    How cold do the Temps get there when the Frost appears?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The colds usually hover around 27°F for several days of the week.
      Specific to this year, I’ve noticed frost appearing when it hits 33°F in early December.

      Thanks for the reply - I am in the New Grow Zone 9a, I guess it would be safe to plant my Ruby Supreme Guava in the Ground come this Summer?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although my colds generally do not drop below 26°F, I’m unsure if the Ruby Supreme guava can take the low 20°s.
      That said, my Ruby Supreme guava now matured, is barely affected by the frost.
      If you’re able to protect it the first or second years, I would imagine it may be okay going forward.

    I have Tropic Pink guava, the fruits are not sweet. Pls suggest a fertilizer to add so we get sweet ones.

    • @TropicalCentralValley

      I find guava trees can alternate between years. Some years, the fruits can be very sweet and other years, the fruits can be a bit bland. This process is beyond our control.
      With guava trees, give them as much sun as possible in the summer time. Water regularly. Unfortunately, there’s really not much you can do to organically make the tree produce sweeter fruits.
      This year, I actually took out 4 of my in ground guava tree as their fruits weren’t tasty. Instead, I will be putting something I feel tastes better in their place.

      What do they taste like?

      I don’t know if I can describe the taste of guava beyond that it is sweet and fragrant.

    Just started to do this with some special seeds from Mexico hope they come true to parents because those were the sweetest guavas I ever had

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Guavas, I find can alternate in taste year after year. For instance, my Tropical White can be massive in size, but not as sweet. Other years, they can be smaller in size, but extra sweet.

    What soil mix do you back fill the guavas with? Native soil backfill with worm castings/compost/mulch on top after backfilling?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If growing in ground, I do incorporate worm casting, compost and other organic nutrients.
      Guava trees aren’t too picky. My general mixture is 40% peat moss, 40% sand and 20% potting soil, with a generous topping of mulch as dressing.

      @@TropicalCentralValley Thanks! Guavas were some of the first plants I tried to grow in-ground and I was worried I planted them wrong (used 1/3 native 2/3 planting mix). They have only grown about 1 ft in 1 yr but are constantly putting out flowers and setting fruit. Yours seem to have grown 5 ft in 1 yr. Do your pineapple guavas also grow this much in a year?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I should clarify, the mixture I mentioned is added to half native soil.
      Guava trees seem to do little in the first few years, as it focuses on root establishment. Typically after year 3, the tree takes off and starts fruiting in year 4 or 5.
      Pineapple guavas do need a good size to its trunk before it’ll set fruit. Mine has yet to set fruit and the tree is about 6 feet tall.

      Low 20’s. In fact, on 2/4/2020, it’s forecasted to be 28 degrees and 26 degrees on 2/5/2020.

    So inspiring. Do you treat all your guavas the same? I'm in Fresno and have a new Thai white guava (smooth skin and crunchy). It is near a wall facing east. Do I need to provide a shade cloth during the hot months and a shelter during the cold winter months?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s great. Guavas do not need any shade or frost protection, even when young.
      When young, make sure to keep the soil moist to the touch (not wet). Guavas basically become deciduous trees for the first 2-3 years then they stop defoliating as they mature.

    Whats the minimum size container you would recommend I grow a guava in??

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It ultimately depends on the current size of the guava tree. The container should be large enough for root expansion for a few years and be upsized when need to.
      Bear in mind, depending on the guava type in question, guava trees grow fairly quickly.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have several Pearl, Thai and Crystal guava trees currently bearing fruit that are in 5-7 gallon containers. Although each tree has about 12 fruits on them, once fruited, each tree will be upsized to 25 gallon containers. This is likely their “permanent” home.
