      While it is pretty and extremely well made, people in the 1600's wouldn't have been extremely impressed by this imo. They had the ability to manufacture armor of an equal or greater quality out of steel and iron, which is a good deal more practical and useful to a person at that point in time as well. Most people would be unable to afford armor like this leather anyways and they were a highly practical and utilitarian people. They didn't have access to a laser cutting machine that does most of the work for you either, they made things by hand. Also by this point in history, armor was becoming less and less popular due to the provenance of firearms; tldr leather armor like this would've likely been an extremely expensive and almost entirely decorative piece of kit that most common folk would have little to no interest in.

      @@harleymarshall6929 all you say is true to the point were they would appreciate the precession and the craftsmanship. They would know the value of beautiful created items, not knowing the magic of laser cutting, this would be way beyond what armorers would be making due to time and cost. I am well aware of things like a lace glove would cost more than a years wages. but ye even a pair of jeans would blow their minds.

      @@benjamindemontgomery6317 I don't think that line of thinking gives historical people enough credit; they had the ability to mass produce things like textiles especially; certainly not to the same degree we can in modern day, but they were ingenious people back then too and I doubt they would have been blown away by anything made by a machine. I'm sure they'd be impressed at the technology itself but I doubt the product would be mind boggling to them in any way is my point.

    We've been using our laser cutter for a year on our armours and vambraces and what a time saver it is. Plus we've been able to get so much more detailed with piece. Wasn't sure at first if this tool was going to fit out leather business. Was so with the investment.

    If you want a nice mottled look, your best bet is natural sea sponge. It's definitely more expensive than synthetic sponges, but they do last quite a while and can be reused as long as you wash the paint out of them at the end.

      That is understandable, these tutorials we're making demonstrate many techniques. And not everyone will want to paint the leather, and not everyone will only want to dye the leather. I think painting increases the range of colors a lot and is less prone to sun damage. It will stay more vibrant over time. This is why our more advanced projects will be painted typically unless it is a more earthy subdued design we're going for.

    • @Princearmory
      @Princearmory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a narrow view of craftsmanship. You're certainly welcome to cut each scale out by hand if you feel that provides additional value, I've done it myself many times.

    • @rob5customs
      @rob5customs 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Quite the opposite, it widens the view of craftsmanship. Just that the crafts involved are different. Take the example of sewing by machine or by hand, two entirely different skills and you can be great at one but not the other for example. I would say that someone who can put together a good machine sewn leather product is a great craftsman, but I don't think they have a right to call themselves an artisan or put a 'Handmade' label on the product.

    • @Princearmory
      @Princearmory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rob5customs I think it varies, I can even agree to some extend but your example is not a good one because using a sewing machine doesn't make a piece 'not' hand made. The disction that I think is important is using a tool to expedite labor processes does not mean a thing is not hand made. There's a difference between an artisian using a tool to help build a one of a kind piece, or an assembly line of factory workers making a thing, or indeed of just a machine spitting out a part. Something being 'hand made' is often a marketing term more than anything because the reality is, every artisan enjoys the benefits of modern technology to make their tools, even hand tools, more affordable and acessable than ever.

    • @rob5customs
      @rob5customs 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Princearmory Well, obviously I disagree about sewing machines. But I agree about tools, of course we need to use tools and effective tools at that. It's when the tools automate and/or change the process you can't call it handmade (or artisanal) anymore in my view. For a perhaps better example take sanding. I can sand by hand with sandpaper or by using a sander that is much quicker to do the same thing even though I hold it in my hand. But if I take my product and put it in a box and let a robot sand it, it's no longer handmade because the process was automated. As for why I think the sewing machine is not on the same level as the sander (same end result but faster) is because it does not give the same result as hand stitching -the process was changed. (Then there's the argument whether it matters or not, but that's another discussion...)
