Bond is back in what is my favourite Moore movie so far! And to be honest one of my favourite Bond movies in general! This film worked on all levels. Exciting action, fun gadgets, a beautiful and encompassing score that made the film feel so epic and grand. I totally understand now why people love this one so much. Also we get JAWS!!! the best character ever.

You're going to love Austin Powers. That's my good friend Caroline Munro who gets blown up in the helicopter. I hate that scene, she's such s beautiful person. I think she could have been a great Bond girl. She's deliciously good in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD and CAPTAIN KRONOS, VAMPIRE HUNTER, both films I highly recommend you watch on your channel.
I totally agree with your observations of SPY WHO... Unfortunately the next Bond film is the second worst in the whole series with only one nicely done early scene.
You mentioned SPECTRE and how we haven't seen it. The problem started with Thunderball. Thunderball was co-written by Kevin McClory before the Dr. No film, and as you saw, they made Dr. No instead. McClory went to court about EON productions' use of Blofeld and SPECTRE, so they basically stopped using SPECTRE and Blofeld until 2015. You might notice a dig at this in For Your Eyes Only. Part of the legal agreement with Kevin McClory is that he had the option to make his own Thunderball film. That is the 1983 Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery as James Bond. It's a Thunderball remake, but not done by EON productions.
I need to point out...even though the end credits says that the next movie would be 'For Your Eyes Only' (1981) there was a last minute change after the release of the orginal Star Wars (1977) became such a huge hit at the time...the next movie actually became 'Moonraker' (1979) instead, due to it's outer space theme, then the series came back to down earth with a more classic spy espionage storyline with 'For Your Eyes Only' (1981)... 😎✌️

Definitely one of Roger Moores best Bond outings. The opening sequence, the Lotus Esprit, Barbara Bach, submarines. It had everything!
And that's one of the best Bond films ever. Not just one of Moore's best, but one of the best overall. One of the best songs, best love-interests, best henchmen, best stunts, pretty much best everything.
Fun fact about this one: Jaws was actually meant to die at the end, but the director's young son really liked the villain (which is fair, everyone loves Jaws) and asked 'why can't he live? He's cool', so they wrote that Jaws defeated the shark and swam away to menace Bond another day.

Fun Fact: A representative from the Egyptian government was on-set throughout the shoot in Cairo and Giza, to make sure that the country was not portrayed in an unflattering light. For that reason, when the scaffolding collapses on Jaws, Sir Roger Moore merely mouthed the "Egyptian Builders" line, dubbing it in later. It went unnoticed by the official Egyptian minder, and ironically, got a great laugh from Egyptian audiences.

For that reason I would always pick this one if I wanted to introduce someone to what James Bond is all about...because it ticks all the boxes!
Yes, Jaws will be back. In what has to be the goofiest film in the franchise: Moonraker. Moonraker was a reaction to Star Wars (1977) and the general popularity of science fiction at the time.
2.59 The sailor smoking is Jeremy Bulloch, the original Boba Fett. 4.00 Michael Billington, apparently once tipped for Bond himself but famously known as Colonel Paul Foster in the Gerry Anderson sci-fi show UFO. The miniature FX, including the enormous super tanker were done by long time Anderson FX artist Derek Meddings who worked on the original Thunderbirds. And there's a Thunderbirds actor here too, the US sub captain is Shane Rimmer, voice of Scott Tracy.
When that union jack 'chute opened in the cinema back in '77, the audience just went wild.
Love seeing you react. You have to be given credit for enjoying films on their own merits, rather than having a skewed perspective because of the comparison of special effects between then and now. Regarding “canon”, that’s kind of a more modern concern, after franchises get rebooted. No one back then was thinking the different Bond actors were not in the same fictional universe, or were not the same character. In fact, all the official Bond films were “canon” and also referenced his marriage, up until the Daniel Craig films which seemingly are unrelated to any of the others.
The Bond films back then were made so each can stand on their own as much as possible with very loose connections with the others. You don't need to see OHMSS to know about Tracy as she may be referenced later in the films, but often indirectly and had nothing to do with the overall plot.
For Your Eyes Only was intended to be the next movie after The Spy Who Loved Me but the Bond team decided to join in the late 70's trend of space-related movies (Star Wars, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Superman, The Black Hole, etc) with the making of Moonraker for a 1979 release.
Barbara Bach is married to Ringo Star and a fav movie from them too was Caveman.
Originally, this WAS meant to be SPECTRE, but rights and all that prevented it from truly being the big bad. Although there are some allusions to the organization, like Atlantis literally being "The Octopus", and the question of how Stromberg got the money to go through with his plans.
This is my favourite Bond film. Plus it has the gorgeous Caroline Munro as Strombergs henchwoman.

