    Thank you for this (and other) very informative video about your Soniscape recording. Like many people, I too have had my share of "bad neighbours" and such, but what really was the issue was my hyper-sensitive hearing. Without going into too many détails, suffice it to say that sometime in the late 90s or early Y2K, I actually designed my own little "Soniscape" series of recordings, meant of course to help block out the undesireable noises produced by outside interférences. In my case, and as you appropriately mentionned in this video, the problem came in low-frequency noises such as loud bangs and thuds, which disrupted my sleep for numerous years. After I made my own recordings (which were essentially series of sound frequencies mixed together) principally of low-frequencies as well, I have been using these to help me sleep for numerous years now, with great success. I have found through conversations with people that most seem immune to the "noise pollution" generated by others, something which I have always found strange seeing as how what passed as "normal" noise for most was quite "unbearable" for me. The idea of ear plugs and such works decently for high-to-some mid frequencies but don't do anything for the lower frequencies. I guess most people are accustomed to door slams and foot stomps, and only consider "inconsiderate" neighbour behaviour as being loud music or parties. Finally, I have also noticed that we are living in an increasingly louder society (North America). Not only have stereo reproducing devices become much louder (read: hyper-bass-boost!), but we are also subjected to more noise (levels) than ever, be it from automated voice recordings in elevators, public transits, and Subway systems, which also appear to be elevating the levels to "counter-act" against how people are paying more attention to their speaker-phone conversations in public than which station should they be getting off at!This always reminded me of an old example we have here in our "metropolis", where one person not speaking the same language as the other person would result in said person just repeating the non-understandable words or phrases more loudly... As if screaming at somebody in a different language would result in a better understanding.Anyway, thank you for the great information provided, and of course, for the empathy in having lived such situations which have resulted in a creative way of counter-balance.

    I just played the soniscape to try to block out my neighbor’s subwoofer. The subwoofer is winning. I hate heavy bass. People who live in apartments need to realize they are not the only ones in the vicinity and shut the heck up.

    Just downloaded this as I am desperate to find some way of blocking out my awful upstairs neighbours, who stomp and bang and thud and then do it deliberately when you do it back! Here's hoping it works, although I really object to having to resort to this in my own home! They set off my migraines now because it's started at 3am and interrupts my deepest sleep cycle :(

    i just bought Soniscape two days ago from iTunes, and it`s just great, the noises from my above neighbor really disappeared, spicily the footsteps noise, its like magic, and the Soniscape it self is really smooth and relaxing, far better than white or pink noise which is somehow worked with me but its not smooth and gives headaches.
    thank you so much for this great solution for the noisy neighbors.

    I love the story and motivation behind this... from someone who has been through the thick of it and knows it takes some low tones to drown out the bullshit. Love the channel.
    Out of nowhere (pretty as much as I started working from home a year and a half ago, of course), there has been a constant rotation of people who just pull up right below, above, or even behind, and have their subwoofer "sesh" shaking our walls (and worse, our nerves), anywhere from 10 minutes to 6 hours. The only hours that seem to be free of this are 4-5:50 AM.
    5 white machines, failure to recoup and get my health issues under control, and feeling like *WE'RE* the lunatics when we snap and lose it (or blast circus music to "fight back", etc). Most places, it's usually one or two bad apples pissing off everyone else, but now we're literally surrounded by a constant rotation of this shit, alone in it. We can't be the only ones losing sanity over this, can we?
    Not even in an apartment, there's a brick house close below that slams their door so hard it shakes the entire downstairs of our house (a long house too), even though the houses aren't even connected. Before last year, it was never this bad. There'd be the usual drive-by stuff that was annoying, but holy hell. It almost seems like they're a hivemind with this stuff, they are so in sync with their habits. There will be a few days with nothing, where you think, "holy shit, I can actually study and work!?" and then the next day 10 instances.
    This year we were driven to add security cameras, and within *five days* it caught shady stuff. Within a few days of me yelling into the void through the walls about having a work meeting interrupted while they fuck around all day, the cam picked up some shady "characters" prowling around my front porch. Other's have decided to use our steps as their personal park bench. It's a god damn nightmare. With Winter coming, I get to be back out there on the street shoveling snow amongst them, but luckily most of them don't bother. Fun times. It never used to be like this.
    Anyhow, I will definitely be trying your track, WITH my subwoofer of course (that I always made sure stays within my own walls so far, because there's enough of that here).
    On that note, do you think your Instant Karma Machine could be rigged for the subwoofing stuff in front of my house? I have some mics and a delay or two laying around. (Ironic, reading through the comments, how many musicians are victims of this nonsense).
    I have some odd (apparently undiagnosable by any doctor who I've seen) neurological issues. I was reminded of one of those oddities in particular:
    Some years ago, I developed this issue where any time a diesel truck/giant pickup would be rumbling up the hill or down the street, even if I could barely audibly hear it (or had noise masking on and couldn't hear it at all), my left eardrum would start spasming. Like a full blown muscle spasm. It was bizarre. It just started out of the blue. After a couple years, that particular issue just disappeared. It was only that specific frequency that would set it off too, not even the bullshit shelf shaking bass did it.
    The doctors just threw Ativan at any of those issues, so it's an unsolved mystery. Seeing your comment about Lyme down below, though. That is a possibility for me too, as some of my other stuff started within a week of a hike in the Midwest.

