Author and historian Susan Campbell, the world's expert on walled gardens, makes her first visit to Althorp. Over the past forty years, Susan has visited and researched over 700 walled kitchen gardens in the UK and around the world. Her knowledge and insight will be invaluable as we undertake the massive task of restoring our walled garden.

Wisdom of our elders is so valuable! Thank goodness you have some people still alive that can give you valuable information. I wonder how things have progressed. What a sight to have seen the beauty and splendor of the gardens and greenhouses! Wow 😯

Really looking forward to this series, I was very fortunate to spend some years at Brereton Hall, loved that walled garden there and holidays at Glendoick in Scotland with my grandparents. Superb walled garden , now prolifiely growing stock for the garden centre. Enjoy visiting walled gardens on my visits to the UK .

Wow, I am very excited about the journey Lady Spencer is sharing with us about the restoration of this fantastic walled garden! I have ended up here in my research of walled kitchen gardens as I am one of the 2 women volunteers who have been entrusted (through our own initiative) to restore a much much smaller walled kitchen garden at Cockington Court in Torquay. It is completely overgrown and has been closed to the public and neglected, recently because of the pandemic but the past of its care is checkered presumably due to a lack of funding. When my friend and I joined the volunteer gardeners who take care of the Tudor Rose garden and the park itself, we found out about this somewhat secret closed garden and immediately fell in love with it, vowing to do extra hours on top of our other work, just to be able to bring the walled garden back to its former glory. Through my research I have also discovered Susan Campbell's books, so to happen upon this video is a true treat. I am subscribing and will be following the story of your walled garden ❤

This is so exciting! I adore garden history, and you are doing such a great thing, Countess Karen. Tapping the wisdom and experience of elders with specific knowledge of your gardens is fantastic. I'm happy to follow along from across the Pond.

Ah, kitchen garden, thats a new word for me,
a great word and I love the old pictures from the gardeners.
And cauliflowers in the old garden. Must have been great fertile soil.
I think those are cauliflowers, but may be someting else.

This will be fun to watch as you continue to uncover the history of this once glorious garden. To think that back in the day, households got most of their produce from their own backyard!! And, this one is HUGE!

Truly tapping into the wisdom of elders who know and are familiar with the land and gardens is common sense too many fail to grasp. When it was mentioned about dozing part of the yard only to realize there is a prime reason it is sculpted that way brings home the point in learning our land and respecting it's uniqueness for supporting food, crops, plants. I love this channel and the investiture into telling Althorpe's stories with love, respect and hope towards the future

Karen, Northamptonshire is a gem of a county for anyone interested in history, I was born and raised in the Gardeners Cottage on the Norton Hall estate a couple of villages from Althorpe, 40 years after the estate had been sold off to pay death duties, my parents ran a small garden nursery from the 5 acre walled garden, until mother retired to the Isle of Wight, sadly the whole walled garden is now a small housing estate.
As children we used to play along the top of the high walls! delve into the old underground cold storage egg shaped building and drop stones into disused wells. Yes, they are a micro-climate and rich in soil and history. Best of British with that you are opening up.

Loving the videos of the walled garden. Such history! Would love to build a walled garden but for now with our other projects, I'll live vicariously through you on your journey. Just a note: having so many older consultants and friends of the garden, please get a Polaris to drive your guests around (even your family). That's a lot of walking for older folks and you don't want them to fall. Carry on!
