"some other good reason" for standing during the Consecration --> you are holding a baby (or two) out in the narthex. Don't need to do extreme calisthenics to show reverence!
Not to mention kneeling is in violation of the Apostolic canons of the First Holy Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. Canon XX states that standing is the authentic and proper posture for prayer on the Lord's day (Sunday). So while I won't go so far to say kneeling on Sunday is "wrong", it is certainly not faithful to Apostolic tradition.

@@DANtheMANofSIPA Yes we kneel in the East. It is a penitential act, not a reverential one. And I can't recall I have ever seen a priest kneel at any part of the Liturgy on Sunday (with the exception of forgiveness sunday which is admittedly an innovation as it is supposed to be done on vespers the evening before but many parishes push it to Sunday because even we byzantines are not immune to the catholic minimalist mindset and too many can't be bothered to show up to anything beyond Sunday liturgy).
@@DylanGames1000 Nonsense. The East has never adopted kneeling as a sign of reverance. It is reserved solely for acts of penance because it was always understood to be penitential. The 20th Apostolic Canon of the First Holy and Ecumenical Council of Nicaea was written with this understanding in mind.
I'm coming back to the church after many years, and this was very helpful. I totally forgot all of these things. 😂 The last time I actually participated in the church was the Sunday after my first communion. 😅😅

As a life long Catholic, it is humbling to be confronted with the sheer depth of my own ignorance, regarding the rules that govern our faith. It just goes to show you how lacking many of those catechism classes were that I took. Of course, I am also largely to blame because, having taken those classes from elementary school until I received Confirmation at 16 years of age, I never much paid attention. Thank you, Father Casey, as always, for informing me of just how much more I have to learn.

My father works at church as a sacristan. For years, I helped him at the easter vigil with the fire, where the priest lights up the easter candle. In one year, we changed our prayer books to a newer edition. Well, after the Easter vigil has started, I sat there and burned one by one... We also had other things like an old broken cross from our priest that needed to be burned. It felt very weird to sit behind the church and burning books and crosses.
It may not be very valuable now, but I imagine that keeping older editions of missals somewhere might have its benefits to someone later on. I would've preferred to give them away one by one to parishioners or a thrift store rather than burning them. As for objects like a broken cross well sure, that makes sense
I was taught that there are people who would misuse missals and other catholic items in satanic rituals. I was told that I I ever saw these at a thrift store or garage sale to buy them to prevent this. Probably the reason behind burning them

I am in India, but there are many traditional Catholics in the US that follow a fish-only Friday throughout the year. A well-known chef, for instance, provided a recipe for tuna sandwiches, saying these were staple on Fridays while growing up in her Catholic household.
@danielwisell3836 - It was never emphasized when the rules changed with the promulgation of Pope Paul VI’s Apostolic Constitution “PAENITEMINI - ON FAST AND ABSTINENCE” in 1966. At the time we were simply told we no longer had to abstain from meat on Fridays.
I discovered the difference when I started reading the Code of Canon Law while I worked in the Parish office. I looked for another form of penance, but ultimately I decided to just go back to abstaining from meat.
2:20 Jesus literally said "He who eats My flesh" and the word eats in greek (τρώγω) means to gnaw, munch, crunch. Chewing the host is even more biblical.

Here in New Zealand, we only have two days of obligation (Christmas and the Assumption of Mary) and I have wondered about that but then, I live in a remote area and the Priest only visits us twice a month (we have fellowship on the other 2 Sundays).
Recently, I was at a funeral in a Catholic cemetery. I don't know where the man came from...he approached the person next to me to ask if a Catholic can be cremated. I gather he was dying and his sister said it was a sin to be cremated. Since I was educated in the Catholic system, I seem to know things that most people don't seem to. He asked his question again. First of all, I asked him if he had spoken to his priest to which he said, "Oh no!". So I ventured ahead. I explained that as a Catholic that he could be cremated...in fact the cemetery we were standing in was building a crematorium. I also suggested to go to the building as they ahd pamphlets on the subject. He was almost crying....he seemed to be tortured. I hope he has made his decision with facts and love. Thank you very much for your video. Actually, I was surprised by the only two Holydays we (Canadians) celebrate! I always observe All Saints Day as my Father died when I was five years old and it was drummed into me.
My grandfather was a Catholic priest (long story short, he was a married Episcopalian priest who converted) and he was cremated.
As long as cremation isn't a choice meant to deny resurrection, it doesn't matter in what condition you will be buried.
The ashes must not be scattered or separated. They are to be buried in consecrated ground or mausoleum, not kept in an urn at home or elsewhere.

