    I have the 2018 XC90 and I believe they updated Pilot Assist over the period of time. The system on my car works great on highways. You can set the speed you want and the car does the rest. It does depend on the lane markings to maneuver itself. So far I've used it without any issues.

    Alex, you might want to do a revision of this video. The 2017 models can now drive semi autonomously over 30 miles an hour. Can you do a review of that please thank you.

    Alex, could you do a special video outlining a little more about you and the equipment you use to make the quality production videos on TH-cam? Quiet honestly, compared to the larger magazine/web based companies, you are the go to person/video for in-depth reviews of cars and trucks for me.

    Not really sure how I feel about these systems...I mean, what's the point with all its limitations. It seems to me that adaptive cruise control is enough and safer as it keeps the driver more engaged. A fully autonomous drive system, like Tesla just sent out as an OTA update last nite would seem a better system to me.

    Thank you for making the video. I just took delivery of a 2016 XC90 T8. Love the Auto Pilot. I didn’t see anywhere that it operates up to 30 mph. I guess mine has a bug 🐛. It works at 80 mph to. 😊

    This tech is coming at the exact right(or perhaps wrong) time for me. I've been putting off relearning to drive as I work on my eyesight; its becoming very tempting just to wait it out. And with parents willing to buy me a car when I relearn I may just tell them to hold off & stick with the 20yr old Suburu that's kinda-sorta mine until selfdriving tech is on the market.

    It's alright but Tesla Motors is now ahead of everyone and they wont lose because their R&D is driven by leading engineers in the place where those people want to work = Silicon Valley. Having the brightest engineers in an agile R&D environment with management appreciating it, is the key to technology leadership.

    Alex: you didn't comment on the lane keeping assist that is active all the time in the XC90 and is complimentary to the ACC. Did it keep the car centered in the lane for you ?

  • @Crazyerics
    @Crazyerics 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The system seems a lot like Mercedes Distronic with Steering Assist. The Mercedes system does not require the hands on the wheel below 20mph however. Will you be comparing other automated-driving systems in the future? I'd also like to see you further test these systems in multiple driving conditions and environments. I find it fascinating!!

    Nice system and review. At 1:07, a CRV was slowly merging ahead of you from the right lane yet the XC90 appeared to keep moving forward. How did the Volvo behave in this situation?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +corradomr2 It cut in front of the Volvo and the Volvo applied the brakes eventually. Then the system cancelled because no right lane line was detected.

    Hey Alex. When I click in your video to view the 2016 XC90 full review, it is not letting me. It just pauses the video. Can someone tell me if this is also happening to them. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks

    How does this system stack up against Tesla's autopilot?

    • @DevonThome
      @DevonThome 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Han Chen Given that Tesla's works over 30mph, I'd go for Tesla, aha.

    • @qkhuve
      @qkhuve 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Turqmelon Well, it technically could work it's just that they don't allow it yet because of laws and such

    • @delumen
      @delumen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Han Chen The Tesla autopilot also gathers information from all cars capable of autopilot and are continually learning the roads and mapping them. Tesla may be third into the market with this but their system is learning and getting better, with OTA (over the air) updates it also makes it easier to upgrade unlike other car manufacturers.
      On other features, the Tesla system also can automatically change lanes with a flick of the signal change handle but needs to be flicked off once lane has changed. The car distance length can also be adjusted when autopilot is engaged. The Tesla system can also work at 30+ mph and can adjust with the speed limit. Other than those, I think they are all quite similar and work well. Time will tell which one will win out.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Delumen Most of what you mentioned isn't unique to Tesls, Volvo's system does OTA upgrades, so will Ford SYNC 3 and a few others. The distance on all systems can be adjusted. What is unique is Tesla's lane mapping which helps keep things going in some situations. The effectiveness of that we don't know yet but the data collected is likely helpful. We haven't seen what things are like with and without that type of system.

    • @delumen
      @delumen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex on Autos Didn't know that, I stand corrected. I'm glad they are doing OTA updates.

    Sorry, but Tesla has leapfrogged any other system in existence and is far superior. As far as OTA updates, Tesla's are the only cars capable of true, meaningful upgrades.

  • @TheAdventureAuto
    @TheAdventureAuto 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its odd they didn't make it 40mph bc how often do you find yourself needing to do 30? Only people in daily stop and go should find this useful, but at that point why would you be driving this vehicle.

  • @DO-hf5zw
    @DO-hf5zw 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sorry...but the Tesla Auto pilot is MUCH better than this.
    Tesla has:
    1. Autonomous Lane Change
    2. Higher speed capabilities.
    3. Can see the lane markings a bit better.
    4. Learning via OTA from other drivers.
    Maybe Volvo beat Tesla to market but remember, it isn't always the first product to market that wins.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Arnis Tarassu Yes and no. The auto pilot feature which was just released on 10/15 does depend on solid lane markings. Lane departure features however don't require the lines to be quite as defined.

    All the hoopla around autonomous driving is nonsense. In the real world, all we really need and want is self-driving in stop-and-go and self driving on interstates at highway speed. That's where the actual value and time savings come, not to mention safety. Well, that stuff is easy and we could have it next year. All the talk about liability and driverless cars and drop-me-off-and-go-park-yourself is a distraction. You heard it here first. Thanks Alex.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kip Amore It will come into its own when all vehicles are driverless, and road systems act like Ethernet switches.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well yeah, but that kind of level 5 autonomy will NEVER happen because you have to grandfather in the older cars. The only way for any of this to work is if each car can drive itself, with no help from infrastructure. As I say, all I really value is stop-n-go and highway cruise, and those are easy to implement and will get universal approval from drivers/buyers.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 ปีที่แล้ว
