- A small car swap recently occurred between Coney Island Yard and Jamaica Yard to facilitate the installation of CBTC equipment on the R160-type cars. After several months of being served solely by R46s, R68/As, and Siemens-Propulsion R160s, Alstom-Propulsion R160s from Jamaica Yard were swapped on to the N, Q, and W lines. The main difference between Siemens and Alstom propulsion R160s is the different sound created by the propulsion control equipment. Enjoy!

That is why I hope that after the first R211 train has been tested more cars can appear in large quantities so that the R46 cars can be replaced. The Siemens, Alstom and Kawasaki propulsion systems sounds equally good.

Yeah, the fleet was uniform. Unfortunately, a lot of the R160s are needed at Jamaica Yard for Queens Blvd CBTC, so R46 and R68 replaced R160s at Coney Island Yard.

Saw a video a while ago on the building process of those Alstom built R-160. Hand built with robot assist in Brazil then ship to Hornell NY for the rest. Life span they quote 50 years. I want a set. lol

I believe those same trains came from the once the A train borrow from Jamaica yard. Since the A don’t have any R160 anymore.
Correct.
The same specific numbered sets did not directly go from the A to Coney; Jamaica is losing 98xx to 9942 (the 2010 R160B option order batch basically) to the rest of Coney' Siemens. If they came directly from the A then all the 98-9900s would have been on the A all summer with no Cuomo or Siemens sets. The A saw many different sets anything from 8653-9942 and used up to 20 sets slowly down to 1 trainset as the 179s came back into Autumn.
@@trackwerkOG Well, you did mention that 9942 would have been seen on the A and it was transferred to Coney Island Yard. It's not like they gave all of the A train sets to Coney Island Yard; Cuomo and Siemens returned to Jamaica Yard. Any remaining Alstoms which I assume Jamaica Yard doesn't need were transferred to Coney Island Yard.

Why couldn’t the MTA equipped the R46s with CBTC rather than just putting on the N Q W because I miss seeing the R160s on those 3 lines

I believe these sets used to temporarily serve on the A line when R179s were out of service. They were moved to Coney Island Yard. It seems Jamaica has sufficient R160s.

THANKS for this . The CBTC s enabled at Jamaica Yd , I presume . I say this because yrs ago 53st Lex station had CBTC CPU Center placed there during R 160 s delivery s . Also I noticed transponders along stretches of "F " line routes since 2007 . R 142 s ,some low numbered 6400 s with small yellow markings upper corners on bulkheads ,I saw speeding thru IND Queens line .Later I saw these 5 cars Church Ave on s / b express track w/ technical engineers ,n notice many more transponders along IND routes ,E , F , G , now slowly on A in Brooklyn . I would nt be surprised if transponders are placed Rockaways being R 179 s are in service , as well as BMT s lines being placed as well .
Then i guess is coming in slowly. Because i was just on a R68 Q train this morning & afternoon.
I believe the R46 and R68 will still make up the majority of the fleet.

This swap didn't even take a full week to complete, it just suddenly happened and now no more Siemens at Coney. They'll probably come back in the future if severe service cuts actually happen and many R160s are freed up and used elsewhere. 2021 gonna be real interesting
@@toxicrepstan1897 the # of sets yes is true, but specifically 98xx-9942 are moving to Coney and many different sets (anything from 8653-9942) were used on the A. Hence Cuomo and Siemens sets too

The A ran different types of R160s running over the summer; Those sets have all returned to Jamaica as of Dec 9; Afterwards from there specifically only 98xx-9842 were sent to Coney in exchange for the remaining 89xx-90xx Siemens sets.
In numerical order this makes sense to keep it this way, although things can change at anytime.

The description is false. Alstom-propulsion R160s have always been on these lines since the very first day of revenue service until CBTC. He must have lost his mind because the title is correct.
There was a period of time when all of the Alstom propulsion R160s had been moved off of the Coney Island lines, but the Siemens propulsion R160s remained. For a brief time, a few Alstom propulsion R160s came back for a few weeks.
@@DJHammersTrains Someone also claimed the option order of R160Bs (9803-9942) were originally going to have Siemens propulsion, which would’ve resulted in Siemens already being on the E and F lines, so hooray for CBTC! I’m someone who actually likes where the 5-car R160s are now, as four lines now get to pick from any of them!

So first they had there r160 and then they gave it to the A train and now the A train is giving it back to The N Q W trains because the R179 came back now does the R train have R160 still? Is Broadway yellow line has fulling R160 and the A train took back the r46 from the N Q W ? Did they do something to the r68? These are type of questions other people should be thinking right now cause I have way more and I like answers

These sets were loaned from Jamaica to the A line because of a fleet shortage from R179s being out of service. It seems that Jamaica has enough R160s so they were instead given to Coney Island Yard.

Imagine if the 4 are full of r142as and the 4 stopped using the r142s
There are only 220 of them remaining so having the 4 use only R142As is only going to cause car shortages. That’s where R142s 7126-7180 and 1101-1250 come in, as they fill in the remaining gap needed to make service.
A fun fact to know is that R142 cars 7071-7180 and 1101-1250 were not intended to go on the 4 in the first place. Those final sets of cars were actually intended to go on the 3 line, with the 4 consisting of a mix of R62 and R142A cars. However, partway into delivery of the cars, the 9/11 attacks happened and everything just changed. With the 1 train going to New Lots Avenue and the 3 train shortened to 14th Street, there was a surplus of cars to make the 3 train 10 cars, something that was planned but was accelerated. When everything returned to normal, it was decided to use R62s for the 3 while putting the R142s on the 4 line. Today, cars 7071-7125 now run on the 2 and 5 trains

Not exactly. R160 Alstom and R188 use different propulsions. Specifically, Alstom ONIX and Bombardier MITRAC. Go ahead and compare the two if you'd like.

If anything, they sound like the 2, 4, and some 5 trains, which use R142s.
