I have a question scotty. I have a 2004 altezza here in japan. I changed the oil pressure sensor since it was inop and the oil along with the filter since it was about due. I put in 10W30 because i listened to a "mechanic". Now the oil pressure sits low after car warms up but when i get up to a little over 2000rpms it shoots up to almost max. I believe i have to use 5W20 or 5W30. What do i do since i already have 10W30 in it? Do i have to do kind of flush?
Guessing those are the same piston and rings that Chevy decided to use later on their 2010-2013 SUV engines that had oil consumption problems. They must had gotten them for cheap and built the engines around them. To the 2012 Chevy Equinox owner. Check your intake solenoids (if same engine, it is about $50 each and you need 2 of them, easy job - left side of engine, near injectors). Had the same issue with my 2011 equinox a few years ago. In my case it gave me code for throttle body, so had to dig around forums for solutions and found intake solenoids do that as well.
A couple of years ago a friend of mine got an estimate for about $3000 to fix this problem at the local Toyota dealer. I told him about the recall, or TSB, on this problem and he got the dealer to do it for about $600. Great video, Scotty. It's going to help a lot of people.
There was a " warranty extension " on the 2AZ-FE engines. My 2003 Camry, 2.4 L, 2AZ-FE, got new piston rings rebuilt in 2009. My Uncle & Aunt went to multiple dealerships before he found a dealership that would do the rebuild. You gotta research the web for the right words to tell the dealership service advisor. Peace! Maybe he is the supreme automotive DIYer: 1. Doesn't have a shop in the true sense of the word; 2. Has his garage so full of tools he can't park inside anymore; 3. Has a lot of sets of 2 identical tools, of which one was lost in the mess, and the other one was bought because he couldn't find the first one; 4. Has expensive diagnostic tools but we've never seen him working on a lathe (because having a lathe turns you into a mechanic).
Got a 2008 Toyota Rav4 with this 2AZ-FE engine, they changed the Piston and the Rings completly free with the remanufactured parts in 2016 for free! Perfect vehicle now!

Scotty, the mileage limit is 150,000. I have a 2010 Scion xB with that engine and it started burning oil at about 135,000. I didn't know about the problem but learned about it by doing a little online research. I brought it to a Toyota dealer when it had 145,000, they did the test and it burnt over a quart of oil in a 1000 miles. So, they did the right thing and rebuilt the engine. I told a neighbor about it who had the same problem, he brought his in and they said "sorry." He had 160,000 miles and they wouldn't fix it. Like you said, that's not right.
Toyota rebuilt the top end on my 07 Rav4 free of charge & supplied me with a hand control equipped rental for nothing! That was 50k miles ago. Still towing & going!
Good. Maybe, the mechanic there did the required repair. My 07Rav4 was treated the same but only run better for 6 months. It came back to that worst consumption of oil. I assumed that they did not repair my RAV4 completely.

My ‘09 matrix had the “oil consumption test” completed at 120,000 miles. I was putting 4 qts of oil in the car every 2k miles or so. When the dealer ran the test, after 2k miles, the car magically didn’t consume oil through that period. After they declared it not an issue though, the engine went back to consuming oil and I ultimately had to sell the car before I really wanted to.
One of the dark day's in Toyota's history. The production of this engine was near the time of the Great Recession, so I think automakers were cutting-corners/cheaping out like crazy. But they learned their lesson and came back strong, and other automakers have made far more serious mistakes too, so....... My 2005 Sienna, with the 3.3 interference engine, is still running like a Rocky Balboa!
@@spenserchalkley7013 I have a 2013 Camry with a 4 cylinder, it consumes no oil, but it did develop transmission shudder at 40,000 miles. Toyota had to replace the torque converter free of charge.

@@truthbetold8610 My wife's went 10 years and 180K miles without any engine problems. Had the alternator rebuilt at 120K I think and that was the only repair its ever had. Got totaled when somebody t-boned her, there was too much structural damage to repair but the engine was still running perfectly. You'd never guess it was a 4-cylinder, it runs smooth as a V6.

My 2007 Camry had those pistons/rings. At 172,000 miles the car failed the oil use test. Toyota replaced piston/rings. (Was not advised to replace rear main seal - blew at 900+ miles post piston/ring r&r.) The car now has 298,000+ miles and still operating good. I ride with a tight rear seal most of the time though.