    • @SlowDancer
      @SlowDancer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know if it's related to your problem, but I suffered from hyperacousis for a long time, and I got natural sensitive earing. I know those spasms, and also experienced tinitus. 2 main things helped me, first was health hygiene, by cutting sugar, sodas, and even carbonated water. Sleeping well (haha...), doing some physical exercises, the basic healthy stuff. The second was to realise the psychological aspect of sound trauma. Just like your stomach will produce more gastric juice if you are stressed, your ear as an organ can act on recurrent agression. The physical aspect is here to keep you moving, but as you lose strenght, your body will get triggered to known aggressions, or what looks like it. Think PTSD acted by your body parts. No idea if it helps, but that's an option. I'm currently living the neighboors nightmare again and my symptoms are back as days go, hence why I ended here. Need to try sleeping the head in the speakers.

    Stephen, thank you tons for your work on behalf of all tortured tenants, suffering with inhuman neighbors. My situation is quite unusual and I would like to know if anyone else is tortured with extremely loud, pounding footsteps from neighbors in the DOWNSTAIRS apartment. I could never have been prepared for something like this, since I moved into a top floor apartment a month ago. The troll below me constantly pounds his feet and it is most akin to listening to off and on hammering throughout the day and night (he likes to pace sometimes till 4:30 in the morning). Here I am in a very large apartment, approximately 16 feet above him with a substantial floor between our respective apartments, and I can still hear his pounding footsteps.
    Stephen my question for you is that I like to relax in the evening hours and watch TV; would it be possible to listen to your soundscape CD with the TV on at the same time?

    Had a neighbour who was an actual crackhead. His schedule was the complete opposite of mine. I would get home from work around 6, just as I could hear him getting up. An hour later his idiot friends would arrive and then the music would start (radio). All night, every night for 4 months I endured this shit until I ordered a 5 watt radio transmitter. When you are within 10 feet of a radio, all you need to do is turn the transmitter on and it'll walk all over anything regardless of what its tuned to. The static was so loud they would turn it off. I'd turn it on any time I heard music day or night and piss myself laughing.

I'm also a musician (40+ years) and sometimes I have to suffer hearing my neighbour's bass frequencies.....no way to mix music or even concentrate in my own space......I appreciate your thoughts regarding masking sounds and frequencies but I'm thinking perhaps the good old USA 2nd amendment might work better in this case....unfortunately it's illegal in Canada......but a well placed 12 or 16 gauge could solve a lot of problems!

    Bosch has taken this idea with Sleepbuds, modified earplugs that carry an audio track. Soniscape sounds very much like 'Rinse', a popular track. Bosch also has simple harmonies that fill your ears with golden tranquil sounds, and make you look forward to sleep instead of dreading it. Cost is about $AU300.00, not cheap, but stopped me from bailing up my partying neighbor, every Saturday, 2.30 am. Nice!

      I don't think most people consider waterfalls and such as horrid noise...
      But maybe if you understand how deodorant works, you can wrap your head around this concept...
      By taking armpit stank and covering it up with fragrant oils like peppermint you mask the foul odor with a pleasant one.
      It doesn't remove the B.O. smell, but the peppermint fragrance will cover the B.O. and in most cases nobody will notice the stank.

