Review: 2005 BMW 330Ci ZHP (Manual)

  • I review the 2005 BMW 330Ci ZHP with the 6-speed manual transmission. These are great cars, all of the M3 suspension compenents without the M3 engine, these cars are a lot of fun! What do you think about this car? Would you rather have this or an M3?

      I have an '04 Sedan 6MT and I've driven many things but I think it's a solid candidate for the best DD ever made. Comfortable, practical, responsive, reasonable to insure and fuel, and quick enough in the real world.
      I have just shy of 198,000 miles on mine and I don't think I'll ever sell it. One of the last of a breed a pure drivers' cars that actually work in the real world.

      Jourdan Johnson it is reliable, mine is at 230k miles and still goin. If you have a leak fix it. Do frequent oil changes. And don’t let it over heat. Most parts last 30k to 100k miles depending on how you drive it. Either way 30k for me is more than two years of driving. 😆
      Also I recommend OEM because the parts really do last longer. Just look up the manufacture for the oem BMW parts and it is cheaper to buy it from them instead of BMW. Sometimes you pay 4 times the amount for the same part with a BMW logo on it.

    This review makes me feel good about my car, I have a e46 325i 5 speed and it's just such a blast to drive, had the car for about 2 years and has not given me any major problems. All of my friends think I'm rich for owning one but like Matt said, you can find one at a great price these days and they are solid well built cars.

    - Engine mods (new camshafts, electronics, & lighter flywheel) for 10HP & 8 ft/lb of torque increase & 6800 max RPM (from 6500).
    - 6 speed short throw shifter (for manual transmission equipped cars)
    - 3.07:1 Final drive ratio w/ manual trans instead of the standard 2.91:1. Convertibles retained the already installed 3.07 ratio.
    - Max Speed Limiter set to 155 mph (instead of 128)
    - New M suspension, more "sporty" than standard sport package:
    Firmer springs (front +6%, rear +8%)
    There are no "ZHP" specific springs. The same springs are used for comparably equipped 330's for both the ZSP and the ZHP. In both cases, the spring rate for the post 4/01 build ZSP and ZHP is believed to be slightly less than that of the pre-4/01 ZSP
    Firmer shocks (Jounce: front +50%, rear +20%), (Rebound: front +35%, rear -8%)
    ZHP does use different dampers than the ZSP. There is a shortage of shock dyno data, but based on the SACHS damping parameter values it is believe the jounce damping is the same but rebound damping is stiffer on the ZHP. Pre-4/01 sport package cars had similar damping values to the ZHP but used the higher grade SACHS "Advantage" dampers rather than the "Super Touring" model
    Larger diameter anti-roll bars: 23.5 mm front (v. 23.0), 18.5 mm rear (v. 18.0)
    Sway bar diameters are 23.5 mm and 18.0 mm for all post 4/01 build 330's. There is no 18.5 mm rear sway bar offered by BMW for the E46.
    More rigid forward bushings
    Front Control arm bushings are the same ZHP/ZSP
    ZHP control arms are different and use a stiffer ball joint
    Lower ride height by 15 mm (.6 inches) utilizing shorter auxiliary springs
    Since both the ZSP and ZHP use the same springs, they have the same ride height. Both are 15mm lower than a non-sport E46
    -.5 degrees of camber (for a total of -1.1 degrees)
    Alignment settings are the same ZSP and ZHP

    Thank you for the time you took in making this video I found a great 2006 zhp with 78k miles. based on your review and another on youtube I decided to pull the trigger. After contacting Braxton auto repair (indie bmw,audi,volvo) repair shop I asked them for their recommendation in terms of the balance of performance and reliability and hands down they opted for the 330i over the m3 not that it is a better car but for reliability and cost of ownership which is very important to me as I am on a budget.. I did love love love the m3
    I test drove but it was 5k more. maybe next time this will be my first bmw, thanks again I will be doing my own review once I get to know her more.

    Nice BMW, Great video. I really like how you talk about all 3 series instead of the ZHP specifically because THEY have the same Feel and power etc so you give the idea that all E46's have identical feeling which is true and touch on the specific ZHP E46. Subbed, great video! E46's are Fantastic cars.

    Not entirely correct there, If you want M3 performance, get an M3, this is a fast car but M3 is in a different league. M3 has almost 100 more horses

    • @kdu8004
      @kdu8004 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is a different league. The ZHP though has better steering than the m3 and feels more composed at the limit than the m3 and therefore is more fun than the M3 in the twisty stuff.

    I had the convertible version of this in the same color scheme. Loved it! Big difference in feel from the non ZHP, which I have also owned. It feels a lot like the M3 perhaps the difference is more apparent on the track though. Only thing I disagree with that he said is the stereo system, Harmon or not, sucks. My Passat monsoon blew this stereo away. I sold to my Dad thinking I would get this car back one day, but sadly he recently totaled it. He loved it too and is trying to buy a replacement. I've been hooked on the straight six since my first car which was an Austin Healey.

