    Bought mine new in early '07. Coming up on 180K miles and still runs like a dream.

    Same here. From 05/2006, bought it from the first owner in 2011 with 33500 miles on the clock. Two years the bike has 102500 miles and still runs smoothly. Meanwhile the shaftdrive has been replaced, though.

    Okay Russ. I've been following you for almost a year now, and I truly appreciate the work you do for Motorcycle safety, and helping people get the most out of their bikes.
    I am finally getting ready to purchase my first motorcycle. I am looking at several, most of them BMWs. The top contenders are a post 2006 (gotta get away from the servo brakes) K1200GT, K1300GT, F800GT and the R1200RT, a 2009 or newer Yamaha FJR1300, and lastly, the Honda CTX700. I'm not sure what the name for that is in the U.K.
    I live in the Pacific NorthWET of the U.S., so our weather seems to be rather similar, 8 weeks of sunshine a year, and the rest is overcast and damp. I will be commuting 30-40 miles per day, each way, to and from work. It will be mostly highway driving. So, I'm looking for a fully faired bike, with a windshield. I would like heated grips and a heated seat. I can forgo the heated seat, but if I can get it, why not? :) Heated grips can be added to any motorcycle with something like an Oxford set of grips, so even if the bike doesn't have it, I can add them. The Yamaha bikes all have ABS, as do the BMWs, but the Honda does not, unless I purchase the DCT version. By the way, I have no issue with the DCT version of the bike. I can drive a manual transmission vehicle, and there are days when an Auto box, even on a motorcycle might be welcome (i.e., long traffic delays). But, with the DCT, just flip it over the manual, and have fun. I use the paddle shifters in my Camry, too! LOL
    There is a 2013 R1200RT, has about 32K miles on it, which is pretty good (actually about the same mileage as my 2013 Camry). Now, I started out looking at the K1200GTs. I would LOVE a K1600GT, but honestly, for a first bike, that scares me. The K1200/K1300s though fit in the same size category as the FJR1300, and when I first started looking for a bike, I was told by four different people, at four different times (only one of them a salesperson) that the FJR would be a good place to get what I wanted. The K1200GTs, at least the 2006s and early 2007s have the Servo Brakes, and I was warned to stay away from them. Of course, most of the ones for sale out here are the 2006s.
    Next, I may be overweight, balding, and a bit of a beard, but I don't have a lot of coin. I also wear jeans! One of the reasons I'm actually looking at the BMWs is their stellar reputation as a bike that can just go forever. Yes, you need to do the maintenance, and take care of them, but they seem to run and run and run. In the Seattle area, where I live, there are probably more BMW motorcycles on the road than any other kind, they are just everywhere. The FJRs seems to come in a close second. I've talked to these BMW owners, and they are working people, just like me, and they say they wouldn't own any other bike.
    I've just turned 59, and this will be my first bike. I'm not like these young kids who want to run to the redline in all gears, and that you can hear winding their bikes out all night long. I want a long term, dependable touring motorcycle that I can get down the road on, safely, comfortably, and carry a good bit of kit, if I need to. In the U.S., we don't have nearly the training courses like you do over there, and I really enjoy watching your channel to learn from you. But, it is what it is.
    So, would you, could you, recommend something like a R1200RT for a new(er) rider?

    • @husseinadil6290
      @husseinadil6290 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you heard about the suzuki burgman 650 executive? it's a large touring maxi scooter with a great weather protection, electrical windshield, very responsive and powerful engine coupled with a smart electronic CVT with the ability to ride it in manual transmission whenever you want plus the power mode when in auto, ABS, large storage areas, large wheels 15"F 14"R, electric mirrors for folding them when you want to, heated grips, and you can import the Canadian model which have the heated seat also.
      also it is friendly with your gas, it can go 50 mpg and can do 80 mph all day long with top speed of 110 mph.

