, reimagined if he has to be, keep the stakes low, develop the main 4 characters, introduce Chi Chi but don't make her a part of the main cast yet and make the main conceit be tracking down the Dragon Ba-------
I am literally just describing the first few arcs of the manga/anime at this point... what was even the point of it all?
A dragon ball pixar style 3d movie would be priceless
Speaking of the tail, there are a select few frames during the “fight” between Gohan and Goku that, blink and you miss it, you will see Goku has his tail. That means they attempted to have Goku with the tail early on and took it out during the production of the movie.

"Yamcha doesn't do anything"
Oh so he hasn't really changed
hey, they actually adapted one thing corrrectly!
Changed horribly. He did A LOT in Dragon Ball before Z.
Well, at least there was a lesson learned. I hope he didn't get death threats or anything.
I didn't know there was a straight up wrong way to spend quarantine time, but I guess such a thing has been found
Akira Toriyama - "At the time of the Hollywood movie, the live-action Dragon Ball, the script had too little of a grasp on the world and its characteristics, and on top of that, it had a conventional content that I couldn't find interesting, so I cautioned them, and suggested changes; but in spite of that, they seemed to have a strange confidence, and didn't really listen to me. What came out in the end was a movie I couldn't really call a Dragon Ball that lived up to my expectations."

Jeff has been powering up a spirit bomb to destroy this movie the entire time.
. its nice to see someone parody some of the over reactions to this film while still saying yeah its actually worse than you think or worse than the nerds overeacting to it claim cause of the production alone like studio medling writing acting stunt work and editing not even counting how it totally disrespects the source material on purpose while trying to do something new and failing at it trying to make that Spiderman money and copy it just using goku cause fox sucks ....cause unlike most mother's basement actually knows what hes talking about..hes not just venting for views taking about a series he doesn't know about he actually cares about dragonball clearly with his knowledge unlike most reviewers hes not just reviewing something popular and funny he doesn't care about for views he can review anything anime related and get views... he chose this cause he wanted to period and he broke it down very well why it fails as a movie as a adaptation and just as a story
It’s legendary (it sucks)
It is never too late to point out how shitty Dragon Ball Evolution is, both as a movie and as an adaptation of Dragon Ball.
Jeff: This movie makes it functionally impossible...to adapt the Saiyan or Freeza saga
Eragon characters : First time ?
thats ok movies 3 5 and 6 already do that so...but thats ok
oh no why did you remind me of that horrible Eragon movie
I somehow sat through it but Blonde Arya made me want to walk out
@@Nisi1 And now I'm reminded of it too. Thanks.

TH-cam Cares TM
@@vetreas366 technically Roshi did homeschool him and Krillen a bit during their training for the 21st WMT. Still only about Amish level though.
If I remember correctly, in the anime the one who came with the idea of reviving EVERYONE killed by piccolo and not only their friends was Yamcha. He was the most considerate one on that situation.

@@Dark.Shingo always better than this
Fun fact: James Marsters, who played King Piccolo in this movie, actually went on to voice another Dragon Ball villain, this time in Dragon Ball Super, where he voiced the genocidal Kaioshin of Universe 10, Zamasu!!
And that arc is terrible! That poor man lol! His voice acting is excellent at least.
@@alittlebirdi come on. Maybe you’re being a bit harsh.

How is no more Dragonball, particularly Akira Toriyama Dragonball, a good thing? This would be the alternative you suggest after all.
Did you not enjoy Super? If we wana be real, DBZ was definitely better, but Super has been enjoyable and a treat to me so far. I have no complaints except I wish they kept the show at the DBZ level of violence and blood, but I understand why they toned that down I guess.