My father purchased a 1970 Vega station wagon, it didn't even take that long for the pistons and rings to wear out the aluminum cylinders, the mechanic pulled the cyl. head and could rock the pistons back and forth with his fingers, and of course the dealer did nothing.
Agree but not the same years for this oil consumption problem. I think that 2002 to 2006 faced stripped head bolt. 2007 to 2009 (or to 2011 for specific model) faced oil consumption issue.
1zz-fe have this too. Changed pistonrings and alot of other stuff while having my engine apart in early 2019 while being between jobs. Learned alot in the process :) It still runs 15000 km later with no oil burning. 2001 Avensis (euro model)
Back in the days you're referring to I had a friend with a Vega and it had the Vega "problem". Driving home from work one afternoon he heard on the radio that Chevrolet would fix any Vega so long as the mileage wasn't over 50,000. Excited he called the local Chevrolet dealership and sure enough they told him it was true. He then explained that the mileage right now in his driveway was 49999.7 and that their dealership was about a half mile away which would put the mileage about 2/10 over 50K. They insisted that the mileage be no higher than 50K to get the repair. When he weighed the cost of a flatbed haul to the dealership he decided since the car was falling apart and it had rot too that it wasn't worth it. I always thought that was kind of sad.
@@sansfreedom1629 I think it's a yarn. A half-mile tow doesn't cost that much. I had a Vega once. They were bad, but they wouldn't have "rot" (whatever that is) at 50,000 miles. A lot of guy customized them, just like people later did the with Chevy Cav. It's called eternal recurrence.
Only the 2AZ-FE engine made in USA has oil burning issue. The engine made in Thailand has no issue of oil burning issue even though it has clocked more than 300,000 km.
I have a 2009 Camry with this engine and it burns around 1 Liter every 2000km (engine has 400,000km / 250,000 miles on it ) I change the oil and filter around 7,000km, its a great car, it keeps going and going and going....................... I have a 2010 Scion tC which has this dreaded oil burning issue. I took it to Toyota 2 different times. The first time they overfilled my engine on purpose so they wouldn’t have to do the repair for free. The second time, I watched them fill it up and checked the dipstick before they sealed off the engine. Lo and behold, it was about half a quart higher than normal. I had them drain it out and refill it to the correct level. After the testing the second time, they supposedly did the fix but my car still burns a quart of oil ever 900~ miles or so. I still even have photos and documentation of the event
My XB had that problem and it took several tests and visits to two different dealerships to finally get it fixed up at only the cost of the fuel surcharge for the rental. Now it runs like a dream and I love it
Here's the deal. My old 2010 Scion xB had the same engine. They extended the warranty to 10 yr 150k miles. Mine started burning oil about a quart every 1k miles when I got to around 130k miles. I tried to get them to rebuild twice, but they said it has to be burning 2 quarts every 1k miles before they would do anything under warranty. I eventually sold it.
We have toyota from 1975 corolla ke 20 1.2, BJ40 3.4diesel 1981 exelente never die! Hilux 2.4D 1983, supra 3.0 1989, land cruiser 4.2TD 1998 all are great engines
It wasn’t a design flaw in the engine on the part of the rings wearing out. It was a design flaw of too high piston temps heating up the engine oil on the cylinder bore, on the piston shirts, and around the oil ring. The higher temp burns lower quality oil and causes carbon buildup around the oil ring preventing it from working properly. If you use a good quality full synthetic oil from new or almost new then there’s no problem. Also these engine have NO tolerance for going a bit overdue for the service. Service it every 5000 miles max with good oil and no problems.
RTM! 0w20 or 0w40 in urban only and mixed driving mode, never use 5w30 unless you drive only long distance ! That's the core reason it burns oil after few thousand miles. I have seen a 675000 miles 2002 Toyota Alphard, used as Taxi.
I have this engine in my Camry, and have almost 190k on it and I was able to control the oil burning. I use SeaFoam in the oil and gas and this has helped some.

Did you get it fixed? I really hope you kept it or bought a different Toyota, because it was just a stupid mistake on their part and never really did anything like that again......unlike other manufactures.
The 2007 specially was a super bad year for Toyota many tranny failures! Even the 2007 Lexuses had some problems! Also do not remember if by that time they had the runaway throttle problems that cars would accelerate to the max and the accelerator was not responding! Then they fixed with carpet fasteners! They gave those for free! This I know the Camry Lexus Es 350 Rx 350 Highlander and some others had an oil line that usually burts and leaves the car without oil in seconds! Plus avoid first year models unless bought new or with warranty, even Toyota misses sometimes!
The 2005-2006 years of this engine are rock solid. Its when they fixed the head bolt problem and before switching rings. Great motor for 2 years when you eliminate those issues.
I looked at a 05 Camry with this engine Did more research after looking and thinking about it and it sounds like 05-06 can still suffer from the head bolt problem
My 2007 RAV4 with the 2.4L oil burner with over 268k miles was eating easily a quart a week. It finally broke down recently: I will probably sell it to a junk dealer even though it has an excellent automatic transmission and tires with lots of tread left on them. I would love to get the problem fixed, but I just don't like the idea of putting a lot of money into what is a losing cause. Ironically, I'm still driving my 1998 Camry with the 2.2L engine that has 329k miles: I'm probably going to finally get new strut assemblies all around since it still has the original struts. Yes, those struts have been making noises for at least the last 20-30k miles and it bottoms out on some speed bumps (which I drive gingerly over). I figure my '98 Camry will go at least another 30-40k miles until I get the timing belt changed again (last changed it at 269k miles). That 2.2L four banger still runs smoothly and gets excellent gas mileage (normally 24-26 mpg in the city and 30-32 mpg on the freeway). Thanks for the video (and I'm sure I probably got sent the TSB about the RAV4 oil burning problem and just didn't open it--my bad). All of my cars since the 1970s (except for my first one which was a Chevrolet Impala) have been Toyotas! And, yes, I want to get a new RAV4 but I'll wait until prices come back down to earth.
Another engine to avoid is the 1ZZ-FE These have timing chain tensioner failures; not the chain itself The engine is found in some celicas, corollas and usually the 99-02 MR2 spyder I learned the hard way and if I would have known I would change that tensioner every 25-30k miles
The 1ZZ is generally very reliable. We’ve got one with 250k kms on it, my Aunt’s has 230k kms on it, a friends has 330-ish kms on it. (Not entirely sure, odo stops at 299999) None of em had ever had bad issues. 1 water pump, a belt tensioner and a valve cover gasket between em.
@@jayislander Ours is a 2005 Corolla LE, aunt's is a 2007 Corolla CE and my friend's is a 2004 (I believe) Corolla CE as well. Thinking about it my HS mechanic's shop also had a 2006 Matrix with 230k kms that was only totaled due to an accident
I thought, someday I might replace my '96 Camry LE with an early 2000's version. But I'm hearing the 2002-2006 aluminum Camry fours are stripping head-bolt threads. I guess I'll be keeping the '96 forever!
Oh yah that engine, also used in the Camry and Scion tC. Looks like the paint is faded on the roof of that Rav4. Since it is a design flaw, it should not matter the mileage and so all should be fixed for free regardless of age and mileage
Davin Peterson - You realize what you’re advocating, right? This problem started when the engine was introduced in 2002. No manufacturer is going to foot the bill to rebuild an eighteen-year-old engine which would probably be burning oil by now anyway.
@@drivedb7 had the rusted Tacoma years ago, had 1zz for over 10 years or so, not trying to get anything now, just saying they had issues, they didn't do anything about it for many, sure some got the royal treatment, others not so luky

