Their crab friends will certainly take advantage of their weakness.
You don’t want to be a crab with a cracked shell.
My crabs have to hide after they molt to make sure the other don’t take advantage of their soft shell.

So cool...I've definitely never seen anything like this, living in Utah. Only one suggestion for video, you don't need background music; it makes it harder to hear you. Thx for posting!

has anyone tried a "Leaf Blower" to herd the crabs ? the wind and the noise may scare them into running faster to the bucket ?

Not long ago, wetlands were considered mere roadblocks to development - nuisances that had to be drained to be useful.
But appreciation for these soggy, boggy areas has grown in recent years as their role in protecting against floods and in filtering pollutants is better understood.
In a new analysis by Environment Virginia, wetlands are described as both the "kidneys" of our national water system, cleaning out sediment and pollutants, and as "sponges" that soak up excess water during heavy rain events.
A researcher at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) says salt marshes in particular are invaluable in a number of ways. A salt marsh is a wetland that lies between land and open salt water and is regularly flooded by tides.
"Salt marshes are one of the most productive systems on Earth," said Matt Kirwan at VIMS in Gloucester Point. "They produce as much plant material as the tropical rain forests. They produce as much biological material as coral reefs."
And all of that plant material between us and the ocean, Kirwan said, helps slow down storm surges, reducing wave intensities and, by extension, their flooding effects along the coast.
    The value of soft shorelines
The environmental group and Kirwan agree that the protective role of wetlands will become even more important as the climate changes and sea level rises - producing what climate scientists predict will be ever more severe and destructive weather events.
In "Shelter From the Storm: How Wetlands Protect Our Communities From Flooding," the authors say floods are the most common natural disaster in the country, causing an average of $8.2 billion in damage and 89 fatalities every year over the last three decades.
"Scientists predict that the damage caused by floods will only increase in the years to come," the authors say, "to over $1 trillion per year by 2050."
Their analysis looked only at freshwater or inland wetlands, which in Virginia constitute about 1 million acres.
Kirwan, whose expertise is the formation and role of salt water marshes, said a study out of the University of Vermont looked at all the hurricanes that occurred since the 1980s and calculated that every acre of marshland between coastal properties and the ocean were worth $13,000 in damage prevention alone.
"One of the things that really makes Virginia and the Chesapeake unique is that we really have a lot of marshes," Kirwan said. "The Chesapeake region is still a rural region with enormous marshes that are already giving us lots of protection against hurricanes that a lot of other countries just don't have."
Low-lying nations such the Netherlands and Belgium, for instance, have relied for centuries on hardening their shorelines against rising seas, building bigger and bigger dikes or sea walls, he said. But they have increasingly realized that an effective and far less expensive alternative is building "living shorelines."
"They're planting marshes in front of their dikes to protect the dikes," Kirwan said. "Even though they have lower rates of sea level rise (than Virginia), they still recognize the economic consequence of trying to defend their country with hard structures."

i dont get how u were able to keep all of these crabs from burrowing back into their holes. at the beaches i go to, the crabs are always near their burrows and will quickly hide back in there when you get there.
