@@nicolarollinson4381 I have ADD so it happens to me a lot. I was waiting for my mom at the neurologists when she was recovering from a stroke, and was reading a pamphlet on dementia. I could check more than enough boxes to qualify for dementia except for it had to have started recently. Nope, been like that all my life. Interestingly it doesn't affect me as much as someone who actually has dementia. It must be that growing up I learned to cope with it while someone with dementia hasn't. Could be that someone in the early stages of dementia could use some of the common ADD coping skills.

Finally, my client psychologist said, “I will admit that most people that become psychologist and psychiatrist usually go into this profession in order to diagnose their own neurosis.

Within two years you won’t remember who you are or where you live. Within 2 1/2 years you’ll think your a anteater and have major cravings for red ants. This will lead to being hospitalized on several occasions due to burrowing your face into fire ant holes. Within three years you’ll forget your an anteater and think your a diamond back rattlesnake. In roughly 6 months you’ll be arrested on several occasions due to biting several people and a couple cats. You end up only eating rodents and small lizards, you’ll be forced to eat alone due to the constant hissing sounds you make at the table forcing the other people to jump in fear of being bitten.
Carey Pettigrew I forced myself to do so. The scariest thing is when diagnosing mental exhaustion. Subtract 9 from 100. 91, I scoffed. 9 from 91... Couldn't do it. I was hospitalized for a month's rest...45 years ago.
Yes. There is very little help for people with hearing difficulties on these tests. The only reason I got answers correct was because I was reading the closed captions, otherwise I would have been lost.
A friend was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 59. I was told two of the test questions she was asked (and couldn't deal with): 1) Count backwards from 100 by 7's, and 2) draw a picture of a clock. For the latter, all she could draw was a plain circle.
@@A10TOES I have always been horrible at arithmetic - my entire life. My mother, however, loves numbers and worked in accounting/banking type jobs. She was recently tested and the neurologist was surprised that she not only counted backwards by 7's, but did it very quickly. So on that test, I'd fail miserably, my mother aced it, but she has been diagnosed currently with "mild memory loss" but, being with her regularly, her short-term memory is getting very poor. She asks the same questions repeatedly and gets distracted very easily. Apparently it's the totality of various questions/tests that aid in diagnosis.

Do you know where the studies are on the efficacy of the 3 word recall test? There are 3 little articles I've found, but not any decent studies to justify giving that test to the elderly. I know it's a standard test and I'm betting someone came up with it decades ago, and it has just been passed on down without any clear research. I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and I've been flummoxed on the actual studies for the 3 word recall test and the cube drawing test. How many people can go grocery shopping with 3 items in mind, and actually remember all three? My college freshmen cannot remember the 3 questions I ask them when they go around the room. @@robertlouis5721 For me it was because it didn't feel it was important. The guy didn't give a reason or stress that we needed to remember it. A person with dimentia might say, "What you talking about?"
Very late reply, but in case anyone is interested, being given a name and address to remember is a test for short term memory. Knowing the Queen is long term memory, so not useful for testing short term memory.
The crazy thing to me is...while watching this we do a SELF test....not understanding that we give the answer we assume is correct..in reality if it is a SELF test we would never know if our answers were incorrect! We may all have an onset...draw a clock with numbers and hands on it...of course we would think we passed! We drew what we thought was correct..so we must be good.