Roger Moore's the horny Bond, lol. He would have loved that description of his interpretation of the character. Can't really say it isn't accurate.
Moore was actually blown up in the set of this one. During the scene where Stromberg shoots him under the table, Roger Moore was sitting on a chair packed with explosives. The sequence was filmed in a long shot and Moore could have used a stunt man. You wouldn't have been able to tell but he sat on that chair himself. Unfortunately the explosive detonated a second too soon, just as he was jumping clear. Moore joked for years afterwards that he now has 3 holes in his backside where he only used to have one. It must have been very painful.
This film came out the same year as the original Star Wars and performed quite well against it. Which is quite respectable as the box office takings for Star Wars were insane. There had been a 3 year gap from The Man With the Golden Gun. The longest gap at the time between Bond films as Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, the long time producers of the Bond series were dissolving their partnership and Broccoli from now on was producing the movies himself. So there was a lot of anticipation for The Spy Who Loved Me. This film was also more expensive to make than the original Star Wars.
Even though it says at the end of the film that Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only because of the unexpected success of Star Wars, everyone seemed to be making space movies at the time, so they changed the production schedule and the next one in the series was Moonraker as it was the only Bond novel that had any connection with space. Moonraker was released in 1979. For Your Eyes Only came out in 1981.
Interesting fact: Moore's bond never actually asks for a Martini, he's only ever offered one.
First film I remember seeing at the cinema back in summer 1977. Blew my then 7 yr old mind! Adored it ever since. Peak Sir Rog. 😁
11:43 "He's like a ninja in the night; a vampire even." I never made the connection before, but Jaws is rather like an Upyr. It's a type of vampire from Russian folklore known chiefly for its iron-like teeth. I doubt that was the intention of the filmmakers, but it might explain his ability to vanish so suddenly, get so quickly to inaccessible places, his superhuman strength and durability, and his habit of biting his victims to kill them.
Jaws was scary and horrifying during the Pyramid scene. Moonraker turned him into a buffoon.
The end of the movie said "James Bond will return in 'For Your Eyes Only'. But that is NOT the next movie.
This movie came out the same summer as the first Star Wars movie. So, to cash in on the "space craze", they chose a Bond story that takes place in space. The next movie is MOONRAKER (1979)

Jaws is unstoppable. One of the best and most iconic henchfolk. Great gimmick, great screen presence, and hilarious. Moore only has one henchperson I enjoy more.

The stage they built for the submarine pen was so huge, they secretly invited Stanley Kubrick to consult them on how to light it properly
I happened to be In London the opening weekend of this movie. They had the submarine version of the car on a pedestal outside the entrance. The British audience was so unresponsive I thought they hated it, but later found out this is typical for them. Saw it again three days later back home and American audience went nuts for it. One of my favorites!
I grew up in Manhattan and have spent lots of time in England visiting relatives, there is a huge difference in the way audiences respond in a movie theater (or in a cinema as it’s called in the U.K.). I was a 12 year old and went to see this movie in May of 1977 in Manhattan, and my parents had to take us to see it a second time because the audience was so loud (in NYC they will yell obscenities in a movie theater) yelling things and cheering that it was hard to hear the dialogue. When I went to England that June I went to see it at a cinema in London’s west end and the audience was quiet, although they did applaud once the credits at the end began to roll, but it wasn’t obnoxious. The reason English audiences (and European audiences) are better behaved at a movie is because it’s considered proper manners not to ruin the film for others. Also, much like seeing a play in a theater (which isn’t something most Americans do) you’re supposed to pay attention to the show.
Definitely Roger Moore's best, and also one of the best in the series. I like the music just like you do, a pity it is the only soundtrack by Marvin Hamlish in the series. The "Bond 77"-theme is fantastic as well as Nobody does it better and the variations of that. A new James Bond filming stage was finished in time for this movie, so perhaps that made everyone involved in the creation of the movie extra inspired.

This was the first Bond I ever saw and it’s still my favorite. The stunts, the car, the locations, the Bond girl, Jaws…all top notch when seen as a young man.