Father Casey, recently i decided to attend TLM. there, i wear veil, wear modestly, genuflect, and pray in silence and solemnity. i cannot do these in N.O because people and the surroundings become so noisy, too much cellphones. I know i attend church for God and not for me, but i needed silence and more concentration. i hope that the reverence found in TLM may also be required or applied in N.O

i was at Mass and wanted to talk with a person in the pew behind me and she said, like you comments, she said, i need silence and more concentration so can't talk with you, is this what TLM and Mass has become now? Just Me and God and to hell with others? Where's the friggen communal relationships? Or do we just go to Church, stare towards the front and say piss off to anyone wanted to relate with me?
@@btominthewind hi! i think i had different case with you. mine was i was praying after taking the eucharist so i was kneeling then two ladies in front of me was basically chitchatting. besides, if someone wants silence, dont you think we need to respect that? it is just one hour to focus on God. then you can talk after. dont you think so?
@@btominthewind Wanting to just talk should be reserved for before and after Mass, in the narthex. Shooting the breeze in the pews just before or after Mass in the sanctuary really isn't the place for it because we're there to pray. I say that as someone who does not attend the TLM / Extraordinary Form, I attend the Novus Ordo. I'm not saying not to recognize that we're there with other people but there's a time for everything.

I’m not ready to say “I’m back” but my friend’s roommate gave me a rosary that has yet to get blessed, I am going through a Pascal’s wager stage because it turns out my Vonnegut sense of humour is not enough encouragement. I have been saying the rosary in the morning and at night, I haven’t been to mass other than funeral or weddings since I was 16. But plan on going to midnight mass. Gonna talk to the priest about how to figure out how to get back to the flock. Not taking Eucharist until I chat with the padre and find out what it entails.
So much of this went over my head. I just don’t know very much about how Catholics worship but I’m here to learn

In Milan we have our own rite, the Ambrosian one, but no one is told about the difference between it and the Roman rite, so it's quite interesting to see Milanese quite lost in Roman masses and vice versa
We're so lucky in Brazil! We got all feasts as obrigatory and some are changed to the next sunday so everyone can participate when it's not holyday

Can you do a video on what to expect on the Easter Vigil, I’m kind of nervous for everything cause it will be my first time receiving the Eucharist and I’m being baptized and confirmed for that matter. Thank you for all that you do, at my church the priests help teach our youth sacraments classes and they are awesome! Im converting and my parents aren’t so these people have been a big influence on my life
Congratulations! Don't be nervous, the Easter Vigil is the most beautiful Mass of the year. It's the longest & it should be. It's a celebration of Our Lord's Resurrection. He redeemed us. And the Eucharist is the feast. We get to receive the body, blood, soul & divinity of God. His presence changes us, we share in His Holiness. And so do all our brothers & sisters there. Christ is the head but we become joined together as His body, His hands on earth. And we we are called to our heavenly reward, Jesus is food for the journey. God the Father sees Him in us and will say "welcome home my son or daughter"

I remember being kindergarten age and being in Mass with my father, kneeling during Communion and listening intently to the priest, and knowing "something big" was happening and wanting to be a part of it. Was this a "calling" of sort?? In our diocese we have started the practice of kneeling during the Lamb of God, glad to see that again!

I once heard a sermon about how one of the Saints likened the breaking of the Host while chewing to the breaking of the bones of the early martyrs. It's an image that has always stuck with me.

Completely ridiculous, but I'd rather not hear an entire church munching and crunchig down on the host like they were eating Doritos. So, I admire the aim, in spite of the disgusting simile.
@philfrank5601 Come on! It's only ONE Host (as opposed to a bag of chips), and there's usually music filing up the church during that time anyway.
@katherinemurphy2762 manducare in Latin originally meant chew, gnaw on or masticate while edere means eat. The words or consecration are accipite et manducate not accipite et edite. But manducare was used colloquially to mean eat.
I've received everything up to confirmation. I love being Catholic and going to church is always fun. The church has helped me grow close to God more and Its important to know the rules as well. Very greatful for the extra info Father.
It is also important to understand that God is a King and He is royal and this is why our relationship with God should also be royal, and that's why we have the sacred liturgy.