Owner of a 1NR-FE 1.33 lt engine Toyota Yaris here, same issues. Last week it got to a point where one cylinder is gone most of the time, while burning a quart of oil every 700 miles or so. I was lucky to find a spare engine with half my mileage and avoid totalling the car, for half the price of the rebuild.
There are other models, but I've corrected my problem without opening the motor. We own and use only Toyota's for the last 30 years for self and work vehicles.
I hope scotty's videos help get the word out with Toyota's oil consumption problem. I sold my oil burning 2008 Camry 5 speed manual for $2300 because 2 different dealerships wouldn't honor the engine rebuild. Only had 151k miles at the time. I was adding 1 quart of oil every 600 miles. Ended up buying a 2010 camry 6 speed manual with the redesigned 2.5L engine. One of the best decisions I've made.
7th Gen Celica 1ZZ-FEE engine was notorious for oil consumption issue. Toyota found out the piston rings were the issue. 2003-2005 engine oil issues was fixed
I have a 2000 toyota corolla 1.4 vvti with 861 thousand miles and burns no oil...I'm in the Highlands of scotland and its never broken down..yes its had 4 clutches and its on the second gearbox but the engine runs amazing.. gets a service every 6 thousand miles
I suppose I wouldn’t have bought my 2009 Vibe if I had known about this issue. That being said, my Vibe burns a little oil in between oil changes but it still runs great at 140K. Regular maintenance is key with this engine.
@@Hanmablood It was a 2009 Pontiac Vibe with the 2az engine. I don’t have it anymore because someone with bad brakes t-boned me last year and my insurance company totaled it. I now drive a 2017 Hyundai Sonata that burns oil even worse than my Vibe did.
When I was young, my uncle, who was always buying cheap used cars, had a Corvair that burned a quart of oil every 20 miles. He liked smoking people out at stoplights. He sold it to a person who was going to drive it to CA from OK(where he lives). The engine blew up after around 50 miles.
Scotty Kilmer You told me how crappy BMW’s are (Thank god !) and convinced me to sell it last year and buy my 2013 Lexus ES350 ! It now only has 36k miles and I’ve changed my oil with Synthetic Mobil One ! Best car I’ve over owned !! Ironically my first “new” car i ever owned was in 1986, I bought a new 1986 Toyota MR2 with 5 speed manual, i babied that car, sold it after 7 years and 73k miles... Never did anything on it except change the oil and tires... Not even a brake job ! I “engine” braked Saved my pads and rotors !! I should’ve stuck with TOYOTA going forward ! I never bought another Toyota/ Lexus until April 2019. Other then my retirement car my C7 Corvette Stingray which i plan on buying in 4 years I’ll never buy anything other than Toyota or Lexus ! Than again With my ES350 having only 36k miles I wont have a need to replace this for a VERY VERY LONG TIME !!
What I heard is, they made the rings very thin and the rings had a very light spring pressure against the cylinder walls. It was done that way to reduce friction to help meet fuel economy standards.
Any luck from anyone to get an old 2AZ-FE fixed at a Toyota dealership? After seeing this video I'm going to start planning on visiting the Toyota dealerships near me to see if they are able to represent Toyota well as a brand and actually fix the issue for no cost.
@@revbikerbigd8664 I used Mobil 1 full synthetic (recommended by “Peter Finn the car doctor “) and did 4 flushes. I could see the carbon coming out each time. Car had 160,000 miles and was using 1 quart per 600 miles. Now it uses less than 1 quart per 3000 miles using Toyota conventional 5w-30 motor oil. These engines need frequent oil changes and they are fantastic engines.
All cars are such money pits!!! My motorcycle has been beyond reliable and super cheap!!❤️ although I do have a brand new Honda Civic. I try to drive my motorcycle as much as possible and for any short trips

