As someone not only raised protestant, but the preacher's granddaughter, I was of this view. It was pounded into my head that this was not appropriate for any church to ask for people to refer to anyone as Father....My husband is Catholic, but never could really explain this to me to the point where I would feel comfortable addressing any pastor or lead person of the church as Father....I am so glad I came across this video because with the use of scripture and the explanation of what the intent is, not only is it endearing, but makes good sense. This was the last piece of the puzzle that I was missing that, once again, you have explained beautifully. Thank you for that Father Casey and yes, I say Father, as the decision was recently made to convert, after a long time of soul searching and praying. The catholic masses are beyond words and I actually enjoy church...I have not been able to say that in a long time.

I'm a retired Pentecostal minister. I always call a Catholic priest 'Father'. It is respectful and a courtesy. I would tell my congregations that you cannot build a doctrine on part of a verse taken out of context. I told them that when you fill out an application for work or school they don't question where it says "father's name".

@@Quisl I agree ☝️ completely friend. From what I see though, Yes Paul called himself there spiritual father, but they didn’t call him father …(call no man on earth father) …
and it’s obviously not talking about earthly fathers, because the entire chapter is Jesus exposing the hypocrisy of the religious priests of his day…. So our Lord is talking about the hypocritical ,prideful, priests in this verse.
Paul never told them to call him father, he was just stating a fact… that he’s there spiritual father. He planted there church, showed them the gospel and turned them from worshiping demons…he never said to call him Gods Title. I’m sure when he saw the Corinthians in person they called him Paul, or brother….not Father, because it’s almost a form of worship when you call a man the Name of God (Abba, Our Father) because Jesus said about the religious priests -
“They do all their deeds to be seen by others.
For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.
But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.
And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.
The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
      -Saint Matthew chapter 23
And were these not the instructions for the church? How can men add to the Word?

I’ve learned a lot from and will continue to learn. I don’t know why other Protestants cant look beyond our differences,(yes I’m a Protestant)we are all here to present and share the good news with everyone we meet. Jesus death and resurrection is reason we love his salvation, and my desire to tell people about him as much as I can. Again, thank you for the videos and the context you provide too Father Casey.

That’s a really good explanation. My fiancé is Catholic and I’m trying to... understand more about Catholicism. It’s interesting, because I didn’t realize how much some Protestants really dislike Catholics and Catholicism. I come from a pretty “live and let live” Methodist family, with some Episcopalians thrown in, lol, so I hadn’t even ever heard some of the “issues,” people have with Catholicism.
This specific issue people seem to have feels overblown to me, just personally. It feels like the spirt of the verse is to keep in mind the big picture, that your ultimate goal is Heaven and God is both judge and redeemer, to look to Him first. Like Sir Thomas More felt, his heart, loyalty, and belief was first and foremost in God.

    The Fourth Commandment:
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you." (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16)
    Paul says it too:
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." that's the fifth commandment.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of יהוה thy Elohim: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days יהוה made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore יהוה blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11)
the second commandment from YHVH reads:
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I יהוה thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. This passage is not about the choice of title. That is, Jesus is not singling out 'Rabbi', 'Father' and 'Master' as inappropriate. He is correcting this tendency to exalt religious leaders, by giving them special titles. "They love greetings in the market places, and being called 'Rabbi'". In Acts and the epistles we see that men were recognized as serving certain functions in the church: apostle, deacon, evangelist, prophet (prophetess), elder - but never is anybody addressed by these as if it is some kind of title. Btw, Protestants do the same thing as Catholics, here, just changing it to 'Reverend', or the emerging 'Pastor Bob'. It's the same thing, and we all need to repent.

Jesus never said don't call anybody Pastor or Shepherd. Jesus said don't call anybody Rabbi or Father, and remember many times Jesus spoke in parables. But God did say through David before David became king,
"The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want..."
As nouns the difference between reverence and honor is that reverence is veneration, profound awe and respect, normally in a sacred context _ while honor is -uncountable- recognition of importance or value_ respect.
On the other hand reverencing God by calling Him_ Father or Heavenly Father one should reverence God and His laws.
And I would never call my dad father in a reverence way because that title only belongs to my Heavenly Father. But when I speak directly to my dad I do call him father. Because God has told me in his Commandments "Honor your father and your mother" this has a reward attached to it which is long life.
But I don't call my Earthly dad father in a reverence way that title only belongs to my Heavenly Father.
And what's more remarkable is that we read in Isaiah
" For unto us a child is born unto us a Son is given, and his name shall be called wonderful, counselor, the Mighty God, "The Everlasting Father", the Prince of Peace."
And as we all know this is talking about Christ Jesus - God incarnate. Immanuel meaning_ God With us.

@@thatsnoternie Do you realize that in Acts 22:1 there Paul was addressing non-christians who were trying to throw him out of the Temple _ we also see the same with Steven before they stoned him to death he was referring to them as brothers and fathers. So Why don't you use the verses that talks about Abraham being referred to as their father? because they claimed Abraham to be their father but Jesus told these Pharisees if you were Abraham's children you would believe me because Abraham saw my day and he was glad - and before Abraham was I AM, but you are children of the devil _ is what Jesus continued to tell them.
      🌿
When these Pharisees were referring to Abraham as their father, they were talking about bloodline. When Steven before being stoned to death and Paul who was being cast out of the Temple in a aggressive way they both refer to these people when trying to reason with them as brothers and fathers.
in other words there were young people there and there were older people there as well being aggressive against Christians.
      🌿
God is our Father not only in that He is our Creator, but that He is also Our Redeemer _this is what distinguishes the Christians relationship to God, and what allows us to relate to Him as Father. In the Old Testament God is the Father of Israel, in the context of God forgiving and redeeming Israel. While the Jews of Jesus's day were hesitant to call God their Father_ and angry at Jesus for doing so.
Jesus claimed God as His Father_ and told His followers to do the same.
      🌿
God is the Father, and is also the Son, Whom the Father sent to carry out His Plan of Redemption.
What distinguishes the Son from the Father is not the quality of His being which is just as Divine as the Father's is, but the functioning of their relationship, According to which the Son had come into the world to do the Father's will.
We relate to God as Father_ therefore through Jesus the Son, sharing in His sonship through the adoption we receive through Christ's redeeming work for us.
      🌿
But by Nature we are not children of God. As his creatures we have nothing in common with His divine Being, but by the indwelling presence of His Holy Spirit we have been integrated into the Life of the Trinity.
And it is because of this presence of the Spirit in us that we are able to approach the Father and have a relationship with Him_ Like Paul wrote in the Galatians, there it reads_
"Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying "Abba, Father!"
So you are no longer a Slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. 📖Galatians 4:6 -7.

