The Rundees: Running Shoe Awards - The best and worst running shoes on my feet in 2023

This is NOT a video about the best and worst shoes that came out in 2023 as many shoe lines didn't release a new product. Example: The New Balance Rebel V3. This is a video about the best and worst shoes on my feet in 2023, regardless of the year. The top 3 shoes I ran in (usage) for each category and my favorite.
Note: I am not a shoe tester. Brands do not send me shoes. My budget has a ceiling. I do not tend to run in Brooks, Hoka, ON and smaller brands like TOPO. I wish I could run in all the shoes but alas, here we are. I'm a JAG. Just a guy. So, this is not a fair assessment of the running shoe industry. That being said, I do try many shoes from the big hitters: ASICS, NIKE, NEW BALANCE, ADIDAS, and SAUCONY.
If you want the best of 2023 with a 2023 release date check out Believe in the Run.

Michael Ko - aka Kofuzi does a bang up job as well
/ @kofuzi
But chances are you already know these channels if you found yourself in the cellar of youtube. Hey, does anyone even read these things?
Shoes in this video - for the algo:
ASICS metaspeed sky
New balance Rebel V3
New Balance SC Trainer V1
New Balance SC Trainer v2
Adidas adios pro 2
adidas adios pro 3
adidas boston 12
adidas takumi sen 8
adidas prime x strung
nike alphafly
nike vaporfly
nike vomero
Asics novablast 3
saucony endorphin speed 3
new balance 1080 v13
I cut three minutes out of this video all about Super Trainers - I did not include them because I don't use them for Tempo/Threshold as they are the same price now (this year) as on-sale super shoes from last year.
NEXT YEAR: When super trainers are 80 dollars like the Boston 12 is currently at REI, I will pick them up. As I just did.
Anyway, thank you for watching. A will be back on the Breaking 3 series after this year end shoe review.

That "on to Cincinnati" hits different when my patriots are 3-10 😢 and thank you for the shoutout man! Really appreciate the support 🙏🏽
So, if Taylor Swift fans are called Swifties, does that make you a Belichickee? I'm personally a popavichee
BTW - Hope you got a good influx of subs off this banger.
Yessir! That was an awesome bump and I know it didn't come from peoples interest in Reebok 😂
@@supwell the zig is real
Also, yes, shoutout to Yowana! He’s got good content. Starting following him a few months ago.
the daily posting is refreshing. Miss that SJD daily fix. I know I have a problem because I'll watch running content, even if it's about Reebok
Man. Your cut away ends always get me. Great video and jokes as usual.
They're so silly, I can't stop doing them
I've commented on other channels that you and Yowana are some of the most underrated channels. He did get quite a bump in subs from his kickass TRE coverage.
Thanks for the support. I did like the TRE coverage. bITr and Alex F. , as much as I like them, Are pretty interchangeabl for TRe coverage - interviewing shoe reps who might as well be reading from a print ad. I’d like the opinion of the shoetuber/runner as well as the marketing specs. Their opinion on it
I too, was going to comment about the Speed 3, but everyone else already hit that up, so this is for the Algo
appreciate you, Joe!
I'd seen your previous video on the ES3, and many others, but my son loves it so I decided to give it a try as it was on sale. I love it, much better then my ES2, which I've owned for a year yet in 2 weeks I've put more miles on the ES3, it's so versatile. Bottom line, different shoes suit different people and we have to discover what suits our feet/body/style.
100% agree. I’m usually on the opposite end of Yowana picks, for example. Different shoes for different people. I still enjoy his content but I know if he gets on with a shoe then I likely won’t
@@MidLifeRunner I tend to enjoy the shoes Yowana recommends. Picked up some Mach 6's (wide fitting) after a chat exchange with him. Very enjoyable, though more for the easy runs, as it's just the right amount of cushioning for me. I prefer the ES3 for interval training and faster runs. Either are good for long runs, unlike my Mach 5s which bottom out after 7-8 miles.
The SC Trainer V1, More V4, Adios Pro 2, Rebel V3, and Nimbus 25 are my faves this yr. Some honorable mentions include the Go Run Max Road 6 (I land on forefoot, so I don't have your arch bump issue), Wave Sky 6, Boston 11, Triumph 20, Ultraboost Light, Invincible Run 3, and Shift 3. Oh, and for trails I enjoy the More V2 Trail and Peregrine 13.
Awesome! I like the More but it's a bit too wide under foot for me. Really big fan of NB in general. I also did really enjoy the skechers Max Road midsole, it's just the bump for me. Thanks for sharing your faves
Good vid…I was so distracted by the books as I am a thriller reader too…good book picks. 🎉
As much as I love to read, I don't have the time for it with all this running. Those books are my wife's. She has a book page on Instagram she just started
instagram.com/the.moonlight.library/
My favourite running shoes of 2023 were the Peg 39 and the Triumph 20. It helps they're the only ones I have. Interestingly, the Triumph 22's gonna change the midsole for next year and the Speed 4 may actually return to the speedier side of life.