  • @peterburt2905
    @peterburt2905 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for reviewing this car for us mate. I'd love to find A ZHP in GOOD condition. I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat but to be honest, by now so many E46s have been owned by complete knobs that it's getting hard to find really good examples. People buy them and then maintain them like a Toyota. I have a Toyota and I have an E46 and there's a huge difference in what each will tolerate!
    "No screens or anything like that". Hmmm. I know exactly what you're saying and I have to admit that one of the reasons I was drawn to an E46 was the interior look. I really do like the way mine looks with the black, all leather and the simple silver trim. However, I found the lack of connectivity in the car with the good old BMW Business system was a definite downside in a daily driver in 2015. As a result, I've installed an E46 specific after market unit (Eonon GA5150F running android kitkat 4.4.4 on a 7" touch screen). Despite losing some of that pleasing austere interior look and, sadly, some sound quality I find the pros of a modern Nav/Audio unit do outweigh the cons. If you're not sitting for 2 hours in a car every day you go to work it might not really matter to you but for those who do, it might just be worth looking at updating this part of these cool little cars.

    Having driven e46 base, zsp, and zhp models the zhp is a cut above the rest. It has significantly less body roll than the base and zsp and has better throttle characteristics, clutch feel, and shorter shifter. The zhp i believe also come standard with offset 18s which are a bitch to clean, but look good. They come with the M54 3ltr engine, which is relatively reliable, and super smooth. Couldnt want more in a daily.

    I have a 06 330ci mystic blue on gray leather zhp with a manual. Got it last September for 16500 with 62k miles. Absolutely fantastic car and incredible value IMO. Only added alcantara shift boot, parking brake boot, and console cover. Going to keep it as long as I can and will eventually add a LSD and super charger. One roommate had a 07 335i coupe at the time and the zhp was much better feel without the IMO very dated interior of the e36. I'm in love :)

    You nailed it. I own a 2006 330Ci ZHP and it is the perfect blend of performance / comfort without too much power that will get you in trouble. However I must say that the suspension is definitely not identical to the M3. It has a wonderful suspension but the M3 definitely has a wider stance (obviously) and different suspension components. I have heard from some enthusiasts that have driven both that the ZHP actually has a better steering rack (feel) than the M3 but I can't comment on that.

    I have a 2006 330cic ZHP. The car has the most comfortable seats with that wonderful thigh extension. The car looks great for a 10-year old vehicle. It's handling is amazing. OK, it's not a M3, but it is far from slow. Reviews indicate that the ZHP covers 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. From 30mph to 75mph for highway approaches even with the shiftable- automatic, the ZHP is plenty fast. The car tracks beautifully and corners effortlessly. With the top down, the car looks fantastic. These days, you can buy a ZHP for between $8k-$12K depending on mileage and condition. If I had one complaint, it's the ever-glowing warning lights including check engine that comes on when the gas cap isn't secure (like a Porsche), the lower tire warning light that misreads tire pressure height, and the sensitive washer warning light which seems to have a mind of its own. As for collectibility, for me the juror is out on that. If you've never driven this limited edition model and want a sports car with a back seat, the ZHP is for you. Park the ZHP next to a mid-size car and you'll realize just how small the BMW actual is.

      No, renewer, it's a full Alcantara interior (which is made of treated cotton), which looks & feels like suede, without the maintenance & the exploitation/murder of the animal. I own one of these, & it's spectacular. The only other car I've ever found with a full Alcantara interior is the Koenigsegg Agera, which is impractical & costs millions...I don't know why other cars don't offer it too...including BMW, the last of which was the 2006 ZHP!

    Very good review. I agree with all of your points. Great car and reasonably priced. I think it's becoming a collectors car, with the prices lagging behind. The only thing that keeps this car from rated high as a collectors car is that there are a lot of E46 M3 which are the same cars but better.

    • @mrcupcalling
      @mrcupcalling 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clubsport was only in certain parts of Europe, just had a different spoiler and Schnitzer alloys. I think the closet we had to the ZHP was the 330ci M-Sport. The car driven is actually in Imola red, that colour was available on all E46s, least in Europe, and the face/body lift was actually added in 2002. Always thought this car looked better than the M3 as the M didn't get the face/body lift, perhaps that was intentional so it really stood out. And yes, BMW have really lost their way, esp with the new 4, more of a baby 6 as apposed to a new 3, the 2 series is more similar to the 3. But as long as I can get a low mileage E46, that what I'll be driving

    I have to say I agree on this. Like to be honest I do enjoy the review itself without this suggestion but maybe if he adds in a little of this spice it would be better. But overall great video and I ///M a fan of BMW. LOL :)

    Great reviews! The only one complain is about sound. Very loud intro, then quiet exterior review, and then loud sound indoors. and while driving too much of wind noise. equalize your sound while editing your video and buy an external mic plz)

    The color is Imola Red, Available on all BMW models in this generation. The suspension differs in many ways. I currently own both a 2004 ZHP 330CI and a 2002 M3. Road feel is very different between the vehicles, and no, its not the rim sizes that would effect it as they are both running the 18 inch m3 stock rims. The ZHP is a fun car, but it lacks the characteristics of a true performance car like the M3 is. The suspension is just slightly better than a base 330ci as the ZHP is a package, the suspension is just the sport suspension.

      Why do you still have the ZHP now that you have an M3, shouldn't you start selling your ZHP, I'm just curious.

    BMW made the zhp with a different set a cams, gives the car about 10 more ponies than any other 330.

    Also in the ZHP package the engine has a little bit higher lift camshafts.

    You could say "Almost M3 handling, it doesn't have the LSD, and is harder to find." All of the suspension components are different from the M3. The ZHP offers different front control arms, a closer steering ratio 2.5 lock to lock compared to 3 in the standard 330i. The Differential is also a higher ratio I believe 3.38 compared to 3.18 (going by memory). @Subaruwrxfan I would like to see what cons you find in your reviews. We want to hear what is bad and if the pros overwhelm the cons.
