  • Oscillating PEP (positive expiratory pressure) is an airway clearance technique that moves mucus up the airways and creates vibrations when you breathe out. This video takes you through the different steps in performing oscillating PEP.

    VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Oscillating PEP is similar to PEP therapy as it pushes mucus up the airways and also creates vibrations when you are breathing out. A breath hold is used to promote airflow between the air sacs. The vibrations help to shake up the mucus in the lungs. People mention that they can feel
the vibrations in their throat and chest area as they breathe out. The device used in the
video is called the Acapella Choice Blue.
Start with five belly breaths. In through your nose and out through your mouth, in the shape of an O. Remember to place your hand over your belly to feel your stomach rise into your hands. Perform about five of these breaths. Keep them nice and relaxed.
In five. Sitting up nice and tall, elbows supported on a table, take a breath in through your acapella and hold it for one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, and blowout.
Feel the vibrations in your chest. In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out.
Make sure you take medium-sized breaths and do about 10 to 15 of these breaths.
Make sure that the rocker arm is fluttering well. [sound of machine fluttering]
In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out. [sound of machine fluttering]
In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out. [sound of machine fluttering]
In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out.
In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out. [sound of machine fluttering]
In one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, out.
After your last breath, pick up a tissue and perform two to three huffs with a big open mouth, followed by a cough and a spit into the Kleenex.

This was very useful in practicing this technique prior to my cardiorespiratory practical exam. So thank you!