  • @xlrik
    @xlrik 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review - couple of things to add - if you experience the "blind spot" in the mirrors then a good cure is bar raisers - it depends on your height and seat positioning but Wunderlich raisers are adjustable and you can find the right position to give good mirror view and good comfort.
    Also seat is wonderful until you are into 300 plus mile HOT days in which case it causes all sorts of problems (for me) fitting a comfort seat or a Seargent seat is a good investment.

  • @RoadcraftNottingham
    @RoadcraftNottingham  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes I think it was a twin. I agree with you on the protection point. It should be down to the rider to make sure the passenger is adequately protected.

    Hey Russ. Glad to see normal, objective service has been resumed! Regards the fuel: I've always run my 2006 R1200GS on the cheapest with no problems, although I suspect that the K&N and the full Remus system does help. And you've obviously got one of BM's better gearboxes. Stay safe, Si.

    I actually don't really like sports bikes, I get wrist ache. My ideal bike is something like my old Fazer or my current Tuono, sporty with some comfort. Never ridden the Yamaha but would if I got offered one to test. Glad you like the Riderscan, shows I was right lol

  • @RoadcraftNottingham
    @RoadcraftNottingham  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you checked out part one? Heated bits mentioned then. The impressions I give are from my point of view so fuel economy isn't important to me (I have a 30mpg Tuono so anything's good in comparison) I do these on the fly so sometimes forget to mention things.

  • @MaartensTravels
    @MaartensTravels 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Indeed, the RT handles very well. Despite its weight (260 kg fueled up), it handles like a lightweight bike.

  • @MaartensTravels
    @MaartensTravels 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The behaviour in low gears is indeed something that can become annoying after several minutes. You either need a very steady hand or slip the clutch. This kind of situation only occurs when driving through congestion downtown a major city during rush hour. The servo assisted brakes is something that you get used to after a while. I drive my RT a lot to work and such and can brake evenly smoothly with the front brakes as with the aft. You just need to get to know that servo assisted brake.

  • @opmike343
    @opmike343 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Modern brakes (assuming quality, multi-piston calipers and a good master) are strong enough to stand a bike up on the nose with a single finger while offering good modulation. Whoever told BMW their brakes need servo-assist needs to be slapped. It adds unnecessary complexity to a system that was once wonderfully simple and easy to service.

  • @RoadcraftNottingham
    @RoadcraftNottingham  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The last 2 days coming back from the shop I've thoroughly enjoyed the journey which is a great sign. I personally didn't like the VFR800 (although I owned two, can't say I don't give them a chance lol) The seat wasn't too comfy after a while, the FI was annoying at slow speed and the "VRRRRRRRRRRR" of the V4 irritated me. Apart from that it was fine lol. Sprint is nice but wrists ached after a bit. Try the BMW, see what you think.

    lol, 2 main reasons, 1, the F.I wasn't very good at low speeds and 2, the servo assisted brakes had no feel. Out in the countryside it was fantastic.

    Grand review Russ, not that I'm in the market for one. Must confess I got a little distracted by the two-up bike (twin of some sort - ER5? CB500?) off to your left, wondering if the pillion had enough protection. Sorry, poorly protected pillions is a thing with me.

    Great review as well as the first one! I know you primarily ride sport bikes, but have you ever critiqued a Yamaha 1900cc Stratoliner S series? That's what I have. By the way, watching your video and seeing the Riderscan Mirror made me order one from Stephen! Love it and it saved my deriere on several occasions! Thanks and keep up the good work mate! HR & Cheers!

    There's a sticker on the tank saying to use 98 RON fuel so the cheaper unleaded is 95, which makes sense. Glad I've won you back. Regarding the gearbox, maybe it's just me ;-) lol

    LOL I was just thinking to myself whether you'd manage to resist the lure of the screen!
    So, still a 'Pan' over the BMW? Or is the BMW catching-up? Very interesting for me as I'm currently looking for a Sports/Tourer for more '2-up' trips with SWMBO. I've tried the VFR800, the VFR1200, and the Triumph Sprint ST1050 (the favso far), Am wondering whether to try a Pan and the R1200RT - Not sure as their image causes me some 'discomfort' as well as having to justify the £££££ to myself.