"Early-onset Alzheimer's is an uncommon form of dementia that strikes people younger than age 65. Of all the people who have Alzheimer's disease, about 5 percent develop symptoms before age 65. So if 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's, at least 200,000 people have the early-onset form of the disease. Mar 29, 2017"
My mother was recently diagnosed with mild dementia and she just had a blood test done to test her B12 level, homocysteine (is related to low B12) and another one I don't recall. She has hyperthyroid disease and a year ago forgot to take her daily thyroid med which is when symptoms of dementia appeared. My step-father made sure she took the med daily and her memory improved. He thought she was ok but apparently she quit taking them again. She has lost a lot of weight and is now very frail. I'm thinking the weight loss is a combo of her thyroid being extremely off again and forgetting to eat.
I do worry for my grandmother. It's hard to determine if she's having typical memory issues or if she's developing a more serious condition. She gets very upset if we suggest a screening. Do you have any advice on what to do?
On a day when conversation is going well and no one’s scheduled to be anywhere, maybe in a neutral and quiet environment, can you ask her what her fears are? Most importantly, it also has to be when you are ready and able to listen actively to really seek to understand, not reply, fix, challenge, reassure or otherwise jump in with your thoughts and emotions. Does she know people who have developed memory loss? What are her observations about how it was handled. What went well? What went poorly. What could have been done differently by the people supporting the individual who had memory loss? Speak to your own doctor about this concern for your mum. The doctor will advise you suggestions they have learned. Research this online. In meantime for you and concerned family to keep a log of concerns as examples when time comes and it has to be assessed because it impacts her normal functioning. @HopeAngel777
My brother took my mum the other day. When the Dr said what was the name and address. She said you didnt give me one 😮 I took her today for a blood test. Unfortunately the Dr didn't tell the nurse what it was for and the Dr was off. The nurse took blood anyway. Can someone please tell me what they are looking for in the blood. do you give the patients any feedback, after they answered the questions? like "well done" to reassure them, even if they made mistakes or would that make it even worse later when they get their diagnosis and they somehow remember, that you, the doctor, told them, they did well, but now you're saying they have dementia or some other kind cognitive problems?
Sorry but I have to ask if the test giver in the green suit was heavily medicated as he could barely keep his eyes open and his speech is a little slurred. I would question his ability to test anyone.
So "mental" is a medically accepted term? I know it's slang in the UK and sometimes here in the USA but I've never heard it used in a professional setting.
The dialogue is intended to mimic what someone of that age might say in fear, colloquially. It's not necessarily going to be P.C. It's the patient saying it, not the doctor, so it isn't professional. It seemed that the actress/ actor had trouble saying that word in a natural way. Obviously not part of her usual vocabulary!
What is the purpose of the blood test? What can it tell you! And, what is the purpose of the guy at the beginning of the video? He introduced the second doctor who then introduced himself - which was redundant. Was it a requirement by the place where you work or was it an ego trip by the first doctor?
Wow this test is way different than the one here in America. It's the same test Everytime. Questions like spell world backwards, draw a box, the Dr in the beginning will say 3 words example pen, comb & chair and what's your full birthday? That's the just of testing basically.
Their slowness of speech gives me a mental confidence that i can run circles around them, till i remember that i forgot what they said... while i was involved in some sort of loopy circle things. (that actually happened while i was typing that, but what good is it to lose your memory if you can't have fun with it .)

We used to home visits to elderly people especially those who lived alone, one brilliant lady over 90 used to play a game with me, she could remember the questions and answers from the year before! We never asked who the Queen was it was the Prime minister and more testing the leader of the opposition especially when Margaret Thatcher was in office she was there so long, our counting test was to count backwards from 100 in 7s, she went 100, 93, 86, 79 etc faster than I could, also we did a collection of items say 6 and take 2 away, what's missing? She told me what they had been a year ago, cheers John.

Interestingly it doesn't affect me as much as someone who actually has dementia. It must be that growing up I learned to cope with it while someone with dementia hasn't. Could be that someone in the early stages of dementia could use some of the common ADD coping skills.

Has anyone else noticed that most Psychiatrist's seem a half bubble off center?
Yes
Meeting a psychiatrist who is completely "sane" is very refreshing!
I did a job for a psychologist several years ago. After listening to a guy that had electric shock treatments and was a psychological counselor on PBS, she and I had a conversation about this guy’s role of psychological counselor.

A friend was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 59. I was told two of the test questions she was asked (and couldn't deal with): 1) Count backwards from 100 by 7's, and 2) draw a picture of a clock. For the latter, all she could draw was a plain circle.
Counting backwards by 7 is BS, many of us can't do that....geeze, I hated math!

Tell her to draw a clock with you and you do it too but don’t let her know that you’re testing her
On a day when conversation is going well and no one’s scheduled to be anywhere, maybe in a neutral and quiet environment, can you ask her what her fears are?
@HopeAngel777

do you give the patients any feedback, after they answered the questions? like "well done" to reassure them, even if they made mistakes or would that make it even worse later when they get their diagnosis and they somehow remember, that you, the doctor, told them, they did well, but now you're saying they have dementia or some other kind cognitive problems?
Is this Monty Python?

Sorry but I have to ask if the test giver in the green suit was heavily medicated as he could barely keep his eyes open and his speech is a little slurred. I would question his ability to test anyone.

Is there a test for lack of personality?
So "mental" is a medically accepted term? I know it's slang in the UK and sometimes here in the USA but I've never heard it used in a professional setting.
The dialogue is intended to mimic what someone of that age might say in fear, colloquially. It's not necessarily going to be P.C. It's the patient saying it, not the doctor, so it isn't professional. It seemed that the actress/ actor had trouble saying that word in a natural way. Obviously not part of her usual vocabulary!
Forgot the address at the last question. I am doomed!!!!
I hope you have a better caregiver than a smartass like you.
What is the purpose of the blood test? What can it tell you! And, what is the purpose of the guy at the beginning of the video? He introduced the second doctor who then introduced himself - which was redundant. Was it a requirement by the place where you work or was it an ego trip by the first doctor?
Tim Webb Thank you, Tim, for your very informative response. You gave me a whole new perspective!
Wow this test is way different than the one here in America. It's the same test Everytime. Questions like spell world backwards, draw a box, the Dr in the beginning will say 3 words example pen, comb & chair and what's your full birthday? That's the just of testing basically.
Hi Marilyn, how's your day going with you?
