I could not disagree more strongly! He was very - VERY condescending! I went through this process, for almost eleven years! I'll tell you what my takeaway's were. Alzheimer's victims are treated like children. They are confused, and the first thing that gets stolen from them by clinicians is RESPECT. If you doubt what I'm saying, just visit a senior care center, and watch how the residents are talked to. Granted, most people in these centers are not medical professionals - they are, as we (family) concluded - underpaid butt wipers. This man - this Doctor (assuming) was in a unique position to discuss onset issues, yet he chose to speak to this couple like they were 5 years old. There is an excellent book that is available - it's called "The 36 Hour Day", and it's a living-and-breathing essay (care providers, family members, victims themselves, etc.) on brain disorders. The one takeaway I had that was immeasurably valuable was to LISTEN - not talk - to the sufferers. When my mom was in the 7th stage (there is no stage 8) my choice was to ask her questions, and to let her answer them - however she was able, even if she wasn't able. She mumbled, and she whispered, and her thoughts were disconnected, but I never interrupted her. The very last time I saw my mother smile was when she was trying to answer a question I asked her about ice-skating on the river as a young girl. I remembered the stories she used to tell me. She made no coherent responses, but she thought she was doing so, and I just listened to her. Why? Because her daily routine - every single day in that facility - was "How are you doing Maggie....? It's time for breakfast...." "Time for the bathroom, Maggie... you wanna go to the bathroom?" "Time for dinner, Maggie... let's get you over to the table...." Nobody EVER just sat with her and let her respond - other than me, and other family members. When you are confused, and nobody listens to you, that has to be the most frustrating and defeating circumstances that any person can endure. You are trying - desperately - to process what is going on around you, but people are just grabbing your arms, lifting you up, and taking you wherever the schedule dictates. I"m sure this Doctor is a decent man, but he's far too young to appreciate what I'm talking about. The loss of dignity - the lost of independence - the loss of interaction - - these are GIGANTIC issues! It would- in my opinion- be FAR better to tell someone with the onset of these diseases EXACTLY what can be expected. Let them process it the way YOU are processing these words - whether you agree or disagree. Don't talk to them like children.
@@MrBudcole Nope, this doctor was explaining things excellent. *Everything* in life is subjective, just because you don't care for his delivery does not mean others won't. Everyone has a different technique, not everyone can be what you want everyone to be like.
My Mom is 92. Lived with me for the last 18 yrs. I’ve got to deal with this problem everyday, have for yrs. As a single retirement age man it’s a new adventure everyday just trying to find out what she wants/will eat. Unfortunately, almost always there’s only 1 in the family that takes care of the aged parent. I’ve got 1 sibling that don’t help at all and 1 that helps about twice a month for a few hours. But this is my Mom, she was always there for me. I promised my Dad I’d take care of her, and I will! 1 of these days, she’ll be gone. I never once felt unloved, with either parent! Still don’t! That’s the 1 thing Mom is still capable of, love!
It sounds to me like you are doing a great job.. your Mom has made it to 92 what more can be asked for.. my aunt has just died at 94 so there are really no more surprises in life... I doubt if I will live until that great age! Be grateful for every day that you have with her and I wish her the very best and you..
maria parker Thanks for the feedback. Not doing so great. There’s a huge amount of stress involved for a caretaker. Happily, my sister has become more involved, still part time, but better. I’ve had to employ someone to help. Moms mobility is extremely limited so an assisted living facility is out of the question. Trying to keep her at home. I’ve had to take off lots of time, I’m losing weight, 20 lbs, I don’t need to lose weight. My family is worried about me now. By God’s Grace I’m still healthy! My Moms mental state is rapidly degrading. We’re both in God’s hands now!
@Noneya Business my cousin's parents both had Alzheimer's and she took care of both of her parents by herself because she was the only one left. So sorry to hear about your problem. Stay strong.
Thank you, Sam and Lydia, for allowing us to be part of this difficult and vulnerable event. You are helping others to be able to get more information and not be as afraid.
your not taught this in america or most places or on tv but almost all health issues are casued by nutrition deficiencies and are easy to fix within a week. Nutrition ivs and nutrition injections supper effective in healing reversing health issues. you heal reverse dementia/altimers by myers cocktail iv and b12 injections. you get dementia/altimers because of b12 deficiencies. for example japan has the lowest rate of dementia/altimers because they health care system make sure there citizens get enough b12. You check your nutrition levels with thourough nutrition blood tests only functional medicine mds will do that and they know optimal levels not reg providers. anybody with health issues the root main cause is nutrition deficiencies. mental health issues, headache issues sleep issues balance issues the list goes on and on and its becasues of nutriton deficeinces. myers cocktail iv, vitamin d injection b12 injection, gludathione iv coq10 injections will heal and keep you at optimal health year round thats what pro althetes and rich people do year round. just type in google nutrition iv therapy near me. go get them done and start healing quick nutrition ivs and injections have been around since 1950's its a hidden secret casue there super effective and cure. anybody with altimer/dementian should do myers cocktail iv and b12 injections watch how fast they improve.

