  • Welcome! In this video I troubleshoot why the brake light on the trunk, sometimes called the third tail light or third brake light was not working. I walk through the troubleshooting, then the removal and repair. The information in the video should be valid for any 2009-2012 Ford Fusion.
    I'd also like to note that license plates are public data in the state of Florida, which is why I didn't try to fuzz it out.

      I have the same car buddy and I want to ask you how can I locate the light of the globe compartment ???

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not familiar with the term globe compartment. Can you tell me where in the car you would find it?

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually need to revisit this as well. I didn't do a good job cleaning the corrosion off the contacts for the light and it conked out again. I now have a set of files that work great for cleaning contacts so I should be able to fix it for good this time.

      Oh! You must have meant glove compartment. I can take a look and see how you would get to the light.

      I went and took a look at my glove box today. At my trim level it doesn't have a light that I can see.

    Guessing same issue here as I have water intrusion. Going to try this first before even thinking of dropping over $100 for new light. Thanks!

      If you catch it early enough it will work. I'm about to replace the high mount brake light because the leds in the light bar are burning out one by one. Best of luck!

      I will be making a follow up video to this one that will be more complete. The LED lights are burning out from the water damage so I'm going to have to replace the entire strip with a new one.

    So I have a Mercury Milan with the same year and I’m not sure why the brake lights aren’t working. I noticed a connector that was just handing by the middle button of the trunk not sure if that is important..any clue?

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not familiar with anything that was added to the Milan as Mercury is supposed to be a bit more of a luxury line than Ford. However, if you don't have brake lights you can do some basic troubleshooting and see where that takes you:
      1. Is it brakes and tail lights, or just brakes?
      2. Are the fuses for brakes and/or tail lights good?
      3. If fuses are good, use a multimeter to check power at the light bulb connector. Is there power?
      4. If no power, you have a broken wire or splice between the fuse and the connector
      5. If power, check the bulbs. Are the smoked in color, do they have broken filiments?
      Another thing to check specific to brakes is the Brake On/Off Switch(BOO). It is normally mounted on the brake pedal. If this switch is not working the brake lights will not turn on.

      @@MazdaB3K Ok I will give this diagnostics a test. I am sure this is probably a fuse situation. The tailights work fine its jus the brake lights that wont turn on. When I step on the break switch the taillights react but kind of dim. For the wires and connectors...I haven't really went too deep but they look fine. Thanks for the reply.

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the brake lights are working but dim, that sounds like potentially a fuse (electricity is taking a different path to the bulbs and not enough voltage is getting there) or a dirty ground somewhere.

    Any tips on how to get the black nuts off of the bolts? My socket can grab the nut and turn it counterclockwise but it won't spin off of the bolt no matter how many times i turn the ratchet. The bolt end actually seems to turn with the nut but when I turn right to tighten it, it will eventually tighten to a stop.

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, the stud is spinning with the bolt. What I did is jam some locking pliers (vice grips) onto a non-threaded part of the stud and that allowed me to get the nut off. I probably used needle-nose locking pliers.

      @@MazdaB3K Thank you for the advice. I will definitely give that a try.
      In addition to discovering water inside the light housing and a gunky connector, I found that one of the pins to the light housing broke off and is stuck in the connector so I'll have to get a new one before installing the new light.
      Other than that, once I can get those nuts off I can complete the repair thanks to your video.

      Most any ford parts website should have this light for sale. You should also be able to visit the website of your local parts house (Autozone, O'Riely's, Advance Autoparts, etc). Ford part houses I like to use is QuirkParts and Tasca Ford parts.

    would have liked some instruction to remove the light assembly.

    • @MazdaB3K
      @MazdaB3K  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair point. As I said in the video, I first thought this would be a very fast fix, not worthy of filming. 30 minutes later... that's where the video starts, which is why the 3rd brake light is already out. I do verbally give instruction on the removal, but that is never as good as actually seeing the footage. I seem to remember for this one there were two sets of fasteners that had to come out. One set was for the brake light itself, but the brake light was also attached to the silver panel directly below it with the Ford emblem on it. Once you loosened all the fastners, the whole assembly comes out and you can separate and work on it from there. I am happy to say the repair has stuck and the light still works. If I need to do it again I'll soak the connectors in vinegar to get the corrosion off, since that was the issue in my case.