I'm hoping the speed 4 does get speedier. I haven't run in a peg since the 37 when I first got into running. I hope they mix that one up a little bit too.
You are right about the saucony speed 3. Im using it for my longruns and daily training and taking my speed 2 for some more tempo stuff 😅
yeah I just burned through my last Speed 1's. I had about 3 pairs total I think. They died out around 275-300 miles. I heard the 4 is going to bring back the speed. I put over 100 in the Speed 3 but gave them away to a subscriber because I have too many shoes
I laughed out loud by the end. Great vid!
My wife asks me why I do dumb shit like that and I say because it makes me laugh. Then she says, "yeah, but does anybody else laugh?" And now I have proof. thank you
The Forest Gump getup is always a jump scare when it’s randomly thrown in there lol
I'm not a smart man. So I appreciate you 'splaining it to me
From beginning to the end..... lol Love your jokes! BTW are you not interested in NIKE Vaporfly 3? I love them and already bought 2 pairs.
I am VERY interested in them at discounted prices. And who knows when that will be. I have heard they can go longer distances more comfortably than the prior 2 versions. Do you find that to be true?
Yes, it is more comfortable than V2! Otherwise, I would not buy 2 pairs. Well, if there were no Kipchoge edition , I would still have one pair and wait for discounted price......@@MidLifeRunner
Do you find less of a raceday "bonus" or pyschological benefit by running in carbon plated shoes so much? Or what do you find are the benefits? Easy days, I never use a plate, novablast 3's or 1080s. Even speed day I use Speed 3's to tell myself this would be so much easier with carbon and not a nylon plate.
Definitely less of a raceday "bonus" for me. I suppose using more protection and plates could save the legs or allow for more volume, in theory. That's probably true for me. But it is at the expense of a boost on race day. Maybe next race I'll train more in non plated to see if I notice a big pick up on race day.
@@MidLifeRunner On the flip, I'm looking for excuses to take out the plated shoes. Hitting quicker intervals in training probably has it's own psychological benefit.
@@Maim133you still have plenty of non CP shoes in which I personally get great speed on interval days. The Takumi Sen is my favorite, but also the Hyperion Max2 and Saucony Speed2 (v4 should be back to that speediness) work great and neither takes away from my race day bonus in the Endo Pro 3 with its higher stack and carbon plate.
Thanks Andrew, most of us buy last year's models for their lower price, so in that sense your list is actually more realistic than others'. The sc trainer v2 is on my list if 'm able to find it at a nice discount.
Sorry the sc elite v3 didn't work out at your half marathon (I voted for it). Have you decided yet on your shoes for the upcoming marathon?
Thanks for the vote. Well, I was leaning toward SC Elite V3 to "back up" my Alphafly Killer video, but I was wrong about it--so there's no need to "suffer" through 26.2 in the Elites. I am taking the Alphafly 2.0 on a LR tomorrow w/ 10MP miles - going to close my eyes and imagine if it were race day, is this what I want? I am going to try to get the Alphafly 3.0 but sometimes those things go quickly out of stock, especially in my men's US size 9. Ultimately, still undecided
Yowana is a gem, a chilled guy
Yeah I like the daily fix. Miss it from the SJD days even though they're entirely two different youtuber/shoetubers.
But what was the worst race shoe!?!?!? Great video. I appreciated the shoes ranked by objective data as well as a subjective ranking for each category
thanks Jordan
I wonder if it's Saucony's foam? I only have 150 miles on a pair of Triumph 21s, and it's starting to feel off. Not completely flat just off, And my knees hurt after running in them.
I have the 20s but perhaps the knees hurting is due the nature of the heel drop, which places more on the knees and hips in order to relieve stress on your Achilles, calves and ankles. In which you might want a lower drop shoe especially if you run in elevation
The Triumph 21 uses PWRRUN+ which is TPE, vs the Endorphin Speed's PWRRUN PB - a PEBA based foam. They're not really that similar. (I do own the T19s and have zero issues even after 300 miles - other than it's a boring shoe - but maybe as per the other comment, the T19 has 8mm drop vs the T21's 10mm drop)
@@GrassFedKao Maybe. I’ve ran two half marathons in them and a couple of long runs. Everything went fine. They didn’t start bothering me until recently.
@@tsubakichan I went through 2 pair of 19s. It was a boring shoe but it was a work horse of a shoe. Definitely a lot less bouncy foam formula. I didn’t realize the 20/21 was a different foam than the Speed 3 though.
