Helping a buddy troubleshoot the stalling problem with his Jeep. This video recreated exactly the behavior of the vehicle (turn over while engaging starter then stalls out w/o starter kicking) and confirmed what I had read on forums about it maybe being the PCM / ECM / ECU. Thank you!

Thank you for this. I've been researching how to diagnose my ECM for over an hour and no one else has showed opening it up and what to look for INSIDE it. THANK YOU!
Unfortunately I do not own a pistol so I am not able to recreate the shorts, but very helpful! Hahaha

I check the computer first with a test light at the coil and then at an injector. You should get a pulsing light at the feed wires. That proves 2 important functions are working. The crank sensor, and the computer. Then I start checking voltage at various sensors. If that is good then likely the computer is good. Symptoms will at that point direct you to potential solutions.

OMG Hi-larious! i didn't expect to learn anything from this video after seeing you shoot holes thru your ECM but was happily surprised when that wasn't the case! it helped me seeing your vehicle still ran even with holes blown thru the board!
I've been trying to diagnose the cause of a U0107 DTC in my car and all the voltage & continuity checks have been normal. I replaced the TAC module so the only thing left that i can think of is a faulty PCM but before watching this i assumed there would be more issues than just the electronic throttle if that were the case. thx 4 this!! it gives me a lil more confidence in replacing the PCM. only prob now is one of the connectors is stuck in the PCM. I've got the other 4 out but I'm almost wondering if the dealership super glued connector A bc I'd just taken the car in for a PCM recall where they put a cheap little plastic piece over it and i wouldn't put it past them to mess it up thinking I'd be forced back there 2 have them repair it

Gotta love a video that starts out with shooting a jeep part! I think my ecu might be bad in mine. I seem to have no electric connection. Acts like battery is dead with full charge. I know this is a very old video, but hoping you see this. Got an 88 2.5 Comanche, blew the engine on the drive home from buying it so everything worked before that. Swapped a 94 wrangler 2.5 into it, had to Frankenstein a little bit nothing too serious. It cranks but won’t fire. Changed cap, rotor, plugs, wires, ignition coil, distributor and tested the crank position sensor and got 197 ohms so I know that’s good. You think it’s the ECU? Even though it ran fine before? And would I put a 94 wrangler ECU in it or replace the original? Hope to hear from you

That reminds me of my first XJ. It was a '98 sport that I swear was struck by lightning ⚡. When we bought it from a neighbor he told me it just needed a fuel pump when they parked it 7 years before that🙄. I ended up replacing almost every sensor on it. The ecm took a dump and we borrowed one from a friend and tried it. It would start and run about 5~6 seconds and for🤨. Took me all damn day to remember his XJ was a 2000 or 2001 and had a chipped key..........

I have a question. I purchased an 04 Jeep Liberty, less than 24 hours I got a no bus reading on my cluster. Replaced the cluster, BCM, and just replace the ecm. The dealership said my network is down, that's what the no bus is. So now after paying for the repairs my jeep won't star. It's completely dead after starting and shutting off! 😭I'm in such need of help

Sounds like a metal old minelab detector. So hears my issue I got in my car the drivers side of my foot well was waterlogged next I notice a warning light car icon with spanner through it came on the dashboard milometer graphics.keep partly disappearing and I could smell smoke, took it to a backstreet garage he gave it a clean out under the bonnet , unblocked a pipe and got rid of debris. Hes old school doesn't have diagnostics machine or a thinking brain it seemed. He couldn't explain why the revs are so high when I start it up and why it's fluctuating. I think its water that has got into the ecu but.once I start driving it it's not to bad the revs drop back to something near normal but not quite. Just had a mot on it a few weeks before and it passed that. I am just wondering if it's safe to drive and what the worst possible senario is? Do I need to invest in a crash helmet or will the engine just die overtime and how long do you think I could drive it like this? Grateful if you could help sorry I can't divulge the make or model of the vehicle as I don't want to embarrass myself haha.

