  • Henleys Medical Supplies is the UK distributor for Acapella® Vibratory PEP Device.
The Acapella® is a ready-to-use small hand-held device that combines the resistive features of the positive expiratory pressure of a PEP valve and the vibratory features of a flutter valve to mobilize secretions in the airway. A resistive pressure device works by sing a pressurized breath to splint open the airway. Vibratory devices work by using oscillating vibrations that travel into the lungs, shaking free mucus plugs that the patient
can cough up. With a pressurized breath and a vibratory effect, the Acapella® enables additional air to enter into the airways, get behind secretions, improve cough effectiveness and help push secretions out. The Acapella®, like PEP and flutter, is a better alternative to chest percussion and postural drainage because it requires far less therapist time, and can be utilized in patients unable to tolerate CPT & PD.
The Acapella® uses a counterweighted plug and magnet directs exhaled air through a pivoting cone, to generate airflow vibrations between 0-30 Hz. Both the vibration frequencies and the resistive pressures are adjustable (see diagram). The Acapella® removes many technique-ependent variables in this type of therapy. Patients as young as 4 years old, can be instructed for self care with acapella as part of an overall secretion management program.
Acapella® easily allows for simultaneous administration of bronchodilators by attaching a nebulizer to the distal end. Aerosol drug delivery can be performed during therapy for secretion clearance and atelectasis.
    Indications:
    1. To aid in mobilizing retained secretions as observed in cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, and pneumonia.
    2. To prevent or reverse atelectasis.
    3. To optimize delivery of Bronchodilator in patients receiving bronchial hygiene therapy.

I am end stage COPD/emphysema. The green flutter device does work when used correctly. I received mine while in hospital. It was tossed at me. No instructions. I found out later that the way I was using it was dangerous. I told therapist I was feeling tremendous pressure in my skull and she just laughed. Now I have to figure out how much resistance I need. It does move the gunk around so it can be coughed up. I do wonder about blood specks in it though.

I'm wondering this too on the Acepella DH 😔 I can NOT find any videos or instructions on cleaning it. (Except showing how to move out the clear mouth piece). Could someone advice us on how to clean the green (DH) from either Smith's Medical or anyone else reading this? It would be greatly appreciated! Kellienice@gmail.com
      Thanks!

Video is not clear on several things. I realize this is posted by an Acapella Distributor, Henleys, but you aren't doing a service to our company by having so many contradictory bits of info in the video you are posting. 1) I don't understand what the "cleaning" process does if you then follow up with disinfecting on a daily basis. Seems like the disinfecting would handle all the cleaning. Furthermore, this video says disinfect daily, the booklet that comes with Acapella Choice says disinfect WEEKLY. 2) In the video it says the Acapella CAN be placed in the dishwasher and can be boiled. In the written instructions I got from my doctor, it says it CANNOT be boiled or put in the dishwasher. Contradictory information. 3) The manual that comes with the Acapella Choice says you can CLEAN the device using the dishwasher in "sanitation" setting. This video says you can SANITIZE the unit using a dishwasher, top rack, in Normal clean mode. Both contradictory explanations. 4) Why does this only last 6 months. That is disappointing to learn.

I couldn't get it apart, even with a screwdriver and moderate coercion. Looking at it, it's pretty flow-through. Flush with hot water, then submerse it in boiling water.

Per this video, I boiled my Acepella for 5 minutes to sterilize it. The process deformed the mouthpiece and inner workings. It is now totally useless. I am so disappointed because it did help me to cough up phlegm.