We need MAID Legalized I work in a nursing home and see this disease ravage people into nothingness ,to the point where they end up sitting in a chair, drooling, fed then changed then medicated then put to bed, the next day get up, eat, changed fed then more meds sitting and staring, over and over and over, the cycle repeats, this is cruel, families stop visiting, friends are long gone, empty shells
Alzheimer's is the cruelest of diseases. You die alone, even when your family and loved ones surround your death bed. You don't know or recognize them. They're strangers. I watched my dad die this way. I would rather die from the most painful cancerous death with my last vision being of my family at my side, than to die surrounded by strangers.
Actually, it isn't because you get to a point where you do not realize what is going on because your cognitive functions completely deteriorate. Diseases like Lou Gherrigs is FAR worse, because your body deteriorates and becomes completely immobile, but your cognitive functions stay intact the whole time!
I think she knew, she just never had definitively said that he had Alzheimer's before. Just saying the words is very emotional and signals a new stage in life.

zedlips it seems that sometimes even some of the good people get really desensitized in this field. You can experience so many horrible things in a career span that the only way they can cope is to disconnect from empathy and emotions. This guy, staged or not at least KNOWS how he SHOULD be wording this stuff and I really appreciate that. It’s the first step to actually APPLYING what you know you should do. Very tactful and informative especially to people who are analytical and want a step by step of someone’s line of thinking of how they ended up at the conclusion.
My mother died from Alzheimer's two years ago. It's a terrible decease that slowly but surely strips a person of all that makes you a person. My heart goes out to this man and his family and I whish them all the strength they need. My advise: spend as much time together and do the things he likes while you still can.......
I think this is honestly the best way that conversation could be had. He was calm and concise with both the patient and the caregiver, and laid out everything in a very clear way.

My heart breaks, as well, for this man and for his wife. And, as many other people have commented, this doctor is exceptional - so compassionate, well spoken, clear, etc.
This video appears to be at least four years old and I just wonder what Sam's condition is presently. My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and for two and half years I cared for him at home. He got so he could not stand and I could not physically lift him from his bed to his wheelchair and at that point he had to go into a hospital. He was there for 2 1/2 more years before he died in 2008. The first major flag I got that something was terribly wrong with him was when he asked me one day where we kept the cereal bowls. The cereal bowls had been kept in the exact same spot for over 20 years. Then he totally forgot how to use the microwave. One thing that gave me some comfort is that while his condition was devastating to me, it didn't seem to bother him much because he was not aware of how he was gradually losing more and more abilities and I was greatly comforted by the fact that in the five years from his diagnosis to his death, though he forgot many things, he never forgot who I was and he could always carry on a conversation with me and he maintained his sense of humor right up to the end. There is no cure for Alzheimer's but my husband was prescribed Aricept and Namenda which are thought to slow the progression somewhat. I do not know if it slowed the progression of Alzheimer's in my husband because I do not know what his condition would have been like if he had not been taking the medicine. As I watched this I thought that Lydia as Sam's caregiver is in for a long haul and I wonder how she is doing. This is a very sad disease both for the patient and the family. BTW, what a gentle and caring doctor Sam has. I was terribly impressed by the compassion he showed for both Sam and Lydia.
I am so sorry for your loss, and cannot imagine what it was like for you. I am sure you and your family did the best you could for as long as you could. It can be hard as a doctor to have to give this news, and even harder for a family to take it all in. Best wishes to you.
I dont agree. Its all bs. “Living well with Alzeimers”, “staying ahead of the curve” what a crock its a devastating illness that there is not only no cure (as he admits) but very little that treats symptoms significantly

