The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft ferrying orbiter Discovery lands at Dulles International Airport on Apr. 17 following its journey from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
I am a Canadian and always have wanted to watch a live Shuttle Launch. I was unable to, however I had the honor of standing right under the Discovery on Sept 30, 2012 I could not contain my excitement too this day. WOW!
Thanks for posting this. Pluto 98 is the T-38 declaring a fuel emergency. (Chase) ... Pluto 95 Heavy was the 747 which landed on Runway 1R at Dulles. The T-38 did a 360 and landed safely on 1C (Center) on a parallel adjacent runway to where the Shuttle/747 pair had landed.
I know it's first flight was two months before I was born I saw enterprise in person at the Udvar-Hazy Center back in 2005 but in 2 months I will be going to see Discovery. It's going to be very nice seeing it in person knowing it was my most watched shuttle.
The shuttle may have been designed for low earth orbit, but the knowledge amassed from its flights will help humanity reach for the stars! I hope that we - not just America, but all of us as the human race - can get to the moon and beyond!
The Shuttle was limited to low Earth orbit, it was 1970's tech. By ending it NASA can focus on what will allow them to go beyond the Earth's orbit. This is not the end, merely the closing of A chapter.
hahaha, what a landing, the outboard left wing landing gear was in the air at some point while the opposite one on the right wing was compressed completely
Dulles has regular 747 flights in and out every day. As for the shuttle carrier aircraft (NASA 905), it also landed at Dulles in 1985 when it delivered Enterprise to the Smithsonian. Very impressive airplane :)
I agree both programs were amazing I know the shuttle was limited in how far it could go and whatnot.. I do have a question however.. Since at least I last heard they wanted to go back to using rocket stages.. How much payload could they carry?
Sir, America didn't "give up." Sure the budget cuts are controversial and probably shouldn't have happened to that magnitude but think about it, would it really be feasible to keep the shuttle fleet, which has been operating for around 30 years in dangerous conditions, alive for much longer? We have to make way for new technology by retiring the old. The Shuttles served their purpose well if you ask me. They will always be honored as excellent space vehicles. I assure you this is not the end.
Just so you know, I totally agree with your comment, but I will add on: The shuttle was 70's tech which was limited to Earth orbit. Apollo was 60's tech and it went to the moon...
I know that it was limited to low obit mate. but guess what? We still have the ISS, which is low-orbit, and still in need of supplies/humans being transferred back and forth from there. Now I think you missed my entire point, I have no problems with them finding a cheaper method... but they’re not. They just canceled the mission to mars because of the budget cuts. and Project constellation like I mentioned earlier is what was suppose to be the successor to the shuttle.
I have a feeling we won't be going beyond Earth's orbit any time soon. The space shuttle didn't have to be ended for NASA to develop something new. NASA just needed more funding. Hell, NASA will need more funding to develop something new in a decent time frame even -without- the shuttle.
that is simply wrong. we have not given up. NASA is working toward a goal of landing humans on Mars. they will build the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, based on the design for the Orion capsule, able to take four astronauts on 21-day missions. NASA is also moving forward with the development of the Space Launch System -- an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle that will provide an entirely new national capability for human exploration beyond Earth's orbit.
The shuttle was safe when operated safely. The orbiters barely exceeded 25% of their design life so it could have easily continued had Bush/Obama not blundered with the politics of it all. Obama increased funding to the commercial crew initiative (which was a good idea) but did not make good on his promise to extend shuttle and close the gap.
Great landing very smooth, a lil shake to the right a couple of sec after the rear tires touches down but overall its awesome. And to those stupid people arguing, it wont do any shit no matter how much you guys argue. Y'all wont be heard and never will..just wasting time
George Bush is the one who planned for the shuttle to end after ISS (he thought that we'd be able to develop a new system in the time between. But of course, we didn't). Though Obama and congress could have stopped it, and ignored pleas to let the shuttle continue despite having scratched out the shuttle's replacement. Bush and Obama are to blame, though I think Obama deserves more blame.
That's amazing, I wish Wilbur and Orville could have seen it.

Going to make it a goal in life to see one of these in person.

I watched this live fly over my elementary school. They brought everyone outside to see.
WOW AMAZING VIDEO FROM NASA AND THANK YOU GUYS
This would have to be the most well documented (the series) retiring of a spacecraft that I've seen ever!!! :)
I would say that written language and mathematics are humanities greatest hits.

Really, that WAS some great flying !
Solid point there. Lets hope that the NASA restart the Mission to Mars studies in the next year or two.
very emotional moment to see the space shuttle airborne for the last time....
A piece of history to be proud of.
Now GO TO SPACE, NOT TO WAR!!
That is a whole lot cheaper!!

THANK YOU NASA FOR THAT VIDEO

NASA will rise again ! Again to the Moon, then...Mars ! Thanks Nasa for all the great adventures.....see you soon.

almost perfect landing
Thank you NASA, very cool

NASA HAS AMAZING VIDEOS TOO WATCH ON TH-cam AND KIDS AND PETS I LIKE IT
I live 5 mins frome this airport so i just look out and their it is:)
It went over my school!
The SCA can transport people and inside cargo as well.
America has not given up. The space shuttle program has been discountinued to make way for future space travel.

:...( End of the best era
I really wish the footage wasn't that shaky...

SLS (Space Launch System) is still a possibility, but it is a long way off. and can still be axed
Only after Newt finishes the base. :P
Back of what? the shuttle? it's to reduce the drag plus to provide better air flow over the 747's tail.
Okay now lets send Buzz Lightyear into orbit now.

But the same ones complaining about that are those who had no problems with sending our jobs to China or India.

I wonder if the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft also transports cargo, people ,or if it's filled with solely shuttle support equipment? Anyone know? :)
wow

I PUT THAT VIDEO ON GOOGLE+ NOW ON MY CHANNEL
Thank you Boeing for transportation :)
has a 747 ever landed at Dulles before this?
and another great space vehicle has been archived :/
Besides... were you complaining when Jr signed the project in 2004?
No, Congress did not allocate the funds...
It's never gonna change. Just shut up and obey...
I think its just cover for engines.
Looks like the first person to set foot on Mars will be Chinese. R.I.P. Nasa.
im surprised they didnt sell the shuttles to the chinese like they do everything else
what the hell are you talking about??
Congress should be ashamed
Duct tape and super glue. ;)
Congratulations America, you've officially given up!
Sincerely, a very ashamed American.

The End Of America as a great Nation
Are we sending Obama to the moon?
hahahah "Frist" noob :DDD now Im First!!!!
Frist!