Love your channel scotty. I've been watching it for years. I know you are a big Toyota fan. My uncle, a mechanic, was a big chevy fan as I am until he bought his first Toyota Celica back in the 80's. He loved that car and always bragged about it and since then he became a loyal Toyota fan. However, I just wanted to comment about how things have changed. I always heard Toyota's are bullet proof but it shows no manufacturer is based on how many recalls have been issued over the years. My gf had a 2008 Camry with this motor. Although it has high mileage, at that time had 170,000 (currently at 240,000), it burns 1 qt. of oil every 1000 miles. That's excessive so I researched it and found videos on TH-cam about this little over two years ago. Apparently Toyota sent out letters to owners (my gf is original owner). She doesn't recall receiving a letter. Based on TH-cam vids the letter states if the car is under 10 yrs old and less than 150,000 miles they will perform a test and if it consumes oil they will fix the problem for free. Guess what? She called Toyota and was 3 months past and about 20,000 miles over. They would not even consider helping her. I think that's b.s and they should have done the right thing. It was an engineering defect from no fault of the customer. I'm not saying the car is a piece of junk. It's not. It still runs good and even has a lot of original parts after all these years. The accessories still work. However, the right thing to do is take care of your loyal customers. Make them whole. Unfortunately, it's about money and how much is this all going to cost. Toyota should have recalled those affected models. Shame on them!!! My gf recently bought a new car (2019 Hyundai Elantra) and has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. Hope she gets many trouble free miles out of it. Funny thing is she gave her daughter her Camry because she needed a car. So it's still in the family. Now her daughter has to maintain checking the oil level but hey she got the car for free. Not a bad deal lol.
My 08 rav4 they replaced the piston rings because of excessive oil consumption in 2015 for free. I still have the car now in 2021. I'm at almost 200k miles now and the engine only burns a half quart of oil every 3k miles. So im happy. It runs like a clock. I couldn't be happier.
It's a design flaw in the Pistons. The pin hole size oil drain holes clog with carbon and the pressure builds enough to blow by the rings. You can drill the holes out and it'll fix the problem until they get clogged again. If you're going to do that, Toyota sells warranty repair kits with everything you need, Pistons/Rings/Seals etc for about $1900 which permanently fixes the issue.
He always says 'Nice and shiny" but I see a lot of varnish in that engine. You pull the valve cover on my 04 350Z with 130K miles on it and there is no varnish or sludge just perfectly shiny silver surfaces. That thin coat of varnish in oil passages will wreak havoc for many VVT engines, most notable the Nissan 3.5L and 3.7L performance V6's in the Nissan Z cars and the Infiniti Q60 - G37 - G35 cars. This varnish can also cause issues of sticking rings as well as issues with valve seals. The engines will run reasonably good, but you end up with oil consumption and VVT issues.
I have 1ZZ-FE (2000 Corolla) 5 speed manual transmission. It burns some oil, but runs great. Just replaced original factory radiator, thermostat, and gear oil at 265,000. I expect this car will last past 300,000 miles. Added Toyota Super Long Life pink coolant. No problems so far.
If I’d live close to Scotty, I would take my Hummer H2 to him for an inspection even if nothing is wrong with it and very reliable, just so he will later make a video talking smack, road testing it, and calling it a money pit LOL
I have this engine. I need a new head gasket around 150km in my 2006 Rav 4 manual trans. Watch for a rapid loss of coolant, it means you have to attend to it. Do not let it run out of coolant or the engine will be seize and will be totaled. You can find a lot of the common problems with this car by searching your symptoms and the model/year on time. If you do the car will last. Mine has 200km on the odometer and I think it will run to 400k with no further problems because I had and fixed them all.
Yeah wife has a 08 Camry has 217k miles or 349k km and besides putting a quart of oil every 3 weeks no big deal..it runs good. I swapped out my PVC valve and I think it helped some with the oil consumption.
Regarding the viewer's 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, while Scotty is correct that the vehicle should be generating a fault code, the Ecotec 2.4L inline-4 engine is notorious for requiring replacement of the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids. There are two solenoids: one for the intake, and one for the exhaust. My 2012 Chevrolet Equinox would intermittently stall in parking lots, and the vehicle did not always generate a CEL/fault code. Replacing these solenoids is inexpensive (approximately $60) and easy/quick (approximately 25 minutes). It solved my vehicle's stalling issue.
Yes, it is a design flaw, BUT even if I knew about this flaw I bought a 2008 RAV4 2.4 liter with 152.000 miles on board about 5 years ago and I have now 235.000 miles on it and no other issues, absolutely nothing except this oil burning issue. It still running and running, and no transmission issues too. Yes, I change the oil almost each month but I trust this engine when I drive somewhere 300-400 miles away, I traveled to Canada about 1000 miles away and same distance back and had no issues. If the piston rings is the fault, there are no other mechanical issues with this engine.

I had this problem in my ‘07 RAV4- burned a quart every 200 miles. Dealer was good about it, did the work for free but charged me labor. Sent the receipt to Toyota USA and got 100% reimbursement. Doesn’t use a quart of oil in 5,000+ miles. Very happy with Toyota.