    What about the vibrations from the thumping from upstairs? How does one block that? Sound isn’t the only issue, vibrations from things like subwoofers and heavy walking keep me awake from my terrible neighbors in my apartment building. I have upstairs neighbors who slam doors, walk heavy, run in the halls, and have never met a floor they don’t like to slap their feet across. The sound isn’t the worst part. It’s the shaking of the building, and the vibrations.

    • @BrettHoustonTube
      @BrettHoustonTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, Soniscape can only mask those down to 20 Hz we can physically hear. Beyond that our body can feel the vibrations. Having a neighbor above you is like being in a giant drum and they are jumping on the drum head.
      The sounds below are much more intense as the ceiling and walls reverberate.
      And if you make a recording most of that will not be picked up by the microphones so it's hard to relay this experience to others.

    • @BrettHoustonTube
      @BrettHoustonTube  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are laws, there's just few if any who enforce them...
      Soniscape will cancel bass if played at a slightly higher volume and you have speakers that will reproduce those low frequencies. Few inexpensive systems are capable of that. Pro gear will do it.
      The only catch is that once you go below 20hz the human ear can no longer hear it, but the body can still feel it.

    Out of curiosity, is it known what long term effects are associated to sleeping on a constant background sound level? Masking, if i understood correctly, requires adding additional "energy" at all audible frequency bands. Yes, you most likely reduce the cognitive "surprise" from hearing sounds with a meaning. I tried something similar but it felt like sleeping on a plane: constant white-noise. It was very tiring for me. Can't you perform noise cancellation at the room level, given where your head is located?

    • @BrettHoustonTube
      @BrettHoustonTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a great question. I thought about that a lot since I was the crash-test dummy during research and development.
      I used all natural sounds one would normally hear in the wilderness. When sleeping outside in a place like Yosemite you naturally hear water flowing, crickets chirping, wind blowing, rain falling and such. So by design we are not harmed by constant exposure to these sounds. Now they are not exactly being used in the same sense considering how important frequencies are, that is the grey area.
      It greatly depends on the volume levels. If you play it over 128 decibels for prolonged periods, like any sound at that level, it will cause hearing damage.
      But if played at safe levels should not cause any issues.
      I have been sleeping with this most every night for well over a decade with no adverse reactions.

      TooK Kat
      Yeah, I was worried about that too initially. From what I understand damage can occur at volume levels above 140 decibels. They consider 128-140 db the "threshold of pain". So as a guide if you are in pain, it can be damaging. For a reference a jet engine is around 140 db. You can also measure sound waves with a decibel meter. Radio Shack used to make them, you can probably find em cheap on Ebay.
      I have been using it for years with no noticeable damage. I often sleep with a feather pillow over my head to reduce the soundwaves. I have had my ears damaged by ear plugs while sleeping so I don't do that anymore.

      @@BrettHoustonTube Brett, could you talk a bit about this situation..... lets say i buy the speakers and subwoofer, how would the hookups work? i'm assuming you'd need a device to play Soundscape on that enabled the speakers and subwoofer to plug into it? what type of ports would your device need to have to accept the speakers and subwoofer?

      Mighty dwarf makes a transducer that has an MP3 player built into it
      I bought one to experiment with and it ended up malfunctioning on me so in my experience it was not very dependable but it worked quite well when it worked
      It’s a very small unit and uses whatever material you place it on as a soundboard
      For example if you set it on the night table it will make the entire night table vibrate to produce the sound like a speaker
      If you place it on the wall it will vibrate the wall which could be ideal in situation‘s with Neighbor noise

      Well there are many variables as far as connections and devices. Typically there are adapters and such that will bridge the gaps.
      If you get a subwoofer speaker set made for computers they are typically a 3.5MM headphone style connection.
      I would avoid anything wireless or Bluetooth because it uses the same freq as a microwave oven... That's not healthy especially for long term use while sleeping.
      A bass guitar amplifier will do the trick but you may need an adapter to run it from a computer, phone or mp3 player. I am using a JBL Eon pa speaker at the moment and it works well. Otherwise I use a KRK subwoofer and speaker set driven by a separate amp...

This only happens at night when they play low intense bass music. The feeling of my head being fried only happens on weekends around 3am. i was think it might be infared music pointed at my bedroom window. I thought about buying a piece of tin and setting it in my window to see if it will maybe reflect it back to them.

    Hi Bret. I have living upstairs from me a demogorgon. Will soniscape cancel out the crunch of poor peoples skulls as demogorgon bites down effortlessly? Or when he’s picking out tissue and tendons between his teeth with a femur. But that’s about it. Nothing else here bothers me. Just the demogorgon upstairs.