Dragon ball Evolution is like two big middle fingers to it's source materials.
Thank you for roasting it
I wonder if Akira looks back on this film & shudders at the fact he was an executive producer.
Shyamalan's The Last Airbender though is like two middle fingers on the source material while he shits on it.
@@XavierScratch1987 he has a huge distaste for it its why he is back he was mad at what happened to his series
@@DivineeTray I would be too if I found out this happened to it
@@serge263 I'd argue that DBE is worse than TLA movie, in TLA at least characters and power sets are closer to the actual show, DBE "Goku" is literally the opposite of Goku (teenager, horny, doesn't want to go on his journey to fit that overused "hero's journey trope" overall the most generic protagonist you can make) and the whole story is turned into the most generic Kung Fu movie possible.
I have a theory this entire movie was a fever dream of Gohan when he was taken by Piccolo to train, which is why everything is messed up.
Pickle dad tho
Or after he ate the fruit in Garlic Junior's lair
@@CORBYEETS,
Pickle Dad?... I believe the correct term is "THE BIG GREEN".
So much of this movie is weirdly accurate to the source material while totally butchering it at the same time that I choose to believe it’s an in-universe movie made by someone who only knew the broad strokes of Goku’s life
"Kudos to the cast and filming crews" (and no mention of writers and the director) from Akira Toriyama himself says it all, seriously.
Dragon Ball evolution....
I refuse to acknowledge that it ever existed outside of absolute necessity
Dragon ball what?
Me too 😂
Yeah this looks terrible and embarrassing.
My daughter has asked to watch this movie a few times (because of the dragonball name attached to it).
She continues to wonder why I say this film doesn't actually exist.
It is because of "dragon ball evolution" that Akira Toriyama made "dragon ball z battle of gods", out of spite.
It's kinda sad that even the creator of this dumpster fire admitted that this was a cash grab and not an attempt to make a live action movie. 😔😔
You're talking about the screenwriter. He didn't even write the final version of the film, he sent in many drafts each less faithful to the source material than the last as they kept getting rejected. Apparently many modifications were made even to the final script he gave them.
@Meem Ain Not the screenwriter, he likely communicated with the director or even a manager.
I’ve never liked Dragonball, but I did watch the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, so I know how you guys feel.
Hey I liked both so just imagine that heartbreak...
Just kidding! When I heard Avatar was being adapted by Shyamalan all hope died within me from that point onward and backward, like a ripple through my personal timeline and protected me from ever getting my hopes up for either the TLA or DB adaptations so I'm all good!
I mean... my soul's a vacuum of hope and expectations but I feel life would've eventually done that to me anyway so ALL GOOD!!!
@@vetreas366 maybe we all misunderstood. Maybe they adapted the fire nation's theatre play of the avatar story and we just thought they were going for the real deal
@Aiko 244 damn...
All these years after watching this I only now realize Roshi, Bulma, Yamcha and Mai were in it....
Ha. Yeah the only one that you could argue that even remotely looks like their character is "Mai", and that's only after you stretch your imagination like her skinsuit. Roshi's look is acceptable, but only because it seemed like they actually put some thought into who should play him. A pox on the other two though. If they didn't waste money on giving "Yamcha's" bleached tips maybe they could've used it to make Bulma's hair bluer than one lock.
Remember, the actor for King Piccolo (James Marsters) went on to be the English voice for Zamasu. Talk about a redemption story.
Didn't know that, That's awesome
They likely discovered that a talented actor was a fan of the original material and they figured to give him a chance.
Michael M James Marsters actually became a fan while preparing for Evolution, which only made him angry at the movie being the travesty that it is. Funimation probably noticed this & gave Marsters a chance to do right by the series he grew to love.
Neoxon Speaking of which. I’d like to hear the phone call between him and Funimation.
Which is a worse crime against cinemanity? Dragonball: Evolution or M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender?
I wish I could pick both
At least the last air bender try to be fateful to its Source material dragon ball Evolution just dose what ever the fuck it wants and only use the title and the characters
yes
Dragonball: Evolution
Evolution...no doubt. I bet it’s in the same league as super mario movie 😂
Did they actively TRY to make every character into literally the exact opposite of what they actually are? Because I don't know how else it's even possible to be THAT off-base. They didn't just adapt the characters, they turned them into completely, fundamentally different people