I have a question scotty. I have a 2004 altezza here in japan. I changed the oil pressure sensor since it was inop and the oil along with the filter since it was about due. I put in 10W30 because i listened to a "mechanic". Now the oil pressure sits low after car warms up but when i get up to a little over 2000rpms it shoots up to almost max. I believe i have to use 5W20 or 5W30. What do i do since i already have 10W30 in it? Do i have to do kind of flush?
Guessing those are the same piston and rings that Chevy decided to use later on their 2010-2013 SUV engines that had oil consumption problems. They must had gotten them for cheap and built the engines around them.
To the 2012 Chevy Equinox owner. Check your intake solenoids (if same engine, it is about $50 each and you need 2 of them, easy job - left side of engine, near injectors). Had the same issue with my 2011 equinox a few years ago. In my case it gave me code for throttle body, so had to dig around forums for solutions and found intake solenoids do that as well.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine got an estimate for about $3000 to fix this problem at the local Toyota dealer. I told him about the recall, or TSB, on this problem and he got the dealer to do it for about $600. Great video, Scotty. It's going to help a lot of people.

There was a " warranty extension " on the 2AZ-FE engines. My 2003 Camry, 2.4 L, 2AZ-FE, got new piston rings rebuilt in 2009. My Uncle & Aunt went to multiple dealerships before he found a dealership that would do the rebuild. You gotta research the web for the right words to tell the dealership service advisor. Peace! Got a 2008 Toyota Rav4 with this 2AZ-FE engine, they changed the Piston and the Rings completly free with the remanufactured parts in 2016 for free! Perfect vehicle now!

Scotty, the mileage limit is 150,000. I have a 2010 Scion xB with that engine and it started burning oil at about 135,000. I didn't know about the problem but learned about it by doing a little online research. I brought it to a Toyota dealer when it had 145,000, they did the test and it burnt over a quart of oil in a 1000 miles. So, they did the right thing and rebuilt the engine. I told a neighbor about it who had the same problem, he brought his in and they said "sorry." He had 160,000 miles and they wouldn't fix it. Like you said, that's not right.

My ‘09 matrix had the “oil consumption test” completed at 120,000 miles. I was putting 4 qts of oil in the car every 2k miles or so. When the dealer ran the test, after 2k miles, the car magically didn’t consume oil through that period. After they declared it not an issue though, the engine went back to consuming oil and I ultimately had to sell the car before I really wanted to.
I mean I have a 2003 Toyota Camry with that same engine. She has 182k on the clock and only burns 1/2 quart every 5k. Seems solid to me....
That was Toyota's biggest failure, they should have recalled those engines.

One of the dark day's in Toyota's history. The production of this engine was near the time of the Great Recession, so I think automakers were cutting-corners/cheaping out like crazy. But they learned their lesson and came back strong, and other automakers have made far more serious mistakes too, so....... My 2005 Sienna, with the 3.3 interference engine, is still running like a Rocky Balboa!
@@spenserchalkley7013 I have a 2013 Camry with a 4 cylinder, it consumes no oil, but it did develop transmission shudder at 40,000 miles. Toyota had to replace the torque converter free of charge.
They did.....toyota rebuild 100’s of thousands of these engines if not millions at no cost to the owner. The campaign is no longer active.

My 2002 2az-fe 4 cyl camry used about 1/4 of a quart every 5000 miles. It has 240000 miles when I sold it. Ran awesome! I did take care of it though
They definitely learned their lesson on this one. The redesigned 2.5 liter 4 banger that replaced this one is friggin indestructible and incredibly smooth running.
I bought a 2011 RAV4 with the 2.5 L in excellent condition last year with only 71,000 miles and I love it!

@@truthbetold8610 My wife's went 10 years and 180K miles without any engine problems. Had the alternator rebuilt at 120K I think and that was the only repair its ever had. Got totaled when somebody t-boned her, there was too much structural damage to repair but the engine was still running perfectly. You'd never guess it was a 4-cylinder, it runs smooth as a V6.

My 2007 Camry had those pistons/rings. At 172,000 miles the car failed the oil use test. Toyota replaced piston/rings. (Was not advised to replace rear main seal - blew at 900+ miles post piston/ring r&r.) The car now has 298,000+ miles and still operating good.
I ride with a tight rear seal most of the time though.

My father purchased a 1970 Vega station wagon, it didn't even take that long for the pistons and rings to wear out the aluminum cylinders, the mechanic pulled the cyl. head and could rock the pistons back and forth with his fingers, and of course the dealer did nothing.
The best repair for that was to change out the front springs and install a cast iron V8.
The 2az-fe engines are known for the notorious stripped headbolts.
Shame on Toyota for no recall on these engines.

Agree but not the same years for this oil consumption problem. I think that 2002 to 2006 faced stripped head bolt. 2007 to 2009 (or to 2011 for specific model) faced oil consumption issue.

My 2010 tc built in October '09 burns a little under a quart at 1100 miles
I sold my uncle a 2001 regular cab tacoma 4 cyl, it is now at 530,000 miles and still running.

1zz-fe have this too. Changed pistonrings and alot of other stuff while having my engine apart in early 2019 while being between jobs. Learned alot in the process :) It still runs 15000 km later with no oil burning. 2001 Avensis (euro model)
I remember hanging with my guys 1970's they put sleeves in the vega. A bunch of motor head sailors, loved them all.

Back in the days you're referring to I had a friend with a Vega and it had the Vega "problem". Driving home from work one afternoon he heard on the radio that Chevrolet would fix any Vega so long as the mileage wasn't over 50,000. Excited he called the local Chevrolet dealership and sure enough they told him it was true. He then explained that the mileage right now in his driveway was 49999.7 and that their dealership was about a half mile away which would put the mileage about 2/10 over 50K. They insisted that the mileage be no higher than 50K to get the repair. When he weighed the cost of a flatbed haul to the dealership he decided since the car was falling apart and it had rot too that it wasn't worth it. I always thought that was kind of sad.