I remember when we had a similar talk with my dad's doctor. The doctor very strongly suggested that we consider a nursing facility for dad. He has Parkinson's/ Alzheimer's and was suffering multiple falls . It was a very difficult but necessary appointment. Dad cried, we cried. The doctor shared his personal experience with his dad which let us know that he understood . That was 1 1/2 years ago. We found a very good facility for him. He is doing very well physically. We visit him constantly and he liked that. We are appreciating the time we have with him. He's got the mind of a child so he is our little boy. God has been very good to us. We will continue to cherish our time together.

Lost my great grandma / mother 15 years ago to this horrible sad disease. The journey was very heart wrenching and hard to see her go down like that. Love you Grandma!!!
I thought this was staged first but the wife crying seemed pretty real to me so I started wondering if these people consented to filming for the benefit of doctors and patients dealing with Alzheimer’s. Anyone know for sure? The fact that only first names are given for the actors of “Lydia” and “Sam” makes it seem like some sort of confidentiality that would imply it’s a legit delivery but I don’t know for sure. Either way, props to the doctor for wording that so tactfully. One of the most important qualities to have in this kind of field. You have to deliver a lot of bad news and you better know damn well how to make it the best. And not just beat around the bush. You have to be clear but word it as gently as possible without distorting the weight of the information you give.
I’d like to add, even if this video was scripted , this is the absolute correct way to treat human beings with such a diagnosis of a incurable disease. Respect and positive direction will help in a journey that can be so negative.
My dad had alzheimers. I took care of him. I cried every week because I knew when he looked into my eyes he had forgotten who his son was. The life he led. At least I know he's at peace now.
I LOVE THIS DOCTOR, HIS EMPATHY and chair side manner is stupendous. How long has it been since anyone has seen such an empathetic doctor? Its been years for me.
I honestly would rather get the news that I had a month/week to live then the fact that I had alzheimers... I wouldn't wish the experience of a loved one slowly forgetting who you are on anybody. It was the most devastating day ever when I went to visit my grandmother in the nursing home on Easter and she was crying and terrified of me because she had no idea who I was and I was just so much bigger then her physically. Tore my fucking heart out man...

My grandfather lived over 10 years with the disease, from the time the symptoms appeared. His was very slow progression. He started showing signs and symptoms in 96, got diagnosed in 97. He passed from the complications in 2010. He did very well until my grandmother passed. She kept him going, I think her and the meds he took helped slow down the progression because he always had routines that she made sure he kept up with, she made sure he took his meds, and he read her books every night to keep his brain moving. She could have easily read the books herself. But, why when her husband could too. :)

I just watched how he did the memory test and now i watch the delivery of diagnosis. I'm more emotionally invested in his story than i am in most of the tv shows.
This is among the hardest things for a doctor to do, and the worst part is that it will be just as hard for the patient and everyone else who hears it to accept. May that man live as long as possible.

Yesterday, 25th October 2023, I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Like the doctor in this video, I was told in a very sympathetic way and was allowed to ask questions. I was not rushed and I felt I was not just another statistic. I too wish all doctors giving this news was as as good as the one in the video, and the one I saw yesterday.
Yes. I am now 70. Have had cognitive memory impairment for 8 years. Just been told it is now Alzheimer's. Very lucky it did not start at a much younger age. @@michael5089
@@michael5089 Yes, I am 70 and was diagnosed with cognitive memory impairment about 8 years ago. It's only in the last 6 to 8 months that things have changed. Memory getting worse and anger and frustration setting in. I asked to be re-tested and that's when they diagnosed Alzheimer's when all the results were in. The first week was the worst, now, after doing a lot of research I have come to the understanding that I cannot change what it is, and I have to live with it. Talking to others is helping. There is still a long way to go but, with the support from others, it is helping to live with it.
This has to be the worst disease in the world. My mother died in terrible pain of cancer but she never forgot who she was or what she'd done in her life. She knew right to the end she was loved and who those people were. Your memories are who you are without them you're a shell. I think that was the most heartbreaking part of this video when his carer, I'm assuming it's his daughter, asked when would he forget who she was because that in a way is when you really lose that person. They're there but at the same time they're not. My mother in law had dementia and she completely forgot everything about herself and who her own children were she just sat in a chair drooling in a state of complete none existence and it broke everyone who knew her's heart. She was a lover of life, a happy fun loving person until the disease came and just destroyed her. There's a lot of research going on in the world about this disease and we can only hope they have a breakthrough soon. God bless these people and I agree with the other comments in this thread, the doctor is a legend, a genuinely compassionate man and good at his job.
It IS the worst disease in the world. They brains are slowly dying every day. Its 100% worse when you live with them. I live with my Mom that has dementia. Shes So mean to me now.