The chewing of the host was helpful. Not heard of the holding hands during the Our Father - seems to be UK/US difference.
After seeing a TH-cam video entitled "When did singing become worship", it got me thinking about singing at Mass. I like to sing, as it's about the only workout I get these days, but the title resonated with me as I feel sometimes the part that singing plays can get a little intrusive.
With four hymns and well as singing The Gloria, the "Holy, Holy Holy Lord God of Hosts..." & The "Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world .. " I'm left wanting more spiritual nourishment from the Bible/Priest (which the hymns do not provide).
Don't get me wrong, I love the hymns and even more so the medieval music and chants from nuns and monks as the voices swirl and echo round a magnificent draughty old gothic cathedral.
So, is there guidance for the amount of sung content for Mass?
I find that the order of Mass has a nice pace to it, but after the Our Father its a bit of a gallop until slowing again for the prayer before Holy Communion. Does the order and content of Mass vary across countries?
Apologies if this is a bit nuts and bolts or misguided, but it's just a few thoughts I had following on from the other 'Rules'

I know these rules the Church gives us can be a stumbling block for non-Catholic Christians. But I am so grateful that the Magisterium has given us these rules to aid us in the worship we owe to our God. I think of how particular the proscriptions for worship were under the Old Covenant. Personally I started with these “rules”, fasting when the Church requires it, going to mass on Holy Days of Obligation. Through the grace of God my devotions have continued to grow, studying Scripture, praying the rosary, giving to charity.

@@dann285 For example, the proscriptions for the high priest to enter the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur (proper garments, animal sacrifices, rituals). “He shall take a censer full of glowing embers from the altar before the LORD, as well as a double handful of finely ground fragrant incense, and bringing them inside the veil,
there before the LORD he shall put incense on the fire, so that a cloud of incense may shield the cover that is over the covenant, else he will die.” Leviticus 16: 12-13

I work on a ship, so I'm usually gone for 4 weeks at the time, which causes me to miss mass fairly regularly, but I make up for it by seeking the church a bit more while home, and also spend every free time I have on the ship in prayer and meditation.

Makes it confusing to know what days are obligatory for me, but for us it’s Ascension day, Easter, Christmas, January 8th, and 3 days Fast for Us Chaldean prior to Easter

Not ALL catholics are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. People with medical conditions are exempt.
Something I have really enjoyed about my conversion is learning just how sensible the faith is. I personally knew no catholics, I came into it absolutely blind with a little guidance from you, actually! But nonetheless, everything I had heard was shown to be foolish. Especially in the little things surrounding mass, the kneeling, the necessity of at least one mass a week, etc. When in reality 90% of it is essentially honor policy. Can you make it to mass? Then go. Can you kneel? Then kneel. Upon examining your conscious, do you feel worthy to take eucharist? Then do. But also, don't walk in a blizzard to mass, don't fall out of your wheel chair, and if you have doubts of if you are in good grace then hold back until you confess. It's all so simple once you actually step through the doors.
About the penance on fridays, I read and understood that it is no longer required in USA due to what the bishops stated in the 1960s but still strongly encouraged. I typically retain from meat Friday year round nonetheless but have not always succeeded. Maybe I’m mistaken cause I’ve heard conflicting reports.
As I understand it catholics are still obliged to fast on Fridays but they can choose what to fast from. A favourite TV programme, smoking or whatever. After all, fasting from meat won't affect vegetarians.
Louie, that is correct. Fr. Casey gave the quick version, which in my opinion was a missed opportunity to educate everyone. In 1966 the US bishops exercised their option to allow the Friday penance outside of Lent to be substituted with an alternative penance. However yes, meatless Fridays was explicitly encouraged as the normative and historical tradition.
To Anon: it isnt merely about substituting fasting, but can be any penance one feels in good conscience substitutes for the meatless Friday. Because there are some questions unanswered as to what constitutes a sufficient substitute, it is often just easier to give up the meat. But others might find it easier to do something else regularly like a weekly rosary or something.
@@MrColinwith1L I meant specifically an obligation to give up, or add any penance, under pain of sin, on every Friday if not meat. I here different things rather or not this is still binding yet I think not, only encouraged. I haven’t on some days so this is concerning to me a bit. I’m someone who becomes anxious and scrupulous very easily.
@@louieabramic4290you should just read the USCCB document itself then, its actually not that long, and will help to see where they were coming from and what they expected of us. I dont think enough people even know this is out there, even though it is on a USCCB page named "Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence."
@@louieabramic4290I was looking this up because i can be scrupulous as well. I am confident that the Church removed penalty of sin for not abstaining, but it was removed with the intent that it would still be practiced. If you are able, you should, but no need to confess if you don’t.

