  • Ep. 92 HOW I MAKE BIG MOSAIC SUNFLOWERS and prepping two other substrates!
    I tackle a 30"x30" mosaic with three big sunflowers. Last week I started with the beaded centers here: • Ep. 91 HOW I MAKE A ST... .
    I begin by looking at my reference photo again to check the petal colors and verify where the highlights are on the first sunflower. Then I prep the glass, first by spray painting some yellow glass to reduce the transparency and brighten up the glass. Then I score, break and nip the glass into various feather cuts to create an inventory of pieces to select from. Part of the base is labeled to remind me of the highlighted areas. Using Weldbond in a Wilton Icing container from Wal-mart, the yellow glass is adhered to the GoBoard substrate. Then I continue to build up the petals with highlighted areas first.
    I take a break from the big sunflower project to prep a couple substrates by removing the twine hangers, priming with Kilz and then adding a dimensional element to the flower and drawing the Monarch design on the wings of the butterfly.
    Back to the mosaic sunflowers, I add a few glass beads to the petals with E6000. Slowly other colors are added to the petals on all sides until I get a cheer for adding the last two pieces on the first flower! (Sometimes you need an interim cheer!)
    Then I show how I fixed my butterfly in a very confusing way that only I can understand and I start on the big flower cut-out. It will be a red sunflower called Velvet Queen.
    Next, I start the second mosaic sunflower by looking at the reference photo to check tonal values. Before I begin, I sort my feather cuts and add a few colors to my palette. I even make a masking tape divider on my paper plate to keep the colors separated. The finished sunflower is covered with tracing paper so shards do not get lodged in between the pieces. The brown shadows are added and then a few gold beads, as I work on the right-hand side of the flower. Once more pieces are built up, I add more beads throughout.
    I was hoping to finish this in time for an exhibit in 10 days, but I realize my internal deadline is not realistic for this big mosaic. So I will be leisurely finishing the rest of it!

    It's really nice to see you do a mosaic with tessera again, it's been a while. I love your bead projects, but I've missed the basic mosaic art. So many new materials and ideas these days, it's nice to just relax and enjoy an almost beadless design.

    Julie, I am about to mosaic a table top with mostly glass, what would you suggest I use for the adhesive? The top used to have wood veneer on it, but it has peeled off to raw wood. I have been using Mapei Tile Adhesive in my garden window base and the back splash above my stove. Do you think that would be ok or should I try something different? I would really value your suggestion. Thank you!

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you seal that raw wood with primer or 50/50 Weldbond/water and use whatever you are most comfortable with. I like Weldbond for interior projects because it is non-toxic, readily available and easy to use. If you like the Mapei, use that!

    Wow, they are coming along wonderfully! I have not made any progress on my sunflower, ran out of beads. Question, have you ever used silicon or Lexel to attach beads? Mine is an outdoor piece. glass on glass and a lot of transparent beads and glass?

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find silicone and beads are a messy mix. I like E6000 because it shrinks down as it dries so the grouting is cleaner. It can be messy too though!