He covered the essential bases, and was informing the man's partner in a clear, full and appropriate way. She was probably the one who would be trying to ensure that he did what he could do, in order to have the best quality of life within an essentially hopeless situation. She was also being reassured that both she and the man would receive the best ongoing care, with reviews at regular intervals. The specialist had to pace it in a way that the woman would take in and comprehend as much of what he was saying as possible. No doubt that, in the ensuing minutes of the visit, he would discuss what specific treatment and medication would be best for the patient, and we can hope that he told them both how the carer(s) would be aided. Good practice would dictate that they would leave the surgery with printed documentation which would back up what had been discussed, and which would be helpful for others of them over the coming weeks, months and years.
My late mother, some years back, was starting to experience memory problems, and slowing of her overall cognitive function. The New York University Geriatric Unit put her through a full day, of comprehensive, extensive evaluations, tests and screenings. We had this done when mother was 91. Then we repeated the evaluations, again, when she was 92, to attempt to discover where we were on the prognosis timeline. We were told on both occasions that her 'cognitive and memory impairment was consistent with and, supportive of a diagnosis of early stage Alzheimer's" Only one problem: they were wrong. What time would show - mother, in fact had mixed senile dementia. We did not spend a great deal of energy 'accepting' their verdict, or wringing our hands...since it became obvious, (Alzheimer's having such a relentless downhill trajectory), that they were in error - TWICE. We moved mother in with my sister, and took on the tasks of caring for her at home. We fed her well, kept her socially engaged, clean, groomed, comfortable, active, with music, talk, participating in all aspects of life. We made her part of everything. Did we have the occasional tough day? You bet. But for the most part (she passed peacefully in her sleep at 95, surrounded by those who loved her, and not in some damn nursing home)...it was an experience we would not have missed for the world. We heartily encourage others to consider home caring their family member. See if it might be possible. Remember: Not all elderly people are afflicted with the types of dementias which require hospitalization. And Doctors, wise and well trained as they may be? Still do not know everything.

Your family members are Saints, taking the responsibility of your mother, who I'm sure raised you right and cared for your deeply as a child. FINALLY a respectable family doing the right act for their loving ill mother, congratulations a class act, that's what familys are suppose to do,only if they can afford the safty thats needed in a private home, having a nurse come in once or twice a week, someone responsible to WATCH OVER SOMEONE THEY LOVE...Great Effort, you had to sacrifice everyone else in your family, but your mom would of done anything for you, anything to protect, keep you safe and happy..More familys need to atleast attempt to try,but I get it, some familys are incapable, only 1 child, less money,no extra time to barely take care of themselves,no great job, just Exsisting waking up everyday broke, just trying to get ahead,.That's why nursing homes are there,if that's your only option, please visit your parents everyday even for 10 minutes, you'd be amazed at how many seniors die alone without a visit from their own familys...I used to visit my friends mother cause she was such a lovely mom,but he worked outta state,he could only visit 1 time every 2 weeks,I would go everyday to see her,and unfortunately some of the other patient would NEVER get a visitor, very sad, sad time,I always remembered allot of the patients asking me "" hello what time will I be going home today"" ohhh my that killed me...so sad.1 sort of reference was many of the patients would act like teenagers the nurses would tell me they go "back in time"when they remember a school dance or hanging out at the gym...I'd talk with many of them,it seemed common.