But I give them that respect and a lot of the priests that I have sat down with they can enjoy having a chat with me because they know I know about a lot of history of scriptures especially when it comes to Judaism so when they do have a teaching and I participate a lot of the Catholic members they never heard stuff that I come out and teach but that's because I purpose to go and learn more I do like to go to the church and take my time to pray my greatest prayer is not just to our father but I love to express myself from my heart to God's heart. Best clarification I have ever heard. See if I understand correctly: the big thing to discern here is what you think/feel when you utter the word "father" in referring to someone. Like the difference between what I feel when I say/think "Father" (reverential) versus "father" (implied OR genetic relationship). I am persuaded on fathers in the faith, just as St. Paul says, and we might even capitalize the "F" when using it as a title. Even so, it's a humble title. And certainly priests can be considered fathers in the faith and their title is thus appropriate. But "Father" in the profound, reverential sense -- this is reserved to God. We should not look at fellow humans in that way. Right?

I come to this conversation as a Gnostic, so keep that in mind when you read on.
Just as the teacher here points out that context is everything, I believe that there is a missing portion here: Paul's own history. Paul has a tendency to refer to people as "father" and the like due to both his upbringing and who he was prior to becoming a follower of Jesus - a Pharisee born of Pharisees. With that important context, it brings into focus precisely *why* Paul was using the terminology he was. While I have a great many criticisms of Paul - mostly revolving around his attempts to ensure structure within the early church which I believe were rather unfounded in more than a few areas, but then no one's perfect - the use of the term "father" is not one of the criticisms that I would have of him. He was a wise man who was using the culture he was brought up with in order to educate to the best of his ability.
All told, though, I'm surprised to find myself agreeing with a Catholic about something: literalist interpretations of the Bible are a severe problem with many churches today and it's refreshing to see a Catholic point that out.

This is an example of why it is important to take Biblical teachings in context. It's clear that Jesus is reacting to the use of fancy titles to bolster someone's pride. Moreover, Protestant clergy very often get called Pastor Smith or Reverend Smith. The most pretentious in my opinion is when pastors are called Reverend Doctor Whoever. At any rate, using a title of some sort to show respect to a certain person isn't a bad thing. The problem is when someone demands to be called a fancy title in order to bask in their own glory, and that works the same whether they are Catholic or Protestant, we can all succumb to pride if we're not careful.

The Elders of the Church are Called “Fathers” and the Faithful “Children”
Matt. 23:9 - Jesus says, “call no man father.” But Protestants use this verse in an attempt to prove that it is wrong for Catholics to call priests “father.” This is an example of “eisegesis” (imposing one’s views upon a passage) as opposed to “exegesis” (drawing out the meaning of the passage from its context). In this verse, Jesus was discouraging His followers from elevating the scribes and Pharisees to the titles of “fathers” and “rabbis” because they were hypocrites. Jesus warns us not to elevate anyone to the level of our heavenly Father.
Matt. 23:8 - in this teaching, Jesus also says not to call anyone teacher or rabbi as well. But don’t Protestants call their teachers “teacher?” What about this commandment of Jesus? When Protestants say “call no man father,” they must also argue that we cannot call any man teacher either.
Judges 17:10; 18:19 - priesthood and fatherhood have always been identified together. Fatherhood literally means “communicating one’s nature,” and just as biological fathers communicate their nature to their children, so do spiritual fathers communicate the nature of God to us, their children, through (hopefully) teaching and example.
Eph. 3:14-15 - every family in heaven and on earth is named from the “Father.” We are fathers in the Father.
Acts 7:2; 22:1,1 John 2:13 - elders of the Church are called “fathers.” Therefore, we should ask the question, “Why don’t Protestants call their pastors “father?”
1 Cor. 4:15 - Paul writes, “I became your father in Christ Jesus.”
1 Cor. 4:17 - Paul calls Bishop Timothy a beloved and faithful “child” in the Lord.

2 Cor. 12:14 - Paul describes his role as parent over his “children” the Corinthians.

Phil. 2:22 - Paul calls Timothy’s service to him as a son serves a “father.”
1 Thess. 2:11- Paul compares the Church elders’ ministry to the people like a father with his children.

In that same scripture it says call no one teacher but Protestants definitely do, its also hypocrisy and poor teaching that it's fine to say happy Father's day but wrong to call a preist father. I think it's very ok and respectful to call your preist Father just as long as you don't see him as God. When Jesus said call noone Father I think he was talking about the hypocrites

From a Catholic perspective, I see no harm in the title 'Father' for the Priest. A Priest is called to be a spiritual guide who shepherds his church to their salvation. Also it's a title of authority which the Lord God has authority in Earth as it is in Heaven. So a Catholic Priest is representing the Heavenly Father.
