Ingestion of THC leads to the metabolite 11-HO-THC, which is a much more potent molecule which has a longer half-life. It takes longer for this to get out of the system than regular THC. Little to no 11-HO-THC is created when THC is inhaled.

Benzodiazepines will cure a hangover as well. So definitely you are correct. It's not just dehydration.