This is an excellent video very clear information and it was made 9 years ago! The Doctor is an excellent communicator and provides a good balance of information, empathy, realism and positivity. Very frightening disease it must be awful to be labelled but maybe a relief too if positive support to navigate is available. I’d love to know how this family is doing, they are so brave to share their story, thank you.

Just wanted to say that I was thinking of the most tactful and calm ways to say this without causing anxiety or anything and this guy did way better than how I would imagine doing this. SOOO tactful, just really satisfying to see how he worded everything to be extremely clear to the patient but not abrasive. Not beating around the bush, but just putting things out there tactfully and non abrasively.

As a nurse I did everything in my power to support love and advocate as did my sweet husband. she died at 91 ,all her money gone , My husband and me buried her and sued all the sibs for 8 years of round the clock nursing care at current rate ( my husband is a nurse also) and total other expenses not covered by insurance plus a very expensive funeral. We weren't going to scrimp on her send off!! 50% of caregivers predecease the ones they care for. God bless the care givers. I don't regret a minute I spent caring for my Mother. my hubby loves and misses her too.
everyone deserves a dr likes this man. He is amazing.
That depends. He started out good but they cut the video too short. Does he tell them to change their diet? Etc?
@@nancyfahey7518 i think he just means the way Dr. was talking to his patient and how he was interacting with them in such a hard question
If I could put everything I've stated into a single, cohesive video, it would be this one: th-cam.com/video/U8TsAh-zYFI/w-d-xo.html
But this is my Mom, she was always there for
me. I promised my Dad I’d take care of her, and I will! 1 of these days, she’ll be gone. I never once felt unloved, with either parent! Still don’t! That’s the 1 thing Mom is still capable of, love!
Noneya Business
You are a decent person, God will bless you for seeing about your Mother !
Good luck to you and your family. I can imagine its hard.
This is how I lost my dad in 07. God I miss him so much. It's a long and slow good bye. Hug your parents tell them you love them. Life is to short.
My parents were abusive id let them rot
It truly is. I’m blessed to have both of mine still but they’re in their 60’s and I know I’m going to miss them more than they’ll know.

your not taught this in america or most places or on tv but almost all health issues are casued by nutrition deficiencies and are easy to fix within a week.

I work in a nursing home and see this disease ravage people into nothingness ,to the point where they end up sitting in a chair, drooling, fed then changed then medicated then put to bed, the next day get up, eat, changed fed then more meds sitting and staring, over and over and over, the cycle repeats, this is cruel, families stop visiting, friends are long gone, empty shells
ALS is
Thankfully you are unaware of them being strangers.
@@bmbutler2 Indeed -- the doctors project it's much worse for the family as things near the end.
Actually, it isn't because you get to a point where you do not realize what is going on because your cognitive functions completely deteriorate. Diseases like Lou Gherrigs is FAR worse, because your body deteriorates and becomes completely immobile, but your cognitive functions stay intact the whole time!
You are never alone if you know God, He is with you in your situation.

zedlips it seems that sometimes even some of the good people get really desensitized in this field.

The first bits of dialogue in this video had me convinced this was an instructional video on how to tell a patient and the acting was terrible
Probably not the 1st time thru the info, but the wife's tears seem pretty real to me.

My amazing 70 year old aunt was just diagnosed with Alzheimer, words cannot describe this woman. She lives by herself raised 5 kids. We live in the same state but different counties.
*It is always heartbreaking!!! My husband was diagnosed with multifactorial Alzheimer's disease. This also triggered epileptic fits.. To be blunt, all the prescription drugs we’ve used did not yield any positive improvement. Lately I have found that Homeocure-Worldwide natural treatment along with adopting a healthy lifestyle has helped him recover completely. You may look it up for more info: **homeocureworldwide.blogspot.com*
Let’s pray there’s a cure/prevention found soon.
😞I love you mum 😔
Yesterday, 25th October 2023, I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Like the doctor in this video, I was told in a very sympathetic way and was allowed to ask questions. I was not rushed and I felt I was not just another statistic. I too wish all doctors giving this news was as as good as the one in the video, and the one I saw yesterday.
So sorry. Can I ask your age? How have you been coping?💙🫂🙏
Yes. I am now 70. Have had cognitive memory impairment for 8 years. Just been told it is now Alzheimer's. Very lucky it did not start at a much younger age.

