Hi Leisa I’ve just been shown your latest video and would like to say welcome to the TH-cam watercolor tutorial world! I see you have had a channel for a decade but just started to create florals and to teach what I’ve learnt to call “modern” watercolor techniques - letting the water do the work, more intuitive, spontaneous colour blending experiences… hope you continue to post and bring some more fresh air to the watercolor tutorial world on TH-cam!
Hello and thank you very much Diane. I have been teaching in real life, locally, Nationally and in France up until Covid and now, even though I'm very busy earning a " mortgage paying" living, I'm determined to share my knowledge before I can no longer do it. My beautiful Mum has Alzheimers disease as her Mum did and it has made me aware that I may lose all of my knowledge one day without having fully shared it. I am very appreciative of you. All the best xo
Hi Leisa, thanks so much for your kind reply. I’m so sorry to hear about your mum and her illness. I can well imagine what you are feeling from personal experience, as for many years I lived with the fear of developing Huntington’s chorea, which had taken many of my relatives and the “not knowing” whether it was in my dad’s genes (before tests were developed) made me determined to have as much of a life as I could while I still could - just in case. Which mentality is still motivating me now, and knowing that I have reached more people through TH-cam than I could ever have hoped to reach a minute fraction of in real life has been a true blessing. Would you like me to mention your channel on my next video - I’m sure many of those who watch me would love your work too, especially if you continue to do the florals and vignette landscapes which are so pretty x Sending love and hugs x Diane
Oh Diane... I understand your situation and you must be very proud of what you have done and are doing for so many. You can mention my video if you want ut I won't always be doing florals so if that doesn't fit I understand. I'm trying to keep to about 12 minutes per lesson as , with filming and editing time- it's all I have time for. I think you are a very special person for taking the time to connect with me. Xo
Hi Leisa, thanks for that, I’m amazed actually at how many people watch our videos. I’m lucky to have my daughter working full-time with me and she does everything except the painting so that makes it easier for me to have the channel. I’ll definitely mention you no matter what you are painting, it’s just that florals are very popular. It’s wonderful to have someone from Australia to listen to (for me) because the American approach is so “in your face” and a lot of women (including me) are looking for people to listen to who are less strident. 😂❤
Really good lesson, thank you. Definitely going to practice painting the little flower pots, they were so pretty. And we are getting into Spring, great time to be painting flowers and plants.
Just watched your video and subscribed after seeing your name on Diane Anton's channel...good lesson and lovely little flower pots! Sandy, Raleigh NC USA
Lovely tutorial, great insights and sharing. Looking forward to your channel growing and seeing what other things you will teach us. Thanks for taking the time and sharing that even a few minutes daily can make a difference in our watercolor journey.
With your help, as a beginner, I was able to paint this and it came out beautiful. You’re a great teacher! Very easy tutorial! Well done!❤ I am looking forward to your new content. I can’t wait to try painting what you come up with next!
Oh that's so wonderful!!!! I'd love to see what you've done. Are you on Facebook??? Maybe, one day if you ever want to you could send me a picture??? I really hope you enjoy the next lesson. I uploaded it yesterday. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll send you a link. All the best, Leisa
Hi Leisa, thanks so much for your video tutorials. I've just come across you today and have instantly subscribed to your channel. I'm a 'reborn' beginner watercolour 'artist'. I achieved a good grade Art qualification when very young and became a cartographer then a graphic designer in my long career. Now retired I have returned to my art roots and am loving every minute of it! My problem is, l am an extreme perfectionist and my art shows it! I really need to loosen up big time, and your recent tutorials give me renewed inspiration, thank you. We've just returned from Portugal where I have been sketching and painting. I now have masses of photo material of beautiful street scenes with amazing colours, as you can imagine. You have now inspired me to do a lot of very needed watercolour practice! Your follow up video on shadows will also be invaluable to me. Thank you so much. 👍 Pete (UK)
Oh Peter that's wonderful. I'm very envious of your photos and I'm sure you'll have many inspirational images to paint. I've always been a perfectionist with 25 years of working as an Architectural illustrator and extremely realistic work, painting buildings onto photographs as if they had already been built so I can really understand you're situation. I really hope you can relax into watercolour as it's such a beautiful medium and perfect for artists like us!!! Thank you so much for messaging me.
Hi Leisa, thank you for your lovely reply and encouragement. It is interesting to see we have both been in areas of work that have required detailed presentation. It is lovely to see your amazing art, and I will continue to follow and learn from you. Thanks again.
I used DERWENT brand and even though the set has no names on it's colors ( as I may have lost the sheet as well as it's an older set- it is the Magenta ... I've noticed that this set matches my DERWENT Watercolour pencils so the equivalent pencil colour is Pencil 22 MAGENTA . If you don't have DERWENT, you could use Cotmans Brand OR Daler Rowney Brand, Colour is called PERMANENT ROSE. Let me know if you need any more info.
She's the loveliest lady....she just messaged me last night and I can already tell from her messages that we have a lot in common. She is certainly a kind and generous soul. Thank you for watching, I really appreciate you.
Pinks: light is Magenta from my Derwent Set of Watercolors. Dark pink is called QUINACRIDONE Magenta from Winsor and Newton. Greens: Lights- Derwent "May Green" ,and a mid green Derwent "Sap Green" . Dark green: from my Derwent set....no name but for a similar result use a Bottle Green and add a little Magenta OR red to it. This will darken the tone and make the color less bluish. It would also be fine to use on its own as Bottle green but with less water mixed in with it, then it will be dark. Hope that helps.
@@suzieblair8089 I am from Australia so I may have access to different brands of watercolor paint than you....I would recommend any of these brands : Derwent, Winsor &Newton, Daler Rowney Cotmans, Art Spectrum. If you think you might like to use watercolour pencils too, Derwent make sets of pencils and their colours match their paints. Best of luck.👌🏼
Thank you, I will look into the Derwent. It makes sense so you can work in some shadows or highlights with the pencils. Thank you again, suzie@@LeisaOBrienArtist
@@LeisaOBrienArtist Would you mind sharing the browns you used as well? My burnt umber, burnt sienna, etc. combinations didn't match yours. Maybe sepia? The rest of the colours were easy to substitute. Thanks!
Yes. I have had a TH-cam channel for a long time but used it mainly for private videos when I had a Patreon account and for my students from my Annual National Art workshops. Life is passing by too quickly and now I have good reasons to share my knowledge to those who it may help before it's too late. Xo

loved this video, would you please do more like this, in the miniature scale. Thank you, suzie
Yes Suzie. I don't have a studio these days and paint from a small table so small paintings will mostly be what I do xo
I will be loving that for sure. suzie@@LeisaOBrienArtist
