    This really was a very strong song contest. Wonderful Severine really sold her song and it has become a classic. However I think the Italian song was a great ballad and so well sung by Massimo Ranieri and I think it deserved better than 5th place. Tonicha, Karina, Katja Ebstein, Clodagh all gave great performances. The Belgian couple did well to learn their song at short notice when Nicol of Hugo & Nicol fell ill with jaundice. It was such a pity sound problems spoiled the beginning of the Dutch song which was very beautiful, as was the Swiss song with delightful Peter , Sue & Marc. All in all a high quality evening.

    People should realise how big an event this was for the Irish broadcaster RTE - in 1971 they were approaching 10 years old, and were still a limited company. TV on RTE was only on air for 6 hours each evening. Money was limited. Hosting the Eurovision showed that little RTE could host an international event.

    Useless irrelevant fact...during the postcard for Ireland (around 48:15) you'll see a clip of a Boeing 747, following a small, propellor aircraft. Aer Lingus took delivery of its first 747 in 1971. The aircraft it's following is actually a replica of its first ever aircraft - a Dh 84 Dragon from 1936.

    I cannot believe that it was 50 years ago, last month, that Monaco won the contest in '71. Some of the songs presented in this contest were really catchy. And..... Is it just my eyes deceiving me or has Luxembourg decided to give only 1 point to (almost) every song.

    A rather lackluster year, not many evergreens, and the Gaiety Theatre was just too small and it really came out that way on screen. The voting system was bad too, but at least it was used as the backbone for the voting system that would be introduced in 1975. My faves are Katja Ebstein, the Family Four and Peter, Sue & Marc.

    RTE was a black and white transmission station📺 at the time, they were doing behind the scenes colour 🌈experimentation, but did they get external help with cameras and satellites etc? 🤔

    • @richardyoung1053
      @richardyoung1053 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect they may have received some outside help from the likes of the BBC. The colour transmission of the 1968 contest from London had set the bar so I suspect they were keen to impress. In later years they hosted the contest on a number of consecutive occasions (in the case of the 1993 contest in quite a remote location) so had built up quite a comprehensive bank of technical expertise (on screen digital scoreboards, satellite video feeds for voting etc) so we're able to share that guidance and knowledge with the BBC when the UK hosted again in 1998.

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they did. The BBC loaned RTE colour cameras and a colour outside broadcast unit. BBC and RTE thankfully used the same 625 line colour system. BBC however on their feed made sure they got extra credit during their end credits.

      Also there was no satellites used back in 1971. It was all done with microwave links and cable. Eurovision was linked to Britain and Ireland by undersea cables, and microwave links. Satellite would not be the norm until a decade later.