@@sansfreedom1629 I think it's a yarn. A half-mile tow doesn't cost that much. I had a Vega once. They were bad, but they wouldn't have "rot" (whatever that is) at 50,000 miles. A lot of guy customized them, just like people later did the with Chevy Cav. It's called eternal recurrence.
Only the 2AZ-FE engine made in USA has oil burning issue. The engine made in Thailand has no issue of oil burning issue even though it has clocked more than 300,000 km.

I have a 2010 Scion tC which has this dreaded oil burning issue.
I took it to Toyota 2 different times. The first time they overfilled my engine on purpose so they wouldn’t have to do the repair for free. The second time, I watched them fill it up and checked the dipstick before they sealed off the engine. Lo and behold, it was about half a quart higher than normal. I had them drain it out and refill it to the correct level. After the testing the second time, they supposedly did the fix but my car still burns a quart of oil ever 900~ miles or so. I still even have photos and documentation of the event
My XB had that problem and it took several tests and visits to two different dealerships to finally get it fixed up at only the cost of the fuel surcharge for the rental. Now it runs like a dream and I love it

i own a 2011 matrix awd with this engine. 351k and still going strong. oil changes every 10k, and the only engine work so far is serp belt and plugs.
Here's the deal. My old 2010 Scion xB had the same engine. They extended the warranty to 10 yr 150k miles. Mine started burning oil about a quart every 1k miles when I got to around 130k miles. I tried to get them to rebuild twice, but they said it has to be burning 2 quarts every 1k miles before they would do anything under warranty. I eventually sold it.
Same crap they told me about my 2011.

It wasn’t a design flaw in the engine on the part of the rings wearing out. It was a design flaw of too high piston temps heating up the engine oil on the cylinder bore, on the piston shirts, and around the oil ring. The higher temp burns lower quality oil and causes carbon buildup around the oil ring preventing it from working properly. If you use a good quality full synthetic oil from new or almost new then there’s no problem. Also these engine have NO tolerance for going a bit overdue for the service. Service it every 5000 miles max with good oil and no problems.

RTM! 0w20 or 0w40 in urban only and mixed driving mode, never use 5w30 unless you drive only long distance ! That's the core reason it burns oil after few thousand miles. I have seen a 675000 miles 2002 Toyota Alphard, used as Taxi.

I have this engine in my Camry, and have almost 190k on it and I was able to control the oil burning. I use SeaFoam in the oil and gas and this has helped some.

Did you get it fixed? I really hope you kept it or bought a different Toyota, because it was just a stupid mistake on their part and never really did anything like that again......unlike other manufactures.

The 2007 specially was a super bad year for Toyota many tranny failures! Even the 2007 Lexuses had some problems! Also do not remember if by that time they had the runaway throttle problems that cars would accelerate to the max and the accelerator was not responding! Then they fixed with carpet fasteners! They gave those for free! This I know the Camry Lexus Es 350 Rx 350 Highlander and some others had an oil line that usually burts and leaves the car without oil in seconds! Plus avoid first year models unless bought new or with warranty, even Toyota misses sometimes!

The 2005-2006 years of this engine are rock solid. Its when they fixed the head bolt problem and before switching rings. Great motor for 2 years when you eliminate those issues.

My 2007 RAV4 with the 2.4L oil burner with over 268k miles was eating easily a quart a week. It finally broke down recently: I will probably sell it to a junk dealer even though it has an excellent automatic transmission and tires with lots of tread left on them. I would love to get the problem fixed, but I just don't like the idea of putting a lot of money into what is a losing cause. Ironically, I'm still driving my 1998 Camry with the 2.2L engine that has 329k miles: I'm probably going to finally get new strut assemblies all around since it still has the original struts. Yes, those struts have been making noises for at least the last 20-30k miles and it bottoms out on some speed bumps (which I drive gingerly over). I figure my '98 Camry will go at least another 30-40k miles until I get the timing belt changed again (last changed it at 269k miles). That 2.2L four banger still runs smoothly and gets excellent gas mileage (normally 24-26 mpg in the city and 30-32 mpg on the freeway). Thanks for the video (and I'm sure I probably got sent the TSB about the RAV4 oil burning problem and just didn't open it--my bad). All of my cars since the 1970s (except for my first one which was a Chevrolet Impala) have been Toyotas! And, yes, I want to get a new RAV4 but I'll wait until prices come back down to earth.

Another engine to avoid is the 1ZZ-FE
These have timing chain tensioner failures; not the chain itself
The engine is found in some celicas, corollas and usually the 99-02 MR2 spyder
I learned the hard way and if I would have known I would change that tensioner every 25-30k miles
The 1ZZ is generally very reliable. We’ve got one with 250k kms on it, my Aunt’s has 230k kms on it, a friends has 330-ish kms on it. (Not entirely sure, odo stops at 299999) None of em had ever had bad issues. 1 water pump, a belt tensioner and a valve cover gasket between em.

