You go into so much detail on every video. I think you are an absolute star sir. You've helped me no end and that is as a painter. I take on the occasional wall or ceiling now thanks to you. Not as efficient as a plasterer, but financially it helps my customers. You're amazing

Loving how you arrived to the sisters, no tools, nip to the B&Q then get going with fresh out the box tools......and of all things in a pair of sandals. Top notch :)

I am a beginner plasterer and after watching many of Blaine's very helpful videos, i just finished plastering a room, including the ceiling. I have a lot of experience on ceilings, as i repeated the attempt three times.☺.
My overall difficulty with both ceiling and walls was not being fast enough to do a full wall before the plaster was drying. I divided a wall into thirds to do a third at a time, but this had its own difficulty: i would have to mix up 6 batches for the two coats of one wall. Another result of slowness was having to clean tools more often for one wall, as the plaster would be drying on them.
Next time i do a room i will use that slowing agent, which gives you longer before the plaster dries. I am sure that this will give me the necessary time to manage the plaster. I also don't think it will slow me down because i would only have to mix two batches for the two coats and won't have the same problems of plaster drying on tools halfway through doing one wall.
I also used a speed skim which was really useful for flatteniing the walls.

      @PlasteringForBeginners  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Hi mate. First of all, fair play to you! Sounds like you're giving it a good go. Speed is a massive problem at the beginning and it does come with time.
And the situation of mixing 6 times is going to slow you down massively so use Extratime like you said. It will definately mate your life easier!
But other than that, just keep doing it! You'll get better with time my friend.
Well done! Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing 👍

Thank you for your great tutorials. Also the tip about sanding the edges of a new trowel is invaluable. Yesterday it was frustrating me, today (with a sanded trowel) it's beautiful. 🎉

Love the videos, I'm a jointer by trade but currently learning to skim at college and your videos are always talked about amongst the students.
The detail on each stage is fantastic, they're always easy to follow and keep me interested.
It may be something you have done or have considered doing but you should definitely be in the college's teaching new generations of plasterers the right way of doing things.
    Keep the videos coming 😁😁

I'm a beginner- only ever plastered walls when needing filling or half a wall re-plastered...today I decided to give an Edwardian house a go. From 10am-6:30pm with a 15 minute break I only managed to prep a pre-wallpapered wall and plaster 1 x wall that was almost 3 metres high by 4 metres wide...very ambitious.
I'm exhausted and didn't do the best on the edges but I'm going to try and fix this tomorrow as well as, the fact I had to plaster up-to skirting boards and so need cleaning that up. I have watched several of your videos which has helped me drastically today! I made a rookie mistake of leaving plaster on my trowel for quite some time (20 mins or not far off) and now have small dots which I believe are rust spots. Gutted as purchased a Nela and had purchased a protective cover in hope to keep it in good condition.

I learnt plastering off TH-cam about 10 years ago but just coming back to it this was a nice refresher course. I learnt to use a plazi for a lot of the work and to wet the wall down with a fine mist sprayer. Neila superflex for final polishing stages. I’ve also got a longer refina hand blade for speedy flattening but it’s all the same. Many thanks.

Really great video! I’ve been watching these videos and done a couple of walls, which have turned out really good!
I also used extra time to give myself longer. I had a plasterer in to do landing, hallway and stairs and he asked who did the other walls - when I said me - he couldn’t believe it and asked why I’d got him in!!
I also used a speedskim to get it flatter and it seemed to work.
One question- how long should I wait between coats 1 and flattening and same between 2 and flattening, wet trowelling etc…
    Thanks for the videos!

I was diagnosed with melanoma during the first part of the pandemic and had lots of time to look at the things that needed attention in my house...mainly the woodworm.
As the floors were riddled, they all came up...along with parts of the stud walling to check whether they'd gotten in there too.
Anyways, long story short, I'm still going now 😂😑😫
I have mostly been dealing with stuff found along the way such as cold spot black mould on the returns at the top of the wall into the ceiling in the master bedroom as a result of the plasterboard backing directly onto the soffit vents.
I have sorted that now to the best of my ability...however, it's a mess and I don't think I'd be able to do it myself...although, I'm sure it'ld make some good content for a channel such as this. Well, it would if I were doing it at least 😂
Most of the time I've taken is getting the loft sorted...it had the old standard insulation to 100mm in the newer extension...it was the same in the older part of the house only they put plasterboard over the top of some old lath and plaster...which had about 8 X 30ltr hoover bags worth of coal dust laying atop it...along with about a wheeliebin's worth of plaster rubble.
As we also redid the stud wall at the top of the stairs and put a new loft hatch in, I also have a couple of holes to patch.
I'm about there...but, then, the plastering needs doing...I'm going to have to get some folk in I think as it'll take me way to long otherwise...and I don't think I'd be able to do the tricky bits.
That said, watching this, you do make it look pretty easy...bet it's not though 😂

