  • We use the word 'father' all the time in the Church. So what did Jesus mean when He said never to use it?

As a Protestant, I really struggled with the vast range of beliefs we had across denominations even though we all were reading the same Scriptures and all agreed the Bible was all we needed. Asking (and learning) "but what did it mean to the early Christians?" was a critical step in my journey towards the true Faith. So easy to read things in an isolated manner through only the lens of our current culture and time.

    • @Patristix

Absolutely! A lot of beautifully peaceful answers are found by looking at what Early Christians believed. And it's powerful knowing our faith is the same as theirs.

100% true I grew up Baptist but I now go to an Orthodox church but am not catechized yet I do still have some questions but I think Orthodoxy is the closest we have to the original I was blown away by the reverence holiness and the nice and non judging laity. I realized protestantism has it all wrong when I saw my first Divine liturgy.

In the Pentecostal church I go to, we frequently ask "but what did these scriptures mean to the early church?" We are always trying to align ourselves closer and closer to the early church, to the apostles, and God the Son. However, I do not see the answers in the Western denominations. So, if Orthodoxy is THE Church, that is were I will go.

As a devotee protestant, I felt really good about that video, you showed the correct arguments without just saying "protestant reformation invented that", but even quoting the reformers on the topic. Sadly nowadays a lot of protestants contradict the reformers and adopt easily just "bad arguments" and bad interpretations of the Bible of misunderstandings. The Reformation was about returning to the old faith, not inventing anything by our own understanding of the Bible, and I hope your videos along with protestant videos correcting wrong modern protestant misunderstandings could help the entire church.

Usually I find that anytime the Bible seemingly contradicts itself its because English translations are horrible and/or we are so removed from historical context that the meaning is lost.
Another issue is translators trying to connect the gospels too closely. My biggest pet peeve is the Luke verse "Wherever the Body is there the Eagles are gathered together." Only the KJV is correct. In context Jesus is talking about Christians being gathered by the angels.
But because of translators wanting sychronicity they replaced eagles with vultures to match the other gospels that are talking about sinners in a similar text, regardless that the Greek words used Clearly deliniated that they were very different passages.
    Ok. Rant over.

May I suggest, that the title "Father", is a reference to Christ God. As with venerating an Icons, the 'honour is passed over to the archytype'. So when we greet a priest with 'Father', we are greeting Christ/God the Father, honouring Him.

  • @georgiosgerontas760

Hello brother ☦, I have heard and this explanation from elder Mytilineos :
We see in the Gospel (John 14,8) that Jesus extends Fathernity to Him , so when Philip is seeing Jesus , he sees the Father , as Jesus said.
Therefore , an Eastern Orthodox priest is in place of Christ , into the Church , and it is valid to call him Father.
    Gospel of John 14: 8 - 10 ...
    8. *Philip said to him: Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us.*
    9. Jesus said to him: *I am with you all this time, and you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father;* and how do you say, show us the Father?
    10. Do you not believe that I am in the father and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I do not speak of myself, but the father who is in me does the works.

Similar way as we are called sons (and daughters) of God by grace, after Him Who is the Only-Begotten Son of God by nature, so the title "father" is given to priests by grace. Very same logic can be applied to many other titles: Jesus Christ is the Angel (literally "Messenger") of the Lord by nature, and thus faithful spirits and even some people are called messengers (angels and prophets) of God by grace. Jesus is the King, thus people who are ordained by God's will to lead their people are called kings. Jesus is the Shepherd, Jesus is the Priest, Jesus is the Judge. I could keep going on, but the point is clear. Very same pattern is in the heart of *_theosis_* too.

So what he's basically saying is that the bible isn't literal and especially the words of Jesus? Seems a slippery slope to me. I don't mean this as hypercritical either. Im curious about orthodoxy and have been for a couple of years. The other thing is iconography being a toeing of the line to idolatry. Also praying to the saints rather than praying to God. And also worshipping Mary herself. Seems idolatrous. Its all very confusing

    • @Patristix
      @Patristix  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

What we're stating in this video is the traditional and correct Christian interpretation of the verse. Nobody for the majority of Christian history saw Jesus as talking against priests, and the verse has been misinterpreted in the last couple of centuries by Western readers (especially in English).
Iconography is emphatically NOT idolatry. For our intro on the subject watch here: th-cam.com/video/iCixfrMY5ME/w-d-xo.html

Here is our understanding of Mary: th-cam.com/video/rS7JBF_M93I/w-d-xo.html
The Orthodox strongly stand against idolatry, and preserve, defend, and love the teachings of Christ our Lord. With all of our videos, do check out the extra research links we add in the descriptions. And if you can, please visit an Orthodox Church and chat through your questions/concerns with a priest there. 1. He is not saying the Bible isn't literal, he is saying you must seek to understand it correctly through the lens of the Church.
      2. Read St. John Damascus on Iconography and the 7th Ecumenical Council; Nicaea II.
      3. We do not pray to the saints RATHER than to God. We pray to God and ask the Saints for their intercessions.