This was Roger Moore’s favourite of all his 007 films, and was the second Bond film directed by Lewis Gilbert who had previously made You Only Live Twice and would do the next film Moonraker also. (Can’t wait to see your reaction to Moonraker 🤣🤣🤣). Ironically this film and YOLT had some very similar plot moments

I was lucky enough to see this in 1977 at 6 years old with my cousins and uncle in London! This is classed as the best Roger Moore 007 film. When that parachute opened EVERYONE was cheering in the cinema. The white Lotus was such an iconic car too - they even made a toy of that vehicle. I will always have a soft spot for Live And Let Die though. The poster art for LALD is my favourite, all those tarot cards and cool colours. Best of luck with your exams tomorrow Ollie! I still have the toy model of the Lotus Esprit. It has missiles one can load and fire as per the Naomi termination scene. LALD does indeed have great poster art, as does TMWTGG. However, I love the iconic FYOE poster even more. Octopussy too, has brilliant poster art. The Moore era was great for graphic design and fine art.
Barbara Bach, born Barbara Goldbach, has been married to Ringo Starr of the Beatles since 1981. Her stepson, Zak Starkey, is the current drummer for The Who. Some real trivial trivia: Bach, along with Claudine Auger (pronounced "O-shay") (Domino from Thunderball) and Barbara Bouchet (Moneypenny from the Bond spoof Casino Royale), all appeared in the Italian horror movie Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971).

This movie is deffinale best Bond movie with Roger Moore right after "For Your Eyes Only", but has nothing to do with the book except James Bond, who wasn't even main character in the book. The main character in the book was Canadian tourist who leaves home and checks herself in a hotel to forget about her past (first part). She is kidnapped by two thugs (second part) and finally gets rescued by Bond (third part).
Jaws = Longest running recurring exotic henchman in the Bond series..... Odd Job, eat your heart out...

Yeah, it's great. The small-scale - and frankly more realistic - adventures like "Live/Die" and "Golden Gun" weren't going to cut it any longer. "Spy" had to be great, to keep up with Bond's REAL Nemeses, Spielberg and Lucas. Kiel's villain's name, "Jaws", is no accident, and space-agey Moonraker would soon - some would argue TOO soon - follow after the "Star Wars" phenom. It is said that British audiences stood and cheered after that famous opening sequence. Bond was BACK.

I was your age when I was watching The Spy Who Loved Me on Showtime or HBO for the first time. Yes, HBO and Showtime are that old.
It's funny how this one and You Only Live Twice were both directed by Lewis Gilbert, since both villains have essentially the same method of executing their different plans in space or at sea.

After the 60s the directors we're at each other's throats and trying to fight for the rights. That's why spectre doesn't appear until the Craig Era again.
Blofeld along with Spectre was out of the picture after Diamonds are Forever.

The helicopter car chase scene is one of the levels in the videogame Stuntman. The hardest game I’ve ever played but so rewarding when you get to see the scene cut together with the stunts you performed in it. Maybe check out some vids of it on youtube when you have some time. Hair pulling stress to play the first time, but fun to watch.

The guy who did the amazing parachute jump was Rick Sylvester. Multiple cameras were rolling only one camera shot him.
This film led to the building of the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios used to shot the interior of Stromberg's Super Tanker and today the stage remains one of biggest in the world
The Spy Who Loved Me was Roger Moore's favourite Bond film and for me still one of the best ever.
The Cubby Broccoli Sound Stage (as it's now known) was also where they filmed scenes from Superman The Movie.

Hands down one of the best Bond movie and without contest the best of the Moore era.
The Spy Who Loved Me was originally going to feature SPECTRE and Bloefeld, but due to the ongoing legal action taken by Thunderball co-writer Kevin McClory against both Ian Fleming and Albert R. Broccoli over the supposed rights to Bloefeld and SPECTRE, the Roger Moore films weren't able to use SPECTRE or Bloefeld; except for the opening teaser scene in For Your Eyes Only, where Bloefeld is seen, but his name is never mentioned.
The best Bond opening. From the rando in the baldcap to the dreadful rear projection. When something is that jarringly bad I just can't help but actually enjoy it. The rest of the film though.

I bet there's some kind of TH-cam creator survey that shows the viewers secretly love it. Any such survey is wrong. Mostly silent - and brief - head-nodding is the maximum allowed.
I endorse your request and I nominate you as chairman of DWEEB (Desist With Excessively Emotive Behaviour). TH-camrs seem to follow very set trends. RolyPolyOllie excluded, most use the fatiguing phrase 'without further ado' , watch the same set movies that other reactors already have, gasp / dab their eyes and generally over-emote, and, as you mentioned, gyrate in their chairs for no apparent reason.
@@tobyhart8515 I find I can cope with everything except the dancing. Good god the dancing. Recently I watched a few Airplane! reactions (the youngsters who couldn't 'read' some or most of the jokes were fascinating) and all of them without exception started boogying in their seats to the Saturday Night Fever dance segment. But it's a universal rule across all reaction videos on TH-cam. And it's not how anyone behaves when watching a movie in any other circumstance.
@@GregDowns Without further ado, let me start by saying say that the chair-dance fad is indeed among the most annoying trends. I too don't recall being moved to express myself through the medium of dance during any piece of celluloid. Film and general cultural illiteracy among YT's was apparent to me, although I hadn't realised it extended to actual illiteracy.