Hey Blaine, I found your videos and tutorials with the 10 steps really helpful and had a go myself. Firstly you make plastering look easy but it is possible for a complete novice! I have plastered 12 walls in my house one was the horrible porch to upstairs landing which was a timing nightmare and not to mention 3 ceilings! I improved over time and saved loads of money. The only downside was how long ot took but this was due to fitting it around the day job and a functioning house. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

I think the only thing that would makes these videos better is a quick temp snd humidty ready and then having a clock eith the time in the corner of the video. I would love to know how long this took you.

A good vid Blaine. I am glad you have put this realistic truth out there! My spine fusion has been delayed for another 6 weeks. Though TBH I can't blame all this issue on my 36 yrs of plastering, alone. I think the weakness was there already; Some guys that are my age that I went to trade college with are still doing well and are quite fit! My take is as you say; Maybe do the site work in your 20's and 30's then get out of it and into domestic. You will then have some control of your work schedule! The other issue might be to arrange your mortgage to 40yrs. This is the point when all the joints can start going! If you sort your mortgage early you might be able to slow down a bit and pick and choose your work. If you have limited financial commitments then you could in theory go on plastering small jobs indefinitely! Plastering as a life career, if planned correctly can serve to give you control of a business and carry on into retirement on a smaller scale. I do not know any other career that can offer this!

Sorry to hear about your back but I appreciate you sharing. It shows that it’s not an easy trade but at least it’s not everyone who gets injured. But I agree about not working too late in life...my granddad taught me the same. Anyway, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. All the best 👍

This is the best video for plastering, thank you for going into fine detail. Do you out the first coat of pva, then the undercoat, then second coat of pva? Does the second coat of pva go on top of the undercoat? And if so how long do we wait to put in the second coat?

Hi Blaine. Completely hooked on your videos. I always said that the one thing I'd never do is plastering but at an age when I should be dividing my time between the tennis club and the golf course, I've taken over a 1960s house that needs doing top to bottom. I understand that the plaster remains workable for about 90 minutes but as a complete beginner, I'm wondering if mixing a whole bag might be too much until I get the hang of it.

Great vid. Do you recommend a couple of spot lights to see what your doing better? and any tips on making sure you get your second coat fully covered as its hard to see?

Amazing how different plastering techniques and materials are from the United States. Definitely more skill required on your side of the pond.

I don't know if you've tried it Blaine but if you use the Flexi for the previous 2 stages it makes the job even easier and a better finish especially if the Flexi is larger than the laying on trowel I just got an 18 inch 💣

Hi mate! Thanks for watching pal. To be honest, I don't like using Flexi trowels too early mate - it can create ripples but they are lovely to use. I agree with you there! Thanks for watching my friend...keep up the good work 👍

A great video that really strikes to the core of why many are here.
As a new subscriber the only issue I am having is with locale. I live in USA. Can you suggest products that we can buy as well? Really about the plaster products mainly.
Also this video really hits the bullseye. My question is does this same process work for drywall? Painted drywall. There is nothing like plastered walls. Do you have any videos where you have applied a knockdown finish to your walls and sunburst type ceilings, or is this for more advanced plastering techniques?
    Thanks again

Haha I left all my tools in Hastings. I plastered this over the holidays in Manchester which is why I'm using new tools - I wasn't expecting to work over Christmas but it's worth it for family ha!

This is a blummin' brilliant vid, bud! I'm a decorator by trade and I wish all plasterers had your work ethic. I'd love to be able to plaster and I'm really toying with the idea to do some reskimming in my own house as all the walls are atrocious. Only thing is, everything is painted with Silk 🤢. I've tried Scraping some off, but there arw some stubborn areas. Would blue grit be the one over silk emulsion?

Amazing stuff just finished video. I am adding skim coat to wall soon, might need to replaster dints everywhere. Can you skim coat a section leaving rest of wall?