Retrofitting a Vega with the Iron Duke was an option, but you could still hear the car rusting on a quiet night.
I thought, someday I might replace my '96 Camry LE with an early 2000's version. But I'm hearing the 2002-2006 aluminum Camry fours are stripping head-bolt threads. I guess I'll be keeping the '96 forever!

Oh yah that engine, also used in the Camry and Scion tC. Looks like the paint is faded on the roof of that Rav4. Since it is a design flaw, it should not matter the mileage and so all should be fixed for free regardless of age and mileage

Davin Peterson - You realize what you’re advocating, right? This problem started when the engine was introduced in 2002. No manufacturer is going to foot the bill to rebuild an eighteen-year-old engine which would probably be burning oil by now anyway.

Owner of a 1NR-FE 1.33 lt engine Toyota Yaris here, same issues. Last week it got to a point where one cylinder is gone most of the time, while burning a quart of oil every 700 miles or so.
I was lucky to find a spare engine with half my mileage and avoid totalling the car, for half the price of the rebuild.
I had a 07 camry with this problem. Glad my ex totalled it.

There are other models, but I've corrected my problem without opening the motor. We own and use only Toyota's for the last 30 years for self and work vehicles.
I hope scotty's videos help get the word out with Toyota's oil consumption problem. I sold my oil burning 2008 Camry 5 speed manual for $2300 because 2 different dealerships wouldn't honor the engine rebuild. Only had 151k miles at the time. I was adding 1 quart of oil every 600 miles. Ended up buying a 2010 camry 6 speed manual with the redesigned 2.5L engine. One of the best decisions I've made.

7th Gen Celica 1ZZ-FEE engine was notorious for oil consumption issue. Toyota found out the piston rings were the issue. 2003-2005 engine oil issues was fixed

I suppose I wouldn’t have bought my 2009 Vibe if I had known about this issue. That being said, my Vibe burns a little oil in between oil changes but it still runs great at 140K. Regular maintenance is key with this engine.

@@Hanmablood It was a 2009 Pontiac Vibe with the 2az engine. I don’t have it anymore because someone with bad brakes t-boned me last year and my insurance company totaled it. I now drive a 2017 Hyundai Sonata that burns oil even worse than my Vibe did.
When I was young, my uncle, who was always buying cheap used cars, had a Corvair that burned a quart of oil every 20 miles. He liked smoking people out at stoplights. He sold it to a person who was going to drive it to CA from OK(where he lives). The engine blew up after around 50 miles.

Scotty Kilmer You told me how crappy BMW’s are (Thank god !) and convinced me to sell it last year and buy my 2013 Lexus ES350 ! It now only has 36k miles and I’ve changed my oil with Synthetic Mobil One ! Best car I’ve over owned !!
Ironically my first “new” car i ever owned was in 1986, I bought a new 1986 Toyota MR2 with 5 speed manual, i babied that car, sold it after 7 years and 73k miles... Never did anything on it except change the oil and tires... Not even a brake job ! I “engine” braked Saved my pads and rotors !! I should’ve stuck with TOYOTA going forward ! I never bought another Toyota/ Lexus until April 2019. Other then my retirement car my C7 Corvette Stingray which i plan on buying in 4 years I’ll never buy anything other than Toyota or Lexus ! Than again With my ES350 having only 36k miles I wont have a need to replace this for a VERY VERY LONG TIME !!
What I heard is, they made the rings very thin and the rings had a very light spring pressure against the cylinder walls. It was done that way to reduce friction to help meet fuel economy standards.
My first gen camry has rings so thick you could cut a key into it and open a door
Confirmed. Ours burned oil heavily after 100k miles. Spark plugs fouled and stalled every 10k

Fun fact: this problem doesnt exist in european models. So its mostly a manufacturing issue in the U.S plant.

Any luck from anyone to get an old 2AZ-FE fixed at a Toyota dealership? After seeing this video I'm going to start planning on visiting the Toyota dealerships near me to see if they are able to represent Toyota well as a brand and actually fix the issue for no cost.
Clogged oil rings holes with carbon! Flushing engine with synthetic oil changes can sometimes fix it after 1000 miles, 3X in 1000 miles!
Fixed mine by flushing with synthetic oil. Now back to Dino oil and no more oil burning 👍🏻

@@revbikerbigd8664 I used Mobil 1 full synthetic (recommended by “Peter Finn the car doctor “) and did 4 flushes. I could see the carbon coming out each time. Car had 160,000 miles and was using 1 quart per 600 miles. Now it uses less than 1 quart per 3000 miles using Toyota conventional 5w-30 motor oil. These engines need frequent oil changes and they are fantastic engines.
the issue in 07/09 was the introduction of low tension piston rings in the 2azfe. My 2005 is going strong.
All cars are such money pits!!! My motorcycle has been beyond reliable and super cheap!!❤️ although I do have a brand new Honda Civic. I try to drive my motorcycle as much as possible and for any short trips

Dang, I had an 08 with this engine and had to keep adding oil every other week or so. It somehow lived to 365k miles before it was just undriveable 😅

