Bosch dishwasher repair - heater didn't work.

- My ~2012 Bosch SHE68R55UC Evolution 800 dishwasher stopped heating its water a few months ago. The dishes wouldn't get very clean, mid-cycle the water was cool, and at the end of the cycle the dishes would not be steaming hot like they should be.
After an unhelpful technician told me I probably needed a few fill valve, I took the dishwasher apart myself and found the problem: a failed relay to control the heater. It turns out older Bosch dishwashers are notorious for heater relay failures - a trace on the control board overheats and melts the solder attaching the relay to the board:

It appears on more modern dishwashers they've solved this problem, but the relay is inadequate and eventually fails due to internal arcing - in my case after about 8 years of use. I replaced my relay with a much larger one, so hopefully the problem will never reoccur.
The original relay was: HF3FD 012-HTF(576) 12VDC coil, 10A 250VAC
Pin-compatible replacement: Omron G5LE-1A-E DC12 12VDC coil, 16A 250VAC

This can replace the old relay directly. Hopefully the 16A contact rating will be enough to survive a good long time.
Larger replacement: Panasonic JTN1AS-PA-F-DC12V 12VDC coil, 30A 277VAC

This does not replace the old relay directly, but there's enough room in the control board housing to attach the relay to the PCB with double-sticky tape and solder wires from the PCB to the relay terminals. The 30A contact rating should be enough to survive forever.
If you're not up to soldering, a replacement control board is ~$150:

Here's a video showing how to disassemble the dishwasher - hopefully you don't need to take it apart this much:

