Written by a Country Music Legend, Mel Tillis. It's mentioned in the song that he wont be around much longer. So l've always wondered why Ruby couldn't wait til he died to have her "fun"??? But then we wouldn't have this great story song.
The human condition. Ruby obviously is in the wrong but she had a husband who was absent for a long while and comes back heavily deformed. Probably can’t work anymore and as mentioned in song can’t satisfy her needs. Remember people ultimately are people. There is transcendent love that exists but seeing the person you love now deformed is going to be difficult. To understand think if you had a wife who got in major car accident that tore off her lower jaw and her nose. She had one eye left as well and no legs . Now you feel pain for your loved one. She constantly depends on you and it’ll forever horrify you looking at her It would be cruel to break it off but after changing her diaper forty times. Obviously you realize somethings off
That acapella "Youve painted up your lips and rolled and curled, your tinted hair." HOW ICONIC??? So many intelligent and emotional decisions in this song.
This song was written about the Korean War, but I had friends who served in Vietnam, and many of the soldiers received "dear john" letters from their girlfriends and even their wives. I didn't serve because I had a serious accident that has left me disabled for the biggest part of my life. Marriage vows are serious and shouldn't be taken lightly. I understand the hardships that were placed on both parties in a marriage when true hardships come up, but the vows say, "For better or for worse till death, you do part," and I am thankful that my wife kept those vows because, although, I didn't serve in Vietnam we have still suffered some very hard times and it would have been made much worse if she had taken the easy way out. I love your reaction as always.
I was the care giver for my wife for 18 years. She was confined to a wheelchair, and it was difficult at times. However, I honored my wedding vows and would not hesitate to do it again if I could. I know she would have done the same for me!! We were married for 43 years when she passed, but I still consider myself married to her. She once told me if she went first, she wanted me to move on, and I tried to do that, but just couldn't. She is still too much a part of me to let her go, and I know she is with me every day in spirit. She was and is the love of my life!!
i remember when this song was out, i was young and i had two brothers in Viet Nam, still very moving after all these years and they are both long gone.
The lady singing backup on the chorus really never got the credit for the hook she provided to the overall solidity of the song. Hauntingly beautiful. She also played a mean tambourine. lol
The song presents a difficult situation for both people. He says he understands that she has needs that he cannot provide because he is paralyzed. But then he also says they (the doctors) say that he won't be around much longer. (Apparently he is going to die at some point soon.) So, he wants her to at least be faithful to him a little longer. But she doesn't seem to want to.This song was written by the late Country music legend, Mel Tillis. His daughter, Pam Tillis also became a very successful country singer in the 1990s, You should react to one of her hits. A couple of her songs I suggest, Pam Tillis - "Maybe It Was Memphis" or Pam Tillis - "Shake The Sugar Tree"
TBH I prefer the studio version, it has such a nicer all round sound, and feels more impactful .......... IMHO. Another good one in the same sort of era by KR & the First Edition is 'Something's Burning'
Two other great songs by them you should listen to are Something’s Burning and What Condition my Condition Is In, which is kind of a psychedelic song. Have a great weekend guys!
I remember hearing this song as a kid and when he sings about getting the gun I got scared because my favorite aunts name was Ruby. My mother assured me she was fine. Lol
Half way through, you thought it was dark, then the last verse drops! This song was inspired, if you can call it that, from an article of an actual event where a wounded veteran killed his wife out of frustrations with her infidelity
The "right" way for Ruby to have handled this situation was to be honest and tell him she couldn't take it, break it off completely and leave. You may or may not feel less of her to do that but the fact that she stays yet continues to "diss" him by going to town "for love" is the problem. It's like she wants him to support her, but she refuses to support him.
Kenny used to take his love to town. He used to have a toll-free 1-800 phone number where women who wanted to hook up with him when he came to their town on tour could call. Usually they'd leave him a message but he was known to call them back to chat them up & make the arrangements. He was a world-class player!
Marriage means nothing to some people. Cheating is a lack of morals, bad character in a person. In SICKNESS & in health is the statement that some people don't observe. God is watching! I think, based on the reactions of you and your wife, you should really check out Marty Robbins trilogy "El Paso", "Feleena", and "El Paso City". THE BEST story telling songs ever. Even if you don't do reaction videos I suggest you two listen to these songs. You REALLY, REALLY, REALLY will love these songs. Marty Robbins is a big name in cowboy country and eventually became "outlaw" country. If you do listen to it please tell me what you think. Love you guys.
@@MerchantOfAlba Yes! Please react to Marty Robbins' "El Paso" (the studio version NOT the live performance). There are 3 songs in the series and El Paso is the first and, in my opinion, the best! Besides the wonderful story-telling lyrics, be sure to pay attention to the incredible guitar playing by Marty throughout the song. Superb! P.S. I just found you two not many days ago. I'm so glad I did! It's fun to listen to songs with you 🙃
Kenny Rogers & The First Edition were mostly made up of former members of the "New Christy Minstrels". They covered country rock, pop & psychedelic rock. They had a lot of hits in the 60's-70's such as "Something's Burning", "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", "But You Know I Love You", "Reuben James" etc. Kenny left in the mid 70's to pursue his solo career.
Sorry but I never cared for this song. If you go back to 1967 and listen to his song with the First Edition called JUST DROPPED IN you will hear the rock side of Kenny. I love that song.
Bah, it’s a great catchy tune but terrible message about wanting to kill someone that you’re supposed to love. If he really loved her, he would forgive her fulfilling her needs, especially because she keeps returning to care for him.
Check out their first hit, What Condition My Condition Was In.
great song
Just drop in. Lol👍🏻
I love the, "Is it over?" We all feel that way.
This song came out in 1969. With 543,000 troops in Vietnam that year, many could relate to this song.
The wonderful quality of Kenny Rogers' voice never changed over the years.