I am a Bapti-Catholic....I was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church, but got double dipped as an adult when I came to faith in Jesus in a Baptist church. As I do not believe everything the church teaches, I consider myself Baptist, but have incorporated the Rosary in my daily worship. Since you’ve incorporated the rosary and thinking of incorporating the dietary traditions, have you heard of exodus 90? It’s a great program for men that’s done for 90 days and ends on Easter.
I’m a catholic who is part of a baptist Bible study men’s group and I mentioned it to my group the other day and they seemed interested.
You do not believe in anything the Church teaches yet you'e a Baptist?! 😀 You do know the Church believes in inspired Scripture, the Bible, God the Creator, the Trinity: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Ten Commandments, the Gospels, Sin, heaven, hell, the Holy Spirit, Mary, Mother of Jesus... to give a few examples.

Thank you for this video! I'm a relatively new Catholic and this information was helpful. One thing I didn't know is that churches are not supposed to use any instrument except the organ during Lent. My church has an organ but often does music on the piano. It's not out of necessity (for instance, if the organ didn't work) but by choice. Is that okay during Lent? Or would the church be better off having a cappella singing, if for some reason, they did not want to use the organ?

Haha, I fasted yesterday because I only sensed the highness of the feast (I was at Mass), and didn't wanna risk it.
About the mandatory Sunday Masses: if someone doesn't go every Sunday, but sometimes does the confession, and doesn't know that she/he needs to confess the lack of Sunday Masses, all of her/his confessions become invalid? Okay, she/he knows that she/he must go to Mass, but doesn't think that it becomes a mortal sin. Where does 'ignorance' or 'uneducation' begin?
Of course if a person wasn't aware he/she needed to confess not going to Mass, it means he/she didn't know it was a sin (unless for a right cause, of course) so the confession is valid!
I know in confession you are forgiven all the sins you forgot to confess too (of course those you really forgot, not just "avoided to mention", that's different😅) and the acts you weren't aware that were sins
Deacons are also required to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

I’ve read a lot about it and everything official from the Bishops I’ve seen (though it’s possible I missed something) has said words like “strongly recommend”. Always willing to chat outside of a comments section as well and willing to delete my comments if you think it’s in any way divisive to the body of Christ
In the U.S., the Bishops do not have an obligation for Catholics to do penance on Fridays outside of lent. We shouldn’t place a heavier burden on Christians (Luke 11:46, Matthew 11:30) so I’m encouraged you will bring awareness to this. The USCCB recommends penance on Fridays outside of lent, but exercises no obligation. See Can. 1251-1253 and the document on “Penance and Abstinence”
@@BreakingInTheHabit yes fr.most of these because what i felt you shouldn't say as a catholic priest is it is ok to not to pray rosary WHAT....rosary is one of the importat prayer which we pray to mother mary it changes lives it changes the heart of lukewarms it draws closer to God and many more ...Ofcourse it shouldn't be prayed during mass but we should pray every single day .... please encorage to pray rosary mother mary itself asked us to pray 🙏

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "rule" of "if you arrive before the gospel, it counts" only applies to those instances when you had intended to arrive on time, perhaps even earlier, but circumstances had prevented you from doing so, e.g. unexpected traffic jam or your car had suddenly stalled or the bus was late, etc.
Still not a rule.

My father still can't chew on the eucharist. Two big mortal sins he was taught growing up: chewing communion and walking on the grass on church property. To this day he won't take any short cuts across church lawn!

Regarding to chew or not to chew. I went to early morning Mass a couple of months back, and it was just myself and our Priest. He had told me after Mass, the nuns that used to work there, didn't chew. They would sit there silently during reflection with Christ in their mouths. I then started to copy this myself and I will say that even something so small is so rewarding, the bread feels as flesh and I feel a deep closeness to my Lord by simply letting the bread sit in my mouth for just a few minutes more.
Being a "Cradle Catholic", I'm sad to admit that I was unaware of these rules. I'm considering asking my Priest to allow me to go through RCIA, to learn what i didn't learn growing up. While we went to Church and CCD every weekend, my parents didn't discuss Jesus, nor did we pray together outside of Church, except for Grace before meals. Ive been bindge watching your videos and have learned a lot. Thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you, so you can help guide us!
On a recent trip to 'Quebec, I was surprised to see most of the congregation kneeling through the consecration, then standing afterwards. I was informed this is the tradition in much of Europe including France. Quebec is overwhelmingly French, hence they use the European standard.
It depends from town to town. I live in France and in my town some people kneel down all along the eucharist prayer, some kneel down from after the sanctus till after the consecration, others keep standing.
I’m in N.L. and in my parish we kneel for the entire Eucharistic Prayer, even though the rubrics since 1975 have only called for kneeling during the Consecration.
