I have one of these since 2007. I purchase it from the orig owner and it was still under warranty with10K miles on it. It now has 49K miles on it and I have had very little issues with exception of a leaky fork seals, rear ESA shock got stuck, ambient temp gauge stopped working and wind screen motor took a shit. My main concern now is the power brake wizzy pump, which is still working fine but there is no longer a replacement part available. So if I was going to buy a used RT I would look for a newer model 07-13 or newer that does not have the power brake thing and the newer bikes shift much better. I have a 2013 GSA and it shifts smooth like a Japanese bike.
Another thing,, Regarding the mirrors,, If you get a set of bar raisers (ebay $30) they raise your hands ,so looking into the mirror show your hands at the top of the mirror ,you are left with a pretty big viewing area lower down.... I,m 5,10" and it works for me...
Just saw one for sale nearby and I'm seriously considering it. Test rode one of these a decade ago when my F800S was getting some maintenance and was awed by the comfort, but what knocked me out was how responsive it was! These bikes can move and pull for days! I wanted one back then but couldn't afford the $15K+ pricetag. They still look amazing to me now, so we'll see. Thanks for the authentic, honest review.
Man, from $15k down to a few thou!! Understand depreciation touches everything to one degree or another. But this bike was/is considered a bit of a luxury ride. That's one heck of a depreciation. . . I like 'em still, though, and am considering getting one in the future.
You can buy R1200RS mirrors and they install in the handlebars. I did that with mine and they’re great. I ended up buying them used on ebay for less than $50.
i have a 2005 in the grey metallic 42k on clock same spec as yours i paid £2000 for it its not my only bike but wow i love it and i think this model (hexhead)is the sweetest looking rt
Own a 2008, great machine, only problem at 5`6" it's big for me, have to wear modified Frankenstein boots to reach ground, perfect coverage of elements with electronic windshield, heated grips and seat, also drive a moto guzzi v7 stone which I find myself driving more, I love the beamer, even lowered the pegs a inch and a half and it's just to big and high. Maintenance on the beemer is easy, repairs when needed absolutely suck if there not under warranty. It still a fantastic bike , wish they made a smaller version,
Yeah, i'm in the same situation I checked out a few GWs...and that just didn't work, i could barely get the balls of my feet down. if the bike went to the side, god forbid on dirt or gravel, i wouldn't have been able to hold it up.. these RTs are supposed to have adj. seat heights thou. i'm going to look at a '96 tomorrow...
Thanks, I feel better about my first BMW bike now! My sons gifted a 2008 R1200rt on me last year and I love it! Haven’t rode a bike since the late 60’s a Harley XLCH 900. Heated vest? Looking into one! Thanks, down the road I may have a question or two about my bike! Take care Gil! Oh yeah, Yucca Valley California!
Nice Review You have to be a bit cautious as ALL the repairs with common problems with the antilock breaks our costly and can make the NON-DIY items costly
Those whole you mentioned for wing mirrors. I got some long M7 or 8 bolts and nuts and some wing mirrors. If you want more please contact me. R1200RT owner. Marcus 577 London The UK.
How has a year of ownership worked out? I am looking at a 2005 with extremely low mileage and wondered if you have any thoughts on this machine. Bib, England.
I totally love it! I've put about 15k miles with no issues except tires, brakes, and lube. Went on a few week long rallies and a few weekend tours. Bike is flawless.
I have just over 62k. No problems so far. I wouldn't hesitate to ride this bike to the moon and back. To me it's like new! I keep up with all the normal maintenance, and I make sure to flush the brakes every 2 years.

Craigslist. Watched him drop price over a few month. Gave him a low ball offer and a few days later he called and took it. Great bike. BUT, if the clutch or wheezy brakes crap, I'll be in for big buck repairs. So far, no issues.

short and sweet, great review
Thank you. I am considering buying a 06 and I think you convinced me.
Nice review but I’ve never had any issues with the mirrors. For me they are excellent.
That review was good, very interested in these bikes ...
Great review - would be great with a kind of “use cases” that makes in necessary to add a cruiser bike - need it to convince wife😂
Nice Review

I ride one of these everyday. Mirrors are superb and easy to see what's behind, maybe you need to adjust them a bit.
Just look at the hat he's wearing and tell me why I should listen to his opinion of any MC
Marcos Resto stfu
Look at MaxBMW’s garage series for R1200maintenance vids
3:20 "tall master race people" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 they do need bigger shifters but one fine ass bike for sure

I ride a 2005 RT ,, One of the cons of this bike is riding in hot weather,, In hot weather you cook on this bike ...
Try k1100lt in the summer - then You will know what a hot bike is 😂
Let me add the ST 1300 to the list of summer deep fryers.
$3K? You stole it! Nice.
That was a few years back. Used bike prices have since gone insane!

@@bikerforlife5222 Thank you for the prompt reply BfL. Hoping to get to view the bike tomorrow, local lock-down permitting....
No problems with the whizz-brakes?
How many miles does your RT have on it now? Any issues worth mentioning?

how much did you buy it for .
B.S. there isn't a single 1200 rt in the entire country for less than 6500.
Lots changed since 2018. Bunch at that price when I was looking.
They are everywhere for 3-4K dude.
