  • STIHL M-Tronic Engine Management System is designed to make sure that your petrol tool delivers an optimum performance, all day, every day, by making automatic adjustments to regulate the fuel and air mix to the machine.
    There are a couple of instances where you may need to reset the STIHL M-Tronic technology on your machine. If you carry out any work on the fuel system, such as changing a solenoid valve, replacing or cleaning a carburettor or even just replacing an old fuel filter, you will need to do an M-Tronic reset. If you find that the chainsaw isn’t running as expected (for example, not revving to its full potential), it is always worth resetting your machine as this may offer a quick and simple resolution.
    There are two methods to reset a petrol machine with STIHL M-Tronic as there have been a number of new and improved versions of M-Tronic launched over the years.
    Method 1 is for petrol machines with STIHL M-Tronic technology 2.0 or lower, and Method 2 for Machines with M-Tronic 2.1 or higher. It’s easy to tell which version you have by looking at the C-E label. Machines with M-Tronic 2.1 or higher are shown on the label highlighted here. If it’s not marked on the C-E label as M2.1 or M3.0, then it is likely you have an older version of M-Tronic technology.
    When using a STIHL chainsaw, even just for an M-Tronic reset, you should always wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment.
    🔶 STIHL PPE: www.stihl.co.uk/STIHL-Product...
    🔶 Method 1 for STIHL M-Tronic re-set: 🔶
    1. Remove the scabbard
    2. Put the machine in the ▲ Cold start position
    3. Start the machine and run it in the ▲ Cold start position for at least 90 seconds
    4. Do not touch the throttle or accelerate the chainsaw during this time
    5. After 90 seconds, switch off the machine
    6. Your machine is now re-calibrated and ready for operation
    🔶 Method for resetting STIHL M-Tronic 2.1 or higher: 🔶
    1. Remove the scabbard
    2. Ensure the chain brake is on
    3. Put the machine in the ▲ Cold start position
    4. Start the machine and run it in the ▲ Cold start position for at least 30 seconds but no more than 60 seconds
    5. Do not touch the throttle or accelerate the chainsaw during this time
    6. Turn off the chain brake
    7. Squeeze the throttle fully for at least 30 seconds
    8. Engine speed varies noticeably during calibration
    9. As soon as the engine speed drops noticeably, release the throttle
    10. When the engine is back to idle speed, put the chain brake on and switch off your chainsaw
    11. Your chainsaw is now calibrated and ready for operation
    Always double check your Instruction Manual to make sure you are following the right reset procedure - you can find copies of STIHL Instruction Manuals at stihl.co.uk.

    Does this apply to the Stihl FS410 Clearing saw/Brush cutter. Mine is of 2014 vintage and it won't rev up at all. It doesn't have a spark arrestor so I presume it's a carb problem.

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for your comment. M-Tronic was introduced to the FS 410 in 2016 so won’t feature on your 2014 machine. This could be a carb related issue, or may also be due to the condition of the filters or fuel. We recommended taking your machine to a STIHL approved dealer who will be able to advise on the cause and offer a repair. Thanks, STIHL GB

      Hi, thanks for your comment. You shouldn't need to perform a reset in those circumstances. You should generally do it just when changing a component within the machine, but if you feel that the machine isn't performing as intended, you can try a reset then as well. Thanks, STIHL GB

    Hi, I Like your proper explanation how to reset a mtronic, but my chainsaw doesn't run at idle because I need to reset. But how can I reset the chainsaw if it doesn't idle, it only runs while you open the throttle.(half to full)
    I think it has run on low fuel. So the mtronic has prevented an air leak, by raising the mixture level?
    Please help.
    What to do now???

    I have a MS441C-M and wonder when I do this reset, per the correct revision, how often does this need to be done? Does it matter if I use the saw and then don’t use it for a month or two? Is there any reason to do a reset special as for if changing a muffler or air filter type? Thank you.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. You only need to do an M-Tronic reset if you change a component such as carb or solenoid. Alternatively, if you have a running issue, it’s also worth trying an M-Tronic reset to see if that will fix it. Thanks, STIHL GB

      Hi, thank you for your comment. Yes, once the engine is calibrated it is ready for operation. During the 30 seconds you are holding the throttle trigger down you will notice that the engine speed varies noticeably while it is calibrating.
      As soon as the engine speed drops noticeably, let go of the throttle trigger and the engine should run at idling speed. Your saw is calibrated and ready for use. We hope that helps, STIHL GB

It seems to be a common issue that the original modules for black solenoids will not operate a white solenoid. Where can one find such information ? (what modules work with which solenoids, and what procedure is used for which module ? ) Many thanks for responding. It is early morning, and I haven't reached my peak level of articulate communication, Sorry if I am unclear, please feel free to ask questions. Also, I only use OEM Stihl parts for everything.

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomasgronek6469 Hi Thomas, the original black solenoid valves had polymer valve seats. These have been replaced with a green valve (0000 120 5111) which is more dust resistant due to having a metal valve seat. White valves are included on the latest M-Tronic machines; however these cannot be used to replace a black or green valve due to a difference in specification.
      We don’t recommend changing control modules, so the reset process depends on the M-Tronic version (2.0, 2.1, 3.0) displayed on your chainsaw. STIHL Approved dealers have full access to parts and compatibility information, so if your saw is still having running issues we recommend taking it to a dealer for inspection. Thanks, STIHL GB

      @@STIHLGB Thanks, but that doesn't help when I'm in the middle of nowhere, and there are no dealers. I have had trouble with the information Stihl provides about the electronics, and as time passes, many of these saws will become obsolete as a result. The used saws will be worthless without this info, as one never knows whether the version on the label (which no longer exists), is a true reflection of what control module is in the machine, or what solenoid is in the machine. To the best of my knowledge, the green solenoid is no longer used in the United States due to failure, and that left the only option I had, which was to change to the white solenoid, and a compatible module. The next step will be a change-over to standard carb and coil, or I WILL switch to Husqvarna or Echo equipment. Sad to say, most of the Stihl owners I know have already done that. Unless Stihl makes the information available, the company will lose a lot of loyal customers.

      @STIHLGB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for your comment. You need to look on the label of the front handle where it will say the version of M-Tronic which is on the machine, just like in the video (at around 1.02 minutes). The MS 241 C-M you have is very likely to be version 2.0. We don’t offer updates to M-Tronic systems on our chainsaws and the current MS 241 is still working with version 2.0. Thanks, STIHL GB

      @@STIHLGB mine is working fine after I cleaned the spark arrester. Why doesn’t Stihl provide firmware updates, like Husqvarna? I treat all my saws the same, generally and none of my other saws had completely blocked spark arrestors. They all are fed the same fuel, too. Iran Stihl Ultra at 50:1 with PNE gas. In all-of my equipment until January 2021, at which time I switched to Echo Red Armor at 50:1 with the same gas. Ultra is a filthy running oil. I never had a failure with it but it leaves a lot of ash unless you run the saw wide open all the time. I could not believe that Stihl does not produce a JASO FD certified oil, instead of an FB certified oil, which is an early 2000’s certification. FD is a so much better oil than FB, better lubrication and much cleaner burning.

      Hi @@johnclarke6647 STIHL HP Super is a JASO-FD certified engine oil, however it doesn’t look like this is available in the US unfortunately. As you can see this doesn’t put us in a great position to give you reliable advice on this topic, however STIHL US or your nearest STIHL dealer will be glad to help.
