It is such a sad song. Too many came back from Vietnam with broken bodies and minds. Your reaction was so spot on, and compassionate. It was a big hit, and on the radio all the time back then
❤❤❤Some great Kenny Rogers songs are "Lady", "The Gambler", "Coward Of The County", "Lucille", "You Decorated My Life", "She Believes In Me" and "Through The Years".
When Kenny Rogers spun off from the New Christy Minstrels to form up The First Edition, he was able to venture into some of the genres he wanted to explore. They had many, many great songs. This was one. When I first heard this cover in the '60s, I was amazed by the cadence of rhythm. Just a wonderful song. And the best thing of all, these cats could play. Kenny Rogers was a very good bassist, and watching live performances of the First Edition is worth a search.
It's odd. the older I get , a lot of these songs that I've listened to many many times over the decades are starting to affect me differently, I've always understood what the story is about in this song (written by country music great, M-m-m-m-mel Tillis). But lately, the sadness of the man's situation in this song brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it.
Really love watching how much you enjoy this music you’re reacting to!! Thank you!! And especially love the look on your face when he said what he said!!
This was the first song I heard from Kenny Rogers and the First Edition and it remains my favourite. I love the guitars, the rhythm, his voice - I am always moved by it.
For something from Kenny and the 1st Edition with more of a rock sound, and lyrics a bit more celebratory of lust in nature, check out the song called Something's Burning.
I remember when the First Edition did a Summer replacement show on TV and in one episode their guitarist had a "play off" with BB King and it was very impressive. Talented bunch.
The drummer on this, Mickey Jones, lived down the street from my in the mid-70's. Nice guy! (He was also an actor you'd recognize in some good films from those days.)
Great reaction Shawn! Appreciate learning something on almost every video of yours that I see. No reactor that I watch takes the time to dive into a song and band like you do, and obviously I'm too lazy to look it up also. Appreciate you, brother ✌
The First Edition had 7 top 40 hits, that should had been bigger hits. But it was the late '60s. Competition was hot! They had their own TV show that lasted 2 seasons. I remember lead guitarist Terry Williams reminded me a lot of Tommy Smothers. They had some pretty heavy hitters as guests, Badfinger, Bill Withers, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Everly Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and the Pipps, John Kay (Steppenwolf), Edgar Winter....
The band IMMINENCE with one of these songs or all the songs. These are new songs that don’t have a music video to them. 🎤🎻🎸🥁 These are visualizers for the new album “The Black.” All of these songs are amazing…. 1. “Beyond the Pale” 2. “The Call of the Void” 3. “Come What May” 4. “The Black”
This was released during the Vietnam war in the 60s, but it could be about any war. The crippled-up soldier returns home, only to find his wife or girlfriend has been cheating on him and continues to do so because he is no longer able to perform his husbandly duties. Very sad song. This is more common than you might think.
He heard them talking that he won't be around much longer. 😢😢 thinking why can't she wait till he's gone. Mel Tilis was a country artist. He stuttered, but when he rang it would go away. Sometimes when doing an interview he would sing his response because of the stuttering. ❤
Kenny Rogers & The First Edition were mostly made up of former members of the "New Christy Minstrels". They covered country rock, pop & psychedelic rock. They had a lot of hits in the 60's-70's such as "Something's Burning", "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", "But You Know I Love You", "Reuben James" etc. Kenny left in the mid 70's to pursue his solo career.
Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" by Mel Tillis doesn't explicitly mention the Vietnam War in its lyrics, but some have assumed that it's about a veteran of that war due to a line about a "crazy Asian war" and the song's release date. However, Tillis has said that the song is actually about a World War II veteran.

I could see the change in your face when you realized what it's about! Very sad but great song.
Rueben James is another good one. Great reaction
Uplifting music but sad lyrics. Brought me to tears.
Yes Kenny had one heck of a singing voice!!!!
Your reviews are perceptive…but you truly nailed this one…great song, great reaction❣️
"Coward of the County" is a must! Another great reaction! 🤠
Always loved the way this story song hit! Great commentary Shawn!

I've waited for someone to react to this. Thank you.
Me too!

Mel Till is wrote this about a WWII veteran. They changed some of the words to make it current.
Oooh, this is a great one!
I've loved listening Kenny Rogers my entire 55 years now❤❤❤
spot on reaction the song hits hard lyrically.....music is fantastic too....i remember this on my moms reel to reel tape recorder i was 7 yrs old
Always the studio version first and then the best live version. You could do them back to back.

Love Love this song and group! Use to hear them on the radio constantly. Great reactions.
In the same vein, folk rock song by _John Prine_ called *Sam Stone*
Always loved this song. My own parents listened to this when I was a teenager and this song always kept with me.

Yeah he was in Tin Cup!
Another cool ones of theirs is:
“Somethings Burning, I Think It’s Love”!!
you’ll love that one too!!

I agree! He’s my fav reactor hands down! 😀
Definitely a gut-punch of a song. Imagine hearing this on the radio as a 6 year old.
Really enjoy your channel.
Check out Tell It All Brother by Kenny Rogers / First Edition

Years later when he switched to country music he did another version but I've always preferred this original one.
Me too. I even like the original by Waylon Jennings.
My dad loved this song ❤
I remember this song, but I liked their other song more--What Condition My Condition Was In. Thanks.
I would love to see your reaction to Kenny Rodgers Cowerd Of The County.
I like this song, it’s not reality, just a good song. Kenny Rogers had a great voice!👍♥️
Shawn, you should check out “Something’s Burning” by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, a song written by Mac Davis

What an incredibly sad song, I didn't realize that when the song came out. Had to listen twice
❤️
You should check out his "Coward of the County".

It was considered Country Rock.
I think you missed that he was likely in a wheelchair….legs were “bent and paralyzed”…

It’s an anti Vietnam War song.

@@jeffjones6221The First Edition did it as an anti Vietnam War song, regardless of what Mel Tillis wrote it for.
country rock pure and simple. For another good life story/lesson give johnny cash a go with :Don't take your guns to town son.:
Rueben James is also a good song.
Anyone that wants to lead us into war, should listen to this song.
Leonard Nimoy does a pretty good cover of this song.
sad, hang on!
Country, bluegrass so upbeat, but so sad.
Very 😔 sad.
