    Today Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics takes a trip to help out Matt of Matt'sMotorz on TH-cam:

    Matt owns a 2000 Chrysler 300M which has been acting up:
    • I dont know what's wro...
    If we can't get to the bottom of this, it's headed for the crusher.

    3.5HO is probably the best engine Chrysler has ever made. One of the best engines period. I've not been to Part 2 yet but I'd say this one is certainly getting a long strung out diag. You would make a dealership a fortune. Getting those book hours out of ya.

    This was great! Thanks for stopping by my shop Ivan, I definitely learned a lot from your visit and had a lot of fun. It's funny, before you came I didn't know how bad the engine was because it has barely been running, just idling calmly until it gets to temp to check for stalling, and as soon as it did, I stopped. We really ran it at WAY higher RPM and way hotter than I normally would and it really highlighted how shot the engine is. I still would like to figure out exactly what is going on with the stalling because it should still run and not stall, and it definitely has gotten way worse since my long trip, even though I haven't been driving it.

    I have a 2002 300m (since new) - somebody has not taken care of this engine big time . Oil changes including trans & Brakes is about all I've had to do - I replaced the timing belt tensioner and water pump and all other belts & hoses proactively due to age. These engines will easily go 250K with normal maintenance. What model Verus are you using ? Thanks

    That engine is junk, it does not matter what you find.
    "My oil light has been coming on recently"
    Really?? Combine that with the fact that it knocks and this video should have been titled
    "chrysler 300m engine swap part 1"

    • @cojones8518
      @cojones8518 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Lustfulvengance I call the oil light, the dead motor light. By the time it comes on the motor is usually dead.

    • @lustfulvengance
      @lustfulvengance 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Random Person Because by the time you take the engine out and strip it down and send it off for machine work, its easier and much quicker to install a used engine with a warranty!
      Plus these cars are easy to swap a motor on, front core support comes off and the motor comes straight out the front with little difficulty.

    • @lustfulvengance
      @lustfulvengance 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Random Person Whats nice about these cars is that you can remove the bumper, radiator, and front core support structure and pull the engine straight out the front.
      I agree these are very nice cars and have a really nice ride to them.
      The nice part about rebuilding the engine yourself is you know its done correctly and will be essentially a new engine.
      I rather like rebuilding engines myself, I just dont at work because of the cost associated with it.

    • @lustfulvengance
      @lustfulvengance 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Random Person Here in Florida where I work labor is right around $100 usd per hour, multiply that times the 20 or so book hours for a rebuild plus parts and machine shop fees and you end up with a very expensive bill....

    Moral of the story women never look at gauges or listen to the engine , if they overheat one they will drive til it dies , if that happens scrap the car. If you cook a motor it's done , if you see the car start to run hot by looking at the gauge and you stop driving you have a good chance to save the car with a fairly easy fix. A man that has some sense will find water if it needs can limp the car to a shop or home without damaging the engine .

    Love the video. I had an intrepid with the same motor. I cleaned the throttle body one day and found a bunch or carbon deposits. I almost suspect that the iac/tb is sticking which is why it's stalling. Funny how with a vacuum leak the motor pulls fuel. I am having some drivability problems on a map car myself and I'm interested in what you find out. Let's hope the motor holds out long enough..

    The M54 on my Beemer had the exact same noise and ran like crap. Traced the problem back to a massive air leak in the pressurized oil system. Cause of the problem - forgot the replace the oil filler cap after I added some oil. Put the cap back on---problem solved!

    With the rod knock the engine is shot, plus it's a Chrysler.I had a 97 Bonneville which on a 140 mile trip one way decided to start overheating, I was half way to my destination so I continued on, a couple of hours later I started for home got on the highway and after a while the temp gauge pinned, I got off the interstate and there was a gas station, I got the radiator cap off and it was bone dry, I filled up the radiator and drove home about 70 miles it didn't overheat but I barley made into my driveway and the engine just stopped, the next day I tried to start it and nothing happened so went to a mechanic friend of mine who said to get right home and remove the spark plugs because the engine is htdrolocked, he said to crank it, I did and all the water went flying out of the cylinders, after doing some research on the 3.8 I found that the intake gaskets and the plenum had an upgrade, I replaced everything and she fired right up but smoked until all the coolant and water were blown out of the engine and exhaust, there was no damage, that 3.8 is a great engine.

    As we view this video on the Chrysler 300M and its 3.5 V6 that is not running properly, Ivan already has diagnosed the problem. He is just letting us stop and think about possible causes.
    I went to this Mopar site and investigated differences in the Chrysler 3.5 V6 high output versus standard output engine.
    www.allpar.com/mopar/V6/35.html
    Scroll to the part about the revisions in the 2nd generation 3.5 V6 engine. Direct quote from the article. "The size of the exhaust valves and the shape of the exhaust ports, manifold and catalyticconverter entrance were optimized for maximum flow exiting the engine. "
    So if MattZ got heads from a standard output engine via the salvage yard, they would not allow as much air mass to enter each cylinder as the piston moves downward on the intake stroke. Less air mass means less fuel required to keep the air - fuel mixture at stoichiometric or balanced conditions. But the engine management software is injecting fuel expecting more air mass. So the air fuel mixture is overly rich as reported by the oxygen sensors. So the engine management software has negative fuel trim of -20% as it is trying to take away sufficient fuel to get back to a balanced state.
    The vacuum leak provides more air flow / mass which seems to satisfy the engine management software. And the engine runs better.
    So if the heads were replaced with those for a standard output engine, the problem should disappear. But then there is the mechanical problem with the engine knock

  • @mph5896

    Kind of a waste to spend time diagnosing that car since the engine lower end is junk.
    I am going to guess the timing is off since the heads were replaced with used ones. That particular engine requires you to set the engine at TDC, use a special tool to lock both cams in place (in the back of the head) and then loosen both cam bolts with the timing belt on and tensioned. Then you tighten the cam bolts with the #1 piston tdc, and cams locked. Was that procedure done with the head swap?

    • @MattsMotorz
      @MattsMotorz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +m ph Yup. That was done exactly. I had the special tools and followed it to the T. The timing is fine btw.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +m ph Yeah nothing wrong with the timing in this case. Like Matt said in the intro the car ran decent for a while after the repair, but unfortunately looks like the motor was doomed even before the head swap...

    A lot of idiot's on here don't know how to take care of a good car. Overheating a car to this extreme is bad for any car . I have 390,000 miles on my 3.5 still runs great . One of the best cars I've ever had . Better the pos Honda I had that's for sure .