Love your channel scotty. I've been watching it for years. I know you are a big Toyota fan. My uncle, a mechanic, was a big chevy fan as I am until he bought his first Toyota Celica back in the 80's. He loved that car and always bragged about it and since then he became a loyal Toyota fan. However, I just wanted to comment about how things have changed. I always heard Toyota's are bullet proof but it shows no manufacturer is based on how many recalls have been issued over the years. My gf had a 2008 Camry with this motor. Although it has high mileage, at that time had 170,000 (currently at 240,000), it burns 1 qt. of oil every 1000 miles. That's excessive so I researched it and found videos on TH-cam about this little over two years ago. Apparently Toyota sent out letters to owners (my gf is original owner). She doesn't recall receiving a letter. Based on TH-cam vids the letter states if the car is under 10 yrs old and less than 150,000 miles they will perform a test and if it consumes oil they will fix the problem for free. Guess what? She called Toyota and was 3 months past and about 20,000 miles over. They would not even consider helping her. I think that's b.s and they should have done the right thing. It was an engineering defect from no fault of the customer. I'm not saying the car is a piece of junk. It's not. It still runs good and even has a lot of original parts after all these years. The accessories still work. However, the right thing to do is take care of your loyal customers. Make them whole. Unfortunately, it's about money and how much is this all going to cost. Toyota should have recalled those affected models. Shame on them!!! My gf recently bought a new car (2019 Hyundai Elantra) and has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. Hope she gets many trouble free miles out of it. Funny thing is she gave her daughter her Camry because she needed a car. So it's still in the family. Now her daughter has to maintain checking the oil level but hey she got the car for free. Not a bad deal lol.

My 08 rav4 they replaced the piston rings because of excessive oil consumption in 2015 for free. I still have the car now in 2021. I'm at almost 200k miles now and the engine only burns a half quart of oil every 3k miles. So im happy. It runs like a clock. I couldn't be happier.

It's a design flaw in the Pistons. The pin hole size oil drain holes clog with carbon and the pressure builds enough to blow by the rings. You can drill the holes out and it'll fix the problem until they get clogged again. If you're going to do that, Toyota sells warranty repair kits with everything you need, Pistons/Rings/Seals etc for about $1900 which permanently fixes the issue.
Throw some engine restore in that bad boy!! Or up the viscosity on the oil to a 5w30 instead of the 0w20.
He always says 'Nice and shiny" but I see a lot of varnish
in that engine. You pull the valve cover on my 04 350Z
with 130K miles on it and there
is no varnish or sludge just perfectly shiny silver surfaces.
That thin coat of varnish in oil passages will wreak havoc
for many VVT engines, most notable the Nissan 3.5L and
3.7L performance V6's in the Nissan Z cars and the Infiniti
Q60 - G37 - G35 cars. This varnish can also cause issues
of sticking rings as well as issues with valve seals.
The engines will run reasonably good, but you end up with
oil consumption and VVT issues.

I have 1ZZ-FE (2000 Corolla) 5 speed manual transmission. It burns some oil, but runs great. Just replaced original factory radiator, thermostat, and gear oil at 265,000. I expect this car will last past 300,000 miles. Added Toyota Super Long Life pink coolant. No problems so far.
If I’d live close to Scotty, I would take my Hummer H2 to him for an inspection even if nothing is wrong with it and very reliable, just so he will later make a video talking smack, road testing it, and calling it a money pit LOL

I have this engine. I need a new head gasket around 150km in my 2006 Rav 4 manual trans. Watch for a rapid loss of coolant, it means you have to attend to it. Do not let it run out of coolant or the engine will be seize and will be totaled.
You can find a lot of the common problems with this car by searching your symptoms and the model/year on time. If you do the car will last. Mine has 200km on the odometer and I think it will run to 400k with no further problems because I had and fixed them all.
Yeah wife has a 08 Camry has 217k miles or 349k km and besides putting a quart of oil every 3 weeks no big deal..it runs good. I swapped out my PVC valve and I think it helped some with the oil consumption.
I have a 2018 Corolla, bought it brand-new, and it has 2 safety recalls on it, for the air bag and a fuel pump......Should of stuck with Mazda.

Regarding the viewer's 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, while Scotty is correct that the vehicle should be generating a fault code, the Ecotec 2.4L inline-4 engine is notorious for requiring replacement of the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids. There are two solenoids: one for the intake, and one for the exhaust. My 2012 Chevrolet Equinox would intermittently stall in parking lots, and the vehicle did not always generate a CEL/fault code. Replacing these solenoids is inexpensive (approximately $60) and easy/quick (approximately 25 minutes). It solved my vehicle's stalling issue.

Yes, it is a design flaw, BUT even if I knew about this flaw I bought a 2008 RAV4 2.4 liter with 152.000 miles on board about 5 years ago and I have now 235.000 miles on it and no other issues, absolutely nothing except this oil burning issue. It still running and running, and no transmission issues too.
Yes, I change the oil almost each month but I trust this engine when I drive somewhere 300-400 miles away, I traveled to Canada about 1000 miles away and same distance back and had no issues. If the piston rings is the fault, there are no other mechanical issues with this engine.
I had an 05 Scion XB with 300k on the original motor and it burned a little oil but was ok with me considering how reliable it was!
Bill Herzog yes I think he’s making this issue sound worse than it really is. My 2009 Pontiac Vibe burns a little oil but it’s still a solid running car. It’s nice to hear you have a 2AZ with 300K

I had this problem in my ‘07 RAV4- burned a quart every 200 miles. Dealer was good about it, did the work for free but charged me labor. Sent the receipt to Toyota USA and got 100% reimbursement. Doesn’t use a quart of oil in 5,000+ miles. Very happy with Toyota.
