- Over a 1.5 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in London. That's the same as each of us throwing away 200 bags of sugar. Most of it goes to landfill because only around half of our councils collect food waste separately. In the third part of our series Dan Freedman has been finding out what's being done to try and solve the problem.
Some families genuinely starve yet we have a food wastage problem. It makes no sense.
Every year we waste 1.3 billion tonnes of food and it costs $690 billion to the world economy.

A surprising amount of uneaten food is thrown away in restaurants. It would be better if restaurants served smaller portions and undertake to add a second helping if required.
Why dont they put those food in open space so poor people can have. This tell a lot about society.
We need to donate unwanted food that is still edible to those that can’t afford to have meals.

While it's good that they're doing something positive with this, the problem stems from people who think that all this food is 'waste' in the first place. Come on people, learn how to cook - stew the apples for a snack or a pie filling (it takes 5 minutes), freeze the bananas to use in a smoothie, make banana bread, give them to your neighbours, advertise them on Olio, anything but put them in the bin. Yes, you do have the time! Please?
It’s the supermarkets, they bin it so their customers get “the best” products

Ever since I brought a juicer our household food waste has been reduced dramatically.
Juice fruit and veg it’s taste fine if it’s nearly going off. We got our juicer for £70 on Amazon.
When bananas are browning make banana bread. It takes 10 mins and it’s absolutely delicious.
share the food to poor before it gets decomposed or preserve it and give to the poor
Any unwanted food gets given to the wildlife where i live so i feel i am helping and not adding to this mountain of food waste // people are starving this makes me so mad xxx

I guess people in london didn't know how it feels like to be hungry and there's no food available to their likings...
Have you ever been to London 30 percent of people are extremely poor and struggle to even live and 60 percent of people struggle with the prices and lots of people use food banks and benefits.
Those poor souls in African and othet third world countries that could have benefit those tons of food.
Not all people in Africa are starving (yeah there r people who r starving but there r also people who r not starving) it's a myth that every people on the African *continent* is begging for food.
I think everywhere there are those higher souls who try really hard not to make easier access of anything easy

The food that gets wasted is mostly from shops why can't they put a law called waste not want not where they can give the food from stores to the lowest income groups that's about to go off they would need prove of benefits to get it or earn less than 9000 pounds
It's rare that councils collect waste food unfortunately
How is it food was going to to waiste why could they not put it out on tables over night for poor people to collect for free rather than on the floor as trash or used for composed

Why is wasted at first place??? I thought Londoner are highly educated people... People are dieing with hunger even in the UK. Look around the increasing food banks.
Food waste can be pre consumers ( vegetables scraps ) and post consumer (uneaten food from plaits ) and “spoiled” food. Only third one can be used to feed people . I’m composting vegetable scraps with worms but you can feed chickens or pigs with them. Best option for post consumer waste is digester and methane production.
