  • We visited one of the most advanced recycling centres in the UK to learn more about recycling. Southwark Recycling centre is committed to carbon reduction. Only one percent of the waste goes to the landfill!
Have you ever wondered what happens to your empty tins or yogurt cups after they get picked up from your recycling bin? To find out, we visited Veolia’s Southwark Recycling Centre, and spoke with their Director of Sustainable Technology to learn about the DOs and DON’Ts of recycling, covering everything from wish-cycling, to the issue of soft plastics like cling film, and more!

    Great job Veolia!
Smart companies, like Veolia, organized communities and aligned government policy with AI robotics will expedite turning the tide on trash.
We're excited because this here is an example of how we now can roll out our renewable WtE innovation project.

Developing a program to reduce contamination in plastic recycling is crucial to produce high-quality recyclate suitable for drink storage. Here's a multi-step program to achieve this:
    1. Education and Awareness:
    - Educate consumers about proper plastic recycling practices.
    - Raise awareness about the impact of contamination on plastic recycling.
    2. Improved Sorting and Collection:
    - Implement advanced sorting technologies (e.g., optical scanners, AI-powered sorting).
    - Enhance collection infrastructure to separate plastics by type.
    3. Cleaning and Processing:
    - Develop efficient cleaning systems to remove contaminants (e.g., labels, caps, residue).
    - Implement advanced processing technologies (e.g., shredding, pelletizing).
    4. Quality Control:
    - Establish strict quality control measures to detect and remove contaminants.
    - Implement regular testing and monitoring to ensure high-quality recyclate.
    5. Closed-Loop Production:
    - Collaborate with drink manufacturers to design packaging with recyclability in mind.
    - Ensure recycled plastic meets food-grade standards for drink storage.
    6. Certification and Standards:
    - Establish industry-wide certification programs for plastic recyclers.
    - Develop and enforce standards for plastic recycling and recyclate quality.
    7. Research and Development:
    - Continuously invest in R&D to improve recycling technologies and processes.
    - Explore new technologies and materials to enhance recyclability and sustainability.
    8. Policy and Regulation:
    - Advocate for policies and regulations supporting plastic recycling and recyclability.
    - Encourage extended producer responsibility and product design for recyclability.
    9. Collaboration and Partnerships:
    - Foster partnerships among plastic recyclers, drink manufacturers, and suppliers.
    - Encourage knowledge sharing, best practices, and joint innovation.
    10. Continuous Monitoring and Improvement:
    - Regularly assess and refine the program to address emerging challenges and opportunities.
    - Encourage consumer feedback and participation in the recycling process.
By implementing this comprehensive program, we can significantly reduce contamination in plastic recycling, produce high-quality recyclate, and ensure the safe use of recycled plastic for drink storage.

Most people don't know the difference between paper.plastic and metal. So they keep putting the wrong items wrong bins.We are way behind other European countries in how we recycle things.

I’d love to know more about where these bales go - how are they being transformed and where ! It’s a great feeling to put more in your recycling bin than general waste but then you see images of these bales being shipped to the third world and it’s v disheartening

yeah I work for Grass roots and we do the same thing but with farm waste, these bales get sold off or you can put them through a wash plant and shred them into pieces and then it constantly gets washed and washed until it's small gell pellets that then get put into machine that puts it back into a plastic bottle or whatever you want.

At the end of the day we need to stop using plastic as much as we possibly can, buy items that are not packaged in it, buys items made from other materials. Not always easy, I know, but that is the answer.

It's all bulls... there are different types of plastic, recyclable and non-recyclable, people get them all mixed up as nearly nobody pays attention to small number inside recycling sign which indicates how easy it is to recycle it, only type 1,2 are widely recycled, rest is only recyclable in certain sites or non recyclable at all and who is going to spend millions to sort this whole shit out? Only 13% gets recycled because they don't want to waste money on sorting and recycling it, and want to make money producing more and selling... @@djpepi2912 it's not all BS. you're correct, there is many types of plastic. where I work we shred down the plastic and put into a wash plant that then washes and washes it and shreds it down into small gel/pellets that then get put into a injection process and gets put back into plastic bottles etc. most of them bales though are bought and then they do what i mentioned, but other companies do the recycling, transforming it into bottles and that again...if you want to see that in action, just google it lol