Rueben James is another good song he released when he was with the First Edition.
Been waiting for this one! This is the top of his story telling tree inho. That last “for gods sake turn around” is a killer line!
Banger reaction had to r watch again
That acapella "Youve painted up your lips and rolled and curled, your tinted hair."
HOW ICONIC???
So many intelligent and emotional decisions in this song.
You went back to his first band thank you. Gotta do this next. You just dropped in. it’s psychedelic side of Kenny. Thanks. Much love.
OMG such a young Kenny Rogers!! What a great reaction!
The "Asian war" in the song was Korea, but since the song was released by Kenny in '69, it was interpreted to be Vietnam.
According to Mel Tillis who wrote the song, it was about the Second World War and the battle with Japan.
I'm old lol I remember this summer show of Kenny Roger's and the First Edition. It was a great variety show.

Thank you for sharing your story. Agreed with your statement about marriage 💚😊
I saw them do this and other hit songs when I was in high school! Thanks for reacting to it!

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story. Best wishes to you and your family 💚
I admire you for that.
The female back up singer married the great singer and song writer 'Roger Miller' 'Somethings Burning' another great song by First Edition'
Song was written by mel tillis
Wow! I haven’t heard this in 40 years. The funny thing is, I was thinking of it last week
“Just checked in to see what condition my condition was in “ must watch!
Love so much all that you share with us! Beautiful honest and empathetic thoughts. I share this with 3. Thank you! 👏👍🎉❤️
Thank you for listening. Warm wishes from both of us 💚
this song gets to me since it came out
Hey Gang!❤
I like him so much and I like you all so, so much!🙏🏼💪🏼😘😍
Many thanks 👍💚
Fabulous Top 10 hit single from 1969. I bought the record as a boy❤
The killers done a wonderful version

Written by a great country singer/songwriter stuttering Mel Tillis!
Check out their psychedelic tune. "Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was In).
This is the seeds of war. If we go to war we make this song real.
In 72 I was 22 and started my new career working for a major airline. My flashback 😆
The audio is the best way to hear the meaning. Always liked Kenny Roger’s.
My first 45 I ever bought myself. I was a young guy. The live version is a bit different, so thx for showing us.
Two other great songs by them you should listen to are Something’s Burning and What Condition my Condition Is In, which is kind of a psychedelic song.
Have a great weekend guys!
Thank you 😊
I remember hearing this song as a kid and when he sings about getting the gun I got scared because my favorite aunts name was Ruby. My mother assured me she was fine. Lol
Oh my, how funny 😊
Sail Away ....would be a good one for you by kenny Rogers
Half way through, you thought it was dark, then the last verse drops! This song was inspired, if you can call it that, from an article of an actual event where a wounded veteran killed his wife out of frustrations with her infidelity
An early Kenny Rogers
Welcome to the inevitable "bad audio mix" of a live recording. Enjoyed the reaction nonetheless!

Exactly! Peace and love from Romania 💚
About a diabled vet whose wife (lover) is running around on him.
When this came out, the lady who was a lead lady where I was working, was named Ruby and she hated this song
...in sickness and in health.
Oh, Ruby...
Yes 👍

Unbelievable 😲
For God's sake, turn around. chilling.
Men were drafted into war in America until after the Vietnam War.

I think he shot her when she didn’t “turn around” this time. That’s my interpretation of the last line. Great song but how tragic.

Ruby ..at least she could have been a little discreet !!!!..Have a little mercery...
you cant make old friends dolly parton and kenny rogers
A great song although their original recording is much, much better than this live performance.

This song sums up Kenny Rogers,,, I can`t stand him !😏

Get cheated on more than once and believe me you won't keep forgiving. I know.
Also shes saying it won't be long until he's not around. That's not a good person who's also suppose to love you.
He should have bought her a sex toy.
Guess these things always have two points of view. Depending what your personal experience is. Peace and love 💚