Yes, I am 70 and was diagnosed with cognitive memory impairment about 8 years ago.

God gives me healing when I simply pray a prayer of blessings for Benny Hinn's ministry. Anyone can try praying for it too, it may help them. The website is www.BennyHinn.org
Voice Of The Martyrs and CBN's 700 Club are two ministries you can try praying for too. I love praying for and donating to these ministries cuz it heals me to do so. God bless you and your family and God loves you all so much.

Thank you for sharing. My dad has alzheimers. Initially I was quite overwhelmed. Watching videos like this one, help me a great deal. They are quite informative, and help guide me to ways I can help my dad. I am going to look for a support group for me. Thank you, again, for sharing.
The look on that women's face broke my heart.
Thank you Dr for showing kindness and answering some of my questions.
I hope this doctor is like this all the time and not pretending because he’s being filmed. I don’t think my dad had a doctor like that. This is a horrible disease and I’m terrified of dying of it more than cancer.😭😭😭

I don’t have any relatives in my family that have Alzheimer’s (thank god) but I’ll pray tonight for those that do. I like this video because it also shows techniques to do-it-yourself diagnoses for Alzheimers. Good luck, y’all are strong.
What an amazing doctor: clear, concise, eloquent, friendly. If only they produced similar here in the U.K.!

This isn’t a real patient/physician encounter, it’s a demonstration.
Wrong Daniel. It is a demonstration with a real patient.
@@k.o.5041 first of all that would be illegal, cause there is no way they would consent to this. Secondly, if you look at the description of the video, the diction clearly implies that its not real.
If this is not real then this is some top shelf acting ! The patient acts just like a bunch of older guys do & the woman reacts just like a lot of wives !

My wife was diagnosed with dementia in a video phone call on September 30, 2020. The neurologist delivered the test results as matter of factly as telling us he had a hamburger and fries for lunch. No compassion. No positioning. He did none of the discussion on treatment, next steps, connection with social worker.
My wife left the call to go out with her friend, not even remembering the diagnosis. I sat and cried like a baby. Her friend called an hour later and asked what the diagnosis was - my wife didn’t remember. That was a rough period.
This doctor is miles ahead of our experience. Kudos to him. So sorry for Sam and Lydia. It’s a long hard road.
Any disease that’s life threatening is horrible reality, but I do know that people with Alzheimer’s disease is so difficult to care for.I hope he does well.My prayers

Exercise, exercise, exercise. And clean eating.
I am in tears watching this! I know this video is 9 years old God bless them!
It took him so long to tell him, the patient already forgot what he was there for
He covered the essential bases, and was informing the man's partner in a clear, full and appropriate way.
Thats terrible but terribly funny.
You're horrible... but that was funny lol.
Where is this wonderful dr, like my husband see him. We live in Fla
How nice taking this couple step by step of the way..
Hi Angela, how's your day going with you?

My sister-in-law got early onset Alzheimer's. Her mother got it some years later. Can you imagine talking to your daughter who doesn't know who you

How did you figure out she had no Alzheimer ? Thank you.
we need doctors like that very caring and serious about the health and hes just great
I hope this kind of doctor is one I have when I’m old, he speaks so well and the way he slowly gets into stuff and says ways to help and calm the patient
It's probably because he has to talk to elderly, confused and people who are hard of hearing all day.
I'd be so anxious hearing all that prelim. Just say it to me ffs.

@wheels turn right? It's ok to say a little bit, but he went on for way too long. It would have made me start to think the news wasn't going to be so bad. And then he turns around and says it is. Smh.

Oh this Dr is awesome
Just wanted to say that I was thinking of the most tactful and calm ways to say this without causing anxiety or anything and this guy did way better than how I would imagine doing this.
SOOO tactful, just really satisfying to see how he worded everything to be extremely clear to the patient but not abrasive. Not beating around the bush, but just putting things out there tactfully and non abrasively.

Noneyabusiness (respondent below) I hear ya! I see this video is 5 yrs old and hope finds you well. I did the same thing my husband and I . 6 sibs and no help , 2 brothers thought a visit on occasional sundays was their part . she was in skilled care 8 years a broken hip was the end of life as she knew it.