Thank you for the thorough detail about the relay and PCB. Your attention to detail is superb and beautifully explained. This video directed me to a failed solder connection on the reverse side of the PCB to the relay. It was a failed solder joint. The existing 10amp relay was fine and the fault was fixed by re-soldering the relay tab coming through to the other side of the PCB. May God bless you Seth LaForge. He blessed me by directing me to your video! 🙏
Awesome video!! Last week was appliance hell as my microwave burned a flame sensor (there was no flame or excessive heat), my refrigerator lost the cheap plastic pins holding in the switch for the through-door ice dispenser, and my [Bosch] dishwasher failed to heat the water. In my case, it WAS the water inlet valve. I don't like being my best appliance technician (I'm not an appliance technician) and I appreciate helpful people like you making these videos. None of the videos out there directly solved my problems, but the approaches and clear thinking led me to about $600 in savings. The difference between the water inlet valve problem and the relay problem is that I had some heat and the dishwasher was always hot and steamy when it was done. With the relay problem, I would assume you would have no heat ever.
Thank you! This approach did the trick for our SE35A562SK/47 as well. In this model, the control board is at the top and required disassembly of the front panel. And it was a NAIS / Panasonic JS1a-5V AJS3319 5V relay, not a 12V. This one had gotten hot and was still clicking in a test but did not make contact anymore. After replacing the relay, dishwasher heats again and works well. Thanks for the tutorial!
Great job!!!! I just diagnosed the same problem today while out on a service call. Many service people are just parts replacers. I actually ohmed out the heating circuit then tested for voltage at the board instead of guessing. I sleep better at night that way.
I had already bought the heater unit $340 Canadian and saved $320 - so thanks for posting the video
Thanks so much for doing this video. I had the same problem. I ordered the parts from your links below and soldered the new relay switch on the circuit board. My dishwasher works great and I don't need a $1200 replacement.
That is a great video and explanation - thank you. I feel I need to learn the basics of electronics - research started!
This was exactly the same problem I had. I removed the relay and cut it open so I could sand the contacts. Bought me some time until my new relay arrives. Thanks so much
Thanks so much for posting this video. I followed your instructions and links for parts and was able to repair my dishwasher for about $15. You saved me a ton of money and I learned something new.
I'm so glad it was helpful to you!
Hey man thanks from an Appliance Tech going on 27, years I just started repairing Bosche dishwashers. This vid helped me tremendously
I wish that I had found your video before I replaced the instantaneous heater assembly.
I spent about $240 for the new part from Bosch to only find out that it didn’t help.
Like your video called out, a pin under the relay had to be soldered.
I just ran a load and the water is piping hot. I’ve got clean dishes again.
Thank you. This was very helpful and my dishwasher is back up and running.
I have a Bosch shx series dishwasher that was not heating. I checked the control board and it looked fine. My board is easy to access behind the door. I ordered a new heater assembly after checking the resistance at the connector on the control board that supplies the heater. It showed open and should be 11.5 to 12.5 ohms. ( it turns out that you can't check the heater this way) After looking at the new heater assembly, they incorporate a flow sensor switch that is in series with the heater. I pull out the dishwasher and remove the right side panel to access the heater and measure the resistance. It checks ok. I then find a wire hanging loose and not connected to anything. After looking at the wiring diagram I discover that this wire comes from the control board to one side of the capacitor for the main pump motor. The spade connector had corroded apart and fell off of the cap, preventing the main pump motor from running properly. New five cent spade lug fixed the problem. I would suggest anyone with a no heat issue check the board as described in this video and also check the heater resistance directly at the heater before ordering a new heater assembly. It could be something simple as in my case.
I've seen many videos where people think just adding solder to the old relay is an answer. But that is just a stop-gap measure that buys some time & the problem will recur. The issue is with the internal relay contacts.
You're a smart man, thanks for your imput. That service fool owes you some money!
sounds good , I'll order one of those 16 A relays .
Oh , i guess if I'm going to be doing some soldering , I better get a new bottle of MAP gas for my plumbing torch. 🙂
I have a kitchenaid that is not heating. I have tested the element, continuity and ohms. Shows no problem...I guess I will follow suit with the board.
Thanks for your video. I have a Siemens dishwasher that is having this problem and presents the error E02 on the panel. I think that the cause is probably something like this because I had the same problem around 3 years ago and it solved by itself after a few days while I was waiting for the assistance to come. Does it make sense that it got fixed by itself? Maybe a connector slightly move and started working again and now failed again?
The under-spec-ed relay trick is a very popular one in the appliance industry.
Hallo, i suspected this relay in my dishwasher but i dont beleave it several days while i am searching to fix the problem. Thanks.
Bosch 800, cold water only - fills to top of filter, replaced heat pump, no burn marks on Control board ,,, any thoughts or suggestions?
Very good. I hope I have same problem.
I am unable to find the Omron G5LE-1A-E DC12 12VDC here in the USA.
I was able to find the Omron G5LE-1A-HA-E DC12 12VDC.
Any idea what the "HA" stands for?
I can not find that in the Spec Sheet from Omron.
Yeah, I can't find it either. But the "HA" is in the part of the part number that specified "Insulation System" and the relay I used has the minimum insulation rating option ("Class F"), so my guess is that the "HA" specifies slightly better heat tolerance.
I'd try it. I strongly suspect it'll work even better.
This is great. Thanks for making the video. I have a Bosch SHE55R56UC/64 which very similar to yours. Would I use the same part as your model?
Probably, but I don't know. Find the relay that's broken and look up the part number. If you can find something with the same pins and voltages, and the same or ideally more current capability, it should work. digikey.com is a good resource.
Great video. Your heating pump was still working fine? Can a defect/semifunctional relay cause failure of the heating pump?
The pump was still working fine (water circulated through the dish washer), the water just wasn't getting hot.
The main water pump has a number of signal wires to it - I'm not sure if it's controlled by a relay or if the pump switch is internal to the pump. I could imagine either way. It might be possible that a failed relay on the control board would stop the pump from operating, but I suspect it's more likely to be a failure within the pump, since it contains complicated electronics, and a pump relay would be switching much less current than the heater relay.
@@sethml Cool thx
Thank you , you are grate.
Heating relay defect on the board would not cause a heat pump to fail, as the heat pump merely doesn't get power from the control board.
On the other hand if you have leaks from the sump, the leaked water can get in contact the zeolith heater (band heater) inside the wash pump and cause corrosion of components on the band heater/ntc.
This is one of the failure modes which will result in E09 error.

MBAs: Why sell sell an appliance that last 20 years when you can sell an appliance that needs proprietary replacement parts every 3 or 4?
Can you give 30A relay part number?
Good job sir
Thank mate .
Well i end up buying new one, insted of repairing... First i godt E15 which indicated water leak, after repairing I found out that my soap dispenser was also leaking, and finally I E31, I 🤔 it's not reasonable to repair, I'm rather buy new one...
I will never call an appliance repair guy...UNLESS the appliance is still under warranty. It's way too easy to rip people off in that trade.