      If you have a strong sound system with a full-range subwoofer it likely will cover all those crunching sounds and screams since they are mostly mid-range-high frequencies. The rumbling and stomping of hoofs is a little more challenging since it's typically in the low range.

      I just knew you were a cool dude Brett. Your idea is actually pretty brilliant. And the added delay. Very nice. My wife and my 6 year old daughter think I’m nuts, but I swear, our neighbors upstairs. Well, there’s two up there, but I think it’s just one of them who has devoted their precious time to hone in on their canine sense of hearing to let me know that they know exactly what square foot of the apartment I’m in. They are very good at hide n seek. I don’t have any fun toys physically like you do. But! I do have an addiction to the App Store on my iPhone. I think you could make some gnarly sounds with a Moog model 15 or even an Animoog. Some synthy stuff. I don’t know what I’m saying. Hey, God bless you and your family. I would pray that the Lord pour His blessings down on you and family. Take care pal.

      A 455nm wavelength 5 watt Blue LASER with a collimator (a 10X magnification small telescope to make the beam around 10 times more parallel at great distances) co-axially mounted with a high magnification riflescope or a terrestrial high magnification telescope on a tripod works great from many miles away.
      The crosshairs of the scope should be aligned beforehand to that the LASER dot will be directly centered say a mile away or more or so.
      It could clear out a problem very quickly when one presses a button though one has to use it for a very short amount of time and make a quick getaway when the authorities are called.
      Of course this won't work unless you have a line of sight to the target.
      Don't ever do this though it's just for information purposes otherwise it is a crime and can carry severe consequences if your apprehended.
      I would never do this of course instead of breaking laws I just circumvent them like using high
      powered massive arrays of blue LED lights to temporarily blind the nuisance and violent aggressive dangerous thug orcs in my neighborhood.

    • @Rhynobeatz1
      @Rhynobeatz1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stopping a neighbors sound noise (music, movies, yelling) is relatively easy these days. Problem is there are two aspects to stomping the part that's easy and the part that sucks, which is vibration. Vibrations created in structures due to noise are bad enough, but you are dealing with a kinetic vibration made from the act of stomping which can be amplified by flooring and sub flooring that can also pass down common walls and structural beams and especially beams that share the same electrical outlet positioning floor to floor those outlet boxes if not insulated are paths for that vibration to carry any and all sound. have you ever noticed that sometimes while someone is stomping and yelling at someone you can hear the yelling more clearly even if it is the same volume as times prior with no stomping. It's because the kinetic vibration can and does carry the vibrations of other sounds that would normally dissipate or dampen with it.
      Actual physical vibrations must be canceled or absorbed structurally as they cant be fixed by using a sound frequency to mask or cancel it only the sound that the kinetic vibration makes during its occurrence and any sounds that piggy back. Kinetic vibration involves a physical impact. You have to be able to soften or absorb the impact of the blow to accomplish anything. Best of luck, because that's always expensive, time consuming or both.

      It should be the same quality on CD as if you play the MP3 from a computer or ipod etc, it all depends on the process you use to burn it though. There is a difference in quality though between an mp3 from iTunes and the WAV files used to make the cds since MP3s are highly compressed.

    • @BrettHoustonTube
      @BrettHoustonTube  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to be certain your speakers are reproducing those low frequencies. Soniscape will produce them. You can download apps for your phone that will show the freq ranges. To be accurate you need a pro model and an external microphone.
      I'm not sure what you mean by wobbling, Soniscape is as constant as natural track can be.
      Aside from that a door slam will produce vibration below what the human ear can hear, yet your body will still feel it. That is a very tough one there.

      That depends on sound pressure/volume levels. Anything beyond 120-140 decibels (threshold of pain) can cause damage long term.
      If you are sleeping with noise you already have a concern in this respect. There are free apps you can get to measure sound levels. A simple rule to follow is if you feel pain, it's too loud.
      Soniscape is composed of all natural sounds. At safe levels it will not cause any more damage than sleeping next to a waterfall.

      This deodorant analogy makes me laugh. But I can vouch that masking sound like this works. I have been using a box fan in the bedroom but I have used BWE and other types of music and sounds from videos on YT. The type of sound matters to our nervous system for sure. Besides, it also helps the psyche when we feel like we have some semblance of control in regard to what we listen to.
