    Your set up seems to work well, so definitely no criticism. One option for feeding them that doesn't cause rotten sand/smell is dry flaked fish food from the pet store for aquarium fish. I think the amount recommended is very little, like a couple of pinches of food per 100 crabs, once a week or so. Just a thought.

    I feed mine fish flakes and keep a small tub of brackish water in the container with them. I have kept them for several months without losing a single crab using this method. The container doesn't seem to smell too bad either

      @@NavarreKayakFishing i have one fiddler in my fishtank and it sometimes appears to struggle to get up to the top of the rank to get air even after its done it so many times. I get worried it's underwater too long sometimes. Do you know how long they can be submerged in the water and live? I can't seem to find answers to this anywhere

    Been keeping them for a little while now. The smell in my garage is, well, it's less than pleasant. Lol
    My wife and kids seem to like checking on them as well. She actually ordered some sort of food on Amazon, should be here today.

    I went gigging flounder last night and those crabs were everywhere, literally thousands of them.
    I'd assume night time is best to catch them.

      Dig a hole and put a bucket in it. Toss a piece of chicken in it and come back in the morning. There are other ways to do it that are a bit more work but much more effective.

    I have mud crabs with some mud and natural water tilted ,with an ice pack under the bucket , should I put a light on them sometimes or don’t bother with a light . I have them in the garage .

      I had zero luck keeping mud crabs alive. Didn’t try hard to figure it out because I have an area I can usually catch them in pretty quick.

    I live in Florida and was wondering how they would fare on my screened patio? I already have a big tote I was trying to keep worms in, and could use that. The heat just killed my nightcrawlers this year!

      Shade and moisture is all it really takes. They are use to the heat so the patio should be fine.

    How long did they last this time? Also try a few pinches of flakey fish food once a week. It will keep them fed and healthier. 👍

      They made it over four months before I gave it away. Zero food added, zero sand added, and zero issues. Lost a few during a week long cold snap but it’s expected when you leave the container next to the garage door.

    I'm a fishmonger and found a baby crab in a bag of mussels. I brought him home for my kid and put it in a jug of salt water, no sand, and put in some cat food. I live in London so no beach sand. Any advice?

    I assume you don't cover them with a lid if you keep them in plastic tote since I assume they need air?

      I also wet them down with freshwater from the hose. It’s never made a difference.

    You can make them live longer by adding a big bowl of water for them to take a dip or drink

      It doesn’t have to be brackish. This is short term storage and they made it six months.

      I purchased them from the bait company (Rising Sun) but you can purchase them online and have them shipped super cheap as well.

      @@NavarreKayakFishing these crabs need brackish water though, the reason they did so fast is because your not giving them eveeything they would have. They need certain water, etc. Fresh water that isn't dechlorinated isn't good. And not feeding them causes them to die obviously. Not being rude I'm just saying what everyone should be saying and should know, so don't take this as me being rude. I just don't think this is how you keep fiddlers alive. These aren't the conditions they live in. They don't get proper water, or food.

      If you’ve ever seen how fast the die at a tackle shop you would realize that 3-4 of them dying in a week is absolutely nothing.
