  • This old Lexus was in for a routine oil change... but it started funny afterwards and idled very low. No trouble codes set.
    Time for a quick & accurate diagnosis!
    Enjoy!

    I had a 98 camry that would not idle because of the idle control valve. Toyota said it could not be cleaned and quoted 250.00 to replace it. I pulled it out (I can't do any damage if it has to be replaced anyway) and the brass shaft had kicked a burr on the edge of the valve. Filed it smooth- no more problems. 1 week later my Chevy truck did the same thing (Chevy wanted the same price and said I could not clean it). Pulled it and cleaned out the gunk and worked fine! Thanks for the video.

    We see those quite a bit at the dealership. I always use vice grips to remove the screws. They will be on super tight and will most likely strip out if you try to remove them with a Phillips. There is a magnetic washer behind it, so be careful not to lose it. Just pull it out and spray some throttle cleaner down the hole and work the valve back and forth by hand. You'll feel it sticking. I use brake cleaner to finish it off. Might as well clean the throttle while you're there. It will idle like crap for a few minutes afterwards, but it will smooth out. You might have to show it wide open throttle for it to settle down.

    Those rotary IAC valves can be cleaned. Same valve on the Rav, really common when they stick. Quick diag is to remove the coil and spin the magnet a few times by hand this usually frees then up enough to warrant a closer look. Then it's brake clean (da dumm) and toothbrush! Nice video Ivan.

    Hello Ivan. Yes I have seen these before. I'm sure you'll get the repair when she starts stalling or an erratic idle occurs. I enjoy your electrical portions from the lab scope and non communication issues. These to me are the ones that I deal with in my area. My country in Northwest Indiana has emission related repairs. Great job on your electrical repairs. Tell Eric O. The same.

    Remove the two screws, pull off the coil, and clean the valve with solvent. I have used PB Blaster or WD-40. Just work the valve by hand until is is free. I have been successful with every attempt. I have never had to change parts.

    Ivan- my '88 Nissan Pulsar had the same type IAC. It's not a "flapper" (butterfly, vane) or a pintle. It is a "barrel" with a notch in it- that rotates in a cylinder, much like the rotor on a Wankel rotary engine. It uses a PWM bi-directional motor, to rapidly adjust airflow. Heat, gum, carbon and age blocks the travel, weakens the coil windings, and the response suffers. The only tests I know of is to apply voltage with the connector only, and try to manually rotate the barrel with a pick; it should be slightly humming when energized, and snap back to center (open) with KOEO. If I remember, 14 years ago, when I replaced it was around $100. RockAuto.com has two choice brands for this car, both at $122. Advise the Customer that "low RPM" issue is *very damaging* to the engine. Oil pressure, volume, and coolant flow are bad- and the battery will be in a constant state of discharge, taxing the alternator. A classic *cascade failure* is on it's way.

    Sticky ISC valves can cause a no start because people forget to put there foot on the accelerator pedal just a bit.
    Sure idles smooth at 500 RPM !

    I would be afraid of too low oil pressure at that low engine rpm, specially with really cold oil. if the engine idles a long time it can't be healthy. It will surely sometimes stall too.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

    Bad idle air control valve solenoid = engine die at stop light, if not die just very low idle just clean the valve. Low idle can be leak fuel pressure regulater, clogged air filter, air duct loose connection from air filter to throttle body or weak fuel pump

    Did customer do anything before the car started acting up?
    My 1997 Toyota Camry was running fine before I cleaned the AIC and after I installed it back it started running same as the Lexus.
    So I know the the AIC is clean and the throttle body is clean so I just turned up the idle speed on the throttle body.

    I have a bloody issue, 2zrfe 1.8 DOHC Low Idle after full warm up, STFT 1.6 / LTFT - 4.7, TB replaced, Battery replaced, spark plugs and coil packs replaced, fuel injectors replaced, all oem aka denso new and ECU reset and reprogrammed. I also replaced MAF and sprayed for vacuum leak with starter fluid n nothing. Even replaced evap solenoid and reset ecu by disconnecting both battery terminals n connecting only bat terminals to discharge and no success.

      Whoa easy with the parts cannon! :P How low is the idle? What year? Does it have a throttle cable? I would start with a scanner, it should show you desired idle and TPS.

    • @stevenlouis1024

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics It doesn't have a Throttle cable. It has a digital wire. No TPS just a Throttle body and all electric. MAF. Yes I used a diagnostic tool. No codes. Just that it's running - 4 on the long term fuel trim.

    I was wondering if there was an update to this. I have a Lexus ES 300 2002 model. It has been idling at around 250 to 500 RPMs for at least 10 years. I would like to have this solved as the car eventually has a low battery after idling for a long time with the air conditioner on. At no time has the car went dead or even exemplified misfire. No check engine light. I gave this car to my parents and sometimes she goes into a store and lets it sit with the air conditioner on for my dad for a really long time and I am concerned this will drain the battery in the future again. Is there a fix for the 2002 ES300? I heard that the IAC was not on the 2002 and 2003 models because of a modification. Also I saw a tsb several years ago but can no longer locate it.
    Found this on a blog. Wondering if I am searching for something other than IAC.
    I don't believe there is an idle air control valvefor cars that are fly by wire.
    starting 2002 they moved from cable throttle to an electronic one I believe so there isn't a need for an IACV any more since they can control those functions via the new throttlebody.

    So i gather a 2000rpm cold start idle is normal for a Toyota 1MZ-FE ? In cold climate initially.
    But about 30 seconds later the idle drops down to about 1100rpm whilst the engine is just starting to warm up. Then when driven back to the normal 700rpm idle +/- 50rpm and after restarting drops straight down to a normal idle.

      @ThomasFG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I always thought it was annoying/abnormal. But i suppose the cold start idle warms up, provides better oil pressure/protection, etc very rapidly compared to some cars having a 1000rpm cold start idle 😄

    • @ThomasFG
      @ThomasFG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics But hey, i run 0w40 Mobil 1 full synthetic, in Australia it isn't cheap, but definitely worth it. Doesn't burn oil, but i like the better protection when hot. It's very close to a 30 weight hot, that's why i chose it, compared to other products being almost a 50 weight 🤣
      By the book it can run 5w30, 10w30, 15w40 & 20w50 (both are too thick), so with improvements in oil tech, 5w40, etc are great alternatives. Or better still a 0w40 for even more protection on cold start !

    At 4:02 on the video, you had it on the screen, but you breezed passed it and didn't say anything about it....
    It says "Typical symptoms of poor IAC Control is cold start stalling or slow idle speed...."
    Which, sounds like your symptoms....
    Otherwise, great job as always.
    And, the customer saying no, I mean, you are young. That probably drives you nuts. I hate to say it, but, the world will beat that out of you. Who knows why people do what they do... So, save the "care" for your own stuff.... On the job, the customer is the boss, and they're gonna do what they do, so, to save your stomach lining, let it go and move on to the next one....
