This was so helpful. I recently purchased a boat with this exact motor and was perplexed by my tachometer not working. After a while I started to notice the battery sounded weak and I noticed the voltmeter registering low. I stumbled on your video and was shocked to see the exact symptoms on the exact same motor. I changed the coils with your helpful video. The coils were fried and the new coils fixed it all. Thank you from Minnesota!

Thanks for the video has helped me with my current issue on my bf40 (not coil related).
Just thought I might add another quick way to check your charging coils is to measure the resistance across the two coil wires whilst disconnected. According to the workshop manual you should read 0.20 - 0.26 ohm.

I replaced my charge coil a couple of years ago. It burned up because of a short in my radio while the engine was running. I had a 10 amp fuse for the radio which was too big. It now has a 2 amp fuse. The coil was easy to change. Good video. BTW, I have the same kicker motor as you, as well.

Tighten to 48 ft-lb in a criss cross pattern in 3 incremental steps.
    (65 Nm= 48 ft-lb)

I think I need to change the change coil on my 2014 bf 50.. so your video was great to watch and has given me the confidence to tackle it...How did you check that it wasnt the rectifier that was the problem.. I would like to check mine before I order parts obviously.. from Stratford upon Avon, England.

I've got a Honda BF 50 outboard with zero spark? Wonder if that's what I need to do? Or is there a stator involved here to?

My battery is not charging, but the tach works. If the tach works is the problem the Rectifier ?

About your Honda charging problem, yes I would figure the Regulator/Rectifier is the problem. Also check the fuse mounted on the starter motor, if this is blown you will get no charging current. Also, find the 2 grey wires coming from under the flywheel (under the big black wire cover), unplug them and check them for AC voltage with the engine idling, maybe 50VAC. If you get good voltage your rectifier is most likely the culprit. Hope this helps - Cheers!~ Bellarmine

Video was very helpful but he forgot to giver the proper torque settings for the 4 bolts when re-installing the flywheel. Please add if you can.