It definitely can be the construction. I love the Tri-Noosa but I feel it "leads me inward" when I'm not focused on my foot strike and then my shins feel it. Perhaps we could benefit from some slight stability?? I don't know enough about running to say
Wow that ending hit... I was like you didn't want be an ass... but ugh heart hurts so much... now I gotta wait
It's the attention to detail for me. The subtle beeping of a non cuss word while ass just flies right out. You slay me Kou Vang
@MidLifeRunner sorry I didn't want to say it... but when you got it on point to hit all the feels, it's as we marketers say, "make the emotional connections".
wer u talkin about the vomero 17 or vomero 16? what r the better max cushion dailies than it?
16 but 17 is very similar. I think something with more well rounded foam (more up front). Some shoes like the More v4 are max cushion but from a cushioned daily trainer, the triumph 21 or 1080v13 are better options for me. Some like ground contact feel or more firm ride, so the vomero would be good for someone who prefers that
@@MidLifeRunner apparently the 17 is way better than the 16. they changed alot of stuff about the shoe like removing the airpods or wateva if u havent watched reviews on it, they say its actually a pretty great versatile daily trainer now
i have the 1080v13 and it gives me ankle niggles coz of the unstable-ness and triumph 21 is too narrow for my midfoot so it pokes and hurts my arch
hopefully the vomero lives up to its hype coz i dunno wat other shoes will fit good for my slightly wide feet
@@io-rj6sk thanks for the feedback. Perhaps the review I saw about the 17 was confused and she really ran in the 16 because everything she described was my same experience in the 16. I will have to investigate further
@@MidLifeRunner the 17 just came out 2 months ago so could be.
yea u mite b surprised by the upgrades, its getting the thumbs up by alot of the running channels and is claimed as nikes best daily out atm
🤣🤣🤣 that ending😂😂
Yowana!
what a king.
You get a WTF for the Saucony.
I heard the 4 is like the 3 but doesn’t bottom out quite as much. I know most people like it and I loved 1 and 2. My foot just bottomed out :/
Trinoosa 14 in the shoedio! The shoooeeedio!
lol more like the ShoFFICE...shoe-fice? I did call this video the Rundees! I'll figure something out. right there right there
You are pretty alone in the running world with your opinion on the Endorphine Speed 3.
lol out here on an island my guy! Very few of us . Loved the 1 and 2. Hoping for a return
I just want you to know.., I paused the drop podcast for this.
I’m honored, Matthias. Especially since today’s drop was centered on TRE and shoes 🙏🏼
New Balance SC Trainer V2 is so disappointing. New Balance SC Elite V3 so good 🎉
I was very disappointed in the SC trainer V2 and I do believe as a daily trainer- it's extremely mediocre. I do like it at faster work, but then there are so many other lighter options that I only run in it because I paid for it and I want to get my money's worth. And I agree on the Elite V3. so good
Metaspeed Sky IS the BEST supershoe ever: bounce, roll, durability. ❤
🙌🏼
SC Traainahh!
Endorphin Speed 3 is mushy.. Speed 2 much better.
agreed! And I heard the 4 is going back to a more speed focus as well. So, I am excited for that.
Hey! I like the endorphin 😠
🤣 yeah a lot of people do . I’m definitely in the minority on that one.
I’m new to your channel… You’re good! Keep it up!
@@jacobmatthew5298 I appreciate you watching 🙏🏼
Hell ya
Everyone is running is too many plated shoes. They definitely don’t help your foot strength, kind of take your toe-off out of the equation.
Thanks for the feedback. I have heard of people purposely going plateless for this reason. It’s definitely worth exploring as it’s becoming more challenging to find platless options
The 1080v13 in all black looks so boring 😂 damn
lol- no colorway can save that shoe. I got the least "New Balance Dad shoe" option available
@@MidLifeRunner all black colourway is the daddest of dad shoe.
@@aristodiga82 😂 here I thought it was the white with a colored N or beige. Guess I’m a dad
Speed 3 to me is a long easy run to about tempo pace shoes.
it really works for most people. Of any shoe, I probably catch the most grief for this one. It just didn't work for me but I understand why so many other people get along with it. I heard the next version is going to be a bit more aggressive and I am here for that. Got that need for speed
Listen here Gandolf, if you had an all Adidas rotation instead of throwing in aye-sucks and suckuny youd go sub 3. JK. Good job dude. 😅
Genuine laugh out loud. Hadn’t heard those before . But I am totally going to steal them at some point and give you absolutely no credit . Jk
It's a bold strategy referencing two dead celebrities about a shoe that will not die, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for you!
They are fan favorites and the Metaspeed is also a favorite. I'm thinking 1000 miles. Just to do it.
