Intermittent Fasting

  • The concept of Intermittent Fasting seems to be the latest diet fad fueled mostly by laboratory rather than human studies. Investigations suggest an excess of energy intake especially during early and mid-life may be associated with increased mortality. For over 100 years laboratory studies in a wide variety of animal models consistently demonstrate caloric restriction often leads to a dramatic increase in lifespan. The average dietary intake is restricted to about 40% of normal.
Amazingly this added longevity may be accomplished without a total decrease in energy intake. Rather manipulation of meal frequency and meal size may be the key issues with significant inter-individual variation regarding benefits.
Intermittent Fasting fits into the overall category of caloric restriction. Included among the options are calorie restricted eating. Generally this means fasting for 12-20 hours a day and consuming relatively few calories on those days. A popular variant is Intermittent Fasting for 2 days out of the week. Either a complete fast or consuming fewer than 25% of typical calories will suffice. Alternate day fasting is yet another option. Another choice is restricting calories to no more than 30% of normal for 5 consecutive days during the month and repeating the diet 3-4 times each year.
In laboratory investigations these dietary manipulations lower the glucose, insulin and certain growth factors while simultaneously increasing production of ketone bodies in the liver and intestine. Caloric restriction protects against obesity, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, degeneration of the central nervous system and reduces the incidence of cancer. Animals show improved balance and coordination as well as greater endurance on physical activities such as running.
Caloric restriction in animals improves recovery after surgery, improves mental health and reduces clinical manifestations after spinal cord damage and traumatic brain injury. It decreases age related eye disease and preserves hearing into old age. It may lessen symptoms akin to multiple sclerosis and improves both short term and long term memory.
The mechanisms associated with improved health from caloric restriction are still in their infancy but appear to involve the circadian clock, ketone bodies and their effect on metabolism and even an altered gut microbiome.

I've been on a calorie restricted diet for over 2 years now only eating 800-1000 calories a day tops, along with intermittent fasting of at least 16.5 hours. I went from having cirrhosis in my liver from non alcoholic fatty liver to no fibrosis at all with very mild fatty infiltration in the liver and losing over 45 pounds in less than a year.

I also have noticed a vast improvement with my fatty liver issue! I have been intermittent fasting for 4 months, and my liver values were in the normal range for the first time in over 10 years

@@kiaharper7172 I wanted to let you know what I have noticed, just in case you are still curious.
Overall I've noticed I am a bit "stringy." All through my school years (in my 40's now) I was a thinner person, never really gaining any muscle mass regardless of what I tried (though never tried steroids). I am noticing that my physic is almost like it was back in high school, but with some fat around the belly still. If I flex, still can't form a bicep, though the musculature is firmer than it was pre-fasting diet.
      Good luck with everything!

It has changed my life, but I would strongly suggest someone who is going to try it start with a pure KETO diet first for a month so your appetite will be greatly reduced, making it much easier. I now do 20/4 and low carb with 0 added sugar. I am 65 and lost over lost 60 lbs over three years. I feel like I am 30 again. I am sharper and have a ton of energy all day.

Thank you for your videos. I enjoy many of your videos. I like that you explain conclusions. I like that you give all the information about a topic as you can give, and it's impressive. I noticed you perhaps touched on the idea of an ancestral diet without mentioning it directly in that outcoms vary, There are secrets to be found in tradition as well. As someone with a few conditions (psychiatric and neurological ), i feel fasting is not for me. Smaller meals are best, if my gut isn't working then i don't have consistancy in mood and thought. I did my own version of the cabbage soup diet (developed for heart surgery patients that need to loose weight) a while back and it gave me some important insights into food as nutrition vs food as calories.. Thank you Doctor.

Calorie restriction without fasting is useless. You just end up tired and hungry,. You body slows down and decides you do not need as much, so you have to double down by cutting more calories. Fasting does not seem to act like that, and if you avoid sweet food and other refiened carbs then you tend not to get hungry at all. He's a bit behind the curve on this issue I think, as he seems to use "calroie restricted" and "time restricted" together.

If you have a couple of lbs of fat anywhere on your body, you need no food. But you have to be adapted to burn fat. IF and low carb is the best and fastest way to achieve that.

Fasting is a great way to improve weight loss and insomnia. I've been doing intermittent fasting for almost a year. I drink lots of tea on those days I fast. Would it be okay for someone to take Lithium and fast? I think Lithium needs fatty foods to absorb but not sure if that's true?

If drugs studies can be done (presumably safely) on humans, why studies on fasting can't?
With 2/3 of the US population overweight, I don't think it's due to lack of qualified volunteers.

I think because pharmaceutical companies cannot make a single dollar on it. Big pharma can make money from medications and that's it so that is all they will ever study and invest in. It's the same way that many natural or legacy drugs work for current illnesses, but big pharma pushes for new drugs that they can patent and make billions on. Always follow the money.