I have a 91 Comanche 4x4 with an AMC 4.0 straight six with a Aison 4 speed. I power washed it a while back and SEEMS since then it shifts at 3000RPM. From first to second and from second to third 3K. 3-4th is as normal. No bucking or jerking. From what I gather it can be a few things. A sensor possibly a TPS, or the TCM. I paid 600$ for it and it ran and shifted mint before all this started. I know the transmission itself it good. I've ruled out bad shift solenoids. Don't know how to proceed please give me you're feedback. Thanks.

May I add guys that no start is not the only sign of bad ecu. It can be bad fuel economy, Lack of engine power, hard starting, doing all kinds of crazy things. Lastly if you get a computer from a junkyard for an older car, the computer maybe bad even tho the car starts. ECU fail more than you may think and you may not even be aware that its the ecu. I work for a company that test and rebuild ecu.

Before I reset my ECU (94 Grand Cherokee) I was getting codes 12 (I know that one isn't a problem) 27(bad injector driver) and 14 (MAP sensor voltage too low or high) but I'm still having it die occaisonally after ignition, at idle, or when driving. In addition, it will lose all power (in the drivetrain only) occaisonally when under load and come right back. I've reset the ECU and the only codes I'm getting are 12 and 55. DO you think it's the ECU in my Jeep?

Mine just went out, it was reading codes 11, 111, 112, 116. The first two are system ok....dunno why it read 2 trouble codes. Hooked up a 4.0 PCM and was able to get codes off my scanner where the old PCM I wasn't able to read or recover codes easily. It's been in the truck since 92. So they don't last forever.

Jumped it just fine but as soon as the cables came off all hell broke lose, chugging and running rough, speaker feed back, jumpy gauges a few other things until death and unresponsive. Does this sound like an ECU or a major fault elsewhere? Just want to know where to start
    thanks

when he starts the motor from under the hood at 2:42 it looks like the coil wire is sparking to the heater hose. weird. and if the engine refused to run in the 'on' position, but runs in 'start', that leads me to thinking the ignition switch is bad.

mine is sealed how can i check the curciut...also thing like my lights ,blinkers, and sometimes my check engine light would alluminate but throw no code when i check it....recently my 99 ram was running like shit didnt throw any code to find out the crank sensor was bad ...i guessing its the pcm...i checked it with my mac tools scanner...couldnt read it though my cousin who had a bigger better scanner at ammco not sure how he know but his scanner was able to figure out wat was wrong...so im guessing the pcm is bad

I've got a 95 XJ, my check engine light does not illuminate at all bulb is good, cant pull codes via key method, was able to in the past. On petrol it has all of a sudden lost 30-40% power even more noticeable at low rpm's, it runs great on gas (LPG)(nearly double the power and torque)as the injectors are turned off, but on petrol has all of a sudden become awful, really hesitates down low and lacks heaps of power. any ideas, i'm suspecting a faulty ecu... new HP ported polished head from heavy duty casting, edelbrock roller rockers, exhaust and updated non pollution intake, new plugs, leads filters, cap, rotor, coil, ... any ideas welcome\

hmmm, not sure bud. If there is no check engine light its not going to have any codes. Here in the states we only run on petroleum, no propane, so I am not sure how that works but I wonder if you could have a clogged catalytic converter?

BleepinJeep just an update, so, purely a coincidence that the CEL light had blown around the same time my issues started, replaced it and was able to pull codes(went to a few places to get the codes read and no body has the correct connector). Has thrown a lean fuel code, I was starting to lean toward a fuel pump issue, drives even worse now. Mash the throttle and it bogs and backfires and carries on. Used to spin the 33 muddies when kicked hard in the guts. Gonna grab a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow and test. Cheers for the reply. Love your videos, there aren’t a whole lot of xj’s left in Australia so it’s hard to get good advice here.

A pcm is a power control module, AKA it means it is the ecu and tcu in one unit. An ECU is different than a pcm.

pretty sure the ECU was stuffed as soon as you put a bullet into it, but reality would tell you to just buy an OBD2 scanner or just get a paperclip idf it is the old OBD system and bridge the two terminals, it takes 5 minutes with the scan tools to find out if your computer has had it

Funny . I like the simple approach to problem solving. Lets ask Hillary about pay for play donors to her foundation with this approach.
